  • In this video I review the Sennheiser momentum 3 wireless. A surprisingly detailed wireless headphone with a few quirks. How does it stack up against the competition?

    Love that you mention that the EQ settings stay on the headset. I tried 7 other headsets and kept these because of their sound quality and that you can keep the EQ settings while using them wired. The XM4, etc, are basically unusable when wired because of their overdriven, muddy bass. However, I do disagree on the soundstage. I use -6/0/0 EQ settings, and these have a soundstage better than EVERY single wireless and closed back headphones I've tried, and honestly rivals some of the open-back headphones. Try listening to "Sessions at the 17th ward" with these and compare to other cans and tell me what you think about soundstage.

      exactly....i had the xb950n1s as my portable/bass cans. Those ACTUALLY worked duel driven with 3.5mm and the included amp....IMO the last generation that sony had this usability. I could crank down bass in the app first/step via BT or tune the HP to a specific genre....then plug into my schiit stack and ENJOY full depth/range/staging w.o distortion that the 900/910 x series had presented when connected directly to my LG G8x quad dac....in a Best buy demo/comparison seeing as my 950n1s swivel snapped TERRIBLE AF Design might i add...had gotten the bass cans for 119$ liquidated and had a replacement plan IRONICALLY the 900N were 300$ box price. And largely terrible when actually driven with an external device by comparison. The xm3/xm4 offered a sound signature closer to what the xb950n1 were capable of when properly eq/driven. Generally off pure BT it was somewhat negligible between both XB 950n1 and 900...as XB/bass cans...the HIGH RES X series largely won out and should based on better drivers/price point etc. EVER since ive YET to replace what the XB950n1 had brought to the table. Good staging/resolution/bass...and

    Man can’t thank you enough for doing this review! I was hoping you’d do it because it’s YOU! Honestly I’ve become a fan! I have these and I love the silky smooth sound they offer. The bass can be reduced for those who don’t like it by dragging the slider down towards the bottom right on the X axis in the app. After that the sound is just luscious. I have an aversion towards headphones that are too sibilant. The Bowers and Wilkins PX7 and the AirPods max both get fatiguing after a while because they have really bright highs. The Sony XM4 have that warm sound that makes listening to music on them easy. The Sennheiser Momentum 3 take that a notch above by being bassy and neutral without the excessive warmth that often makes the bass bleed into the mids.

    Thanks for review.
    In order to fix this auto mute on and off bug you need to calibrate the feature in the app. This thing happened to me but after calibration never appeared again.
    Though I do find that the third ANC mode called relaxed or smth do has the most cabin pressure, the Max mode has close to none compared to QC35 II or XM4.
    You mentioned that the EQ settings only apply if you using them wireless only with ANC or transparency mode on? Uhmm.. I think I am missing something because it works as well with ANC turned off

  • @JennyDarukat
    @JennyDarukat 3 ปีที่แล้ว +44

    Honestly if they can figure out the software quirks, this sounds like a nice dual purpose/transportable kinda deal to me - having a wireless headphone that's also good wired and circumvents a laptop or tablet's inbuilt amp is such a big value add. But just how do these kinds of bugs happen, that's so odd..
    How is the latency in both wireless and type C? Seeing how using True Wireless models with a gaming setup is pretty much impossible/a bad experience, I think that's a nice possible benefit also with this that those kinds of solutions don't offer - hardly any wireless headphone can also be your only headphone, but this just might.

    • @sonypsp0009
      @sonypsp0009 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For me the software quirks haven't been as bad. I've had the on ear detection pause music on me sometimes from turning my head or something but usually either turning the feature on and off or just turning the headphone on and off will fix it. It recalibrates the sensor every time it's powered on so it helps to wait 5 or 6 seconds before putting them on. I think it's mainly just a little finnicky about how it's placed on the ear. But usually it works as intended for me. My biggest annoyance is probably with the multi device pairing (which is great to have I love it) but the way it works is it a bit annoying. If I'm watching a video on my laptop and try to scroll twitter on my phone if I pass any video on Twitter it'll pause the youtube video on the laptop because it thinks you're trying to play from the phone. and vice versa with the laptop when playing through the phone. But that's a bit easier to work around as you can just mute your twitter tab on a laptop to keep it from interrupting the phone. The convenience of being connected to two devices at once is worth dealing with the annoying bits of the implementation though!
      As far as latency goes, it's perfect with videos as far as my eyes can tell (wirelessly and USB C). I haven't been able to test it with gaming, however. I mainly play games on PS4 and sony doesn't let you connect any bluetooth headphones that aren't their own bluetooth gaming headsets specifically. Without using a bluetooth adapter out of the ps4 controller headphone jack. Which I don't have to test out unfortunately

