I love how Sauron appears here. First, you notice that he appears like he did during the war of the last alliance, even as a spirit form, because after the downfall of Numenor he could never again take a fair form, which is a nice attention to detail. Second, how he appears wreathed in flames, which since fire is destructive and deadly, helps to show his god like nature, he's a force of nature almost, not some typical evil. Third how he toys with him, not even speaking beyond a bit at the start, because he's not evil for the sake of it, he is pure evil, same as the orcs, corrupted by the darkness.
Sauron corrupted most of the people of Numenor, including it's king, into worshipping Melkor and being vengeful against the Valar for withholding immortality. He knew that, above all, Men fear death. And he played that. King Ar-Pharazon (at Sauron's urging) took the immense Numenorian naval fleet to invade the Undying Lands. This caused Eru Illuvatar, the Creator, to intervene directly which is an extremely rare occurrence. He caused Numenor to sink beneath the waves (think Atlantis) and Sauron was caught up in it's destruction. His spirit fled to Mordor but because of it, it was said he was said to "no longer be able to take a fair form." This might parallel Melkor, the one Sauron followed. As he weakened and used up his power, he lost the ability to shapeshift and remained a Dark Lord in form.
I'm not exactly sure about the destructiveness of Sauron. I think it's in the Silmarillion that he is described as loving order, complex schemes and such. A perfectionist.

I like how in this movie they showed that Sauron still has his physical form, and that the eye is simply another manifestation of him in the movies. Whereas in the books he actually had physical form and was the one who tortured Golum. And the flaming eye was more of a symbol used by the orcs.
@@dean8525 Not weak, as beings they are equal. Thing is Sauron gets "buffed" when he's in his places of great evil (this is an ultra simplistic explaination of LOTR lore, but it's the most effective layman's explanation). Let's also not forget that Gandalf is also a glass cannon in his human form, he has great power but it's all bound into a mortal form (a human body). He literally just tanked a vicious, planted mace hit straight to the chest from an exceptionally powerful warrior of sauron not even two minutes before the duel with Sauron, he was in an injured and weakened state.
I appreciate that they didn't try to explain Sauron's backstory and reasons for becoming a villain, the way Disney often does nowadays. He remains this enigmatic, primordial, powerful foe with reasons of his own, who cannot be negotiated with, and who isn't somebody the viewer can really relate to. Almost a force of nature. Looking at you, Halbrand-totally-not-Sauron. By the time of War of the Ring, and most likely the Hobbit, Sauron definitely gained his physical body back; Smeagol has been tortured by a man with four fingers, and Orcs tell of him as going from place to place. Tolkien described Sauron's human form as "that of a man of more than human stature, but not gigantic". So, someone over 6'4'', perhaps pushing 7 feet or more, but still definitely human looking. In Return of the King script, at one point Aragorn was supposed to fight Sauron in his Annatar form. That idea was discarded for good reasons, and I'm glad they went the same route here, although Sauron's human shape can be glimpsed through fire and shadow.
Halbrand won't be Sauron sadly. Sauron is already at the Elf King's table, in their council. That is why Celebrimbor has started building his forge, how they knew about Mythril, and why the king wears the same armor as Ardar. In the book, Sauron is the Lord of Gifts. He gave these gifts, the armor, and that is how we know where he is.
This is where the Hobbit trilogy really started to lose me. Yeah it looks cool, but I refuse to believe that after getting bodied by Sauron and tossed in a birdcage, Gandalf just hangs out for 60 years not concerned whatsoever with Sauron having such an active presence. He was more paranoid about Sauron's return in this trilogy than he was in LOTR, but had a fraction of the evidence. "Orcs attacked us on the road" = The Enemy has returned! *ragdolled by sinister ancient god and names him* = I don't have any answers. I must see the head of my order.
Well I'm pretty sure gandalf was under the impression that after Galadriel banished him and Saruman said that he'd "finish the job" so Sauron wasn't much of a threat anymore. Gandalf was also unaware that the one ring is now in Bilbo's possession. So that's why he wasn't so worried in the 60 years between the trilogies until he discovered that Bilbo had the one ring.
I only noticed it unfinished when Gandalf used his shield of light, but in the part where Sauron reveals himself it looked very badass and somehow it seemed very well done to me

