Dell's SKUs are a little out of control these days. The Inspiron 5000 has configurations that are similar to the 7000 and there's a lot of cost overlap. Additionally Dell offers some AMD configurations on the 5000 line that we're reviewing here.
The unit I'm looking at today costs $799, the same price as the 7000 with an Intel i5 quad core Kaby Lake CPU and Nvidia GTX 1050 GPU. At that price the 7000 is the better computer.
But the AMD 5000 starts at $650 with the same RX 460 GPU and a slightly slower processor. That's not a bad price for what you're getting on the GPU side and worth considering.
That said the displays on both the 5000's and 7000's aren't that great this year. If you are really crunched for cash these will deliver performance at a good price, but spending a little more with a competing brand might get you a nicer display and possibly a faster GPU (such as as the Lenogo Y720 Legion : • Lenovo Legion Y520 Gam...

This laptop has INCREDIBLE ventillation. It cannot be overstated how great the fans and ventilation are on this laptop. I have the one with the nvidia gtx 1050 4gb version. The ventillation is so exceptional that i was able to overclock the gpu nearly 500mhz without overheating or losing stability. Msi afterburner is registering 1.92 ghz on the gpu which is just absurd considering its a laptop and you cant ussually OC them that high.

Yup, I'm an AMD fan. I was about to build up a Ryzen 1700 and RX 580 desktop this month. But the crypto-miners ate up all the GPUs on the market.
So I see this laptop here and how it performs and I have to say it needs to be around $500 for it's performance shown. The old architecture just isn't cutting it for anything but web-surfing and Netflix. You basically have to bump most games down to 900p to get 60 frames out of them. I don't believe a person could use this for Relive streaming or for rendering unless you have a lot of patience.
I wish Lon would start using Relive and Shadow play as a test in his reviews for laptops. Even OBS.
Just was about to say that. Asus actually showed off a laptop at Computex with an R7 1700 and RX 580. Should bring the processors up to speed (or even better) with the current Intel chips.

lon, GTA 5 and gaming benchmarks is actually using the built in iGPU in that game. its a known issue with switching graphics in windows 10.. its not just mixing up the memory values. RX460 would offer alot better performance ingame, those frame rates i can barely see in up side of screen are defiantly that of iGPU, i made a A10 build before and tested GTA 5 and got very similar FPS on slower DDR3 ram.. so a mobile APU with faster DDr4 could probably match it...
What would you guys do to make this laptop the best it could possibly be? I bought this on sale and I use it for music production no problems really but I'm curious to know how to make it better.

I personally like the red accents but not because I'm a corny 12 year old gamer lmao. Red and black are a personal favorite color combo of mine so this is pretty good looking in my opinion but I understand where you come from there's a lot of shoving these color accents down our throats and slapping "gaming" on it

Hey Lon, I think one test you might want to consider adding is using shaders in Minecraft. It would help break up the monotonous routine you go through in some of the reviews and show what a dedicated GPU can provide. I know the last time you tried using shaders it didn't work out, but for a while now Optifine has made installing shaders as simple as dropping a zip file into a specific folder.

Hey Lon, why did you use the integrated graphics for testing games on the laptop?, you know you have to set your application that you want to run on the dedicated graphics manually for every single game you whish to play or test on it using radeon additional settings, or else it will default to the integrated gpu.

I’m not sure if this is just mine, but I can’t get by 5-10 minutes on a game without this overheating.
ANYONE INTERESTED IN THESE: Today has been my first day with one, i went with a configuration that has an intel i7 and a 1050 NVIDIA, and ive been seeing great results so far. Video runs amazingly and everything works great, only problem im having is that idk if its just mine or the computer in general but the speaker is garbage. Will not listen to anything without headphones because everything as far as audio goes is so low quality its terrifying. If your looking for something good in performance, this is pretty good for this price point. I wrote this comment on mine :)
123Gio123 My laptop has the subwoofer installed and sounded great. Not sure what model you have but, I updated the OS and after the update, my sound was fucked up. Dont remember how I fixed it, but these laptops have pretty good sound, theres just something that fucks it up
get the 15 5667 better since it has an i7 turbo boosting always at 3.45ghz 16gb 2400mhz ram and 4gb on an amd chip i think it was the r7 m445 and 250gb ssd backlit and just faster maybe same performance on gpu tasks but on cpu it just kills it and this laptop doesnt look gamery and has a back lit and i got mine for 600$ and it was awesome
got the one with the rx 560 4gb instead... what's up with its drivers? I go to device manager and update but it says windows has encountered an error and disables the gpu
Not sure, most games on mine seem to run only on integrated graphics. I haven't found a way to make the games recognize my dedicated graphics yet.

How is it with compatibility for GNU/Linux? I don't care about games.
After several months with it, it's relatively awful. Go with similarly priced Acer with GT150 (mobile GT 1030) or like he says, invest a bit more to get the i5/GTX 1050 of the same computer. I regret the $150 dollars I saved, since nithing on laptops can be changed.
Can you start adding overwatch to your game test?
tbh I don't think its necessary for overwatch to be a test. it's not a very demanding game and even older cards like a 950, 960m can run it at high at decent framerates.

i am also having driver issue. in gta 5 witcher 3 and ghost recon wildlands i could hardly get 30 fps.... is there any way to solve this problem???? also i lost my real dvd driver.... i installed it from amd site and dell site too but still no changes.....

I'm on dell website checking this laptop, but it's not AMD at all, and I'm here thinking that this review was based on, 7th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-7300HQ Quad Core. Cause that's what the Inspiron 15 5000 Gaming, has on the Dell webpage.

I have the intel version of this but my gpu is the same. Mine has 16gb of ram but I only get like 30 fps on gta 5 and feel like my gpu is underperforming can anyone help?

