A Greek air force plane has crashed while fighting fires in Greece. Pilots Christos Moulas, 34, and Pericles Stefanidis, 27, both died.
The Greek government praised the bravery of the pilots, who died ‘while attempting to protect the lives and property of citizens’. Greece and the wider region have been ravaged by wildfires over the past week. Satellite images show how the wildfires spread on Rhodes in just three days.
A recent scientific study claimed the current simultaneous heatwaves in Europe, North America and China would be ‘virtually impossible’ without climate change.
The Greek military will observe three days of mourning over the loss of the two pilots involved in the plane crash.

Aircrft clipped the tree. External float and other debris can be seen falling away.
Damaged to right wing tip and controls caused aircrft to roll right and become unrecoverable. At least at such low altitude.
Unfortunately it's clear pilot error.
having been evacuated at the weekend can I just say thankyou to all the Greek people who helped my family escape and all the brave people who are working hard to stop the fires.

Does anyone know what happened ? Was the heat a factor? Was a mistake made ? Whatever happened these men are true heroes and deserve to be remembered as such. RIP
They were very low and hit the wing into the tree. You can see piece of the wing falling, and they lost control and crashed.
That's just sad. Good men, helping others, and they met a tragic end 😢

If you look very closely they actually clipped a tree with right wing just as they was turning (ripped off right control surface witch caused less lift vs left wing that now had more lift) so it forced the plane into a right bank turn (not likely recoverable, low-speed low altitude unfortunately )

The plane hit the tip of the tree with the wing, making the plane tilt to the right and hit the ground. They risk their life's to save people. They will be remembered as heroes.

So sad. They were trying to get the water as close as possible to the fire and it looks like they simply couldn't regain enough height afterwards. Rest in Peace brave pilots. You were simply doing your job trying to protect people and their properties.
Such a shame, these guys are heroes. Looks like he clipped the wing on the trees and took a control surface off which made the plane lose control.

Terrible? .. They were trying to protect citizens and unfortunately clipped their wing on a tree whilst doing so. Planes aren’t like cars. They don’t have wing mirrors. They’re at risk by having to swoop low. It was bad luck and there was no recovery after banking right.

If it is proven that fire was started deliberately, the arsonists should be charged with murder.

Yes, you can see part of the right wing come off just after it drops the water. Definitely hit a tree.
