Congratulations on this milestone Del. Always a relief and pride involved I’m sure. The first time I fired up a bike that I had done engine work on i literally had tears welling up in my eyes. Haha.
I know the feeling buddy, you've put so much in to it, and it only takes one tiny mistake and it can be costly and catastrophic, so it's a relief when it fires right up! Take care and have a great weekend, and thank you for your support as always.
One of the things I really love about my Triumph is that the oil filter is vertical, so there is no spillage when removing the old filter or installing a new one filled with fresh oil. That said, it's fun to watch your project progressing and I look forward to the next instalment.
Exciting progress! You might be converting me, lol. I'm normally not a big fan of the loud Harley pipe more percussive "crackle pop" sound, as I much prefer the more mellow but deep tone of say, a Japanese/Italian sporting v2 or v4, but ye gods, that loping, galloping horse idle of a Harley is just too cool for words, damn! :D

What a wonderful debate, I actually haven't had any experience of Tribodyn, but I hear nothing but good things about TRM, it's a race developed oil and exceeds in all the right places and, of course, read up on Amsoil, specially for Harleys, and I would say it's top drawer... specially in hot climates on those air cooled engines...! I'm just popping round the Library with my stage 1 running open pipes !! 😅 Shhhhhhhh!
Peace and love to you both 👍🏻☮❤
Ha ha.. wonder if they've got a book on Harley Sportster upgrades..! Have a great weekend brother, and thanks for your support as ever.. D&Pxx
Right first time, v-good job (both of you). Magical feeling eh? Putting new life into old bones - and you fixed the bike too!
(Apologies for that one will be sent by cardboard haddock) Can we have Del's BP figures 'before & after' next time? : )xx
Ha ha, you don't wanna know them mate... "lot's and less" about covers it..lol!
I bet that was a relief. Nothing nasty about those slash cuts, they sound awesome! 😀🏍💨
Thanks mate.. only nasty in that they're rusted out and damaged.. they do indeed sound handsome.!
Cant beat the nice chug of a rebuilt motor for the first time. Sounds great mate. Do you need to change the gearing now as you've got increased engine capacity?
Ni Nick, the gearing on the 883 is slightly lower in the primary side, so if anything this will pull away quicker then a factory 1200..!
Del! That sounds amazing!…you certainly know what you are doing. It must be a lovely feeling when you hear that mighty engine roar as it did after deep surgery. Well done mate, i am really impressed. Kind regards.
Thanks buddy, it's always a happy moment when a fresh engine fires up for the first heat cycle.. now i can strip it back to the bare frame and begin the creative work..!
Sounds good. She should have a bit more pep in her step now. Looking forward to watching the rest of the project.
Thanks Ron, it should indeed, and if i can cut a lot of the weight off it too then it'll make a fun ride!
A Harley that dont have oilspill...... You have done something wrong mate:0).......Great work Dell, and what a sound :)
Thanks mate👍, they've been oil tight since about 1985..! lol!
i'm looking forward to this project as your doing a pretty similar job to the one i'm doing to my softail. my bikes down to its pistons. everything's stripped awaiting paint, polishing and new parts. I don't think mine will be on the road yet as I have very limited money. I can't wait to see what your going to do to it. Nice one.
Sounds like a fun project John, good luck with it my friend, I know all too well what you mean about budget, I'd love to have done more to this engine, but just didn't have the beans in the bag! It'll still be a cool bike, same as yours, when it's all your own work it makes all the more special!
10:39 How much is supermarket 10-40 oil these days?
Great outcome brother !!!! love the first start up 😎 priceless !!! Rachel, my wife has been there for me all this time witnessing how happy I get when I get my bikes 🏍 to start up for the first time !!! great work brother ! keep up the great work ! stay safe guys cheers from new york! 🍺🍺🍺🍺
Thanks brother, it is a happy moment every time isn't it.. all that hard work coming together in one moment.. have a great weekend both of you can ride safe.. D&Pxx
Don’t you wanna pull the plugs and pump some oil into the system
With the starter before the first fire.
Not sure if you watched any of the other videos in this series, any of the engine assembly.. but everything was coated in assembly lube for the exact reason of preventing a dry start..!
@@Moonfleet41 nah I didn’t, this just came up in the recommended section.
'Beautiful Beast' she is!! Can't wait for the customizing part to begin. Appreciated Del & Pen.
Thanks Shaun, happy it fired right up and ran smooth. Have a great weekend mate and keep safe.
I expected nothing less, but hey.....nice result!! Looking forward to how the rest of this restoration goes!
Hi Allen, thank you for your kind words, and yes, really happy with the result, not it's ready to be stripped for restoration..!
Well done Del great job , you make it look so easy and experience has shown me it’s not , bike sounds lovely , and beautifully filmed as well 😎🖖
Thanks Nigel👍, thats very kind of you mate.. glad you're enjoying it.
I’ll be starting down this road soon in an 883 hugger I’d like to give some pep to.
Nice job Del just purchased a Zr7 Kawasaki 2004 in mint condition my self looking forward to playing with it
Sounds like a fun street bike mate, have fun with it. !
