The achilles heel of the sportster motor is the oil pump drive gear, but it's not normally a problem with the stock low tune engines. I strongly advise against removing the cam cover with the top end assembled. As you correctly stated they are only supported by the casings. The force down though the pushrods can push the unsupported cams resulting in damage to the inner cam bearings.
Great tips as always Del and very interesting to see the teardown and cam arrangement. Cutting down the hex key is genius! Can't beat the Harley bullet proof engine. Hey brother, always good to hear from you... and yes, we'll see how many people we can convert to the 'darkside' lol Have a great week both there, keep safe and keep smiling, D&Px
Looks like beautiful engineering going on. Fascinated by the cartridge case you used to tamp out the holes for placing the cover screws so they go back into the same thread. Was it a 7.62 ? .308 maybe ? Looked like it had been fired recently too, from the centre pin mark. Will it be a 1275 ? I wonder. Harley use the same bottom end for both 883 ? as well ? Incredible strength. Getting more and more impressed with Harley Davidson here :)
Hi Tony.. it's a 7.62 x 51 Nato round, little souvenir from the past mate.. Lot's to come, just waiting for parts to arrive, and getting on with all the strip down first. Sounds like you need a Harley in your life..lol!

So Glad I found your offerings! Superb! ? looking at the cam gears,I was wondering what does the gear that spins like a merry-go-round do? Do you have another term for merry-go-round? I'm looking forward to your next posting
Arhhh!! The dart scribe makes another appearance with a another use. That is one seriously tidy engine inside. You can assume the transmission is the same. This build will be exciting to follow.
Yes Joe, have a loose plan for the generic overall style, but it's a long way off yet to get involved in styling, am leaving it loose and open so I can go with the best plan as it evolves... first and foremost though, sort the engine out!
Are going to do the chain conversion? I know that the belt doesn't required as much maintenance than a chain but the chain looks and perform much better.
Such style in your work. Quick question del, I haven’t been able to find answers. Does the cam case need to be taken off to remove the generator? I figured I’d ask before I rip my 1980 xlh apart.
That would be cool, it's a competitive market out there and there are many, many people already doing it that are far better than me... but we really appreciate the kind sentiment!

Thanks mate. Glad you enjoyed it!
Watching this made me nervous about firing up the ST soon. Haha not your fault, just a related topic. I suppose that nervous feeling probably never goes away though. Thanks as always.
It never doses Sir, and I hope it never will as it makes you check things 5 times and prevents those little disasters!
Another excellent vlog
Thank you so much 😊
I strongly advise against removing the cam cover with the top end assembled. As you correctly stated they are only supported by the casings. The force down though the pushrods can push the unsupported cams resulting in damage to the inner cam bearings.
Indeed correct, and when the cam drops out the follower drops down behind it and you're facing a very long day to fish it out!
Hi Del just caught up with your 2 latest videos - great the engine is in such good conditon 👍
It sure is mate, really pleased with this bike as a donor for the project.
Great tips as always Del and very interesting to see the teardown and cam arrangement. Cutting down the hex key is genius!
Can't beat the Harley bullet proof engine. Been out and about on the new Street Bob 114. Still running it in but even at low revs it pulls like a train in any gear!
Thanks for sharing your wisdom Del. 😊👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇸🇪🇬🇧
Hey Paul, glad to hear you're enjoying the Street Bob, and yeah, once you can let it off the lead you'll love it even more.. Thank for watching the project, early days but having fun already.
Once again an amazing vlog del .. keep the hard work going we all appreciate it
Thank you! Will do!
great work del
Ooo nice bit of engine work
Hope your well buddy looking good must be the love of a good woman 😂🤘
Sure is mate, and happy to be back in the saddle.
Congratulações
Great stuff
Every time i start to do something on my bikes i always say to myself, Right this time im gonna be super organised and going to keep things clean and tidy... Next day im cursing on the floor trying to find that damn stupic C clip or 10mm nut or that wrench some asshole must have stolen as im sure i put it back :D
Loving the Sporty series mate!
