I'm sorry that you are having customs/post delays though, my friend lol. Greedy me...
Thank you buddy, I appreciate that, it wasn't any particular delay, just I happened to order parts from the USA, most of the popular kits are in Europe, but not what I wanted so had to wait a little, plus a few of the gaskets were out of stock and as you know, you need to get all your ducks in a row before you pull the trigger, so all good, beginning filming re-assembly this week!

Hi Del. I'm an old geezer but I've been blessed with good health. If I ever need surgery some day I hope the doctor has the same attention to detail that you have. 😁 Thanks Dr. Del and Penny for another great chapter in this series. Cheers from the U.S.
@@Moonfleet41 Definitely. Had a VFR800fi 2001 model with gear driven cams also. that bike was a joy to ride and probably the best bike ive ever had. Thou the Sporty is certanly the most characterful. Carb farts and all :p
Something stood out to me, and I was hoping you'd explain to me, so I understand why this method is important. You put assembly lube on the cams, so it stays wet and lubed during the time its sitting to prevent a dry start up but on the clutch pack you put either engine oil or primary or transmission oil on it. The clutch pack is going to be sitting just as long so wouldn't those parts dry out due to the oil running off after it's been sitting? Maybe I got distracted and missed that part if you already explained it.
Think it through mate.. start by considering that the cams, when stationary, are only touching at one tiny point...the rest being left to drain down.... the Clutch plates however... are in 100% full surface contact both sides, specially when staionary... so whould they drain down ?
Hey Dell, I am NOT a wrencher, But thanks very much for these vidz as I am really learning things about what I see on my Sporty. My 91 still had the flyweights in it so advance the timing. a tiney magnet w a fixed coil. . . those weights had to be greased every 2500 miles or one or I got stuck down in Venice, Fl and it cost me a good 250$ to get out of that mess. So yeah good maint. and knowing what has to be done and when...I got that changed out for the rotor style like I see here.
Sorry to hear that brother, it's a shame you can't maybe get together and rent a shared space with someone, almost like a club garage basis, I'm sure there are other people in our position, and I'm sure you've still got all the tools and equipment ready to go... take it easy and have a great weekend both, D&Px
I see that newer Sportsters have bronze bushings instead of needle bearings in crankcase. Harley just keeps figuring out ways to cheapen their engines.
Wonderful explanation as always Del. Very thorough and maticulous to attention to detail. Really enjoying this build very much. You are making rapid progress. As I mentioned in the comments of your last video on the clutch change/primary cover installation, you should clean the existing bolts and either rust proof them with a torch and motor oil or use a cold blue compound. I think the blackened hardware would look great against the aluminum covers and a nice match with the black frame. The money you save by not purchasing expensive (and currently unobtainable) hardware could be better used in other areas of the bike.
Yes Paul, I saw your comment this morning, no need to post it again, if you stick with the project and sit back and enjoy the entertainment, you'll see all things covered by the time the bike's done mate.
@@Moonfleet41 No problem, I'll quit nagging about reusing the old hardware. It's your project, and you know what you're doing (I don't think you've disappointed anyone yet). lol!
All is great but ... I can't get my head around about one thing: the bolts you are going to replace - why do you torque them to the spec, also applying Loctite??? Would not be sufficient as it is a temp fix, just to gently hand tight them to keep the cover on, without squashing new gasket? What is the reason behind doing it your way?
Won't be replacing them until much later once the cosmetic work begins, and Ill be building the engine up all the way to fire up and heat cycle and oil change.. thus they will need to be torqued in properly for that, and you can replace one bolt at a time without releasing the gasket pressure with no problems. !

Just loving this project Del. Its just not a good Friday without a visit to your workshop. What a great video. Also many thanks for the steer on where to get my workshop manual, its on a 8 week lead time but thats no issue👍
No worries buddy, for some reason Jersey have access to things other dealers don't, they always seem to come through for us... thanks for your kind support, have a great weekend!
Great video brother ! so much to learn ! this project is awesome. watching this with a cup of coffee eating some triscuits and enjoy life 👍 keep up the great work brother ! stay safe guys cheers from new york!!!🍷🍺
Hey Brother, good to hear from you, sounds like you're enjoying life for sure, spring coming now, time to drag the bike out and go ride..! Keep safe both of you and have a great week D&Px
Great clear and thorough video
I’ve e been watching your site for a bit. If I wanted to become a motorcycle mechanic, where/how would I start? How did you start?
