It appears you are painting straight over dirt and grease in some of the shots, 9.16 for example?
No mate, if you watched all of the prep I did, you'll see that that starter motor and solenoid was painted black and it was all flaking off, it was all ground over with a wire mop and degreased, it's bone dry buddy, just the remnants of the what little might have been left of the black paint on the raw metal.
@@Moonfleet41 …. Ahhhh I missed this part !!
If you use a colon in your time comment like this... 9:16 then it becomes a link to that part of the video... FYI
I cannot imagine how anybody can even think that much less publicly state it. All I saw was a man meticulously go into every crevice and clean, scrape, clean and scrape some more eventually flipping a mundane, tedious task into a masterpiece! Pretty much like what this entire project has been. My response to all of this is thank you!! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and outstanding work habits which serves so many of us. Thank you, sir.
@David Hayden Well, that's what is so good about a free society, we get to say what we think. Not sure why that is so hard to imagine 5 months later but hey, its an open platform 😃
I did a similar project in the past. When was asked to repeat that for another engine, I had the engine soda blasted - it speeds the work enourmously, I can really recommend that
Really
I also soda blasted an assembled motor while in the frame! It cleans and you can rinse the soda away.
Del Boys Garage. Better than any network motorcycle show out there….Hands down!
Thank you so much kind sir.!
Amen!!
Looking at some of the other parts you've worked on, I would have sworn that this bike spent some time in The River Thames. I've made a reassessment, and now believe it to have been reclaimed from the sea.😃
you know when Del takes his hat off he means business !!
Sorry to hear about Tough times. Sending Prayers 🙏 and Keeping Penny and You Del In My Prayers Every Night.God Bless.
Thank you Paul, yes it's been a difficult couple of years for sure, but the support we have on the Channel keeps us motivated! We appreciate your kind blessings, D&Px
I would prefer my starters black but okay… LOL
Wouldn’t the engine heads heat burn paint off or discolored?? This is the first I see it being painted. Great job in masking it though 👍
This is truly an outstanding series! Thank you! I subscribed to watch this series, but now I’m looking forward to watching your back catalogue. Cheers from the USA!
Welcome aboard Eric! And thank you for such kind support... we always start and complete a project so they are all in the Playlists for you to enjoy!
Mate, I'm sorry you've had a rough time, I had no idea from watching your vids. You're always so positive and friendly, I hope things are getting better for you. Thanks for the fantastic content! I learn lots of little tricks from watching, and I really appreciate your fastidiousness. Kind Regards form Australia.
Thanks mate, yes it's been a difficult year with one thing and another and a heart attack as well, but you're right, real life goes on and we keep moving and positive, as I know only too well, life is too short... appreciate your kind words of support, all the best, Del
@@Moonfleet41 I hope you're healing from your heart attack, very scary. I had a stroke 2 years ago at 54. I was very lucky it just grazed me. All the best to you mate. Loving the 95 sporty series, I have one myself. I'm getting ideas!!
@@MrBradfordchild Sorry to hear about your scary ordeal too mate.. looks like you bounced back from it though.. Thanks again for your support and keep well aye..Del. 😄
I'm always surprised, amazed even when I read comments like, "Ohhh you missed this, you should do that, make your next project(s) this that etc. etc. As for me, I've enjoyed and learned much from watching your videos; I've been absolutely mesmerized with this 883 rebuild. It has become immediately evident what I need to do... extend my thanks, which is to happen soon via the patreon route. It's way past my bedtime but I gotta see part 2 of the engine paint. And kudos to your mate. Hola Penny. The caliber of your work is superb and certainly on a par with your partner's expertise! Thank you as well. Merry Christmas to you both!
Hi David, how wonderful to hear from you, and thank you so much for your kind words! We're really glad you enjoy the videos, each production is a full day, sometimes up to 15hrs when we include post-production and editing, so it makes it all worthwhile when it's truly appreciated. We look forward to seeing you in our 'Patron family'... it's only because of that we can afford to keep making the videos, it's that level of support that drives everything for us! Have a great Christmas holidays, keep safe and be well, all the very best, D&Px
Del your videos are appreciated by, and are valuable to many many people, Thank you
Thank you kindly Sir, it's an honour to be of use, appreciate your feedback.
You do great work sir! God bless you for your generosity!
Thank you kindly
This is a labor of love man! Beautiful work.
Best wishes from Puerto Rico.
Thank you again Raffy, am glad you approve!
You sir, are a master mechanic.
good on ya mate hope things turn out for the best, you are a gentleman.
Thank you kindly mate !
God it´s entertaining watching you take on all of these projects mate. You do it with such patience and accuracy! I´m the guy that asked about the draining of the braking system the other day, went great thanks to you and I feel like I´m slowly starting to dare take on more DIY-projects thanks to people like you. This video had me really considering if I should (really want to) take out my engine and disassemble it similarly to the way you did it and also remove the biggest covers and such with gaskets behind them before I leave it for masking and liquid paint at a professional shop. My question would be; For a bike that´s in very good condition despite being 10 years old and for only have ran 6800 km/4200 miles, would the prep work be the same in that case besides the obvious degreasing and careful wash? Love your videos!!
Thank you for your kind words of support, im glad the videos can help and inspire you to get involved. Any paint project should be subject to the same level of meticulous prep if you want the best results.. 90% of the work is in the preparation as we all know. Good luck and remember to have fun with it.
Hey Del!
I've watched your channel for years. You've come a long way! A massive well done to you and Penny. Always doing your best to put out great content. Sorry to hear it's been a rough time for you. Sending much love and support from Wimborne!🙏🏼
Thanks so much mate, much appreciated, We keep it rolling thanks to the genuine and loyal support we get from around the world.. Take care and enjoy your weekend.. D&Px

