    I am very confused by this review, because you seem to know what you are talking about in general, but it is like you have a different set of Momentum 3 than the rest of us. These sound better than pretty much every wireless headset I have tested (I haven't tried the Pandas, but those are also more money, less features, and if the M3 are 2nd best that ain't bad). The M3 sound deep, warm, wide, detailed, etc. They are one of the only pairs that have been able to give me a balanced, natural-leaning sound (after lowering bass in EQ) while also still giving me that goosebumps feeling in my music. As others have said, I'm wondering if you accidentally did your sound tests while ANC was enabled? Otherwise I just don't understand how you can say these headphones don't sound good, especially compared to the competition. In terms of being for "audiophile" types (which you say they are not), they are also one of the only ones in their class that not only allow 3.5mm jack connection, but also USB-C, and moreso the EQ settings actually save into the internal DSP and can be used while plugged in with 3.5mm jack, AND you can even power them off when using them wired to completely bypass the DSP and get a more flat, neutral sound. Curious if you tested or knew that. Compared to the XM3/4, which you can't even use them with 3.5mm jack because they are stuck in their overblown, muddy bass settings. I'm also confused how you can say the XM4 have less of a nasty V shape than these out of the box... that is literally not the case. The Xm4 are borderline unusable out of the box. Also just wondering if you got a bad pair or something, because your review honestly doesn't make sense or jive with what the vast majority of the audio/headphones community has experienced with these. Curious, outside of the Pandas, what do you think sounds better? CERTAINLY not the XM3/4 or anything else in the price range. Only thing I can think of is if you want a TRUE natural sound, you could get the much cheaper ATH-SR50BT, but as a general headphone they don't compare at all with the M3.

      I have both just purchased the M3’s and also have AirPod Max’s. Listening critically I find the M3’s to have a less clinical sound - more lifelike than the APM. Do you find the M3’s benefit from reducing the bass (in the app) by -3decibels or more? I’m going to sell the APM (love the ANC and transparency mode) but sonically the M3’s are better and think. I also want to use the M3’s for mixing audio from nature sound field recordings in my studio. I know they aren’t a reference set of headphones but if I use USB C connection and turn off the noise cancelling etc could they work

      @@scott2724 I lower the M3 down to as much as -5 or even -6db on the low for more detailed listening. Sometimes I bump it up for certain fun songs. I keep mids at 0 and sometimes bring the treble down a db or so to attempt to make them more neutral. They sound great, and the sound stage is insane for closed back. I wish the ANC was a little bit better. I ended up picking up a pair of HD 560S and they are so clinically detailed and amazing for $200 that I can't recommend them enough if you want neutral, detailed sound, especially for your audio mixing work. The M3 still sound great, though, and compared to lower end wireless headphones they are killer, and do sound good with direct connection and EQ, just not as clear as the 560S.

    These recently got a 'High end sound tuning' option with the Smart Control app update, and it basically undoes the V-shape. With a simple toggle switch they now sound *a lot* more neutral than they do by default.

      The Sony XM4 are basically unusable out of the box without an EQ, unless you just want thumpy bass for rap/edm/etc. I really wanted to like them, and tested them with games, movies, and music, and without an EQ I couldn't even watch a movie or play a game. In Cyberpunk all sounds were replaced with a droning hum of the background of the city, and in movies the male voices were so bassy that you couldn't even hear the music or other sound effects in the scene. Terrible. Really makes me wonder how Josh thinks the XM4 sound better out of the box, when anyone who is even a marginal audiophile thinks the XM4 are borderline unusable out of the box.

      @@jeffdesharnais9668 I completely agree. I tried eq’ing mine to make them less of a disaster, but the treble became wayy too harsh. And yeah it was very surprising to see josh prefer the XM4s when they have the typical bass boosted consumer sound most audiophiles dislike. If all you care about is noise cancelling sure they’re good, otherwise, there are much better options for sonic fidelity.

    I'm also confused as to the assessment of these headphones. I understand that Joshua might have a lot of experience looking at higher end headphones and it might make it harder to go back and test headphones that are not intended for that high of an audiophile range, but it seems to me that the detail, separation and response of these headphones are better than what he stated, at least based on how he compares them to other offerings. When the bass is eq'd down it really makes a difference in the tuning of these headphones, and I would have liked to hear him talk about this setting particularly. I noticed he was plugging in the jack to them, and they really sound terrible through this connection since it seems it's not enough to really power the headphone's drivers. If anything, they're much more detailed than the XM4 which I have also tried, and I have also tested the pandas and certainly have a better midrange as he states but with the eq and especially when wired, they are much more competitive compared to them when comparing detail and dynamics.
    I think that the biggest question is if he tried them through USB-C since they do sound much more detailed and it really makes for a much more enjoyable listening experience. Yes, wiring wireless headphones is a self-defeating method but it is certainly worth mentioning when discussing sound quality. Just some thoughts, hope you see this Joshua!

