  • Here is an updated review on the Sennheiser Momentum 3 wireless ANC headphones. Overall a GREAT bluetooth headphone. I definitely recommend these headphones.
I'm comparing the sound of SM3s to the HD 6XX plugged into a SMSL SP200 888 AAA Amp from a Fiio M11 source.

wow this is a really a truly great review. I watched like 30 other videos on TH-cam about this Momentum 3 and got tired of all Noice Cancellation stuff and comparing with Sony or Bose headphones. The only thing I care about is the Sound Quality and how does it sound in comparison with a pair of wired headphones, cuz that's the selling point of this product, but nobody mentioned it. This is the video that I was looking for. Very informative and direct to the point. Good job!!!
PS: I played this video at 1.25x playback speed, and it sounds perfect. But it's just my opinion

Great review! I have them for 9 months now and I love them! I had the same issue with the reduced friction from day 1 in the right cap and I resolved it by using a few rounds of thread around the round knob in both sides of the metallic band. That tightened them up so now they stay wherever I set them. Regarding the sound, although they sound great from bluetooth, they sound their best when I connect them to my MacBook or my iPad with the USB-C cable using their own DAC and listening to FLAC or WAV tracks with VLC. Another nice feature is that the EQ from their app is set on their memory so you don’t need the app after you set it, if you connect them by cable for example. For some heavy base oriented tracks, I may use -6db, -3db, -3db or -3db, 0db, 0db EQ settings but that always comes down to personal preference. Again, great review!

It doesn't seem to be widely known that the Momentum 3's can be powered off without folding them up. Hold down the "play/pause" button for 5 seconds or so. You will hear "Power Off" as confirmation. To power back on, you will need to fold up the headphones and then open them back up. Works great and useful for those that want to put these on a regular stand.

    • @southpark4151

I like the feature that allows us to power-down using the button. But I don't like the feature that requires users to fold and then re-open in order to power-up the system again. It's not convenient to do. Also - the more folding and unfolding we do ---- something is just gong to wear out faster, such as the wear on mechanical/electrical system that does the power-up could probably lead to reliability issues earlier, rather than later. Also - I don't like the sharp corners of the metal bits that folds up, combined with the spring snap-out feature. This combination forms a finger-nipping trap for unsuspecting users. If the fingers just so-happen to have their finger in that gap when the phones does the spring-loaded flip-out, then it maybe possible for the finger to be nipped, and even a chunk take out of a finger. They should have rounded off the sharp corners on the metal bits at the folding section.

@@pongchannel. It was too late unfortunately. I sent in Momentum 2 OEBT for repair - but was unrepairable. So I was sent a pair of Momentum 3. I just didn't expect that the design of Momentum 3 would be flawed. The Momentum 2 OEBT design is so nice. My verdict for Momentum 3 - is a fail --- based on the inability to turn on the device when it is unfolded and powered-down; and also due to the hazardous spring-loaded finger nipping gap at the pivoting/folding joint area.

Nailed it! Getting into the audiophile game is filled amazing moments but man did it make me a snob. I forgot the fun factor of a headphone because reviewers, many of which I enjoy obviously, push the ‘it’s gotta be neutral’ narrative. The headphones that get me bobbing my head and groovin’ are always out of the range of neutral. Everything has its strengths...so long as you’re into it! That’s the way I see it.

it's been almost two years I wanted to buy a headphone and I've been watching and reading all kinds of reviews and also saving money.
but the thing is where I live these kinds of stuff are overpriced and compared to salaries too expensive (full salary of 2or3 months of an average job) so I can't buy several pair of headphones with amps and dacs and other gears so I wanted something that's really good in terms of sound which does not need an amp and also something that can last few years accordingly changed my choice from momentum 3 to dt177x go. I'd appreciate a consult from you on my choice (sorry for my bad English)

I totally agree I have both the Xm4 and M3 and the xm4 are alot more comfortable. I can only wear the M3 for an hour before i start feeling the pressure around the earcups. The sound on the M3 is powerful and emersive, the vocals are a little brought back but they sound crystal clear. The Xm4 sound crummy out of the box however i sat down I played with the eq and the are alot better then stock. Also got the Xm4 for 270 vs momentum 3 for 350. I think i may just keep both because I use the xm4 is super comfortable and good to workout with. The sennheisser M3 is a sit down and listen headphone to me.