Parabéns..
Obrigado por palavras tão gentis
Superbe j’ai eu peur que vous ne le fassiez pas ,ouf 😅 😂
Great video and great outcome. I’m so grateful for all that I’ve learned from you. Quick question- what is the foam stuff you used to plug the holes?? That’s brilliant!
Thank you for your kind words... the sticky foam strip is a paint shop product designed for these purposes, but if you don't have any, or can't get some, then DIY draft excluder is a good second best!
Hey! Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. We’re thinking about repainting the engine on my girlfriends Ducati so researching techniques!
I watch this channel for all the humble hard work. The tips and tricks. The awesome photography. The unique ideas and creativity. The always interesting subject matter. But most of all for the feeling of camaraderie felt right through the camera lens. Thank you kindly, both of you.
Thank you so much mate😀, that's really kind of you, and means a lot right now. An awful lot goes into making each video, maybe between 12 to 16 hours usually, so to know that it's so well appreciated means a lot to us and makes it all worth while.
I used a VHT satin black on my 1340. But it's now peeling off already. I did everything you've done there. Are there any good brands of paint or is it I didn't do enough prep work?
I'm not sure exactly what product you used, but it is generally considered that all paint finishes rely most heavily on the appropriate prep so it could have been that.
What sort of paint are you using and does it need to get baked?looks great!
Thanks mate. Showed the paint at 8:16 perhaps you skipped it ! It'll bake off once the engine is fired up !
Pretty good video I just wish you wouldn't have painted it silver. I have a 2004 sportster. I wanna get rid of the grey Powder coat and then powder coat it black. Something about that Gray powder coat Harley does drives me insane In a bad way.😂 I finally watched the video where the bike is finished. I guess the silver looks pretty good after all.🤙
Actually, I just watched the video where the bike was finished. I guess the silver looks pretty good after all.🤙
👍
Great part 1 Del looking forward to finished job in part 2 👍
Glad you enjoyed it mate, looking forward to getting the engine back in the frame!
Looking good. Hope everything is getting better for you both. By the way I never realised how much work you must put into the editing of each video until I started doing it for my wife’s channel!! 😳Thank you for doing them so regularly.
Most welcome Giles, and welcome to the workload Sir! It is time consuming isn't it?! But as you roll along, you'll get quicker at it and be able to embrace new features to improve the end product... Good luck with it mate and remember it should be fun!
@@Moonfleet41 thank you 👍😊
What are you using for cleaning
I am currently tarting up my softail. Its so heavy as you know ,that I got it stuck in the mud a stones throw from my shed. could I shift it. Anyway, there it sat up to the top of its rims covered in a tarp all bloody winter. I had to dismantle it piece by piece outside in the cold and rain. Finally wheel barrowed it bit by bit down my field to my main workshop come shed where the full horror awaited me. its been off the road now, about two years, but I have it almost got it to the stage of reassembly. Just like yours, I have painted the frame, engine. Getting all the alloy covers and forks shiny again was a major pain literally. I'm unemployed at present, so work has stalled due to the cost of gaskets, oil etc, but I do expect it to be finished for next year (hopefully ). If it is, I'd love to pay you a visit some day and partake of your idiots collective. Because of all this waffle, I'm finding this project of yours particularly interesting. great stuff.
Wow, thanks John, firstly mate, sorry to hear you're between jobs at the minute, always makes life hard to live, specially for secondary things like bike projects... and you're so right, it's easy to forget the cost of simple things, like gaskets and oil, and they really add up! But it sounds like you're on top of it and getting what you can done... feel free to send a photo now and again so we can see your progress, we'd love to know how you get on! (email: delboysgarage@yahoo.com)... all the best mate, Del
Hi, I have one thing to say about this paint. It is a heat resistant paint, shouldn't it be baked at high temperature after application? even the instructions of many paints say so.
...And when the engine starts for the first time.. that will naturally happen won't it..!?
Looking forward to the unwrapping, I usually like a black starter but will be interesting to see it all silver.
Thanks for your channel I look forward to it 2 x weekly.
Thnaks Andy, we appropriate your kind support mate.
👍👍
Loving the content Dell .
Always enjoy the content mate, great video as always 👍👍
Thanks mate 👍
Another great job Del .. looks nice..
Thanks 👍
It's always amazing to see how much crud and filth builds up in all those really difficult to get to places.
As always mate Great job.
I hope that you guys are holding up to this heat wave.
I also hope you haven't been affected by the fires as well.
When we were in London in August 2016 there was a heat wave then as well.
All the best,
Nick Australia
Thanks Nick, thankfully the fires are nowhere near us, but has been a hot 2 days, cloudy and cooler today, looks like the British summer went through in it's usual 2 days lol
been watching for a decade my man, much love

