- Gandalf: Ah.
Háma: I cannot allow you before Théoden King so armed, Gandalf Grayhame by order of
Grima Wormtongue.
(Gandalf nods to the others and they all start disarming themselves and handing their
weapons over to the Edoras soldiers.)
Háma: Your staff.
Gandalf: Oh, no. You would not part an old man from his walking stick?
(Háma grimaces and gives a slight nod then turns to lead them into the hall. Gandalf
winks at Aragorn.)
Grima: (Whispers to Théoden) My lord, Gandalf the Grey is coming.
(The doors close behind them.)
Grima: He’s a herald of woe.
Gandalf: The courtesy of your hall has somewhat lessened of late Théoden King.
Grima: (Whispering) He’s not welcome.
Théoden: (Haltingly) Why should I welcome you, Gandalf Stormcrow?
Grima: A just question my liege. Late is the hour in which this conjuror chooses to
appear. Lots spell I name him, ill news is an ill guest.
Gandalf: Be silent. Keep your forked tongue behind your teeth. I have not passed
through fire and death to bandy crude words with a witless worm.
Grima: His staff. I told you to take the wizards staff.
(Grima backs away. Soldiers come rushing forward. Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas fight them
off. Háma holds back Gamling from joining. Gandalf continues forward as if nothing is going
on.)
Gandalf: Théoden son of Thengel. Too long have you sat in the shadows.
(Gimli puts his foot on Grima’s chest, stopping him from getting up.)
Gimli: I would stay still if I were you.
Gandalf: Harken to me. (Théoden grimaces and lets out a slight growl. Gandalf
raises his hand) I release you from this spell.
Théoden: Hahahahaahaha. Hahahahahahah. You have no power here Gandalf the Grey.
(Théoden is still laughing, suddenly Gandalf takes off the gray cloak, revealing the
white cloaks that he now wears. Théoden screams.)
Gandalf: I will draw you Saruman as poison is drawn from a wound.
(Théoden slams back against the throne, Gandalf gets closer pointing his staff at
Théoden. Éowyn enters and tries to run to Théoden, but Aragorn grabs her and stops
her.)
Aragorn: Wait.
Théoden: If I go, Théoden dies.
(Gandalf again throws him back against the throne with his staff.)
Gandalf: You could not kill me, you will not kill him.
Théoden: Rohan is mine.
(Gandalf throws him against the throne again.)
Gandalf: Be gone.
(Théoden screams and lunges at Gandalf, he hits Théoden with the staff. Saruman slides
across the floor in Orthanc. Théoden moans and slides down in the chair. Aragorn lets Éowyn
go and she runs over and catches Théoden. She puts him back up in the throne. His face
begins to change back into the younger Théoden. Éowyn smiles at him.)
Théoden: I know your face. Éowyn. Éowyn. Gandalf?
Gandalf: Breathe the free air again my friend. - บันเทิง
Rest in Peace Bernard Hill. 😔
HAIL THE VICTORIOUS DEAD!!!!
Yeah. Just found out he died from a Count Dankula video. A real shame. RIP.
LONG LIVED THE KING
RIP. :(
Hail king Theoden of Rohan!!!! Rip
I like to think that guard at the door knew exactly what that staff could do, he even stops that one guy from charging in to the fight.
He knew his king needed help
And the only one who has common sense amongst the rest he whispered: That’s Gandalf ... I want to make it to retirement let’s not today friend
indeed
His name is Háma, and he knew exactly what he was doing. Quote:
"The staff in the hand of a wizard may be more than a prop for age."
He was the captain of Théoden's guardand became a good friend of the group, before his passing at Helm's Deep (although I believe he died in the Warg attack in the movie, could be wrong though)
Yep! In the book, Háma (the guard) comes pretty close to outright saying he knows what the staff does, but he trusts Gandalf to do the right thing. You can kind of get the same vibe here - "take the staff" came from Wormtongue, and the look on Háma's face here *screams* that he finds the fact that he answers to Wormtongue *disgusting.*
"The courtesy of your hall is somewhat lessened of late" is a line Im gonna start using whenever I go visit family
That's some Kenny Banya stuff!
❤
As we all should
I got a great laugh out of this. I actually lol'ed.
This is what I will tell my wife's family if they ever start being arsewipes. As it stands our families have a strong alliance.
Not once have i noticed before that Legolas helps Gandalf *walk* by giving him an arm to lean on. Such wicked tricksters!
And Gandalf holds the staff in a way that it is inperceptible from a distance, so worm can't see he still has it until he's close
@@Tirfing88 Only when the camera angle is at his face. As he's walking in he's holding it up. It switches positions a couple times, as the scene progresses and it has always driven me fucking BATSHIT
@@RovingTroll I just realized that, right in this moment. Now that is gonna annoy me everytime I watch it.
@@gangweed3244 It's not an accident it's for visual effect. It's shown down when head on to portray that he's hiding it from grima, and it's shown up when from the side to portray that he's not just completely carrying it, as he did just claim he needs it. It may help alleviate frustration with "inaccuracies" in movies to consider that decisions are made first and foremost to tell a story, all other factors, such as smooth object motion transitions, come second
Deceitful old people. Lol

