  • In this video, I will have a deeper look at the Dell Inspiron 15 Gaming. First I will upgrade the memory from 16GB to 32GB and add an additional SSD, followed by some benchmarks and performance checks in real games like Microsoft Flight Simulator and GTA V.
    Let's see how this laptop is doing in terms of performance and thermal throttling.

    You should try repasting the CPU and GPU.
    I have a similar spec Dell Inspiron 5000 Gaming and it helped with performance after my laptop started overheating and shutting down.

      That's a good idea. Don't have the laptop anymore and I do believe it could make a difference but I don't think it will completely resolve the issues to my idea.

      @@jensdbe Well there is a third party fan control software also. If I remember right, it’s called Dell Fan Control.
      My Dell Inspiron Gaming 5000 (5577) did not have thermal issues, but it also has a third side vent which the 7000 does not have… which means better cooling.
      I still ran the fan control, undervolted the CPU (another suggestion you could try on a future laptop), and removed Intel Dynamic Platform & Thermal Framework (since it actually does a bad job of managing fans and CPU performance). With those tweaks, I was able to run Prime95 and Heaven Benchmark all at once for over 2 hours without thermal throttling.

    Thank you for an excellent and clear video on the Dell upgrade. My son gave me the Dell 15 Inspiron gaming to stream a football game (2 hours), after about 60 minutes the play froze, I got it working again by clicking replay (OBS) and then back to the game, after a few minutes the laptop stopped dead, Pop! We had to reboot and it managed to finish the game. Input from cameras was 50 FPS and output was 25. My question is, will the ram upgrade to 32 alleviate this problem, or are there other worries involved with this laptop for streaming? Should I consider getting a new laptop?

    • @jensdbe
      @jensdbe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like a different issue. You can monitor the RAM usage if you suspect that. Also you might check the logs of OBS (don't know that tool very well). Maybe a stresstest with a benchmarking toold could rule-out the software part as well.

      Thanks for your reply. I will try to review the OBS log (I thing I’ve never done before), but I like this laptop, so I might proceed with the ram upgrade. Thanks again for your prompt response. V

    Hi! good video. I would like to ask you something. I already have 5 years with the same model but with HDD. For work reasons and because it was my only computer, I was only able to maintain it once, the fact is that the fans and the hard drive have already started to fail, I don't know if it's a good idea to invest approximately 120 dollars in them or buy another laptop, What do you recommend me? Do you think it will last at least 2 more years?

    • @jensdbe
      @jensdbe  ปีที่แล้ว

      If everything else works fine, it would be a shame to get rid of the device. You can buy a fairly proper SSD of 256GB for under €50. That would be my option.

    Thanks for a nice review. Im about to buy this laptop for my wife. I also have a HP omen 17 with exact same confoguration. 1st question: Can i swap the rams in them since they seem to use same. question 2: are you still happy with its performance? Question 3: where can i order 16gb ram for my laptop? Thanks again this was helpful.

    • @jensdbe

      The RAM is just standard DDR4 sodimm, so should work. I'm not happy with the performance though as the laptop is only performing as expected for 5-10 min and then throttles everything doen due to heat issues

    I am the owner of Inspiron 7577 (i7 7700hq, 1050ti) and also have very very high temperatures of CPU in heavy loads (95-100 C). Cooling pad (Crown CMLS K330) and CPU downvolting in Throttlestop fixed the issue (downgrade bios to 1.9.3, set in ts -130 mV core & cache, -125 mV igpu & iGPU unslice, PL1 50 W) dramatically reducing the temperatures. To be precise:

    • @jensdbe
      @jensdbe  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have the laptop anymore but it's a shame that all of these workaround that could potentially brick the laptop are needed. There clearly are issues with the thermal design or CPU/GPU selection.