Loyal viewer here. Just wanted to say youve helped me out alot and very much enjoy seein you save bikes from corrosion and neglect. Its a treat for me as i perform similar tasks as a profession and a hobby. Its impressive how your content shows the tedious steps that should be taken to rule out imperfection. This content is unmatched. Very reliable and trustworthy work my friend. Keep it up!!!
Thank you so much James for such amazing supportive comments... we take the trouble to do the best we can, I'm not a professional and these are hobbies shared with the internet, but if it can help one single person, then it's all worthwhile... take care and keep safe and stay in touch!
I love watching your videos mate. I have them on while I'm getting on with my own work. It's like having a mate in the workshop with me. Your attention to detail when you restore things is just awesome. Sorry to hear you've been through it over the last year. We appreciate your content mate and, being a sportster owner myself, I'm absolutely loving the sportster series. Keep your chin up and keep doing what you love.
Thank you Jonny, we both really appreciate your very kind words and support, you're right it's been a very challenging year for us both, but we're pleased to hear you're enjoying the Sportster project, plenty more to come... take care and have a safe week there, all the very best from us both.
That’s great dell just about to start doing a cbr125 thanks again keep the videos coming all the best to you and penny
Thanks, you too mate.. good luck with your project.
That is one of those things I probably wouldn't have done... Until I see the results. Yea, good call. Do it while its all apart, because you will never get back into all this again.
Sorry to hear things have been rough. Seems like the whole world is becoming more polarized and ugly. I enjoy your content and the focus it brings to the work. Thank you!
Hey Jason. Thank you for your kind words, and you are so right, i am constantly staggered at the nasty toxic behaviour of people today, and at a time when the world seems to be more wounded than ever. but we focus on the good things and good people in life, ignore the ugly behaviour, and have a little faith in human nature. Take care and keep safe Sir, and stay in touch.. D&Pxx
was a noob before when comes to motorcycle, till i watch your triumph t100 and started learning from your videos and got the hang of it. now am getting a used 883 and would love if could show a cheap OBD that you do on a sportster, what to look for, most important how to read the basic.
Crackin video as always Del! So many details you pay attention to that others wouldn't, and full of useful tips as always. You know I'm a fan for life, and I hope you and P are doing well, especially after todays weather! Keep up the awesome work mate
Thanks so much mate, 👍, you've no idea how much that means, it's a punishing schedule these days and all while trying to rest and recover at the same time, just a balancing act along with living a regular life.. Hot old day today, but plenty of fluids and breaks, and we got it done.. Thanks so much for your king and loyal support buddy.. .take care and keep safe. D&Pxx

A lot of hard work there Del, but as always a great result-- hi to Lady Penelope & all the best both x👍

