So Gandalf was trolling them through ventriloquism, like he did Tom, Bert and Bill Huggins? That doesn't make sense. The fact is that it was Gandalf's voice, but they thought he was dead so it must be Saruman. This movie is idiotic, deceiving the audience so they won't know it's Gandalf, when they show it's Eowyn not Dernhelm from square 1.

I think they did that as a way of representing the fact that Gandalf became the new white wizard as Saruman betrayed his quest to aid in destroying Sauron. So Saruman then became the wizard of many colors (ironic right?).

Gandalf has some of the best dialogue, that's for sure! It's a huge part of what makes the movies so good.

I read that Patrick Stewart and Sean Connery both turned sow the role as Gandalf. I'm certainly glad they did. I can't anybody doing a better job than Ian McKellan.

I could see Patrick Steward as Gandalf. Granted the execution of the character would have been different than Ian's, but I'm certain that Patrick would have done a fine job and made it his own.
Mr Connery however... much as I like him. He's a bit of a ham. I don't think he would have made a good fit for the character of Gandalf.

If you read the books you'll discover that he actually has a bigger role than just saying stupid things that makes the audience laugh. Gimli is a badass, not comedic relief. He has action, not words

When I first saw this scene and Legolas says, "The White Wizard," -me thinking it's Saruman-, then the glow. That glow was so bright, so pure, and uncorrupted, I was thinking, "who-what is this? It can't be Saruman. No imposter, no bad guy could give off a light that brightly." The glow was so flawless.

At home, Mother Balrog is feeding her little baby balrog (let's call him Huey) with Gerber's Processed Orc with Carrots. She looks at the mantleclock next to their honeymoon photo at the beach and wonders out loud: "Your father is late...I hope everything went alright today.".
The struggle of being a Balrog. The dad was just trying to protect his well earned land from foes. He was even going to try to talk the invasive troupe in a reasonable way, until Gandalf started yelling at him that 'he shall not pass'. Confused, he tried to knock the wizard out, only a minor blow to nullify his rant.
But soon Gandalf started to beat his staff hard against the Balrog's bridge... his favorite bridge. Angered by this, as the bridge suddenly gave way, he managed to ring his whip around the mean wizard's leg, dragging him down with him. Mr. Balrog died with the name of his son on his lips.

Mr Balrog was only trying to protect the poor people that got attacked by those nasty orcish hooligans, he even chased the naughty goblins away, and then one of them started saying bad words (he said the A*** word!) and called Mr Balrog a Flame of Udûn! And then he started attacking him with a nasty magic staff and an Elvish sword. He even broke the bridge at the back door! The sort of people you get in dark, evil places you drove the dwarves out of these days! Did you hear that their cousin Mr Smaug got driven out of the dwarven kingdom he taken from the dwarves by a group of them? And one of those nasty, rough hobbits. And did you hear about Mr Gollum's Precious? Or Mr Saruman's staff? Oh, and has anyone told you about that nice Mr Sauron's Eye yet? Dreadful things they get up to.

As far as movie canon goes, Aragorn doesn't have Anduril yet, he doesn't get it until Elrond arrives at Dunham with the Rohirrum army before they march to Minas Tirith. In the books he already has it after leaving Rivendell. @@greyngreyer5

Me too. And so actually does Ian McKellen. He enjoyed playing Gandalf the Grey because of his character being less distant and more friendly and warm than Gandalf the White. It's the same reason why I prefer The Grey and it might me because after his death he returned to Valinor for several "lifetimes". So obviously he might have forgotten about everything he's experienced and isn't able to recall his memories clearly. Just notice how he says the line about his name as if didn't remember that until that moment. Gandalf the Grey spent a long time in Middle earth, so he got familiar with its people and assimilated a bit, just to forget his experience during his return and learn everything again.

Gandalf's enlighment caused loose of his ego and reminding of his true divine nature. He even have forgotten his name. It is amazing how Tolkien was a christian, but he knew deeply spiritual things.
And please notice how Aragorn and Gimli are reacting, they don't know in fact what happend, but Legolas as an elf has got deeper wisdom, and he looks at Gandalf with understanding.
Notice how it's not just the mixing of Ian McKellan and Christopher Lee's voices, but also their faces. At 2:14, you can slowly see Christopher Lee's facial features subtly morph into McKellan.

