  • Nearly a decade ago, Greece was bankrupt. Today, its economy is recovering.
    But after years of austerity measures, Greeks' incomes are being hit by the cost of living crisis.
    Meanwhile, wealthy nations promised $13 trillion in aid to poor countries, so why hasn’t it been paid?
    And we also speak to Iraq's deputy prime minister and oil minister.

Albania and Greece are having brain drain and in combination of the lack of heavy industry causes low economic growth. To our friends in other countries: don't be fooled. What's happening on the street is a massive cost of living raise with no corresponding wage increases (to the point that the government prefers to issue coupons for fuel/groceries/etc than regulate the deliberately unregulated market), electricity price gouging (citing the Ukrainian war as an excuse), the social safety nets are being removed, the public health system is being dismantled, and an increased rate of home foreclosures for ludicrously low debts, since a recent law allows the "servicers" to foreclose anytime they want, for whatever reason they want. For example, citing the natural gas price spikes due to the Ukraine war, the energy cartel here (equally unregulated) decided overnight to triple (I am being conservative here) the electricity prices, and the government is subsidizing the increase until the conclusion of the elections in 1 month, for obvious reasons. After that, it's everybody for himself. Of course, the electricity price did not drop with the subsequent drop in NG price. But the bankers are happy (why shouldn't they? the Greek and EU taxpayers have bailed them out repeatedly), and cost of living does not enter intro their calculations for "growth". It is like the old cartoon where a homeless person is sleeping in an alley covered with a newspaper writing "The Economy is Booming!"

    I was expecting the full picture from an international, well-established news network. Greeks can't afford their rent as those who own property are asking for obscene amounts of money (often a month's wage for a one bedroom flat) that "digital nomads" are willing to pay with their US and western European wages. Our transportation system is one of the most dangerous in Europe with a massive death toll, while our health system is depending on the professionalism of the staff, heroically working without any support. Thinking of visiting Kos like 3 million other tourists? Be careful, there's only one ambulance there, like in most touristy destinations. Don't get me started on corruption and the current state on freedom (?) of press. It's not a recovery. They transformed a European country into a southeast Asia modelled playground for the rich during the summer months via a careful povertization plan.

    How did Greece go from bankrupt to growing? Very simple, inflation boosts revenues in absolute terms, while wages remain pretty much the same. If you subtract inflation from the equation, revenues are the same while wages decrease. Which means the nation becomes "richer" through harder exploitation of the working class. I wouldn't be surprised if within 20 years from now the average Chinese worker is better paid than his Greek counterpart.

About the public sector, doctors dont want to work anymore to public hospitals for 1000-1500 euro salaries, they prefer to work in the private sector or to leave abroad in a foreign country where the salaries are 4.5, even 10 times higher. Also 80% of medical school students immediately leave the country to work abroad. They apply some relief methods for households as they used to apply in the ex communist states of Eastern Europe before the 90s using English terms to avoid the similarity (power pass - market pass, 100-200 euro discount coupons for tourism, etc.). This is the harsh reality for the Greek people today, anything else they say is a lie

      The 700-800 euros are for the unskilled. A 25-year-old with no special knowledge, what salary should he start with? Also, the fact that jobs were opened with 700-800 euros is an increase compared to before when there were none. What did you expect a government (any government) to come and solve a problem on the ground? Or did you expect all Greeks to find a job with 2000 euros per month? This will never happen anywhere.

I'm 29 not involved in politics whatsoever. I not rich I'm not a businessman I work at small business payed minimum wage which is 780 euros. It was 650 3 years ago. Sure it's not a life changing increase but an increase nevertheless. Most of my friends working in different fields of work have also seen increases on their wages. Exept money there is a feeling of stability and security compared to the last 10 years of ressesion which felt completely different. Taxation is considerably lower and international relationships are going exeptionaly well even with Turkey. I'm not saying everything is perfect, corruption, tax evation, inflation and energy cost are still huge problems and obviously there is still a long way but things are definately a lot better than it used to be.

    The economic growth in Greece is for the elite. The people are getting poorer, as it is mentioned in the video, the cost of living is rising, and there is inflation, but wages remain the same. People are losing their property because they cannot pay back loans because of austerity measures. There's wealth redistribution happening, from the people to the elite.

  • @dirt946gr
    @dirt946gr ปีที่แล้ว +2

    When did Greece go from bankruptcy to economic growth? Growth is not real. It is a result of the austerity measures being postponed + free cash flow from eu. This stops next year. In 2025 business loans given in 2020 with the states guarantee are due to be fully paid and most of the Greek businesses,as usual, will not pay them. The good thing is that business auctions proceed faster now (unless you are a New Democracy member) and with real estate markets going up the banks might need less money to be saved.
    To sum up: austerity measures will return in six moths and a new bank bailout program will be probably needed in 24-36 months.

    They’re privatizing education, housing, hospitals etc.. that’s their new answer and it’s not a good one. it may be good in the short term but privatization has killed the US. In the long run privatizing education eventually led to public colleges being expensive but could be paid off within a lifetime and private colleges as being so expensive that the debt you take on will likely be passed on to your children. The difference in the quality of education is nill but the private college dorm rooms maybe be nicer. However, private high schools are known to provide better education. Public schools can provide the same quality education as private but it’s more about the student using it to their advantage. Classrooms are larger so it’s up to the child to get the help they need and speak up. An annoying piece of the privatization of education in Greece is that multi campus colleges like online scam colleges will now move into Greece student market and function in the govts eyes as a non profit. I pray its people do a ton of research because there are millions of millennials that fell for those scams and are still paying the debts despite having a degree which amounts to a piece of paper.. these universities didn’t bother with getting credentials. Anyone recall Trump Universities? The scam colleges?