Hey and thanks for the wonderful feedback on my video. Made my day! :) Oh the masking, I can only imagine the time spent. :) Great work and love the sticky rollup tape trick you used to cover up the openings in the engine, will use that in my later projects. Thanks again and keep up the great videos!! Best, Simon @ Land Rover Drive
Thank you so much Simon, you're most welcome, I wanted to just get in touch and express my gratitude for the wonderful information I was able to learn, which helped me make my tyre choice, and as you saw from the pictures, the truck looks wonderful! When it comes to doing the job right you guys rock 👍 excellent prep work no wonder your work comes out outstanding! love the process brother 👍 and of course , absolutely count with our support! you guys are one of kind and we are glad to have you sharing the knowledge 👍 your videos have helped so many people and in my case have been inspiring to keep going forward with my builds , I could have not done it with your help brother ! so its a 2 way street, we learn from you and in return we support you ! we got your back brother ! stay safe guys cheers from new york 🥂🥂🥂🍺🍺🍺🍺
Renzo, you have no idea what that means brother, thank you so much for those kind words of encouragement. Nice job Del, looks just like a bought one mate lol. Hope all is going well now for you both and please can you give back our sun lol. Have a good week and hope you are safe and away from all the fires we see you are having over . Cheers PS excellent content :)
Thanks mate, appreciate your kind words! I think you'll like it when all the masking's off and got the casings polished up... you'd be welcome to some of this sun back, give the news media something else to talk about, honestly a national emergency because it's 40c!... it gets hotter than that in many places in the world and everyone just gets on with it... strange times aye?!
Another great video I watch religiously the past few months and constantly go through all the past vids to help me do work on my 1992 vmax which you have help alot, 👍
Great to hear that Nigel, thank you so much for that kind credit and wow what a cool bike as well, a 'proper' VMax!
Great patience Del with the cleaning must have been tedious. You have done some great projects in the last year, keep it going👍
Thanks Mark.👍, it was a long and messy day cleaning it all up.. 20 years of grime and old paint.. but the new paint is secure and solid, so i must have gotten it all clean to the right level..! Can't wait to reveal it and polish up the bare casings... !
That is one huge job but a great finish 👍
I didn’t recognise you for a minute there Del, working without a baseball cap on. A load of work went into this one, well done, it’s going to look great when you’re finished. Glad to see you looking so well and best wishes to you both.
Thanks mate👍, it's always good to hear form you, and yeah, that was a load of work, but happy with the outcome.. Have a great weekend mate and keep safe.

Great video once again Del yes we love to support you both you are amazing people!
Funnily enough I was watching one of your old garage videos earlier today when you had moved into a new house and how you warmly thanked everone for their support and love.

Hi Marc, Thank you so much for your support, and yes, we are eternally grateful for all the kind support over the years, it's been a long and rough old road at times, and doesn't seem to be getting any smoother, but hey, like they say, be undeniable, keep the faith, and carry on.. I sold my old sportster this spring and got hit on my Road King the day after in the traffic and now being 3 months without a bike has left me numb. This makes me realise how dumb of a mistake it was to sell my dear old Sporty. IMO rigid mount Evo Sporty is the best bike Harley ever made!
Firstly, we're really sorry to hear about your accident, we really hope you were ok and unhurt and I completely agree with your words, sometimes less is more, and we don't realise how well off we are in the pursuit to always upgrade... best wishes and hope you can get back to where you want to be.
@@Moonfleet41 Thanks Im doing fine. 4 broken ribs and some bumps and bruises but my safety gear saved my bacon.
Road King is being reparied at the local dealer but its taking ages as getting parts for an older RK takes time. Will definitely be getting a Sporty again but in the meantime you guys keep me sane :D
@@Nifilheimur Thats not "doing fine" to me buddy, sounds like some painful injuries.. glad you're on the mend though and looking at it positively.. !

