  • The Matrix acts as the invisible line between action movies of old and what we know today. It introduced the world to the characters of Neo, Trinity, Morpheus, other funny names etc in addition to the concept of bullet time, Hollywood actors looking like they can really fight, virtual worlds, flying metal squids, Hugo Weaving and more. I mean a lot of those things we'd seen before but who cares The Matrix aim I right? Also we take a tour in the world of The Matrix with the video game, Path Of Neo. This is our Caravan Of Garbage review, thanks for the support! Also who's excited for the Matrix Revolutions trailer! All of us!

It could be argued that Phantom Menace actually has aged well. Instead of focusing on the annoying shitball kid, awkward terrible writing and the racist accented aliens, people are now all about the weird political allegory and random lines that imply loads of world building because they're so out there. Also for 1999 a lot of the effects still hold up, legs visible under a hovercar notwithstanding.

I think Phantom Menace still holds up really well. It still used a lot of practical effects and miniatures, and (in my humble opinion) it still has the feeling of an actual Star Wars movie, unlike most of the recent ones. There are also some interesting elements of the story and characters that I didn't notice until I actually rewatched it with adult eyes. I'd say give it another chance, you might be surprised by it.

I was in film school right after this came out (2002) and the bullet time scene is incredibly influential in film history because if was one of the key scenes that proved the concept that computers could be used in camera effects to be more than just making digital shapes and Animations. My roommate, who now works in VR, was obsessed with it and we spent a LOT of time talking about it. It was a huge deal at the time and is one of the things that led to things like image stabilization being standard, facial tracking for apps and effects, and many things we use every day. "Why couldn't they just tell Neo it was all a computer simulation?"
They could, but what good would that make? Even if he believed them, where to go from there? He would never fully appreciate the implications unless he experienced the reality of it himself.
Also, from a storytelling perspective, Neo is the audience's PoV character. It's important that things are *shown* to him, not just told, so that they're also shown to the audience - who, let's be honest, includes a fair amount of people who would have never understood the Matrix otherwise.

I remember having to explain the concept of alternate timelines and multiverses to someone just 10 or so years ago, to a person who's smart but not sci-fi savvy. But now, everything has multiverses and alternate timelines. The same was true of computer simulations when this movie was made, or even stuff like phone calls and automobiles and fire. New concepts always get picked up on by nerds and disseminated to the normies. (Prometheus was the ultimate nerd. 😆)

I remember the first time I saw The Matrix - the only thing I knew before watching it is some people around school talking about it as a 'this movie about hackers' (in hindsight they obviously had not seen it at the time). So I started watching it with that mindset - 'a cool movie about hackers'... First couple of minutes - confirmation, hackers doing hackety things. Then some scenes where obviously reality mixes with dreams, and there's probably more tech and science-fiction to it - all right. At the point where Neo was extracted from the big ol' charger and literally picked up by an oversize arcade machine claw, I had my jaw firmly on the floor with utter bewilderment - and it stayed there until the end of the movie. Best cinematic experience ever 😎

Also, when you fight smith in the final fight, you can jump when he flies through the wall and it plays an animated cutscene akin to how Neo jumps over Smith as he flies through said wall.
