The $500 version I am looking at (it can be found between $500 and $550) has an i5-7200U Kaby Lake CPU, 8 GB of RAM, a 1 TB hard drive and a Nvidia 940MX GPU. The RAM and storage can be upgraded and there's a slot for an M2 SATA drive.
The GPU is one we've seen on a few other computers, namely the awesome Mi Air 13 I looked at late last year:

The Acer delivers similar performance here with the E 15. It's enough to run most current games at low settings although you might have to drop into 720P on a few of them to get a playable framerate. Still it's better than having no GPU at all.
The display leaves much to be desired unfortunately. It's a low quality TN display that's pretty washed out.
But for $500 this is so far the lowest cost gaming capable laptop we've seen this year.

Well, Lon I would say this is a great laptop for people who are trying to make a channel because with i5 and a gpu you can play games and record and have 60fps.

Bought this same model a few weeks back, well worth the money. Needed it for school, light gaming, and DJing, My Desktop is my go to for gaming, but cant go wrong with this laptop. played Dead Rising 1 at 1080 60 frames and a few other older favorite games. Honestly older games are where its at and if this can run em I'm all for it. Had to take it to Acer's repair center though, came with a faulty battery. Would only hold a charge of 2 of the 8 hours it promised off of Neweggs specifications.

You should test Overwatch on your reviews. A lot of people I've talked to when they ask me about recommendations for getting a computer tend to ask if they can play Overwatch.

Tim Stuart I have this exact laptop and I can say that it can run overwatch at 60-70 fps 1080 low no alias since the screen is so small you can hardly see a difference

Watched another TH-camr test overwatch on this laptop and the game set the scaling to be 79%. They were getting an average of 60-70 fps like you, could you check to see if you're running at full 1080p (100% scaling) and not 1080p with reduce scaling?

Usually when you see things like the physics tests improve with a dedicated GPU, It is often due to target power levels. For many of the lower powered CPUs, and when the laptop maker is targeting a certain battery life, what they will sometimes do is in the bios they will set a CPU power limit (Long duration) option to a lower wattage, and the short duration to the max TDP of the CPU, thus if you perform any extended test, you will notice the clock speeds drop after a little while regardless of the CPU temperature. The short duration allows for the turbo boost to work for a short while, but it does not allow for sustained high performance when they do this. The main issue with this, is that the power limit is for the entire CPU package, thus the CPU core, memory controller, GPU, and the uncore components. While harder to come buy, sometimes you will get lucky and someone will release a hacked bios that will provide access to those additional settings, and allowing for better sustained performance.
You can check into this by using a program like AIDA64
For the U series CPUs, they often have a lower power limit, but intel allows the the mother vendor to specify a higher TDP.
While a bit risky, there are some more shady applications that do allow you to edit some of the memory values at a very low level for the UEFI (requires you to disable secure boot), and you can typically disable power limit and allow the CPU to use up to the TDP set by intel, though the mods must be applied each time the system is rebooted since the changes only stay in RAM, but the shady part is you have no idea what else it may be doing. If the laptop becomes popular, someone may do a bios/ UEFI mod that will allow people to just disable the throttling and go to the standard intel method of a power limit of the max TDP of the chip, and a throttle point at around 90C.
I am adding the more detailed info as a reply since sometimes when I post a link, the post goes into moderation and no one but me can see it. 10:20 The Physics score is affected because the processor doesn't have to do all the work, driving the graphics at the same time as the CPU intensive things. The dedicated GPU is just letting the CPU breath a bit more and lets it go a bit further.
Hey does anyone know how to fix this laptop? mine shuts off occasionally even when the battery is at full charge, laptop is brand new as well. Any suggestions?
Is the M.2 slot in this machine compatible with the PCI-Express/NVMe standard or is it just SATA 3? If the latter, then any drive you put in there is not going to perform any better than a standard 2.5-inch SATA SSD.

i have the gtx 950m with 8GB and a SSD M.2 and it runs perfectly
i got this laptop a year ago. The wifi driver does not work well. I will not stay connected to the wifi no matter how good it is. I looked online and it still has not been fixed. I have to connect an ethernet cable just to have a connection that will last at least an hur
I use the version with the 950m card. Laptop is pretty good, be warned you will have to update a lot of drivers out of the box.
Really good video! Recently my HP 250 G4 (the Celeron version) has been having problem and I've been considering upgrading. I run a small youtube channel focusing on sports and gaming so I need something that can edit videos well. Nothing crazy, just something that can give me a solod editing experience. My HP 250 G4 is very slow at loading footage while editing, especially gaming footage, which made me switch off the video feed while editing. Do you think this would be a solid choice for what I'm looking for? I'm not looking to spend more than 500 bucks.

