- Wildfires on Rhodes have forced 19,000 people to be evacuated from homes and holiday accommodation.
Flights are due to land on the Greek island later on Monday to bring back stranded holidaymakers.
Tourists have been sleeping at the airport, makeshift rescue centres and on the street, after the flames threatened holiday resorts.
At least three hotels have been destroyed in the dense forest area of Kiotari on the east of the island.
Another evacuation order was issued for parts of Corfu, some 1,027km (670 miles) miles away, on Sunday evening.

One of my favorite memories is being on Corfu and how the bathroom in our hotel had a window that opened right next to the rocks. I sat on the toilet while making eye contact with a mountain goat. I laughed so hard that my boyfriend thought I was drinking before breakfast! The thought of all those animals in terror is just so devastating. May the people of Greece overcome.
I live on Rhodes but quite far from the fires. It breaks my heart that the island is burning and the locals are suffering due to that. Its devastating for tourists but nothing compared to the people losing their home
Unfortunately the government is not doing anything. The volunteers, the residents are the one risking their life to save this island, our home.
I'm praying for all people, all resident in Greek. That's all we can do for all of them. My best from Brazil. God help them.😔💚😭

I am praying for you all, it goes to show the Islands need to be continually doused in water from above during heatwave, I would hope other countries offer help to Greece by way of helicopters to use for distributing water over the fires. I'm from a part of Greece that doesn't have wildfires, but I went to Corfu on a school trip this April. It was such a beautiful island and the people there were so sweet, I really hope there are as few losses as possible. I can't even imagine what being in that situation feels like, but I wish for the best for everyone there :(

The Mediterranean has regular wildfires. In the last 30 years I have seen eight. In Spain and Italy.
Plus regularly seen temperatures of 45°C.
Rhodes is the hottest driest place in Greece.
Its Arson, nothing to do with extreme heat or warming climate.

These fires are common in Greece and have been happening every now and again for centuries
I was expecting to see people talking about climate change causing it! Like most fires around the world it's either people setting them off on purpose or by accident not how hot it is. The BBC's trying to make out that summer in foreign countries is hotter than normal but it's just normal. I'm from England and this is the coldest July I've experienced in 49 years so why isn't it getting hotter here 🤔❤️💛💚

I've been to Greece many times and it's rare not to have a forest fire, the reason they're having trouble controlling it is it started in different places at the same time the fire department said it was arson from day one, the police are questioning two men.

europe is roasting, theres wildfires in corfu yet, here, in the UK, it feels more like april or october, than july. it has been raining, every day, all month. , we can't take days out, i can't even take a walk, anywhere , in my local aria, as i am liable to get soaked while i am out. i'd love a nice, hot sunny day. dosen't have to be roasting hot. a nice, traditional, 70 farenheight, British summer day, will do, nicely!

Unfortunately it's karma by the hand of nature, not long ago Greek authorities allowed a migrant ship to capsize and nearly all the souls on board were left to drown while they watched. Now it's fire upon the Greeks.

@@Tommy-pz2yclook at a weather app for Rhodes. It’s low 30’s, pretty normal temperatures. The fires are exacerbated by lack of controlled burns to get rid of excess dead wood in the forests.