    • @panchenima
      @panchenima 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After geting them as a gift for birthday (a week prior christmas) and using them a lot, i can say that the problem with the software is with the sensor giving false positives, if i'm on the desk and don't move the head a lot it never pauses, but on the go or in a more active stance the movement of the earcups arround will make the headset pause, i'd deactivated the autopause setting completely for now.
      In other news, the sound is superb in both wired modes (taking in account the source) i'm quite happy with them finding to be a great upgrade from my "great sounding but not for the go or outside my house" AKG K240 MKII and Bose Soundtrue among other headphones i have.

    • @Thomas_A_H
      @Thomas_A_H 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm quite sensitive to latency, but I must say that the Momentum 3 using aptX-LL work absolutely fine for gaming. So far I have used USB-C only for music, but I just did a quick test and-as expected-found no latency problems with that either, but it might be possible to get some line noise in this mode, e.g. when using a hub with a noisy power supply, so it might be best to connect them directly to your computer.
      I also have the Momentum TWS (the first version), which support aptX-LL too, and work fine for gaming. Sennheiser dropped support for LL in the Momentum TWS 2, so don't buy them for gaming, though in other aspects they should be better than the MTW1.
      On my PC I'm using the Avantree Leaf (also known as Avantree DG50) to get aptX-LL output.

    I have these, and I agree with most of what you are saying. However I think they sound decidedly better, no contest, compared to bose or sony. I'll mention though that I also picked up some Sennheiser GSP 670s. I was surprised that (to my ears) they have a far more neutral and detailed sound, in addition to working via bluetooth in addition to the dongle. So on phone calls, by GSP 670 is drastically better than momentum due to the boom mic, and it has a much better wireless connection than bluetooth, when connecting via the dongle to the computer. The 670 has completely replaced my momentums.

    I found a way to correct the mute during a call issue. When you first pull the M3's out and unfold them, you have to sit them on a flat surface for about 5 to 10 seconds then you can pick them up and use them and it will not act up, or mute during a call. Something to do with the M3's when they boot up, like they are calibrating the sensor when you open them for the vertical vs horizontal orientation.

If i am doing something like picking up stuff or sitting up to fast i get worried that they are gonna slide off never happened to me before but the feeling is there. There is just one thing that drives me insane, if you have ANC disabled and you stop the music you hear a tiny little squeaky noise in the right cup, bottom right, like a sensor adjusting, dont know what it is, cant find it online maybe i just had bad luck with the unit (Problem is gone when i turn on ANC). I didnt have the problems that you described with the software. Overall i really like them.

      Over the past month I have purchased and listened to several noise canceling headphones (Bose 700, Sony XM4, Apple Airpods Max, and Sennheiser M3). Last week I stopped by the Bang Olufsen store to listen to the H95's. For $800 I was not blown away by the sound, however they did sound clear, bright, and with good bass. For me personally I liked the sound but not at the $800 price point. I would say they are equal or a tad better to the Airpods Max for sound quality. Getting the B&O app to work with my iPhone in the store was time consuming and the app was having a hard time connecting with the B&O H95's, eventually after approx. 20 minutes I could use the app to adjust the EQ settings to my likening.
      I have since returned the Airpods Max and Bose 700. I now have the Sony XM4 and Sennheiser M3's, I just bought the M3's yesterday at my local Best Buy Magnolia and they were on sale for $349 (sale ended yesterday). After a short listening to the M3's, I prefer the sound of the M3's over the XM4's. I just can not adjust the XM4's EQ to my likening, they sound dull no matter what I do with the EQ. So it looks like I will be returning the XM4's this week.
      I will only be using these headphones around the house and in the back yard to listen to music. Sound quality was my priority above all the other functions. I like the buttons on the M3's over the swiping function of the XM4's and Bose 700.
      It did take about 25 minutes to complete the firmware update on the M3's but I have not experienced and issues with them. I am also using the XM3's connected to my Windows PC via Bluetooth and they are working great so I don't disturb my wife of 34 years, happy wife happy life.
      Sound quality is very subjective to each person, but I would say the I preferred the sound quality of the Apple Airpods Max ($549), B&O H95 ($800), and Sennheiser M3's ($400) over the Sony XM4's and Bose 700. If possible I would visit a B&O dealer if possible and give the H95's a listen.

