Notes about this video: 1a. I don't use a mat (I think they are called anti-fatigue mats) because I stand on soft carpet, but if I was to stand on hard floor, I would use a mat. 1b. I stand barefoot or in my socks because it feels nice, I can wiggle my toes and massage my feet with a roller or ball while working. 2. When I'm coming up with creative ideas and writing videos scripts, I like to sit crossed-legged on my bed or sofa as I can let my mind wander and daydream. I don't really get that vibe when standing.
I was diagnosed with a bulging lumbar disc (many of us have this issue, more as we get older) and the healing "prescription" was this: No sitting, bending, twisting or lifting for 9 months. I organized a standing desk for myself, and watched my legs become stronger, and my back healed! No surgery needed! I think your balanced approach is best - many people have lumbar disc issues from slumping over a keyboard! This proactive approach will really help with that!
Hi Leana, I enjoyed your comment as I have a very similar diagnosis and am looking into a solution, hence why I am watching videos on stand up desks! I would be interested to see how much u stand / sit during the day and it’s amazing how your back has improved! I am desperate to try help my herniated disc as I am very fit and healthy, but I sit all day at my desk which I know is not great.
I had a similar issue with my tailbone so this made my transition to standing desks smooth since I had no choice and recovery should take 2-3 months. No I can’t imagine how I was able to sit for so long…
I'm not sure how many people could pull off that hat, but you are pure joy in it! I'm here to learn about the desks, and getting to see the hat is a lovely bonus. 😍
I commented on your previous video about the standing desks as I ended up buying one as a result. I have MS and was suffering with nerve pain in my lower back before I got this. I was trying not to sit down all the time to relieve the pressure. I have found this has helped and I tend to stand in the mornings and sit in the afternoon when I get tired and achey. I have noticed an improvement in my back so I massively appreciate the review and the update 👍🏻
I’ve been sitting at home for 2 years 😫 There’s no sign of me returning to my previous travelling life. I knew I was sitting too much. This video has given me the push to try it. Thanks Laura x
I’ve had an electric sit/stand desk for about 5 months and absolutely love it. I definitely find myself moving around more, and when I’m on the phone or just thinking I am much more likely to wander about now rather than stay sitting down. I also feel less tired at the end of the work day when haven’t been sitting down all day. One unexpected benefit was that I also sit better at the desk as I have been able to adjust it to the ideal height for sitting- which it turns out is quite a bit higher than my old desk was - even though I never felt the old desk was too low. I did hesitate because of the cost, but would definitely buy one again now. Also I purchased the frame only and reused the top of my existing desk to keep the cost down and also so it fitted in exactly the same space.
Yes! A bit of both, sitting and standing is what I find works best for me. Mind you I stand and walk mostly then I sit and it has developed so over time. Great video! Thank you!
I worked from home and bought an adjustable desk off of Amazon, I loved it. I would start off sitting, then after my first break or after my lunch break I would sit for a while. then after my last break I would go back to standing again. Like you though I had to move into it slowly. It was awkward at first. But I truly enjoyed being able to stand and move around.
A friend used a home-made standing desk in a TV newsroom for years. Loved working standing. But also was moving all shifts around the newsroom and edit suites. He had a sit down workspace too - but preferred standing. At one time - he also HAD been very into yoga for years.
Ooh, this really got me thinking. We had a number of standing desks in my office and I always wanted to try one. Now I’m working from home maybe this is my opportunity, thanks Laura.
Hey Jan, I pleased you enjoyed the vid. I really enjoy standing for part of the day. If you're unsure perhaps try propping your computer on a higher surface for some time and see how you feel.
I have a standing desk too, which I like. I think the only trouble is not being so lazy as to let a bit of adjusting discourage me from moving between standing and sitting. Another great video, LT! Thanks for sharing!💚
Hi Laura ! I think that the best solution is to alternate standing and sitting position at desk ... listen to your body I mean . A few months ago one of my friend bought a yoga ball chair to relieve back and a.s pain ( She did not think to buy a chair base to keep the ball still ) and fell backwards while taking part in work videoconference from home during lockdown ... Kind of funny/ dramatic . Greetings from Paris .
I'd say an upgrade would be to have an electric desk and a good ergonomic chair. Then you can alternate between sitting and standing. So, you can alternate every hour or so. But yeah, that's a HEFTY investment and takes a lot of space.
You can get walking sticks that have a handle that opens up into a seat..maybe you could try this? You are basically leaning, rather than full on standing. They take the weight off the lower part of the spine and make standing, or leaning for long periods easier.
You've brought back memories of an office job I had once. I could never do office work again. I hated sitting down all day and I just remember the relief in being able to just stand. Yep just standing up to go to the photocopier or loo felt like a reward. I'll never go back to working in an office again.
Thank you for your informative and honest experience! I don't have a standing desk, but sometimes I work with my laptop at the kitchen countertop. It makes me feel super professional, I don't know why haha 😅
Hey Rosa, I am thinking about doing something like this. My mum and I have been on a (very) low sugar diet now for over 6 months and loving life. I am waiting for the right moment to make a video about it.