If I remember correctly all the wizards are only in the guise of old men to appear less powerful and intimidating to mortals, so maybe that is why he said that he is what Saruman should have been.

I love Gimli's line at the end and agree. I much prefer Gandalf the Grey over Gandalf the White. The Grey was a gentler character and, to me, just more likable. Gandalf the White seemed to actually take on a few traits of Saruman, becoming more stern and commanding, barking orders rather than asking or suggesting.
Cassimfan The role of Gandalf the Grey was as a guide and diplomat, while the role of Gandalf the White is Sarumans old role, that of a leader and commander. I think the movies do a superb job of depicting the rather large changes to the character that happen when he changes his label, which is a hard thing to portray on film. But yes, the Grey is a friendlier character.

He is Saruman as he should have been. Quite literally..."Saruman" is just the mortal persona of a spirit. White Gandalf was given a similar mortal persona to Saruman but kept his basic instincts
he barked orders because his voice was like an empowering spell, continually cast on those within earshot.
"Tree-infested forest" was what Gimli was about to say, and it is the most adorably stupid thing he would have ever said in the entire trilogy.

The Extended edition of this movie is edited so exceptionally good! By the time i had to switch discs i thought 20 minutes passed... its been 105 minutes.
Exactly! For me, The Two Towers is the fastest paced LOTR film.
I can't remember the first time I saw this scene, but I still get goosebumps when I see Gandalf reappearing. It's the most moving moment in the entire trilogy for me.
Love how they've all been separated for months and gone through so much, but just fall in like old friends again.
So what happens when you see an old friend after a couple of months? Is it all awkward? I've got friends I only see twice a year - and it's always instant comfort between us when we meet.

I love the extended version of this scene. My favorite moment was when Gandalf said "the coming of Merry and Pippin will be like the falling of small stones that starts an avalanche in the mountains." and Aragorn says "in one thing you have not changed, dear friend. You still speak in riddles." and Aragorn whispers those last few lines like he doesn't want Legolas or Gimli to hear them and that comment makes Gandalf feel good and he and Aragorn have that laugh. They've been apart since Moria, not knowing if Gandalf actually died and they're relieved to have him back.
I love how they react to Gandalf's return, first with relief, then pleasure of being together with one of the wisest being again.

For those that don't know Gandalf is actually equal to the Balrog. Balrogs were formerly Maiar(primordial spirits essentially angels) who were twisted by the words of Morgoth/Melkor and thus became Balrogs. Gandalf is also a Maiar and like Melkor and Sauron his spirit can return to Middle Earth which is how he was able to come back as a White Wizard. For reference Sauron is also a Maiar.
Maiar is plural, it’s Maia for single
He is a Maia yes but Idk if it's clear old Gandalf was. He himself wasn't even sure and in Moria the Balrog was countering all his spells. The Balrogs along with many other spirits who flocked to Melkors side got a skill upgrade from him. Even Sauron himself became terror we know him as due to Melkor. Before he was just a skilled assistant to Aule. A great craftsman but not known for changing shapes, sorcerercy, and military strategy. That all came from Melkor.
This Gandalf is different from Gandalf the Grey. He died. Gandalf the White is still thinking through things and waiting to see who he is in this world. Thankfully he appeared in an area where he would be found amongst people who knew or know him. His memory comes back a little bit, and he starts to realize his goals. Bromanship crosses over even in death, and we can see that here.

Legolas is the oldest of the trio, yet he's the first to bow to Gandalf and asking for forgiveness

This scene alone makes the last march of the ents feel even more epic than it already is.

There is a small window of people who had the genuine honour of seeing this scene and being absolutely gobsmacked by it.
If you read the books and knew what was going to happen when this film came out in 2002, good for you.
If you were born after 2002 and it has entered into common knowledge that Gandalf the Grey becomes Gandalf the White, then good for you also.
There is a little window of people like me who are old enough to have not had this knowledge smashed into my head at an early age but I also didn't read the books early enough to know what was going on ( I read them after the movies).
The trailers and posters hinted at Gandalf's return, back then. But we had no idea how epic it would be.
Imagine, if you will, that you thought Gandalf truly dead and gone. Then watch this again. You'll get a glimmer of that horrible, amazing feeling.