Ha ha.. why do we always blame 'sumah sole' must have stolen just before we find the 10mm socket, exactly where we left it..lol!
Great video Del & Penny. You have one excellent motor there mate, looking forward to the next one. Penny and you stay safe and have a great week. Cheers
Thanks mate👍, i think you're right, well loved and cared for internally and never abused.. cam lobes and pinion gear are like new which is a real relief and will help the budget no end. .
More followers in more ways than one eh Del.
Yes I can see what looks like an enthralling series developing. I to have my eye on another V twin the CX 500
What a great base for a project Marc, go for it and we'll follow it every step of the way!
your organization when taking everything apart is next level. really gives me a lot of inspiration since I am just beginning to learn how to wrench on my own bike without any mechanical background. any other tips for beginners like me?
Biggest tip i can ever pass on to anyone is Buy the 'proper genuine HD service manual', they will walk you through every service task step by step and give you a huge amount of confidence.
i been watching saturday sportster from lowbrow harley , 2003 sportster, he started the project a little before you, check it out quite interesting !
Great video brother! very informative! this project is getting to be very interesting 👍 thank you so much for the content ! soon ill get a harley 💪 btw I use the cardboard as a template as well when working on my bike , great tip I got from you 👍 stay safe guys cheers from new york 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍷🍷🍷
Exciting time's Del! This is going to be a fascinating build! Can't wait for the next episode. Cheers folks.
Thanks so much Shaun. More to come sir. !
Pretty neat, Del. Did you suspect something was amiss with the cams? I learned lots today from you- as per usual of course!… 🏍👍🏍
Hi Gary, no just wanted a good look at the cam lobes and the pinion drive to make sure they were still nice and fresh... happy to say they are, really impressed with this unworn engine! Have a good week and stay safe both, D&Px
@@Moonfleet41 gotcha- good news then. You both stay safe as well. 😎
So Glad I found your offerings! Superb! ? looking at the cam gears,I was wondering what does the gear that spins like a merry-go-round do?
Do you have another term for merry-go-round? I'm looking forward to your next posting
Thank you for your kinds words... the gear you're asking about is the oil pump drive, the little unit that sits underneath the casing!
Arhhh!!
The dart scribe makes another appearance with a another use.
That is one seriously tidy engine inside.
You can assume the transmission is the same.
This build will be exciting to follow.
Amazing how smoothly this engine is coming apart. Are you following shop manuals as well, or just years of experience?
Yes of experience mate, but I always have a manual to hand as well!
Nice one Del! Excited to see what you do to this bike. Have you got a plan yet for what it’ll look like?
Yes Joe, have a loose plan for the generic overall style, but it's a long way off yet to get involved in styling, am leaving it loose and open so I can go with the best plan as it evolves... first and foremost though, sort the engine out!
Are going to do the chain conversion? I know that the belt doesn't required as much maintenance than a chain but the chain looks and perform much better.
It's on the list..
Are you going to upgrade the oil pinion gear to the bronze version? Best thing for the engine while you’re at this stage.
Such style in your work. Quick question del, I haven’t been able to find answers. Does the cam case need to be taken off to remove the generator? I figured I’d ask before I rip my 1980 xlh apart.
Man you do such mad work on bikes you should open up your own bike shop del and have pennypitstop work the front.
That would be cool, it's a competitive market out there and there are many, many people already doing it that are far better than me... but we really appreciate the kind sentiment!
Why did you put the cam followers in an oil bath?
How are you
I'm well thank you.
Was that a 303 or a 308 shell that you made your hole punch from Del.
Looking lovely inside
Obvious signs of the previous owner taking great care of things.
Nick Australia
Hey Nick, no that's a 7.62 x 51 NATO round, a little souvenir from the past mate.... glad you're enjoying this!
@@Moonfleet41 thanks mate
Great hole punch
Where did you get that twisted spike tool from? Looks like a famous Indian Larry twisted downtube
I made it from square bar !
