LOTS of comments saying "just get a pc lol it's faster" as the video has been suggested out to a much larger audience than usual. A few things: Firstly, an RTX 3060 desktop is only like 8% faster than a laptop for similar money: th-cam.com/video/S1sCLpkOkhY/w-d-xo.html Secondly, not everyone just sits at home, some people need portability, and even if the device is only used at home not everyone has space to maintain a dedicated area for a full on PC setup, or the money to have both a PC and cheaper laptop. I cant stress how important it is to clean your laptop. Take your time to learn how to slowly open to back of it to get the dust out. Then slowly again take your time to learn how to remove/replace fans and clean them. And again slowly learn how to change your thermal paste. It's not as hard as you think you just need the right tools to unscrew a few screws here and there.
When is the right time to change thermal paste? Like every several months or something?

I can confirm tip #10 works on desktop PCs as well, tho it usually is a bit trickier to pull off and requires more user interaction, but it's overall worth it
I agree, the performance gains justify the effort.
There is a faster way but you will need two people. If the desktop PC is elevated at a highest possible distance you can go by hand, and then turn it upside down, it can boost the speed up to 75.8%.
Next you'll want your friend to turn the monitor sideways while elevating it the same way like you did the PC, you should then see it gives you another 45% speed increase.
And that's how you can boost your download 123.8% faster by utilizing the power of gravity. It works guaranteed.

One thing i would of suggested to have for a gaming laptop no matter the environment is using a cooling pad as that would help out a little more on the temps for the system as well as elevating it upwards if the person is using a dedicated keyboard and mouse.
When someone is using a laptop in their home at all times it is best to keep it plugged in and also you're using a TUF laptop which isn't really one of the best quality type of gaming laptops.
@@EcksGamer that's what I said, most people keep it plugged in but allow it to charge to 100% which is not good for the battery. What's wrong with my laptop tho? I only mentioned my model as an example to where this option can be find. Also, for £500, the RTX 3050 does its job
@@dvgnu The thing is with laptops though is the performance because while it is plugged in you can use the system to its max performance while on battery mode you're sacrificing the performance for better battery life and if you boost the performance on battery you're killing on how long it would be on for.
For most people as mentioned if they are just using it in one place only there is no point to ever unplug the system as for most people they want their performance over what you're suggesting.
On some laptops cooling pad messes their whole airflow, it screwed my Legion 5 Pro over, so i switched to laptop stand and never got past 75 degrees

Compressed air is fine, VACCUM is not. That creates static electricity.
And he's talking about cleaning the fans etc, you don't need to remove the heatpipes for that in most laptops.
I cleaned 9 times with compressed air , great way to clean inside out your laptop. Air might be too cold even freeze the parts sometimes, don't worry tho, just keep the battery out all times

Jarrod's Tech, my new favorite channel...
Tweaking for performance is definitely worth it. Oddly in my case I tuned mine down on the Medion Deputy P10 as the Intel Core series will automatically overclock then the CPU is at 100% & this caused thernals to constantly run at 100 celcius; simply by reducing the max CPU to 99% in power management prevented the overclocking and kept thermals to 75-80 celcius which will greatly increase lifespan & made no noticeable difference to game performance.

Short upgrade tip
CPU: Upgrade ~ each 3 generations (like Coffee Lake -> Alder Lake)
GPU: Upgrade ~ each 2 generations (like 1060 -> 3060).
RAM: Anything ~3200+ MHz is fine 32GB total, your next step should be like +800 MHz (like 3200 -> 4000)
Its a rough estimate, since in case of GPU it could be reasonable to have 1060 -> 2070S upgrade as example because of RTX and nature of how GPU live recently.
But you can keep that in mind.