I found this really helpful because of the straight-up pros & cons breakdown. I've actually been considering a standup desk situation but thought "I can't stand all day tho!" dunno why my idiot brain didn't figure out that I could sit if I wanted to even if I have a standing desk 😂🤦♀️ Anyhoo, thank you for sharing your honest opinion! p.s.: Just watched your 3months on TH-cam update and if my opinion matters at all, I do like watching your product reviews, challenges, etc. but if you have a creative idea(s) that you want to add then I will watch those too! 💜
I thought you meant the kind of mat that electronics technicians use to drain off static electricity. After a minute or so, I realized what you were talking about.
Hi Laura I waited 3 years for a promotion for an Electric desk at ikea when the promotion came I bought 2 , one for home one for my job. Now I have been working for 5 years with them. finaly I work with 3 positions as I am small ( 1,63 m) at least I have a good position sitting on my chair. Then stand up but sitting just a litle on a higt chair and finaly without chair. I'm sure I would have give up without an electric desk Thanks for sharring yours experienses
Thanks for sharing your experience. My dreams include an electric desk to make the transition easy. From what I gather, those who use an standing set-up (with sitting) rarely look back,
Great video! Would this harmoni standing desk set up work well to make a desk treadmill i.e. walking pad under the desk? Or better to get an adjustable desk?
Hi - I think your videos are approaching my ideal imagined use for TH-cam. Informative, friendly and retaining an excellent personal element (felt like you where talking to me directly) So many videos on here are about monetisation but I genuinely felt as though you are trying to help people - which is something to be celebrated. I also feel as though if I met you, you would be easy to get along with. I think this is more to do with you as a person rather than presentation technique. Anyway it's a sub from me :)
Great video, thanks. I got one a few weeks ago, so it was awesome to see your thoughts. Can I ask if you wear shoes when you're standing? Do you know if shoe drop has much of an effect?
Hey, how are you getting on with your desk? Any good or not-so-good things? I work in socks or barefoot. I’d say a flat slipper or shoe would be good so everything is in line as nature intended, but depends if you’re used to that kind of shoe 👞
@@LauraTryUK I ended up getting a Flexspot single motor 'fancy'ish one in a sale. I've actually been super impressed with it, and the mechanical function/memory is insanely useful. Even with 2x 23" monitors, it takes a few seconds to go from seated to raised heights. The only real downside as far as I'm concerned is very slight wobble when I'm typing away when standing. I'm 6"1', so it's extended quite high, and with the dual monitors, the desk wobbles very slightly when typing. I've got used to it though, so it doesn't really bother me. I knew that my posture was bad, but it amazes me how difficult it is to stand for long periods! Thanks for your shoe advice, keep the great videos coming!
LT, I just decided to take the plunge and buy one of these, so I looked on both your videos to see if there was a referral code for you to make a few quid from the recommendation. Sadly, I couldn't find one, but after making the purchase they gave me one so I could earn commission on any sales I generate. I think you've missed a trick here, maybe you should contact the company?
I find that after standing for roughly an hour my shins hurt so I switch back to sitting. I want to experiment with underdesk cycling device while sitting and also alternate between that and standing...you should do a review on underdesk cycling
I wish I had the room. I think I would love to have a standing desk. I have too many screens 😭 I really find I slump to much and the angle I think is so bad for my neck. I have been having such a bad neck ache at the moment.
I think the best strategy is to only use a standing position for a few days, because if you have a chair nearby it’s tempting to give up on this experiment completely.
Occupational diseases caused by standing work are older than those caused by the use of chairs and with equally serious effects. Choosing between two evils is like having to give up soup, because you can't eat it with a fork, instead of trying with a spoon! If the current chairs are not good, let's make a chair that increases muscle tone, intensifies metabolism, allows a correct posture!
I’ve started using a standing desk in the past few weeks and honestly I think I’ve gone in too hard too early standing most of the day so I definitely recommend like Laura says to take it easy. But I feel strength building in my legs and core even in this short time. And I totally agree on the sleep, my sleep has been solid since I transitioned. After suffering so much pain in my lower back and hips from sitting all day, I am totally hooked on standing. Thanks Laura, I really love your channel and the challenges you do, so inspirational!
Maybe the Question shouldn't be standing vs sitting, but when it is the Question then YES it's standing all the way! Sitting how we do is not natural. We are bipedal. Sitting fd my hips.

I have a sitting/standing transition desk and it’s made 200% of a difference in my work day. I alternate every 2 hours or so.
Hey Kirby, nice plan!
I think I’d do the same if I didn’t have a pack-away desk.
I look forward to an electric desk in the future.
Yes i have one of those two and alternate every 1-2 hours.

aha! Kelly Starrett recommends this - he calls it 'perching.' He uses a high stool or ladder.