"You would not part an old man of his walking stick."
"I would not part an old man of his walking stick."
Gandalf might not have "Saruman's voice" bu he's still a Maiar. 😁

Clever.
i knew it..he is a Jedi.
@@Dr_Do-Little - A Maia. Maiar is the plural form.
"I have not passed through fire and death to bandy crooked words with a witless worm." I LOVE THAT LINE
It’s so badass. Gandalf is one of the strongest beings in Middle Earth at that time; Grima is just a man.
"his staff? I told you to take the wizards staff!"
🙌🏼
It's the equivalent of "I will not argue with uncultured swine"
Gandalf has no time for Grima’s bullshit
That small wink Gandalf gives Aragon before they enter the throne, that some good acting
I tried winking at all of my auditions but they never gave me a part.
I love Aragorn's knowing smirk 0:45
He wasn't acting. He actually winked.
The Captain of the Guard is the unsung MVP here. Lets Gandalf in with his staff, and stops others from drawing their weapons on the gang. Dude knew what was up.
A small act of resistance that helped save the kingdom. Shame he got his face ripped off by a warg.
@@timovangalen1589 His name is Hama and in the books Hama dies protecting the gates of Helms deep. Hama was the gate keeper of Hornburg !
"I go to my fathers'.. In whose mighty company I shall not now feel ashamed". RIP Bernard Hill (December 17, 1944 - May 5, 2024), aged 79
You will be remembered as a legend. A great actor play a great character like Theoden.
TO THE KING. . . .
Good one 👍
The actor for Theoden King was simply amazing in this role. He truly reminded me of the old King Arthur and HUGE medieval movies Hollywood used to do. I would love to see him in one more role like this.. Biblical like King David or Solomon would work amazing as well.
Watched scorpion king and it kinda made me laugh to see bernard hill as a mad inventor.
Play Fable III.
Wolf Hall, too. Duke of Norfolk
Bernard Hill.
Total Legend.
He was also in Shirley valentine the movie
"You have no power here, Gandalf the Gray."
(Takes off his gray cloak to reveal one of the best loopholes in a fantasy story)
It would have been better if he was naked under it and was fully erected and shot a huge wad on Theoden’s face
i fear you forget, the best loophole. I AM NO MAN.
@@claytonparfumorse3101isn’t he a spirit basically who’s been around since the beginning? I read it a decade ago lol.
@@wendigojimmay9150 Aye. Gandalf is like an lesser Angel. When he "dies" and comes back as Gandalf the white, he's pretty much been given a power up and permission to use more power by god. Even as Gandalf the Grey he could flatten that entire city though.
@@Cavthena - The Istari were put under two absolute bans: they could not reveal themselves in their true form and power, and they were not permitted to use their power to dominate others. They were given human bodies, with all of the human frailties and weaknesses, so they could advise and guide the Free People without controlling them, that had been done in ages past and it never ended well. That is why Sauruman failed and was ultimately dispersed rather than allowed to return to Valimar, he tried to become a god.
RIP Bernard Hill, you will forever reign as the King of Rohan
0:40
The guard's face is just "I know that's bullshit, you're a wizard, of course it's bullshit, but I'm not gonna say anything because I might look like an asshole if I do."
For sure. But I think he knew and trusted Gandalf, and also knew that the King had been corrupted by wormtongue, so he let it slide - probably hoping he would do something like he did.
Political correctness wins the day! XD
Political Correctness played a key role in the fate of Middle Earth.
You see him later stopping a fellow guard from getting in the fight, so he was with Gandalf, just couldn't say it.
That, or he was just saving his guard buddy from getting his ass laid out.
Accurate description of the guard’s reaction.
"You have no power here..."
"AW CLEAN CLOTHES!"
😂
That transformation scene always amazes me by it's quality.
incredible film work indeed
This movie is 22 years old at time of writing (god I'm old) and that transformation STILL stands up. It's so flawless.
I love how Legolas helps Gandalf walk into the hall as if he actually really needed help going into the hall, and even the cheeky little wink he gives Aragorn like 'I win!' and Aragorn's smirk like 'this wizard...'
Dude , I totally missed that … great catch !!!
Éowyn is too precious in this scene! She and Éomer were practically Théoden’s kids. Miranda Otto’s expression to see her family recover is such a genuine emotion. I cannot get over how perfect the casting is!
Theodred was Theoden's son, but Eomer and Eowyn, his sister's children, were beloved of him as if they were his son and daughter, too.
After the death of their parents, Theoden took them as his own, and to Theodred they were beloved siblings more than cousins.
Thanks for just saying what the original comment had said 🙄@@GuukanKitsune
@JT-93 He said they were 'practically his kids.' I named their ACTUAL RELATION. I expanded the original statement.
Eomer and Eowyn were the children of Theoden's sister, not brother. I think Theoden only had sisters. @@GuukanKitsune
@barby6071 You're probably right. In fact you are right, they're his sister's children by Eomund.
"You have no power here, Gandalf the Grey."
"It's a Tide ad."
Brilliant response! 🇨🇦🖖🏻🇨🇦
I HAVE THE POWER OF ALL FABRIC BLEACH!
If the white hair and staff didn't giveaway that he was no longer Gandolf the Gray, you need to rub your eyes once more.
To be fair, Gandalf doesn’t really stay in one place for long, and is often wandering in ME, so people will often forget what he looks like.... except of course for the signature looks like the pointy hat.... then again I was about to say big GREY beard... so yeah you right xD
@@swiggityswoogity705 But it's also Saruman speaking by that point. As a fellow member of the Istari, he should know something is 'wrong'.
His eyes were literally clouded over lol. He could probably barely see anything at all, but a bright light in front of your face is pretty hard to miss
@@swiggityswoogity705 Yeah, we take having photos of people for granted these days. In the past, people could go missing and no one could spot them since there were few to no pictures of the lost.
Theoden was a tad visually impaired by Saruman’s possession. No wonder he couldn’t see the nice new white outfit Gandalf was modelling! 🇨🇦🖖🏻🇨🇦
"You have no power here, Gandalf the Grey"
...Yes that might've been the case if I weren't Gandalf the White! *WHOOSH*
I like how Hama stops the other soldier of Theoden.
His look says "Don't. They mean no harm to our king, and mean him much HELP instead. Let them."
I think the guys that attacked were Grima's only.
3:00 That subtle look of utter shock and amazement, and nervous swallow from Legolas.
Elves in the Tolkien-verse see with more than just eyes. What we see is what the humans there all see: a bright light from Gandalf as he casts off his cloak and reveals his fancy new white robes. But what Legolas sees at least a glimpse of is Gandalf's *true form* , a maia of incomprehensible might and beauty. The power Gandalf is using here, in direct conflict with Saruman's power, has not been seen in Middle Earth in an age. And Legolas is the *only one* who can see what it truly is, like a "Biblically-accurate Angel", when everyone else only sees a pretty man with wings.
Legolas is not a Calaquendi, the sindar/silvan elves werent very magical. He could barely see much at all. People like Galadriel, Glorfindel elves who were graced by the 2 trees have that strong magical connection, Frodo sees Glorfindels true form in FOTR same as Legolas would perceive Gandalfs here very loosely.
@@crabberdabberye But Legolas would know better than anyone else in the room the true scale of the battle of magic and will happening in front of him.
Got to love Aragon’s coy smile at the response
It's even better because if you look closely you can see that right before that, Gandalf winks at him.
These movies have aged remarkably well, a true testament to their greatness and timelessness. I wish Jackson would do The Silmarillion next. He's the only one who can do it justice.
The silmarillion is a collection of unfinished tales, so i hope he doesnt.
You obviously haven’t read it