5:24 BEST ADVICE YOU COULD EVER HAD! thx JARROD! better than linus direct to the point.
Lol ikr, his advices makes things more complicated sometimes.
Optimization and tuning is key with gaming laptops. There really is so many little things you can do to improve performance like disabling steam overlay(CPU went from 95-88 degrees), making sure all the different power settings in windows are set to performance, grab a laptop cooler for better airflow, and last but not least overclock you’re GPU because now adays GPU temps are much much lower in gaming laptops.
I no joke went from 55-65 FPS in Horizon Zero Dawn with a consistent 96 degrees on my CPU to 85-100 FPS and a max CPU temp now of like 88 degrees. Lower temps means you’re boost clocks can be maintained better from what I’ve noticed
got a rtx 3060m and a ryzen 5600h, overclocking the gpu won't do much for me as the cpu seems to be the bottleneck most of the time lol.
How do I change max CPU temp?
You'll kill your laptop. They are not designed to work on such temperatures long.
@@nomars4827 laptops CPUs are a lot different than desktop ones. The Ryzen 7 5800h has a max operating temperature of 105 degrees. Thermal throttling will happen well before the CPU burns itself up and my CPU doesn’t throttle even at 95 degrees.
@@braukwood925 the problem is not in CPU itself, but in other components on MB which suffer from prolongued heat. Cheap and middle class gaming laptops provide insufficient cooling and not the best components, and engineering solutions
That last tip was so helpful! Thanks Jarrod my download speed is so much faster now on my laptop.
Side-note: buy an actual kit for taking your laptop apart. Get one with different screw sizes, a magnetic pad (for dropping screws on) and a wrist strap. Or buy all of these separately. Regardless, actually get proper tools to open up and upgrade your laptop before trying it.
I do actually keep my laptop plugged in regularly when I use it and have an extension cord I carry around with the plug when I need to be on the go. I’m also surprised I don’t make nearly as many of these mistakes given I’m new to having a gaming laptop - only been a few months now.
Do you recommend buying a gaming laptop?
@@em-156 I’m not an expert but they’re good if you want portablility
Can you tell me, does using laptop while charging, does it charge and discharge the battery, or directly run it on DC power from Brick??
@@lemonboy21 I’m not an expert but I *believe* it’s running directly from DC power, sort of like a desktop. Otherwise it wouldn’t make sense that my laptop’s performance is terrible on battery power but not when it’s plugged in.
It safe to keep the gaming laptop plugged in? I always keep mine plugged in too
#10 actually works because more airflow means more performance.
I wouldn't entirely recommend updating the BIOS on a laptop.
The reason is that laptop OEM's tend to discard support for the laptop in question after the first 6 months, so, even if there are major BIOS updates for a given chipset/platform on a desktop that could uplift performance, eliminate bugs and make the hw running better overall, you can frequently forget getting that for the laptop.
Additionally, even if the laptop OEM releases BIOS updates for the laptop you bought, updating the laptop BIOS is precarious at best.
There are no safety features in place to protect against a bad BIOS flash for example.
Take Acer for example. I have had good success with their laptops in general in terms of performance and cost... however, their BIOS support is lackluster to say the least.
I currently use a PH517-61 with desktop grade Ryzen 2700 (replacable) and Vega 56 (which was soldered to the motherboard).
The cooling in the machine is amazing (with ridiculously quiet fans as well), and the motherboard is a B450 one which has the ability to support Zen 2 and Zen 3 CPUs... but Acer stopped support for this unit 6 months after releasing it... meaning they also never released new crucial BIOS updates with relevant AGESA versions that would have fixed performance problems, solved bugs and patched various security issues that AMD published to date... and of course, this also prevented users of this machine like myself from upgrading the Ryzen 2700 to say Zen 3 (5900x or 5950x - the cooling in this unit can EASILY handle 105W TDP cpu... so installing these, and even running them in ECO modes would have been amazing and added to the overal lifespan of the laptop and of course, it would have improved efficiency too).
Plus, on the second occasion I tried updating the BIOS... it killed the laptop... basically the bios update failed and it turned my laptop into a massive/expensive paper weight.
This was eventually solved by replacing the machine, but it was a major oversight on behalf of Acer for not installing proper protections in place to allow the user to recover from a bad bios flash.
There are of course methods that would allow a person to re-install a BIOS update themselves, but it requires a proper BIOS chip reader for a laptop, and knowledge to push it through. Its doable, and can be done relatively fast (so I don't understand why it takes Acer IT service over a month to do it themselves).
Plus, some laptop units have ENCRYPTED BIOS-es... meaning that even if you try TOUCHING the thing (aka making say a backup of it with a bios chip reader for laptops), you could end up breaking it.
This is unacceptable as far as laptop standards are concerned.
That is the first time i heard acer had removable cpus on laptops, the second part about bad bios support crashed my hopes down.
@@cem_kaya
The PH517-61 was a desktop replacement machine, and it had decent upgrade capabilities... I managed to upgrade the storage to all high capacity SSD's and RAM to 64GB (though technically, the laptop could have 128GB too).
And as I said, the Ryzen 2700 was also a full desktop CPU and also replaceable, but because Acer never upgraded the BIOS, you couldn't slap a Zen 2 or Zen 3 CPU's into it (which was a shame).
I also had an old Acer laptop with IntelC2Duo and Nvidia 9600mGT which I bought back in late 2008 for £600 in London.
That laptop served me well for 9 years... and its CPU was also upgradable... even the GPU was removable (but newer mobile GPU's were prohibitively expensive)
So, Acer doing laptops with replaceable CPU parts is nothing new.
Laptops these days don't really have main removable hw. Storage and RAM are usually the main things that can be upgraded.
This is one of the reasons why when I buy a laptop, I make sure its quite powerful and will last me for 5 years.
I replaced the PH517-61 with a Lenovo Legion Pro 7 16ARX8H which has 7945 HX (16c/32th), RTX 4080 (12GB), 32GB RAM (upgraded to lower latency 64GB), and it originally came with paltry 512GB SSD which was upgraded with 2TB NVME SSD for OS and software and 4TB NVME SSD for storage (I spent about £2300 when I bought it and got it along with RAM and SSD's on discounts because it was black friday at the time - this was in November last year).
Can't say I regret it. I usually save up enough money to get a higher end range laptop every 5 years because I do my work on the go a lot (content creation, productivity and gaming).
Tried tip 10, instantly loaded the bar when I dropped the laptop off the nearest skyscraper! Saved about 10 seconds of loading, really worth it. Thanks Jarrod!
I literally helped a friend purchase a laptop a few days ago, he's completely new to PC gaming, this is the perfect vid for him. Thanks.

