  • Firefighters in Greece have been battling to get wildfires back under control after they rekindled on Thursday evening west of Athens. The blazes forced renewed evacuations in an area that experienced some relief after four days of fires. DW correspondent Amien Essif sent us this report from Mandra near Athens, where people are seeing their homes and livelihoods devastated.

I’m in Alberta Canada. My heart goes out to these folks…
It’s bad here as well. 25 million hectares scorched so far, homes lost, evacuations and even deaths.
And we haven’t got through July yet. 💔

I am here in Athens and the heat and the fires are terrible. I woke up the other morning with my apartment full of smoke from the fires. It’s so hot out that I only go out when necessary. And there are so many stray animals that need help. I feel for the family that lost their camp and all the people who have lost their homes or land.

When a forest fire starts picking up steam, they move like a freight train through the woods. I've seen it first hand, years ago my dad and I went for a drive in the mountains near a forest fire in southern Alberta Canada, and we were watching the helicopters come to a small lake to fill their tanks and go dump them. The fire broke over the ridge of the mountain we were at the base of, and within minutes that ENTIRE mountainside was completely engulfed in flames. My dad and I (plus the other 500 or so people who lived in that small town) were all immediately rushed out of there, even the fire brigade had to pull back. I'll never forget that sound, it genuinely sounded like rushing water, but it was the air being sucked into the wall of flames. When fires get big enough they actually change the weather patterns to feed themselves more air. They "breathe" like a lung and when it pushes out it expands SOO fast. Really scary to see first hand.

In forest fires, situation changes in a blink. At one moment you think you re ok , and then suddenly you re dead. Many people think that fire is the big problem, but its the smoke that comes out of nowhere, it chokes you, it blinds you, and your clear route of escape suddenly vanishes into nowhere.....

😢...I was evacuated from a fire 2 yrs ago in BC Canada...we almost lost the town but amazingly, it rained and slowed things down. The perimeter of the town was charred but no homes lost. Only a few days later green grass and flowers started to grow on the charred ground and around the burnt trees...Atlest the ground cover regenerated quickly and there was hope. This year new poplar saplings and dogwood bushes emerged. I have hope for this family in Greece.

Not gonna happen. The balance has been tipped to a point of no return. Whatever comes next is the new normal, there's no going back now. Even IF we stopped all carbon emissions today it would still take hundreds of years for Earth to return to normal and we all know damn well carbon emissions aren't going to stop today or anytime soon. Get used to it because this is our new reality and it's only going to get worse unfortunately. We've had over half a century to prepare and change and we failed to do so despite scientists warnings. Now it's time to face the consequences of our collective choices, come what may.

A camping ground like that is a good way to holiday, especially if you're reasonably local just looking for a week/weekend away. Unless you're cooking loads of meat daily on a barbeque, chucking litter everywhere, travelling miles in your car from morning to nightfall - it's quite a sustainable option.
The problem comes when people expect a holiday to mean nothing less than jetting halfway across the world to yet another huge, sprawling hotel complex with all the mod cons - or worse, a cruise ship.
But, from my experience of camping here in the UK and in Europe, most campers are pretty good and much more in tune with Nature.

probably a bit exaggerated, I would consider it to not be one of the really difficult mathematical concepts for average people to understand. but it certainly is a common problem that normality bias and exponential functions mix extremely badly, with people generally being inclined to wait until things get bad before they do anything. I'd say thebest recent example is the amount of trouble that could have been prevented if chinese authorities had gone straight to extreme control measures in response to early covid cases, instead of trying to deny it for 4-6 weeks. in hindsight, they could have eradicated the disease with certainly fewer than 10.000, probably fewer than 1000 cases, and ended all public restrictions by february or march 2020.

People in these climates need to be prepared to fight these fires. I saw a video on TH-cam couple of years ago where a Father and his daughter, in California I think, fought together to save their property from the approaching forest fire , the flames were literally surrounding them and small fires combusted from the heat around their property, but they refused to give up. They had ample water reserves and they used garden hoses and defeated the fires and saved their home. They were extremely brave and worked as a team, and they fought the fire right through the day and night. People need to build up water reserves by making deep ponds and have generators and pumps to attack the fire. They also have to prepare the land by cutting away anything that will feed the fire, trees, bushes, grass etc and create a good distance of a fire block away from their properties.