What's the link for the video on placing the heads? I'm needing torch specs
I was just thinking Del about the fasteners. I don't know what the finish the new fasteners will have but if they are a high tensile steel fastener anyway then you could possibly oil treat the heads? Just a thought :)
God bless you both x
Thank you Marc, yes i could do that, it's be a long winded process, but save a fair bit of money, so lets see how the rest goes and what works best nearer the time.. have a great weekend and keep safe... D&Pxx
Loving the videos Del (and team?) great production value and delivery. Don't listen to any haters.
Thank you Danny. Much appreciated!
Superb Del, so interesting what lies beneath these covers eh?
Thanks buddy, we don't always need to know the inner working of things aye.. but it's all knowledge!
What are the arrow marks on #2 cam for ?
No TDC for front cylinde?!
I found the channel when searching how to replace fork seals. Not been disappointed since
You planning on keeping the sportster or selling it?
Hi Keith, thanks for your long term support... generally I have to sell the bikes to pay for the next project, much as I'd love to keep them all, but at this early point in the project, I haven't even given that any thought yet!
Why not fix some Se536 or Andrews N4 drop in cams?
I wish i could mate, just can't afford them!
@@Moonfleet41 i do forget
That it probably costs a decent bit to import that kinda stuff from the states
Hell yeah, picked up the piston kit today, already way into four figures and still parts to buy.!
@@Moonfleet41 jesus
I priced out a full 1275 kit
Stage 2 head work and mild cams for not much more than that
Living stateside has its perks i suppose
Is the setting the same for 2017
How do you know it's top dead center.
Superb vid and great production work, Del and Penny! I’m sorry you’re experiencing the delays in HD parts like I did earlier this year. Hang in there! Hope you’re both feeling well.
🏍👍🏍
What is that crazy gear drive screw drive
That's the ratchet driver from the Wera Zyklop kit, a fabulous little set that I carry with me on the bike as well as use in the garage!
Here you go, we did a review of the kit in this video! th-cam.com/video/gxsON5T-5O0/w-d-xo.html
@@Moonfleet41 awesome. Thanks much. That was a blast from the past. 3 garages ago, or 4?
@@richardlindsey7112 It was the one before last.. !
Excellent video Del & Penny. Great job mate, looking forward to the 1200cc conversion going on. Hope you are getting a bit more sunshine now, starting to cool down over this side of the pond. take care and have a great weekend. Cheers
Thanks so much for you constant support and kind words... and yes, finally warming up here a little, but for England that's double digits, not single ha ha... still a long way before we're riding in shirt sleeves... but enjoying what we have! Have a great weekend and keep safe! D&Px
Good stuff, are you going for a 42mm Mikuni ?
Sadly Not in the budget mate, but i will be hopefully fitting a Dynojet Thunderslide kit in the carb !
Whose parts cleaner is that?
Do you mean who's? (mine) or the make?
@@Moonfleet41 The make, please. And is it available in the states?
@@larrymagee8758 This is the one you're looking for... contact Spanner Monkey and see if they are able to ship to USA! www.spanner-monkey.co.uk/parts-cleaning-tank-bench-portable-118863?search=sm21&description=true
Del is the best..hands down
Thank you.
Followers = Lifters?
Too bad you don't have good cams, you'll be wasting a lot of money on the big bore kit without them!
Dommage qu'il n'est pas traduits en français.
Great to see things going back together so soon after the start. Shame about parts availability but seems to be the normal situation these days. I’d offer to help but shipping out to you would probably take longer than what you’re already experiencing
Thank you brother, I appreciate that, I finally got all the parts, only picked them up yesterday, so we'll begin filming the re-assembly this coming week!... Have a fabulous weekend and thank you for your constant support!
@@Moonfleet41 if you think the cost is comparable or the timing is worth it let me know. Also lots of used parts in my area.
@@myz06rocks Thanks so much for that kind offer, ive finally got everything i initially needed now, it just needed time to float over the pond.. i didn't want to order it all until id had a look inside the motor, and that meant that the usual procedure of ordering parts and getting them all in before starting a job wasn't an option this time.. Ill start filming the top end rebuild this week..
Just commented on matts page he’s a right arse gives you some shit and to be honest he’s dead jealous of your channel sounds like it he’s a right amateur totally boring he wanders away what to say next 🧐 keep up the good work love your video Del