    Do you think that this in type C mode competes with other closebacks sound quality wise? I don’t mind going wired for Noise canceling.

    You mention the USB C wired, but how are they with the 3.5mm jack? I want to be able to use these on my PS5, PC, edrums, etc, with the 3.5mm jack (not USB C). Do the EQ setting stay on the headset when using it for wired 3.5mm jack? The Jabra 85h do, but the Sony Xm4 dont, which sound like crap when wired up, just muddy base. Think I would like these more than the Jabra 85h? My #1 requirements are neutral sound quality (and sound stage is nice) and ANC is an important bonus for working from home in a noisy home. Thanks!

  • @helgeschneider4417
    @helgeschneider4417 ปีที่แล้ว

    Something I have noticed after about a month is, that when unplugging the USB C cable from the phone, it will completely brick my phone for about 30 seconds. Though interestingly this only happens when the screen is turned off. This will also permanently screw up the phone's performance until I reboot it. Apart from that they have been great.

  • @freedom9041
    @freedom9041 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I haven't experienced any software issues you mentioned. So not sure what's going on in your case. Try doing a factory reset. I am perfectly happy with mine. I returned my AirPods Max as these sound way better than AirPods Max.
    Also, I love Momentum TW2 to the bottom of my heart. I love their soundstage so much that I ended up getting their anniversary edition which is black.... every night before sleeping I use MTW2 and just pure listening pleasure. I keep the EQ flat, and have high-end sound tuning turned on for exceptional audio reproduction.
    For serious listening, I use IE 800 S and HD 820 paired with HDVD820 balanced connection and also with Pioneer SC-09TX. For movies and other occasional listening Momentum 3 wireless and TW2 when I am outside, commuting or in bed before sleeping.

      Would you confirm on what DMS is saying about the MTW 2 and the M3? Do they really have similar sound or does the M3 have much more to offer? I'm tempted to buy the M3 but if their sound isn't that much better than my MTW 2 then it's not worth.

    Wasent an iPhone by chance was it, the bt on my iPhones does strange thing to multi connect, worst I’ve had is the Bose 700, so bad I gave up. So USBC connected and wireless, purely on sound do these in your experience come close to the Drop Pandas. I do like the Momentum 2 buds but prefer my Technics AZ70’s, just personal taste.

    Had them before my AirPods and I liked them. They are ugly but has an OK build. Sounds great. Packs up neatly. Ease of use is terrible though, as is ANC and transparency mode. Software in general kinda sucks. They are cheap now however so I still think they're a good buy.

    It is way more attractive than most wireless ANC headphones including the Apple headphone. It looks like it can survive the regular knocks and bumps devices like that are subjected to in normal use. Strange to have software bugs on such a simple bit of tech. I wonder if you can set it to vibrate with the bass on your music.

    Wired active noise cancelling, huh? All my wired headphones have active noise cancelling. (*turns up the volume*)
    But jokes aside it would be interesting to look at this as a dual-purpose product. Comparing its sound quality wired to other wired headphones with and without ANC (can it do wired no-ANC?) while having the added perk of being able to go wireless plus ANC by just unplucking the cable. The added versatility might be a powerful but overlooked selling point if it sounds good relative to other wired headphones at the same price range.