@@yoshidinono8095 She knew it was before LOTR but course she never read the book. So she thought Sauron only returned in LOTR after Gandalf found the One Ring from Bilbo. So not retarded (poor choice of word), but someone who just watched a movie for what it was without reading the books.
Third how he toys with him, not even speaking beyond a bit at the start, because he's not evil for the sake of it, he is pure evil, same as the orcs, corrupted by the darkness.
may i ask why couldn't Sauron take a fair form after the fall of Numenor? what's the connection betweet Numenor and Sauron?
Sauron corrupted most of the people of Numenor, including it's king, into worshipping Melkor and being vengeful against the Valar for withholding immortality. He knew that, above all, Men fear death. And he played that. King Ar-Pharazon (at Sauron's urging) took the immense Numenorian naval fleet to invade the Undying Lands. This caused Eru Illuvatar, the Creator, to intervene directly which is an extremely rare occurrence. He caused Numenor to sink beneath the waves (think Atlantis) and Sauron was caught up in it's destruction. His spirit fled to Mordor but because of it, it was said he was said to "no longer be able to take a fair form."
This might parallel Melkor, the one Sauron followed. As he weakened and used up his power, he lost the ability to shapeshift and remained a Dark Lord in form.
Sauron looks kind of strange. Smokes and stuff.
I'm not exactly sure about the destructiveness of Sauron. I think it's in the Silmarillion that he is described as loving order, complex schemes and such. A perfectionist.
@@BibleJames Sauron is definitely pure evil but hes not destructive. He wants to rule and dominate over everything. Hes like a psychopath, if he destroyed his toys like Morgoth wanted then he couldnt have his fun.
When you realize, Sauron was very weakened here (he had only a small fraction of his power), and even though, he was just toying with Gandalf.
That´s movie´s version. Gandalf is seriously nerfed here.
Yeah I know it's a movie version, but also in the books Sauron is way stronger and more powerful than Gandalf.
@@gioeleqr97 Because Gandalf and the other wizards their actual power is not allowed by the gods themselves as it would destroy the world.

Really, Peter? Was this really a good time to insert a Wilhelm scream?
Nice haha
Thrain getting yeeted away with that crunchy Wilhelm Scream sound effect looks like a shitpost but it's really in the movie
Yo it's crazy how they managed to stop Sauron. The dude was too OP man holy crap
This is how a intimidating villain should be ,a very shadow is merely enough to invoke terror.
This is what I expected to see in Rings of Power. A formless shadow that you can't see coming, not the Venom symbiote behaving like a giant amoeba.
These movies were just awesome.
3:10 to this day, this is STILL CHILLING!
Lesson learned: don’t chase Gandalf onto a bridge.
Okay, stupid Wilhelm scream aside, are we not gonna acknowledge that Sauron basically ate Thrain? I mean, that was actually pretty horrifying!
I wouldn’t say “he” ate him but the darkness itself consumed him…
This scene is better than whole LOTR Rings of Power tv show
And yet Ring of powers is awesome you just another ignorant hater how boring.

the sound effects in this scene are EPIC
2:24 - The Wilhelm scream is a stock sound effect that has been used in a number of films and TV series, beginning in 1951 with the film Distant Drums. The scream is usually used when someone is shot, falls from a great height or is thrown from an explosion.
Yes, but the rule was to only use it for background characters during action scenes. Not for plot important characters such as Thorins father.
It's so over used and out of place that it basically ruins every movie it's put in.
@@1braincellwhm Not always, though. The Imperial officer in Return of the Jedi for example, and the from the first two Indiana Jones movies. Sometimes it fit fits the tone, most of the time it doesn't.
Like in Star Wars attack of the clones 😂
@@gandalf8216 For any movie from this decade and onwards, IMHO, it's a sympton of a bad movie. It's far too overused to be used comedically and too recognizable to be used seriously.
Using the Wilhelm Scream at this scene was just pure disrespect for that poor dwarf.
Not gonna lie. A nerdy part of me did go: "Welcome back, Sauron."
loved that gandalfs first concussion grenade to azog
Gandalf has a habit of facing off against enemies at cliffs
Halbrand are you ? 😂