Make sure he's well aware of the 10th tip ;)
6:45, i know its a joke, but turning your laptop on its side does make it cooler because it is radiating heat more effectively. just dont go thinking it will get you 50% more FPS. At best maybe 5%, and this can backfire if one or more of the heatpipes are oriented in a way that means the wicking function of the copper sintering/microchannels has to work against gravity. IF you have a gaming laptop you're likely to have at least 1 heat pipe like this, on the better designed laptops that share heat pipes between CPU and GPU, you're almost guranteed that all of them will be fighting against gravity to get to at least one of the parts
Yeah it would help cooling for sure, but also a bit awkward unless you're lying down haha
For mistake #6 or at 3:10. You can actually just open the task manager and click the performance was it? Or maybe it was the resource monitor? Anyways, after you find it click on the MEMORY tab that should be located on the left side. And on the bottom there should be information of how many ram slots you have and how many you're using.
#6 is so true. I have a Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3 and it comes with an RTX 3060, an R5 5600H and a single 8GB DDR4 stick. Forza Horizon 5 struggled to run and hit 48 FPS average on medium in the benchmark.
Adding another 8GB made that shoot up to 100 FPS and I was able to use ultra settings at 60 FPS.
Lmao no it was probably because you were using the igpu instead of dgpu
Adding ram stick doesn't increase that much only increases like 10 15 fps
I can run that on ultra at 60+ with a 1060
Watch out for new graphic drivers update as I downloaded the latest version and had massive problems. I actually had to go back and install older versions and it is working perfectly now.
For mistake #3: Does being plugged into the wall mean that power does not flow through the battery? I am not sure I understand why being plugged in means your battery lives longer (also does this mean that if I am almost always plugged into the wall, then the battery doesn't degrade?)
6:47 the bonus YOU COOKING
On the subject of laptop placement - elevating the laptop partially with a few bottle tops or even going for elevated stands would also help greatly with the cooling efficiency.
ya just lift the back end up a bit does help. also i have a usb fan that i blow onto my laptop when gaming
I just use a box of a external hardrive to lift it up. Works really well
You mean to keep a laptop on a bottle head ? I am confused, in that bottle head statement
@@piedepew I mean using the lids of bottles - prop one in each corner of the laptop and lift it up a bit
I use 4 boxes from soap bars, one on each corner, can really hold anything well
The 10th tip is the best of the them all. I always forget to turn my laptop sideways while downloading stuff and the loading bar starts waiting for the elections. Thanks, your a life saver man :)
Actually if you put your laptop the other way around with hinges open (make a ^ shape) while it is connected to a external monitor and M&K it will help substantially with the cooling!
6:51 Top Notch Brilliant Idea my brother😂😂🤣🤣😆😆
This channel deserves all the credit in the world.Great work Jarrod Keep it up
Mistake 11: pay a fortune for a macbook believing its gpu is as powerful as the 3080.
LOLZ. True Mac soyboys thought that Mac would produce an input with 3080 power... they would be lucky to have 10- series gpu power in a shyte Overpriced macbook...
@@albinogator6221 what’s wrong with soy.