(17 December 1944 - 5 May 2024)
The one dislike was Saruman
And if there is a second it will be from grima
The rest: all the orcs and Uruk-hai killed
That scene with Eowyn makes me cry everytime I watch it. And when Gandalf hands him the sword. Is an epic and emotional scene. :(
Das ist, weil Eowyn weiß, dass Theoden noch nicht vom Tod seines Sohnes weiß.
Sadly we Gandalf isn't in our world and we lost our king of Rohan in 2024. One day we will meet on the white shores and the far green country and beyond. Rest in Peace Bernard Hill
Gandalf holding onto legolas, to keep the "old man" act up. I didnt notice it at first. Legolas is a nice young man , just helping an old man cross the street. Lol
The effect is a little lessened because they mixed takes, but he also holds his staff horizontally to avoid Grima catching on early.
The door guard had treasure beyond counting under his care, Glamdring and Anduril.
Anduril appears later. Before Rohan rides to Gondor, Elrond shows up and sets Aragorn on his quest to summon the oathbreakers to fulfill their pledge
@@chadmargraf4020 Yes, and it's different in the movies than in the books. In the books I believe aragorn gets anduril when the fellowship visits Elrond.
I love how Gandalf never looked to make sure if any guard was upon him. He implicitely trusted his companions to guard him as he made his way to Théoden's throne.
I love that and I hate how this is the first time I’ve ever seen it mentioned
It helps when you’ve got three of the best fighters in Middle Earth running interference for you
The fact he didn't use his "walking stick" when walking into the hall, after making a scene and leaning on Lego's arm 😂😂😂
The way Eowyn looks at Thèoden as his face changes. She conveys familial love so profoundly here. Very touching to an old sop like me.
"you would not part an old man from his walking stick"
watching out for that trick should definitely be on the evil overlord list
The Evil Overlord List is probably one of the most genius bits of writing I've read. There's a Dragonball villain one that is really good too.
i cant believe its brad dourif as wormtongue. hes chuckys (child play) voice! an amazing perform here as well.