      @cronus33 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      100% agree on the detail, separation, and response when EQd to lower the bass. Best sounding wireless set on the market, IMO. Also, the soundstage blows the rest out of the water... compares with many of the open backs I've used.

    • @edwinramos4910
      @edwinramos4910 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I agree. His reviews usually line up fairly well with my impressions of headphones, but I completely disagree with much of what he had to say about the Momentum 3, especially in how they compare to the XM4's and Bose 700's.
      The XM4 is good and in the same ballpark as the Momentum, once you fiddle with the EQ. It has decent drivers. But, it isn't more detailed and doesn't have better imaging or soundstage than the Momentum 3.
      The Bose 700 sound is inferior to both the Momentum 3 and the XM4. Yes, out of the box it is better balanced...not as V shaped. But, that's about the only good thing I have to say about it. I bought a pair at launch, and returned them 5 days later. To me, they sounded artificial and lifeless. They also lacked detail. You can tell that Bose uses garbage drivers and then use software trickery to make them sound somewhat decent. That being said, they do have great noise canceling and the best microphones on any Bluetooth headphone.

    • @iu1191
      @iu1191 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I really agree with William and Edwin. I do not know what Joshua was listening to. Did he have a defective pair of headphones? I know that Momentum 3 is not a perfect headphone. I have the HD650 and know what they sound like from a reasonable source, and the Momentum 3 is not that. It is unfair to compare headphones to something they were never supposed to be, nor are they trying to be. These are not wired headphones. They are not non-ANC headphones. They are Bluetooth wireless ANC headphones. Additionally, the detail retrieval is better than the Bose 700 on many levels, and the enjoyability of the music is significantly better. This is not just my opinion but the opinion of many reviewers. I did not wait for them before I got my pair - I had the Momentum 2 and got the Momentum 3 because I knew what the version 2 had sounded like. I was and remain impressed. All the limitation of the ANC and the battery life are built-in and obvious, but the sound quality is why to get these headphones - not a reason to avoid them. If what a person wants is Bluetooth headphone without ANC - I think there may be more cost-effective options, but for ANC headphones, you would be hard pushed to get better sound quality to my ears. More than that, they are objectively good sounding. Having listened to Joshua's review, a person may come away feeling that this is not the case. They sound good. And some might call them great - I find myself in that camp. Remember, I have good wired headphones and still feel that way. My ears, my opinion, but it is shared with many.

  • @sarmehdi

    Gotta disagree on the sound profile, mate. The bass is powerful but nowhere as muddy here as in the XM4, and can be easily adjusted by the EQ app. Overall sound profile is authoritative, and I found these to be very much at par with the much-beloved-by-audiophiles HD58X. While the 58X is open-backed and therefore naturally sounds a bit, well, open and a bit less bass-heavy, I find the sound signature on both to be pretty close. But yes, the 350 bucks does seem to be on the higher side, even though these are infinitely better built than the XM3/4s. $300 is about ideal for these, and that's what I got 'em for around Black Friday.

      A little update, since I'm using the headphones with a MacBook Pro mainly.
      I've experienced somewhat increased latency, for regular music listening it was irrelevant but noticeable and annoying when watching videos, so I've started investigating and apparently sometimes macOS (Big Sur 11.1 in my case) defaults to SCO or SBC codecs - instead of AAC - and the audio quality seems to suffer.
      Since forcing the audio codec to AAC, the sound quality seems better and the latency improved. I believe this applies to most bluetooth headphones.

      It's my understanding that those numbers for bass amount and treble amount on rtings are an overall average.
      If you look at the frequency response graph, almost all of the sub and midbass is 5db above the line.
      The treble starts to rise at 7khz. And reaches a maximum of about 7db above the the line.

    It's very weird to hear this, and as I've got both these and the Pandas, and the two are very close to each other in the way that they are both very much clearer than the XM4 - 700 counterparts, which I also happen to own
    Between the M3 and Panda, while the Panda ends up producing slightly more detail and clarity and also having more of a flat sound, the M3 has a wider soundstage and more punch in the bass department, however I wouldn't call it bleedlike or muddy in any way so I'll have to disagree with you there

    Ughh... I often watch your reviews and generally like them, but this time no, I think you not only fell short in reviewing the Momentum, but absolutely missed the mark placing the Sonys and Boses ahead, nah not fair. Nothing is more bass headed as the XM4 and, Bose could not be more artificial. That said, we're talking about Bluetooth for street walking or airplane dozing with noise canceling, so the boxy bass of the Sonys is OK and likely people will not care or be able to tell the difference, and when they can, maybe prefer to go for Sony or Bose because they they are mainstream, just look at reviews in Amazon. Now, plug the Momentum wire to a Hifimen Sparrow or THX Onyx with zero noise canceling and sure, not going to be the HD6XX, but I would hope you could not hold either that the XM4 or the 700 are better! =)