These are quite useful thank you!
I thought the 10th tip was a joke until it actually worked. That’s so useful and I’m so happy I learnt about it.
6:50 helped me alot with downloading games reducing the time from 5 hours to 20 minutes. Thanks!
Lmao. Can't believe I never thought about that download trick. Thanks for sharing. Also, That RGB display cable is sick. What's the name?
It's an HDMI, you can find it here: amzn.to/312yrwO
8.5 was a bitter reminder for me. Since I didn't know how to open and upgrade mine, I had to go to a store for someone to do it (I also bought an SSD and Ram Stick while at it) and unfortunately, the guy who screwed either forgot the sizes or didn't bother to measure the screws. Now I have 4 bumps on my laptop. Such fun.
That's negligence, as someone who has been into computers my whole life it is frustrating when you run into people who were careless with other's computers or just lazy. I would have raised hell because it's such a stupid careless mistake to make and unless they offered some recompense they should not have even been paid for services rendered. Tip for the future, find a computer nerd who really loves electronics. They will love the process and you can guarantee it is taken care of (probably even cleaned up a bit for free without mention). Again sorry to hear that happened, such a stupid error on their part.
Hey Jarood,
Loooong time lurker!. I recently got an Legion 5 with the same spec as your. Hoping to keep it for 3to4 years. This video was perfect.
Now I can consider myself as an expert laptop user as I had known about all this mistakes from my own experience. Although, my laptop is not gaming at all, I managed to reach the best possible performance out of my poor Inspiron 5770. Thanks for the video!
Glad it was useful! Don't worry one day you'll get an epic gaming beast 😎
@@JarrodsTech it’s my birthday, which gaming laptop should I buy for 700-1200ish dollars?
I'd recommend trying number 10. It really improved the loading of games

Pro tip: when tilting your laptop for better premiere export speeds, remember to set it back straight after the first pass or the bar will get stuck at 100% for VBR 2 pass. I just encountered this issue yesterday. You would think Adobe would fix it, smh.
I will report this to Adobe now 😡
😂 your humor these days are killing Jarrod 🙏keep it up brother and thanks for guiding us the all and only laptop reviewer
My laptop is from 2012 and I still run it daily.
Upgraded the ram, replaced the DVD reader with an SSD, overclocked the GPU and upgraded the CPU (yes it's that old).
And it still runs...fine. Obviously I can't run the latest AAAs but gaming really isn't my priority anymore.
What I learned though is that I'm gonna invest quite a bit in my next laptop. I've spent well over a year of my life staring at that screen, probably even two, so my next laptop better have a fantastic screen.
Nice!
you can upgrade a laptop cpu from 2012 ??
i have a question. How do you skip the lock screen, and get imediatly to the desktop page when opening a laptop?
Set password to blank and it will let you. Unfortunately, that means you can't have a password. You can also achieve it (sort of) if you have Windows Hello Face. It will unlock if it recognises you.
@@JarrodsTech thank you🙏🙏
I had a Lenovo gaming laptop whose hinges broke, I drilled through the back and riveted them into place. The bezel won't go on anymore but hey, it has integrity now.
Mine broke three days ago. I will never buy lenovo again.
lano i had a Lenovo as well, the hinges really are shit on them
FUN FACT:
On an Asus laptop with Armoury Crate installed, switching it to Turbo mode overclocks the laptop.
It shows the overclock in MSI Afterburner.
ye but your laptop goes from a normal plane engine to fighter jet engine
@@gaurav_W+ Yeah so what. Would rather play an airplane than a lava bucket.