I think most of the people in the room know what’s going on. That is why almost no one wants to rush help that Wormtongue.
The only ones that goes are unarmed. The "real Rohan riders" understand (somewhat) what's going on.
how can these movies be so good in dialogue? We are a disgrace, current generation of directors just ruined cinema
Speak softly, and carry a wizard's staff.
hah, gandalf winked at aragorn 0:44 after convincing the guard. and aragorn is trying not to smile afterwards.

The moment Magneto told off Chucky and Count Dooku
And the tinkerer moved from helping the arcadian to becoming king
Chucky!?
@@lochness5524 Yep, Brad Dourif who plays Grima Wormtongue, also does the voice for Chucky.
The subtle wink to Aragorn before they enter the hall is telling.
I really like Hama's knowing look when he lets Gandalf in with his staff. He knows exactly what he is doing and that Gandalf/Mithrandir might be the last chance his King and Master has.
This is one of the most powerful teams in all of fiction
Ill news is an ill guest! I say that whenever someone knocks on my door
I find myself cracking up when theoden says
"Why... should I welcome *YOU*?"

@@seanwolslau-holdren6731 BE GONE.
It is because Saruman's voice is one of his main, "special," qualities, particularly in the book. He is noted for having a beautiful, enchanting, bewitching voice that literally gets his victims to do as he says. Since he's talking directly to another Maiar, and one he knows now to be his better, his voice is no longer matching the smooth, beautiful, charming, bewitching style he could or even tended to use with others. He loses all control and growls with rage at the end. It's amazing exchange between two incredible actors. Thanks for bringing that up. It was so interesting to analyse.
Rest in Peace and Honor, Bernard Hill!
❤⚔️🌟
Gimili's growl! I fucking love hearing it.
I would stay still if i were near him. ;)
Even without his weapon, Gimli still fucked shit up.
I love how once they get into the throne room, Gandalf immediately gets to work freeing Theoden. No fanfare, no games, no grand speech. Just straight to work with the longest part being Gandalf walking across the room while Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli are kicking ass.
God that little wink from Gandalf is always my favourite moment of this scene.
Never noticed the blood from Sarumans eyes before! Damn near murdered Saruman through the King
Look at his forehead. Gandalf’s staff is marked on it.
The Thunder timed with his palm opening to Theoden is such a perfect subtle detail.
Man…A serious injustice to end the video before the best 30sec of the scene
Nobody is taking that wizard's staff. They didn't even try. At this point, Gandalf is beyond Sauramon and rivaling Galadriel in power.
Even as Gandalf the Grey he is far more powerful than Galadriel or any of the elves for that matter. He is a Maia after all.
Even as a kid, I always loved 3:00 and Legolas reaction. Elves are known for showing no emotion, and right there, when a white wizard reveals himself in his true form, an elf gets a huge shudder down his spine.
OMG! This hits so differently now since Bernard Hill's passing.
Wait a minute...no it doesn't. This is still the same emotionally, brilliant acting that it was 20+ years ago.
RIP Sir Bernard Hill/Theoden King!
Brad Dorrif is a great actor. When McKellen tells him to keep his tongue behind his teeth, he subtly does it very cold and cooly. Just great acting! 🧊

"I know your face", that line always works for me like a charm.
Every scene, every dialog, every act of this movie has no comparison. None, out there match this best art of the whole art verse.
This trilogy is the best yet.

When I'm late: A wizard arrives precisely when he means to.
When someone else is late: Late is the hour in which this conjurer chose to appear.
I love that this scene shows that above all, Gandalf is clever. Sure he has magical powers and is basically superhuman physically, but it's his wits that win him this engagement.