Dell should only sell this version with a Linux distro using the latest Linux graphics components, which Ubuntu 17.04 does not have. Actually none of the stable ( or LTS ) major distros yet have the needed components. You still have to have some Linux skills to even get it set up. The good news is that certainly within a year from now, it will be far easier to get a good Linux distro working on this without, being a total computer nerd. But by then, Google will have a Fuchsia OS alpha available.
Is it good for roblox ?
It's a bit disappointing that AMD didn't seem to change much from their previous attempts on getting the market. Not to anger fans, but I personally had 2 separate experiences with AMD in the past... a desktop Athlon CPU very long time ago when CPUs where still of the slot load type, and my first laptop, an Acer Ferrari of the 4000 series... those are both over 10 years ago.
The price difference is great (not on this particular case, but overall), but complaints where pretty much the same. Driver issues, weird glitches, some games not running well or at all. It ends up with the same problem that made me go back to Intel and nVidia later on: eventually for gamers and heavy users, you end up in a scenario where a piece of software or game you really want to use don't work because of those issues. And then you keep waiting for updated drivers to fix it. It's just not a great position to be in.
Have you thought of benching overwatch
I looked into it - main reason why I haven't included it is because it's not available on Steam and will add a lot of time to my review process. I have a portable SSD I use for testing that makes it very easy for me to run games via Steam. Overwatch I believe would have to be downloaded every time.
I don't have Overwatch but the Battle.net application does have an "Already installed? Locate the game" function that might do the same thing that I think you're doing with Steam.

this laptop was such a disappointment for me. My old 7 years old samsung laptop was even working in the same speed with this. Returned this back after 2 days.
No one should buy an AMD FX or A10 based laptop when Ryzen laptops are just around the corner.

Could this play overwatch at medium 1080p 60fps?
I have this PC ($650 version) and it does Overwatch at 45-60fps on medium presets.

Yes at 100 percent. It performs similarily with World of Warships (same settings). Can also run Ghost Recon: Wildlands at low at 20-30ish fps (1080p...could not manage to drop it at 720p, which may make it better). Player Unknown Battleground is unplayable. I still have many game to test on it, but I do not use it much since I have a Desktop with i5 7400 and GTX 1060 6gb gpu. For someone wanting to play esports and is on a budget, the $650 version is very good (actually the only version to consider in my opinion). For AAA, it can only play some at lowest settings and it would be better to invest on a GTX 1050ti laptop (or better, if RX 470/RX 480 laptop exist as well as NVidia equivalent).

The CPU isn't that great, and as for mine, I can't seem to get the dedicated graphics to run for games, and it isn't working great for me when games do run on the dedicated. I am working with different drivers to hopefully make it work.
This review/computer is already outdated. On the dell website this Inspiron 15 5000 laptop have a GTX 1050 and i7-7700 HQ.

Lon.TV the model you mentioned in the video is the Inspiron 15 7000, which you reviewed, not the 5000. They have aesthetic differences.

Indeed, but both exist. The 5000 intel has the GTX 1050, while the 7000 has 1050ti (although it changes frequently since there were versions of the 7000 with GTX 1050 not long ago). Like this AMD model (which I own), is sometimes available, sometimes not on the Dell website. BTW, check for sales (got mine for about $600).

Mine seems to have trouble using the dedicated graphics. The computer likes to run on the integrated graphics instead of my dedicated, and when I force games to run on dedicated they are extremely laggy. I am trying to work on a fix, hopefully I can find one.
Kyoto Now Yup exact same problem some games such as Doom 2016, Dishonored, Mirrors Edge, and Batman Arkham City run perfectly maxed out because it's using the RX 560 but other games like Insurgency, Depth, and Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag run terribly because it refuses to use the dedicated graphics card. It's pretty frustrating and having this laptop for 4+ months now and not knowing how to use it to its full potential is very very annoying. If I ever find out a fix I'll post it right here, hopefully you will be kind enough to do the same?
Yeah, I actually stumbled upon this video because I've been messing around with it to work properly. I also noticed that when I force the computer to run games off of my dedicated graphics card (by disabling the integrated graphics in the Device Manager) games run horribly as well. I guess there is some way to configure the graphics card so that it actually works as well. I heard but haven't tried it yet, but apparently something called triple cache is a culprit, and someone told me I should do the opposite of whatever it comes default with. But that is the just heresay, and I have no way to validate whether or not this works since I haven't tried it yet. But I'll keep you posted on how it goes. I recently updated my BIOS, and tried to update graphics drivers, which I think I did right. Hopefully this will make some kind of difference.
AMD is yet to shine in the gaming laptop market. This architecture is pretty old and doesn't stack up well with Intel/NVidia laptops. Even my 2 year old laptop at the same price point scores double the results of this one. The hardware of AMD laptops is just showing its age.
Agree - Nvidia is much friendlier on the software / driver front especially for gamers coming over from consoles.

AMD is so shit right now, wait for ryzen. Nobody who is informed about the market would choose an AMD based laptop unless it was dirt cheap.
FX/A# series are so much slower and suck way more power vs intel, and AMD graphics are equally bad - nearly 2 generations behind nvidia in performance/watt. If there are similarly priced intel + GTX 1050 laptops available then people should buy those, it would be an upgrade in every possible way.
well in his gaming benchmarks the RX460 wasn't being utilized because of windows 10 graphic switching bugs. so given that its using integrated graphics... that is still impressive.... i knwo this because i once way long ago made a A10 APU desktop build and got similar fps in gta 5 with similar settings.. and RX460 would double that..
but ya AMD needs to drop Ryzen APU with Vega iGPUs asap..
Benchmarks were using the discrete GPU. Only GTA V exhibited the issue.