I just bought a set of these secondhand for some functions missing off my sennheiser momentum 2s. The first thing I noticed was the arms sliding down (esp the right cup). This *feature* if it is one, isn't on my 4 yr momentum 2s, which has retained the grip it had from new. I have resorted to duct tape on both arms so the cups stay put & I don't have to walk like I have a book on my head to stop the headphones falling off my head. That aside , the inside of the headband is much softer than the 2s. Even with the duct tape though the 2s have the better, tighter fit. (Most headphones are too big for me even on the smallest setting). The other thing I've noticed is they don't take equualising well. There is barely any difference when making significant shifts, this includes on high quality resolution downloads. I'm not sure if this is just this pair or an issue with this model.

Would you recommend me the m3? I am not really an audiophile, I dont understand bass and all that but I love listening to music.

    • @HeadphoneChamps
      @HeadphoneChamps  3 ปีที่แล้ว

The m3s can get quite heavy after long hours of listening. The sliders get looser overtime which make it even worse. Someone in this comment section suggested buying rubber O rings to keep the sliders in place so I think that should work well. If you're mainly listening to lectures go for XM4s. If you want to feel more of an impact in music go for the M3s but you will be sacrificing comfort for audio quality.

I spoke more about this on my first review on this channel. I believe these headphones were specifically for bluetooth use and they do a great job at it! If you're looking specifically for wired headphones though I say go with something else. But for bluetooth you can't go wrong with the SM3s especially if you like clean, deep heavy bass.

Just on the sliders becoming loose - mine are too new for me to have this issue, but online, lots of people have just popped a cheap rubber o-ring around each side (16mm or 3/4 inch is size I have seen mentioned the most).
Also, I read one UK user saying that Sennheiser provided him with a detailed guide of how to fix this without having to send it back to them, with a back up that if he failed or broke something, they would fix it under warranty.

I later read someone else who described a process involving prising off the silver circle with Sennheiser logo on it, which I think was referring to the same method described by Sennheiser. I'll see if I can find it. However, personally I'd go with the much simpler, very discrete o-ring method.

I went for the Sony’s for the fact they were new and was expecting a lot of updates etc as they tried to differentiate from the XM3’s. This hasent happened. As I have the XM4’s though is there enough of a difference in the sound to warrant having both, esp thinking of these wired as well as BT? Or would it make more sense to go for the drop thx panda maybe if sound over BT rather than a travel pair of BT ANC headphones is important as I already have that in the Sony’s, problem is my driver would be apple iPad or iPhone so no EQ.

I own 660s and run them through Corpse Cable/ Cardas Audio $300 balanced cable Nd wS hoping to find someone who has a similar setup when talking about Sennheiser. Also, good point about audiophiles and other TH-camrs, future headphones - so may good points! I haven’t unpacked my Momentum yet but watching this! Btw, one TH-camr also pointed out that sliding mechanism is failing. I can’t use anything but Sennheiser. I have a few different pairs and even if they have flaws I will still love them.
Update: So, I listened to both Momentum 3 and Sony 1000XM4. Updated the firmware to their latest. Set the EQ to flat. Sennheiser wins this easily. So much better sound! Also, the bass is better even though people claim that Sony wins in this category. Then I adjusted the EQ on both of them to my liking. Still, Sennheiser won. I couldn't make Sony sound and reveal some instruments like Momentum does. HiHats, cymbals, etc. The sound is fuller and wider. The design is way better and feels premium when compared to Sony. The only advanced Sony has is they are lighter but I don't care about that, also more tech whoever needs it. If you want better sound then Momentums is the way to go. Sony sounds good, I wouldn't mind having them as a second pair for traveling but that's until you tried Momentums. If you want ANC, and other tech stuff then Sony is a better option. I personally love physical buttons but what I really like in Sony's is that you can dim the sound by covering the ear cup.

I don't like the sharp corners of the metal bits that folds up, combined with the spring snap-out feature. I also don't like the power-on feature when we unfold the phone. Tested the B&O, B&W, XM4 yesterday. Then we were walking by and saw the Sennheiser, so we gave it a try. Its a level above the rest. The Sony is half the price compared with the rest. USD 265 for Sony, USD 600 for B&O, USD 500 for B&W and Sennheiser. Hmmmmm decisions decisions.

Wow Sennheiser momentum 3 relatively expensive where you are. Here in UK, Sony XM4 and M3 are roughly same price on Amazon (in fact, XM4, are usually slightly more expensive due to having less discounts than M3)