The people have left evacuation well too late, they simply cannot fight this as its presented in this article.

Actually quite simple because if this was done Worldwide we would see the Ocean level decrease by a few inches as well!

I have also heard someone insist before that climate change has only started being a big topic in the last 5-10 years - guys, it was the main topic that al gore ran his US presidential campaign on in 2000, it almost became america's new big project before the war on terror got in the way! it started being a somewhat publically discussed issue in the 70s and 80s, gaining some public recognition by piggybacking on the problem of and globally coordinated resolution of atmospheric ozone depletion by chlorofluorocarbon emissions. fine, maybe the average cleetus didn't hear of it before the 90s. but in this century? no, you must have been living under a rock to not take note.

One of the real problems is the embers that stays on the treetrunks and underground. If they keep on glowing they may ignite the whole area again and again. In Siberia there have been even ghost fires that lives under snow cover over winter and then ignites again. Firefigthers and volunteers should first kill the flames, but then toss over all smoldering remains, so there would be less possible places where fire starts again. One possible tool is a waterspear, a metal rod with holes that can be pushed to the ground so ground gets wet faster.
At tinderbox conditions fire can travel far and fast. And if you have mountains the temperatures and flying ambers may make situation way worse. Having wind over this heat wave and drought is making things very hard to control.
Climate change is changing mediterranean area toward desert...

Northern California resident here. From what I see, our fires are larger and far more dangerous, but we have the fantastic CalFire air fleet and massive ground forces at the state level, and each of our 58 counties has their own force as well. The Greek air force has 20 CL215/415 water bombers, but I don't see any VLATs, nor do they have any smaller twin engine type like our S-2 Trackers. This is only going to get worse, maybe it's time to retire than F-4 Phantoms and add start adding CL515s to the fleet?

For those just tuning in - the CL215/415/515 are rapid turn around flying boats that scoop water from lakes. We have some of these, but there are more planes that haul the pink Phos-chek fire retardant foam. If a place like that summer camp were threatened here they'd lay down defensive lines well before the fire arrived. The DC-10 and Boeing 747 VLATs can lay down a hundred meter barrier for 1.6km. C130s carry about a third of a VLAT sized load.

With water bombers (CL-215, CL-415), helicopters (Ericsson, SuperPuma, military helis), and Dromader (small single engine Air tractors). And it's still not enough to keep such fire under control. Especially with such strong wind bursts the last few days.
VLAT and S-2 trackers are very few in the world and only found in the USA.
Greece has already ordered many DHC-515 (together with other EU countries) couple of years ago, but the Canadian company hasn't yet began to produce them. Not even the prototype has been built yet. The Phantoms have nothing to do with firefighting.

Are you really comparing Greece with California? A better comparison would be Alabama, a very poor Alabama, that basically runs on hand-outs from other EU states.
Their landmass, especially wooded landmass is tiny, It would make a lot more sense to prepare with a few fire breaks. But being prepared is not Greece it strong points, they patiently wait until things go wrong and panic. It is exactly the same with their economy.

    • @gonebabygone4116
      @gonebabygone4116 ปีที่แล้ว

sorry, but that was stupidly bad preparation. I was surprised when they walked into that summer camp, and it was directly under the trees, within a continuous forest. greece is very well known for having some of the worst wildfire risk in europe, you simply cannot have buildings that you don't want burned down in greece among the trees connected directly to an arid forest. I'm sure they would want to preserve the big trees on the camp grounds, but they ought to have cut and permanently maintained a firebreak all around the camp. this is not the sort of thing you can fix with firefighting, it requires preparation. people need to get over their normality bias and update their preparedness for the new climate situation. "this place hasn't burned in decades, so we don't expect fire" doesn't work - that actually means greater fire risk, as more fuel will have accumulated.