I might be one of the few, but I personally love The Hobbit trilogy.
I always love to watch benedict cumberbatch motion capture the dragon, it's so good
You’re not the only one
This scene was the highlight of the Hobbit trilogy for me, shows the power of Sauron. They did Thrain dirty with the Wilhelm scream though

Totally un-canon. In the books Sauron left Dol Guldur simply by suspecting that the White Council would attack him there.
@@davidnixon6803 Sauron left because he was ready to move back to Mordor. He had even left Dol Guldur once already when Gandalf made a check up at the place, but returned lafter after Gandalf left.^^ Kinda funny how it went back and forth for many years.

This feels more like a video game cutscene than the cinematic masterpiece that we deserved.
Aye. The Hobbit movies were a complete disaster compared to The Lord Of The Rings. I believe even Peter Jackson himself said that during all the years of shooting The Hobbit, he never really actually had a clue what the hell was going on, because WAY too much was going on. It's a shame.
@@thesoundsofonehandclapping Do you have some source on this?

@@gutzimmumdo4910 I think it is very safe to say that the hobbit movies were an absolute disaster, especially compared to The Lord of The Rings. If the Hobbit would have come out before the LOTR trilogy, there's big chances it would've flopped completely.

I came back here once again. Now in order to get rid of the vile image of Sauron from the Rings of Power.
2:25 ain't noway they used the same soundbyte from a victim screaming from the Hercules game for ps1 in the city gets hit with demons level
I like how in this movie they showed that Sauron still has his physical form, and that the eye is simply another manifestation of him in the movies.
Whereas in the books he actually had physical form and was the one who tortured Golum. And the flaming eye was more of a symbol used by the orcs.
Sauron did have an imposing gaze though. That is one of his main features. So the eye symbol was not coming from nothing so to speak.
Sauron : “I’m tired of playing”
Gandalf calls him “SORE-on” instead of “SOW-ron”.
i loved this scene it showed how powerful gandalf is
And how weak he is compared to Sauron
@@dean8525 Not weak, as beings they are equal. Thing is Sauron gets "buffed" when he's in his places of great evil (this is an ultra simplistic explaination of LOTR lore, but it's the most effective layman's explanation). Let's also not forget that Gandalf is also a glass cannon in his human form, he has great power but it's all bound into a mortal form (a human body). He literally just tanked a vicious, planted mace hit straight to the chest from an exceptionally powerful warrior of sauron not even two minutes before the duel with Sauron, he was in an injured and weakened state.

This whole scene was more epic than the entire first season of that abomanation from Amazon.
Abomination is the haters and trolls idiots like you pathetic 🫥
I literally lost my shit in the theater when Sauron showed up
I appreciate that they didn't try to explain Sauron's backstory and reasons for becoming a villain, the way Disney often does nowadays.
Kind of a weird position given the fact that Sauron does have a full backstory written by the author. It's not as though they'd be fabricating it.
You seem to know nothing of LOTR lore.. also how the hell would Halbrand be Sauron lol. Even in fair form, it wouldn't make sense.
@@sullychow4123 * Ron Swanson voice, condecendingly *

@@sullychow4123 I literally said Halbrand isn't Sauron. Furthermore, he is Annatar in the books, just like I said.
Please learn to read.
Manu Bennett really created a great orc voice for Azog.
2:24 out of reason 😂
Sauron, Lord of the Bass

Thrain really loved his son. His last moments alive he was only thinking about his son.
When I first saw this film in theaters they played it in high quality frame rate and when the scene when Sauron did that effect at the end of this video I dam near have a eye stroke.
I love this scene, because it shows all the terrifying power of Sauron like never before. I especially love that moment when he tries to get back into physical form for a second, but he fails because he's missing the One Ring. I also find it
It's also impressive how Gandalf is terrified of Sauron at this point, even though he is a Maia and was sent to Arda for the sole purpose of fighting him.
The way he just keeps the orcs at bay with ease
Maiar vs maiar fights are the best.