Why is it that the engine was smoking on the first heat cycle but not on the second? Just curious is all.
In the first heat cycle, all the external residues burn off, lubricant and sealant on bolt heads and greasy hand prints on the engine casings, by the second heat cycle they're all burnt off!
What a great outcome, Del… Sounds awesome! It’ll be great to watch you restore the balance of the bike!
Hope you both are doing well there…
👍🏍👍
Thanks Gary, good to hear from you mate, a happy day indeed, I was so pleased when it fired up and ran smooth, and even happier when on the second heat cycle it settled down to a wonderful 950 tick over, now I can strip it down to a frame and start with the creative stuff... have a great Sunday both!
@@Moonfleet41 yessir! Looking forward to it! Lots of rain and wind for a bit here, so no riding. Hope it’s better there! 😎
Excellent rebuild vids and great camera work again from both of you... I must be the devils advocate as I just don't get the Harley thing they sound like old tractors.👍
Pennie’s camera work really makes their channel stand out from all the others. Nice work again kid! :)
Lots and lots people love old tractors!
Thank you Jim, it's very kind of you recognise the work that goes in to it, it;s much aprpeciated, Penny!
@@FFL-vg9ro I agree with you. Growing up in the farm country of Upstate New York, I always thought the sound of a running tractor was a manly sound. LOL
The sound of music to my ears.
top drawer Del!! Good to see a sportster back on the agenda!!! Just a comment 9not a gripe!!!) 10 mins is just a bit too short!!! I miss the longer vids!!
Sorry Phil, i appreciate the feedback, but these current videos are really time heavy behind the scenes getting all the logistics in order, ordering and waiting for parts and materials.. but it's done and running now and we can look forward to the creative fabrication stuff that does make longer videos.. Thanks as always for your support.. !
Is that a wiha screwdriver your using when installing the air filter housing? That’s nice! I need to find me one of those.
Even with those old tatty mufflers on it sounded mint, can't beat that sound mate 👍
Too right buddy!
This must be so satisfying watching all your hard work come to life, and sounding fabulous great job mate you must be well happy.. all the best and ride safe👍
Thanks mate it was a happy moment when it fired up and ran smooth.
Sounds bloody evil with those slash cut pipes on it!
Thanks mate, she has the right voice now!
That a very healthy potato potato sound coming from that rebuilt engine Del excellent work so far really looking forward to the customisation part of this build.
Thanks Freddie, happy it fired up and ran smooth, no problems, so mission accomplished.. !
huh never seen someone filled up a filter like that. the only reason why I would own a Harley is for the sound(prefer the shovelhead sound), potato potato potato.
Great job - my husbands going to put big bore kit on mine soon. Can you tell me please what that ratchet /driver is you were screwing the air box on with as looks useful! Thanks
Great video Del & Penny, as always. Very nice job mate, she sounds sweet , looking forward to watching the project progress long. Hope you are getting some sun over there, as it's starting to get cold over this side. Penny and you have a relaxing weekend, take care. Cheers
Thanks mate👍, we have some warm sunshine now, at least by mid morning once the mist burns off, and only rain every now and again... pretty good by UK standards.. and thankfully no holiday makers to clog up the roads yet either.. best time of year for sure. Thanks for your kind support mate, we're glad you're enjoying the project.
Nice result..engine sounds spot on. Looking forward as always to the rest of your series Del. Best wishes to you and Pen.
Thanks mate. Glad you enjoyed it, have a great weekend yourself.
CONGRATS Del !! A quick fire up and it sounds healthy. Excited for the fabrication, and what comes out of your wild mind. Cheers!
Thanks Logan, that's got the nuts and bolts dealt with, like you said, sounds healthy and oil tight, not i can relax and enjoy being creative with the rest of it.
Sounds good Del .looking forward to seeing in in a few weeks 😀
Thanks buddy, really looking forward to seeing you both, it's been a long time aye !!
Great, a full success! Excellent job, fantastic camera work, just a pleasure to watch and listen to! Greetings from Zurich, Andy
Hey Andy, thank you so much for your kind words, we're glad you're enjoying the process, hope you're looking forward to a ride somewhere over the weekend! Take care and ride safe, D&Px
Iv been trying to watch the whole series… question does this bike have cams?
Nice job on the engine but I didn’t expect anything else, great series 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you very much Pete, glad you're enjoying it.
bloody well done del , you really can't beat that sound can you, I'll b running my glide in next weekend whooooooooooooo lol
Dead right, no sound like it, 950 and chuckling along happy..! Good luck with your running in, it's a momentous time mate.!
Never any doubt Del, never any doubt. Always knew it was going to be spot on. Brilliant mate well done. Looking forward to next video👍
Thanks mate 👍, the fire up was a happy moment for sure!
Hi thanks for sharing , Do you use synthetic or mineral oil ? Thanks
I'm using Rock Oil TRM fully synthetic!
@@Moonfleet41 Thanks!!
BTW--I liked that socket driver you’re using… awesome!!
Thanks buddy! 👍 handy little item.
Good morning Penny and You Del 🤗 Del When You Started Up Your Baby It Was Music To My Ears. Love The Sound. Have A Great Day and An Awesome Weekend. Always Ride Safe.
