Greece wildfires: Corfu begins evacuations as Rhodes fires spread

- Corfu has become the latest Greek island to order evacuations from intensifying wildfires, as the first repatriation flights touch down to rescue British holidaymakers.
Authorities in Corfu, a destination for hundreds of thousands of Britons every year to the north-west of the Greek mainland told people in the areas of Santa, Megoula, Porta, Palia, Perithia and Sinies to leave late on Sunday.
Nearly 2,500 people have been rescued from the popular island overnight amid blazes in northern areas, but no houses or hotels have been destroyed so far.
However, the fires are worsening on Rhodes ahead of 45C temperatures expected on Monday. The airline easyJet will operate two rescue flights and a third on Tuesday, carrying hundreds of Britons.
The first repatriation flights from Rhodes arrived overnight and further easyJet, Jet2 and Ryanair flights are scheduled to arrive at Gatwick, Stansted and Bristol on Monday afternoon.

Europe sends weapons to Ukraine and is unable to send a few Canadairs to Greece to put out the fires. The European Union only knows how to blow on the egg, not put it out...

Just flew out tonight (midnight local time, Monday). We had been vacationing in Ilayssos, which is located in the north-western part of Rhodes. We were lucky to have coincidentally picked that spot, because when we visited Lindos a two days ago, the roads were so busy with evacuees and emergency personnel and vehicles that we knew in an instant, that this was serious. All we saw near Lindos was not the great view over the blue Mediterranean or the Acropolis, but very determined men and women doing their hardest to contain the chaos (and did it well too).
Best of luck to all the brave firefighters, rescue workers and everyone else helping those who have lost everything. HUGE respect from these visitors from Denmark.
I can not believe some Finnish travel agencies did not want to cancel the flights to Rhodes for today. One couple got their hotel+flights for Tuesday moved on Monday, but only after a prolonged debate. Baltic travel agency still forced it's tourists to go there today omg/!

Man I am from Albania (next to Greece) and the situation is the same every goddamn summer. There can’t be summer without forests getting destroyed by the wildfire. This is why I hate this time of the season.

was meant to go to rodhes tomorow but the hotel burnt down. luckily manager to get a last minute deal to go to turkey on thursday. thoughts and prayers to all the people stuck over there

This is absolutely devastating for everyone involved and obviously animals and wild life. People complainning about not going on holiday at Greece think they need to get some perspective fgs 😢😢
I hope different countries are assisting Greece, Spain and Italy with air tankers to suppress the fires.
Only Russia can provide much help, but Greece is fighting against Russia.

Former Greek politicians have offered to bow their heads to Russia for the Be-200 aircraft, developed in the city of Taganrog, Russia, which can take on 12 tons of water in 12 seconds. but politicians in power are in no hurry to say that these planes can help Greece
they should ask their ukrainian friends, to which they gave weapons to kill Russians
Russia volunteered to help Greece three years ago with BE200. Greece doesn't need to bow their heads to anyone if they are an independent country that can buy whatever they want from whomever they want.

Sadly those with booked holidays, and wish to cancel will probably not get any refund from travel insurance as disinclantion to travel is not a good enough reason expecially if booked with EASYJET
If the government stop people going there the travel insurance should cover it

I am not sure it's that bad actually. It's just too many big fires at once, which is humanly impossible to control. Same has been in California, Australia or Canada. Even the best equipment has its limits.
