      Old fashioned cooking is becoming a lost art. My mom began teaching me to cook when I was really young. She wanted me to be able to feed a family when I got older, married and had kids...lol. Thanks for watching the video and commenting!

    Now, that's the way to make biscuits! BUT, I never saw anyone put bacon grease on top before cooking. We'll be seeing it in this house this weekend though, I can tell you that! Those biscuits look fit to eat!

      Thank you, and thanks for stopping by! I hope you enjoy the biscuits. The bacon grease gives them that little extra “something” and also helps to form a nice crust on top without being too dry.

    This is the way my Mama taught me to make biscuits and I just love it, aand she put bacon grease on top of her biscuits as well. She has been in Heave4n for a long time now and this brings back wonderful memories. Thank you so much. Wee caalled them "cat head biscuits" and they tasted wonderful!

    This looks exactly like my granny's cathead biscuits! She was born in 1906 and I sat on her bakers cabinet watching her when I was a tiny tot and often got to help with the leftover doecake. Thank you for sharing

    I grew up watching my Grandma, my mother and my aunts making biscuits this way, I have seen my mom have a little bit of bacon grease in the skillet and when she got the biscuit made, she would dip the biscuit and then turn it over so the tops would have the grease on top instead of spooning it over the top, just her way and they looked as perfect as these.

      Is it normal for it to smell like pork reigns? Does the leaf lard smell Ike that? I had taken some back fat off the loins and it’s got a strong pork reign taste

    • @wildwoodholler
      @wildwoodholler  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Christian Guther It shouldn’t have a strong taste. After the fat has been cut from the skin, then rendering and straining it, it should have a very mild taste.

    Yum! I love biscuits and gravy too. We also like breakfast for dinner. Thank you for this because I can make good biscuits, but everyone now uses cold butter, and that don't agree with my stomach. And I didn't know how much shortening to use. I know THEY say it's not healthy, but our grannies used hog lard and ate eggs and things THEY say is not healthy for years. And most lived alot longer than they do today. And I will be getting me some lard from my Amish friends!

Then I cut out biscuits with a floured tin can & bake on cookie sheet at 500 degrees. BUT I just seasoned my large Lodge skillet and want to try some in the cast iron. Thanks.

      I LOVE the old wooden bowls! I have a really nice one that I bought at a yard sale several years ago for just $10, which was a great price. The lady even told me the story of how she got it….❤️Your biscuits sound delicious! I’m sure you’ll like baking them in the iron skillet. As for the tin can, it’s nice to hear of someone else using what others would toss in the garbage. We used to chop cabbage to make kraut with two cream cans, when the ends were attached with wax. They were great for that. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

    Thank you so much! I've searched all over for a video showing how to make a biscuit like this. My mom use to make the most delicious, soft but golden brown biscuits Ive ever had in my life. Would you believe she used powdered milk?!! She mixed them just like you, and she would just pinch her off a bit. I would watch and it always squeezed out through her thumb and finger, then she would pat it a little and plop it in the pan. She always cooked long cookie sheet full. They were so good. I havent been able to find anyone that made biscuits as tender and fluffy as my mom did. It may be that she used the powdered milk...not sure? Anyway...thanks for taking me down memory lane 😊❤❤❤ By the way, yours look a lot like my moms did so i know theyre delicious!!

    • @wildwoodholler
      @wildwoodholler  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, thank you so much for such nice comments! The powdered milk could definitely have been the ingredient that made your mom’s biscuits so good. But, I just bet it was that special mother’s touch that made them so delicious. Thanks for stopping by and spending some time with me!

      Rhonda, I'm sure your mamma's bread was delicious! Nobody can cook like Mamma! Mine used to put biscuits in a pan like you're talking about, too (six in my family, including my parents). I sure do miss eating meals with her and Daddy, and the rest of the family. We used to gather there every Sunday after church to have dinner. Good times, good memories.

    Now that's some mighty fine looking biscuits. Smother fry some potatoes, pour a bunch of cane syrup with a bunch of heavy cream mixed up with syrup. Drag biscuits through syrup and every now and then drag a fork full of potatoes through syrup and cream. That be so good. Don't forget to fry up a bunch of bacon. Pork chops work good too.

    Hello. I just saw the buttermilk biscuit video on TH-cam. It was very helpful. That’s the way my granny made biscuits. It’s so nice to have a video tutorial to watch. I
    went to Facebook but could not find the “simplebackroadlife” page. I did find a “Ms Bonnie’s Country Lane” page, but so far I haven’t seen any recipes posted there. Am I looking for the printed recipes in the wrong place?

    • @wildwoodholler

      Thanks for watching and commenting on my video! I changed my TH-cam and Facebook names some time ago, and I'm sorry for the confusion. You found the right page on Facebook, "Ms. Bonnie's Country Lane." I need to get some recipes listed there in a folder so that folks can get them there, as well.

    Ingredients:
    • Large bowl of flour
    ☆(you won't use all of the flour; you just need a decent amount of flour in a large bowl)
    • 1 cup of buttermilk
    • ½ cup of shortening
    • Melted bacon fat

    • @wildwoodholler
      @wildwoodholler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right on the flour, and yes, 1 cup of buttermilk is 1/2 pint. I use 1/2 cup shortening and then put the bacon grease on the top of the biscuits before they go into the oven. You can use bacon grease in biscuits, too, or can use lard (my mom used lard when I was a little girl). After making the biscuits, sift the flour to use again.