Thank you so much Paul, always a relief to crank it over for the first time and it all goes well. Thank you so much for your kind words of support as always.. take care and have an Awesome weekend too.. D&Pxx
I think I would have to go do SOME miles on it before I take it apart. Just got to use that new engine a bit.
Well done. I haven’t gone this far on a bike yet, but I will. 😀
Go for it buddy, it'll make you proud of your own work on another level.. tyres are badly cracked and perished, and it's on a SORN now too, so no rides for me on this one... but it's all the more incentive to get it done aye. !
Hey Del, do you have a video on Harley 88 oil pumps or cam repair/ replacement?
Sadly not Robert, it's not a task that has come up since we've been making YT videos, but there are a fair few out there that could help you.
Great Video top job Engine sounds sweet I look forward to the next video Del 👏👌👍
Thanks Chris👍, it's a great fun project!
Excellent choice in an oil filter!
Hi Del, I have a 2013 XL883R Roadster, How can I make it louder and sounds deeper in a cheapest way.
Easy fix Rasheed, fit a pair of Vance & Hines Short Shot slip ons on to it, you don't need to do anything else, it'll be loud and deep and am sure the sound will be exactly what you want!
@@Moonfleet41 Thanks for quick replay, are they expensive? how much they go for and where can I find it
I have to ship it to Jordan
Class 👍🏻cannot Waite for the strip down and what’s to come cheers dell
All the best mark 🇬🇧🍺👍🏻
Thanks Mark, glad you're enjoying it buddy. !
Sounding good. So far, going well. Look forward to the next videos.
Thanks buddy👍
Mad Man! I’ve been bingeing every ep., thanks!
Glad you like them!
Loud, I SAID LOUD!!!! I like it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:-)) Happy on open pipes..!
looking forward to your ideas for the project Del
Did it not need heat cycling first?
What? Did you not watch the video?
Clearly not properly
Working temperature, cooled down for two hours to 20c core temp, working temp again, then drained the oil.!
Brilliant instructional video especially for a newbie like myself who owns a 48
Thanks for watching Brian, we're glad you enjoyed it!
I don't think there is any point in straight through pipe's. You might like the sound but it does not mean every one else has to listen to it.
Idea for a future build. Would like to see you work on a Vstar bobber build.
I saw it! The smile of the happy person at 5.28 of the video. Yeah, job done- brilliantly -as usual. And I am just another fan of the channel, but nevermind the pipes. It runs as it should. Thank you guys!
Thanks again Boril, it was a happy moment after all the hard work, and very pleased with the smooth running and leak free too.! Thank you for your support as ever..
Superb, sounds really nice, well done Sir
Many thanks Andy!
@@Moonfleet41 many thanks for everything you have done to keep us posted on your journey

Thanks Mark👍
Ooooo love sound an vibration of a bone rattler 🥰🥰
Excellent work Del, sounds great.
Many thanks Ray.
Great video Del. I had a big smile when the bike started. The bike sounded great especially with other exhaust and after the idle was adjustment. Have a weekend. Cheers.
Thanks mate. Glad you enjoyed it, i was more than pleased with that outcome after all the hard work.. Have a great weekend too mate, and keep safe.
10:13 Swap you for an imitation Rolex?
Absolutely love your videos been watching since 2013🍺👍🏻
Thank you John, we really appreciate your kind long term support.
That's brilliant would you ever consider going and helping people who's been subjected to poor workmanship or bad mechanics like me
What happened to you Richard?
@@Moonfleet41 valve clearances done gaskets leaking cards clean not refitted on connectors correctly . Brakes rebuilt and rear jammed so bad disc over heated and turned purple

That oil looks rubbish after two heat cycles.
Yeah, nasty aye.!
Cool another Sporty in the line . Love my Sporty . I have had it almost 7 years now and no complaints.
Sounds awesome that mate, good move upping the cc
Thanks 👍
Well done, Del!
Always such a relief and happy grin when they fire up that 1st time!
...and it sounds just like a Harley should!
Thanks Martin, nothing like those first few beats of life, was really happy with how smooth and quiet it was! Hope you're well there, ride safe, D&Px
Well done Del sounds nice 👍 great work
Many thanks!
Is that trm oil better than amsoil Del?.... have you ever heard of tribodyn?. Is trm better than tribodyn?. Tribodyn is some pretty damn amazing stuff....
But it's all opinion in the end, the only fast rule is that new oil is better than old oil so don't neglect changing it, but I guess you knew that!
@@Moonfleet41 thank you for the reply sir. I appreciate your response to my comments. I haven't found a dealer in America for trm oil yet. I use Lucas 20/50 in my road king twin cam now cause tribodyn is around 25 dollars US., and that's a bit to much money at this time man., but I do have the tribodyn 75/140 in the Trans, it eliminates the harsh first gear clunk, and the shifts are butter smooth, but it is also 25$ a quart. If I can find trm I'm gonna try it. Take care man. Can't wait to see the harley all finished
I had the same benefit of smooth changes and the soft first engagement with thick Amsoil gear oil.