  • @MiloTheFirst1
    @MiloTheFirst1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Well that's strange. Usually i tend to agree with your appreciation Josh but i perceive theses phones quite a bit different. I bought mine a year ago, at the time the competition at the store where the sony xm3 and the bose that came before the 700, back then i tried them all and considered the momentum 3 had them both beat on instrument separation and resolution. That been said I agree the default bass response is over blown and muddy, even with the saturated bass i wouldn't call them V Shaped though, voices are still pushed forward over the treble, it just so happens that the bass veils them. Once they added the band equaliser i found that subtracting 1 on the low and adding 1 on the highs grants quite a bit of soundstage, I encourage you to give it a try if you still have them around. My biggest complain with them is that for me the headband creates a hotspot rather quick. So, i too am somewhat disappointed by them but even then i think they still have better technical performance than the sony and bose, don't know about the pandas. What i find rather interesting about these is that Sennheiser prioritised giving them aptx low latency over HD, which in turn makes me wonder if the default sound signature was tailored towards watching movies

    There must be some affect of difference in connections, build consistency or seal because the reviews for these are so mixed.
    I find it was the opposite where the detail, soundstage and imaging were better than XM4, superior to the NC700 which I found to be very 2D and low Res. The Momentum was not far off the 58X in an A B comparison.

Look I'm just a guy and I'm sure those companies have done market research, but I'm almost certain if sennheiser made a headphone that even got close to the HD 58X or 6XX, but closed back and with ANC, they would be a MASSIVE market threat. People think they like bloated bassy headphones because they've never heard better and mainstream wireless headphones just keep going with it.

    I received these as a Christmas gift. I already had the Sony XM4. I use both regularly. I likely wouldn't have pursued these on my own. I prefer wired headphones and actually have a few pairs of Sennheisers. I mainly use Bluetooth where convenience is the priority. One thing I absolutely despise on my Sony's is the touch controls because I unintentionally pause or change tracks. However, I've tried disabling the touch control but when connected to my laptop, I didn't like not being able to adjust my volume if I was a few feet away. The Sennheiser Momentum has some software quirks that are outright annoying. One is the active noise canceling. It will cycle to a lower setting if there's a period of inactivity, and then re-engage when media begins to play. The other issue occurs when connected to two devices simultaneously. I will use these connected to my tablet while on my treadmill. They are also connected to my phone, which is in my pocket. If I receive a push notification on my phone, the video playing on my tablet will pause and this can interrupt my workout. These two things are what I consider to be significant software problems. There needs to be an update so you can turn these features off for future use.

They sound ten times better than most Bluetooth headphones (including Sony's flagships) and can be had all day for $100-150 on eBay. Hey Joshua i’ve been waiting for this review from you for a while, and i’m glad it’s finally here. I’m wondering for how long did you let these headphones burn in? I have these headphones and i can say at first they were kinda unusable; after about 10 minutes it was too fatiguing to continue listening. The bass was super over-bloated and the highs were tingly. Regarding your comment: “out of the box this thing is just terribly V-shaped” and the other various similar comments throughout the video it seems accurate of the headphones before they’ve properly been burned in (for me like 30 hours). After that period they opened up quite a bit and have better resolution. Also for me i feel they are a vocal-forward headphone, rather than a V-shape. I just wanted to let you know so you can give them another chance for a more accurate assessment, that is, if you didn’t let them burn in. Anyway thanks and keep up the awesome work. The sharp metallic corner at the folding edge nearly took a chunk out of my left-hand index finger about 5 minutes ago. The metallic corner is sharp (just check it out for yourself when the left-head phone is folded by running the finger gently over the sharp corner bits) ---- and I'm sure that other unwary people may get pinched too on the finger in the same way. Really like my M3 Wireless and the M2 TWS and as per me the sound quality and soundstage beat the other consumer USD300-400 easily out of box. Using the 3 slider EQ can make them better. ANC is not that good but then I don't care. 😎

    We need to see an audiophile level wireless headphone that still has those feature sets. I feel that the market is too orientated towards bass, but if they pushed for a more flat soundstage and just made the sound quality better im sure it would drag people in. I have nothing wrong with bass, if its done right. But if it becomes too V shaped, you lose that immersion and miss out on the experience of feeling like your in the room with the artist

      I've just posted a comment on the Pandas under this video. They sound amazing, but at least I can't have them on my head for 2 hours straight because of the uncomfortable headband which is a shame.. Kinda sad, that a 400$ headphone can be that poorly designed.