it’s not a massive overclock though.
It’s quite small.

While adding an additional ssd to my laptop, I wasn't able to tighten one screw which held the ssd in place completely. When I tried to tighten that screw it kept spinning/slipping. I thought that it's half way in so it's okay and closed my laptop up. Laptop worked great for a couple of days, then I had to travel somewhere and put the laptop in my bag. When I booted my laptop up again after that, there was a pop sound and the screen won't come on, I could see a little bit of of white smoke coming out of the air vents. I was terrified. Later, I opened up the back of my laptop and found that the ssd screw which was loose had come out. The stray screw was stuck under a heat pipe, next to an IC and there was a black patch around that IC. So yea, one stray screw fried my motherboard :')
The travelling must've got that loose screw out.
Just like Jarrod said, please please be careful of keeping a track of the screws while upgrading your laptop, and also if there are any faulty screws which don't go all the way in/you' re not able to tighten, please don't use that screw. My ssd was being held in place by 4 screws, one was faulty, I could have left that one screw and the other 3 screws would have held the ssd in place perfectly fine, but I put the 4th screw in anyway. That mistake has cost me my laptop now.
One stray screw can literally fry your mobo. I'll be taking my laptop to a repair shop to see if something can be done.
Don't let any screw fall onto the mobo while doing upgrades/cleaning your lap.
Jarrod is very well trying to control his laugh after showing the 10th bonus mistake 😂
Hey quick question, I've been using an angled cooler for my laptop for a while now, meaning it's most of the time at a 15 degree angle while in use.
Is there any way this could damage any components, like fans or hard drive or is this safe to use?
It is safe, it doesn't affect any spinning or stationary component. It is actually optimal because it lets more air accessible to the fans.
Here's mine: don't use your gaming laptop's lid closed when connecting to an external monitor for extended periods of time (while gaming). Your battery is very likely to bulge or even explode. I have changed my battery 3 times already.
Do you mean while on battery or while plugged?
@@Unborn8436 That is besides the point. While under load, if the lid is closed the airflow is going to be worse, resulting in higher temperatures inside the laptop
Doesn't this depend on the laptop, though? Legion 5 doesn't have any vents there.
@@bickboose9364 if your keyboard or the shell surrounding the keyboard can get hot, you shouldn't close your flap when playing games period.
@@Unborn8436 While plugged of course, on battery your gaming laptop only lasts about 5 minutes
Mistake #11 Keeping the CPU at stock, always apply an adaptative undervolt (not available on AMD for some reason).
Did these things since i got my laptop, its around 6 years now and still going well 💪
It took me years of laptops to be experienced enough to not make any of those anymore. Wish I had channels like yours, my dude when I was buying those laptops and it could've saved me some cash lol.
Thanks so much for this video, Jarrod. Thankfully, I've avoided all of those mistakes because, coming from Latin America, I've learned to take extra care of my equipment due to the high pricing.
I tried number 10, it's super awesome, can't believe I didn't think of it sooner
Good to see that I am committing exactly zero of these mistakes. Putting a laptop on its side can help with airflow when it’s doing a long task requiring a lot of computation.
@Green Mamba Games True, it does depend on where the vents are. Fortunately, it only takes the smallest amount of common sense to avoid cutting off airflow.