I wish you reviewed the updated version of this laptop. I bought mines with a 256gb ssd (huge difference) which does have an optical drive and the same 940mx with the i-5 7200u professor for the same $500.

Try take a look on the F5 model...It has the same specs but comes with ssd, hdd and also an optical drive...the build quality is quite nice
Lon.TV you said you might be able to put in an optical drive if you were really determined. I am curious if the motherboard still has a SATA header for an optical drive. It could be an easy way to add an additional 2.5" drive.

Is the low cost Acer or the low cost Dell laptop's LCD screen better, or maybe I should ask which brand has the best screen? I am considering upgrading my Lenovo G580 (15.6", 1366 x 768, i3-3120M CPU, 4 GB DDR3 RAM) that I bought on Lenovo's refurbished deals site for $350 several years ago with a new laptop that's about the same price as I paid last time. I do want to upgrade to a 15.6" with a 1920 x 1080 screen this time. I might end up having to pay a little more.

Diwa Likha Laya de los Reyes I started Revit a week ago and trust me. Revit eats up your hardware. Get a better processor and at least 8 gigs of ram.
Good advice, however getting a better processor would eat up my budget to levels that would stop me dead in my tracks in short I can't buy. However I did come across another laptop I can afford which has an AMD processor AMD A9-9400 with the R5 graphics. Would that be enough?
Diwa Likha Laya de los Reyes I see you are on a tight budget no worries. Is that processor a quad core? Autocad rarely use the graphics side unless you are rendering. You should be fine. Some of my classmate have an i5 and they can still run autocad. Make sure your ram is at least 8 gigs.
Well yes the A9-9400's processors are quad already, however I re-checked the specs and found out the max RAMM is only 8GB. It's a good enough memory but currently working for a BIM company 8GB is like depressing enough already that 12 GB is the current acceptable level. I will take heed of your advice here see. I will check out for other processors with at least i5 for intel and A10's for AMD or their FX models which I know are all quad and a laptop with a max ramm of 16GB. For now I will go for desktops and purchase those DDR3's 128bit 4GB memory I saw a while back and suck up trying to pretend I can carry it anyway I want. Thanks for the advice, I have already bought 4 laptops, regretted 3 of them because 3 of them came with depressing integrated's and the better model I bought was an HP with a VC but broke down barely a year that's why I will never buy HP.

The dual channel configuration should work best with a matching stick of memory. At that point I'd be more concerned about total RAM capacity rather than the dual channel configuration, as it's not that big of a difference when you've got a dedicated GPU.
About the m.2 memory slot - I would make sure to ask before buying, because there are older generations of this laptop (with older generation i5 processors) and I'm not sure if those would offer the m.2 slot.
As for running Windows 8.1 it should have no problem running it, Acer has to offer drivers for 8.1. I presume you'll have to get a windows licence for it though. If you're concerned about the spyware situation I'd suggest you look into how to disable it. Windows 8.1 also is affected by it through the newest updates from what I've heard.

If the games are more CPU intensive they won't run as well otherwise graphically it'll be about the same.

I agree, also the more budget friendly Asus Vivobook Mx x441sa (not for gaming)
But the X541uv is the counter part of the Acer E5, but most likely cheaper and have more accessories than the acer's and also good in gaming due to the fact it is loaded with gtx920mx.

Arturo Chago probably not because the R5 is not as good as the 940mx you might be able to play VERY light games with it though

USA always gets the best price by far. In Canada, which is obviously super close to USA, the prices also go crazy high. The prices are much higher than just the discrepancy in dollar value (US's dollar is usually worth about 20%). Instead of prices that should only be 20-25% higher, Canadian prices for the same laptops are at least 50% higher, sometimes 60-80% higher, or close to double. No idea the reason. I guess just because they can.