    For anyone reading here regarding build quality of sennheiser momentum. I have the very first generation of sennheiser over-ear headphones and they have been everywhere... trains, flights... long office hours... stuffed in bags without its included case... still works super fine. Even the original cable it came with with in-line controles. Even the left/right height adjustment as it was the day i got them. I dropped them on hard floor several times... Still no cracks, no nothing.. Build quality is 10/10 with sennheiser momentum.

      It’s probably in steps like, first you heard the melody, with these the whole song, next up is noticing that guy 12 feet to the left from the microphone who is scratching his eyebrow.
      Edit: thats what my koss/massdrop esp95x’s do for me, and there are steps up from that.

      @@max-6035 yeah... but i still feel like if you are going to compare every car to a fucking ferrari then a new 2021 corolla is still a piece of shit in a review of this guy. It's ok comparing it to high end audio, but this is NOT a bad headphone as he is describing it here.

    Ah subjectivitiy is such a beautiful and strange thing. I've heard reviews that say these are better sounding then the competition, and you saying they are the worst.
    I guess it really all depends on the person.

    • @paulnelson3802
      @paulnelson3802 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. I have heard a few in shop:
      AIRPOD MAX ( found them not as great sounding ) this was last week.
      XM4s ( to my ears, muddy and just did nothing for me, friend agreed )
      NURAPHONES ( which a friend had at the gym ) I had a 10minute use while he used mine, now they rival the M3s in all honesty, in a different way, as you kind of have both worlds. Buds in your ear and over ear headphones together and they sounded awesome, but I just love the feeling of the bass with my M3s and the airy sound, but definitely worth having a listen to I would say, without a doubt.
      I still love my Momentum 3s the most. I have had them a year now and if I thought anything sounded better, I would give my honest opinion and say so. As stated above ( to my ears ) the NURAPHONES were the only ones on par with the M3s, for sound purely ( all the others were better for noise cancellation) but the M3s do a fairly decent enough job for me. Only time I notice the noice cancellation more so, I when the music stops playing or u play your music low and the gyms playing the music loud.
      Sorry about the waffling but hope this helps anyone comparing or thinking of purchasing headphones.

    My momentum 2 AEBT were fantastically built and handsome. I liked the features and sound quality. I couldn't wear them for long though due to the hot, small, closed earcups and the criminally under padded headband.

    Codec! Codec! Codec! What did we expect? Hi Resolution? I mean with this pair of Headphones the most we could get is CD quality even with aptX! The only time I can really notice a huge improvement is when I connect the device with the Macbook Pro to listen to Apple Music and the most I get is 32-bit 44.1khz. And that is when I enjoy wearing them for hearing instruments and sounds and at times being in that moment in the Studios. Now I need an upgrade! But it has to be through bluetooth V5 and there are not that many around these days. Apple AirPod Max? I am using an Android Galaxy S10 Plus. Then there is the Sony WH-1000XM4. What else? Could we come up with a better an alterntive for Bluetooth lovers instead please… Happy New Year 2022 Everyone, and Very Sexy!

    A pair of cans for under $100 are the win. Even under $50. Can get decent sound and ANC. You're not getting headphones that are so much better to justify the high prices. I've bought budget and high end so that's just how I feel about it.

    One of the stills shows them plugged in with the 3.5mm audio cable. This might explain why you disliked their sound (for the price). Did you plug them into an amp when using them like that? If not, you definitely should have, the impedance is a bit too high to achieve full quality straight from the audio source.

    I'm daily using Audeze LCD-X and have for portable use Sony 1000xm3 and Koss Porta Pro and sometimes I use HD600 (had also HD660S)... and now just bought Momentum 3 - for me Momentums 3 are crushing Sony in bass and treble quality and scene and imaging... Now I can listen music and don't feel that I'm loosing a lot. I use EQ - -5dB on Bass + 4dB Mids and -2dB on Highs. (eq on those was quite great - not destroying sound) On sony's eq is not sufficient to make them good - You loose muddy bass but then there is no detail on bass and highs... and You are left with midrange. As I love great vocals - not detailed claustrophobic highs and boomy bass on SONY is just too much. Midrange is also great on Momentum 3 but not as forward as on Sony's and LCD-X. Considering You get detailed image of music I'm listening - I can live with a little recessed vocals. To be honest I would choose Momentum 3 over hd600 - for fun sound. I can recommend Momentum

    Really appreciate the time that you put into this video. Of note though, there are no knowledgeable audiophiles giving credence to Bose, Sony and especially not Apple with all of one “entry” of any note in the field. Drop panda is higher caliber. Really wish they had noise cancellation. But most audiophiles gravitate towards Bang and Olufsen, Bower and Wilkins, Shure, and if you’re on a budget, Sennheiser is great if you know your way around an EQ. Thank you and best of luck to your channel.