    • @marlanivanovich1828
      @marlanivanovich1828 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Markimullaler In short: i think the chances are great! But I can't guarantee that it would work for all RAM brands and microchip types. I can assure that it works for Patriot 32Gb DDR4 CL15.
      In details:
      I also thought so (that it won't work), but as I can say - it's already a year since I've installed additional 32Gb and it works excellent! An important point: both the current chipset and the processor support 64gb of RAM. That is why I decided to have an experiment. I've been using it as a ram disk for virtual machines and an additional space for services inside Windows Subsytem for Linux. And I have to say: since 15 hours of work Win OS doesn't even fill to full available RAM extent.

    I have a Dell Inpiron 7559 gaming laptop with a 1 TB hard drive. Will this model support a MVME m.2 ssd drive, or do I have to use a sata ssd? Most of what I've found online seems to suggest I can only use a sata. And I'm to the understanding that with this particular Dell that Samsung's migration software is the only software that will successfully transfer everything from a standard hard drive to a ssd. Do you know if this is the case? Thanks.

    • @jensdbe
      @jensdbe  ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as I see (only did a quick look) that laptop has an M.2 slot but it only supports SATA, not NVMe. I think the easiest option would be to use a 2.5" SATA SSD as performance won't be much better and M.2 SATA SSDs are harder to find. As for data migration. Personally I would go for backup + fresh install on the new drive.

    Thank you for this informative video! I have Inspiron 15 7577 and it has a PCIe Gen 3.0 (8.0 GT/s) motherboard. Can I upgrade from Samsung pm961 pcie m.2 nvme 256gb to a PCIe nvme Gen3 x4 SSD? Will there be an improvement? Thanks again!

    • @marlanivanovich1828
      @marlanivanovich1828 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Important note: at least core i7 7700hq has direct separate 16 lanes for graphical system (pci-e 3.0 x16), chipset (PCH) has sharable pci-express lanes (nvme ssd / wi-fi / ethernet). Which interface does Samsung pm961 use? You will see the actual improvement if a real read/write speed of (nvme pcie 3.0 x4) ssd is better. Real data you can get from CrystalDiskMark tests on the same platform (the same cpu / chipset) which are being published quite often by the bloggers on yt.
      UPDATE: I've edited the message because the first one was actually wrong: CPU i7 7700hq has NO separate pci-e lanes for M2 as compared with modern ryzen cpus. M2 is Pci-e 3.0 x4, connected to chipset (PCH). There are more user-friendly details on linustechtips. It's a shame that Dell hasn't provided a useful diagram with all interconnected components on its motherboard.

    • @ABetterMeee
      @ABetterMeee ปีที่แล้ว

      @Marlan Ivanovich Thank you for your input. According to CPUID CPU-Z the motherboard is Dell 0VPTXG A01 PCI-Express 3.0 (8.0 GT/s) with Intel HM175 chipset, but there is no x4 before or after. According to Intel site and HWiNFO64 Intel HM 175 (Skylake PCH-H) with motherboard slots of 1xPCI, 3xPCI Express x1, 2xPCI Express x4, 1xPCI Express x16, so I'm wondering if it actually supports m.2 2280 NVME ssd x4 full performance or if the PM961 is just reverse compatible, meaning if one of the 2 pcie x4s is for the m.2, because if it is then I'm going to replace the PM961 with something better. Long story short, I know it is there are various types of PCIe/NVMe, like 3.0 x2 and 3.0 x4, so I am not sure which one of them will be the right fit for my laptop. Thanks again!

      @@ABetterMeee E.g. I use WD SN550 512 Gb PCI-e 3.0 x4.0 on this laptop, the real performance is not so brilliant as someone could think: 2GB/s for a few gigabytes in the beginning of transfer, then the speed is approx. 400 MB/s. But I knew about that and agreed with it for that price (approx. 6500 rubles). Right now I've successfully installed 48 Gb of RAM and have plans to use even 64Gb. All of that to use RAM disk which has astonishing read/write speeds (32kb sequentional as Crystal Disk Mark states): 5900 MB/s reading, 10 000 MB/s writing. All the data can be synchronized with storage (written back to, be it SSD or HDD) just before switching the laptop off manually or with some utilities like Imdisk tools. But I'm surprised with 60-70 (C) temperatures under active workload with active dual channel memory )