Thank you Allen so much for that wonderful support, it means to have you on our side... take care of the family and have a wonderful week, god bless, D&Px
Crazy how tough it is to get off that drive pulley nut. When I removed mine on my ultra classic I ended up cutting it off. Any how great progress on the build. One question- is that regular off the shelf high temp paint your using? Thanks
Sure thing buddy, being a left hand thread on the right of the bike, they naturally tighten themselves up over time and of course it doesn't help when they corrode in place!
Looking good, Delboy! Can't wait to see the shiny parts get shinier! It's also nice that you went with the silver instead of the black. I like the black, but it's getting to be TOO much black everywhere, on everything. This looks good! I can identify with your pain with getting that sprocket off. I just did the same, all for a neutral light switch! Harley sure didn't want that sprocket coming off! Take care, you two :)
Thank you so much for that kind approval, I wanted the engine to be a really bright and central focus of the bike, as the heart of any motorcycle is it's engine so it should take centre stage... once the masking comes off I can polish the casings which should really make it stand out.
Another great video. 👍
Your way of working has become proverbial in our house:-). "I'm doing it like Dellboy". Thanks for these educational and entertaining video's. Best wishes to you.
Thank you Eric, So nice of you my friend.
It's very gratifying to see such expert attention to detail. THAT is what is going to make this project stand out.
Thanks, Del
Thank you for those kind words, glad you enjoyed it!
We really appreciate you Del and Penny for your videos and all the tips and ideas you have put in them for us to see. It's really good to get some fresh tips and ideas. Thank you Del and Penny.

We've all done it hard, good to see your still doing your thing mate, since I started following your channel way back when I started my own Harley custom shop, 9 years on I had to shut down, covid killed alot of small businesses here in Australia. Hope you and the wife are doing well. Reinvent and overcome!
Hey mate, good to hear from you again, and we're so sorry to hear about the business... we've had a similar thing over here, Covid took away a whole way of life for many people, but like you said, quite rightly, reinvent and overcome... take care and have a great week mate, and best wishes for your future.

Thanks Russell, and yes, will do, has been very hot, rare in England, but cooling off a bit now!
Hi Del & Penny.
Life seems to throw you 'curve balls' when you least expect.
I had to stop riding about four years ago, because of an arthritic hip. Various obstacles delayed getting a replacement, but it finally happened on July 31st last year.
Now finally fit to ride again, I was made redundant two weeks ago.
Nobody wants to employ you when you are 63...
Gary, mate.. We're so sorry to hear that, after all you've been through, you didn't deserve that on top of it all.. I'm thankful i got a PSV licence back in 86' as it's kept me in paid work between real jobs, most bus and coach companies are screaming out for drivers, they'll train you through your test, and we have guys still working with us on the coach side in their mid 70's.. it may not be well paid, but it's plentiful and secure... maybe give yer local company a call..! there isn't one of them that aint short of staff, even if it's casual work, School bus work, part time or split shifts, there is no industry more flexible..! maybe it'll help.. Good luck with it buddy, chin up and stay in touch, drop us an email if you like..! D&Pxx
awesome job...whats the max temp that VHT Silver can handle.
Hi Byron, good to hear from you, the engine lacquer is stable up to 800c for exhaust manifolds. At that temperature steel is glowing red so pretty confident it'll never burn and change colour on the engine block. Take care my friend, thanks for your support.

Thanks buddy, really appreciate your kind words and really glad you're enjoying it 👍
Hey del loving the videos and all of your work
Have you ever thought about setting up a small area in your work shop specifically for painting instead of having to drop sheet everything more curious because I have the same problem🤔
That would work in general terms, but every job is different, this engine was extremely heavy and already on the lift, a very easy place to move it around and wrangle it where I need it, but other items like the brackets can be set up along a bar, so I do them on the general table... I'm sure that much like yours, a garage has to be all things for all jobs and a pile of old sheets in the corner is a great way to protect the vulnerable areas!
What a difference already. Oddly enough, I was trying to find out what paint u used for engine covers. 👍
Sure thing mate, glad it helped, oil and fuel resistant, and heat stable even for an exhaust manifold.. i figured that air cooled motors get way hotter than liquid cooled ones, specially in weather like we're having now.! so didn't want to take any chances..
@@Moonfleet41 Absolutely. Least u will not have to worry for when we get the freak spell of weather. 🌞 Look forward to seeing how it looks next. 💪
Thanks for the videos the pair of you. We see 10 minutes, but the effort that goes into filming, editing and uploading is much appreciated.
One complaint, during this video you were seen without a hat on. It was weird, unusual and somewhat alarming. Please ensure a baseball cap is worn at all times as per the past 8 years. Many thanks. 😉
Ha ha, Thank you so much Sir, you are right, every 10 minute video is a very long day, often two days, and it's great to know its appreciated. And in my defense, it was 40 degrees today, so a few minutes without head gear was very welcome..!
