    I learned this quite some time ago. I thought it would be better if I used natural beauty products. But my skin gradually got worse and worse over time. I was getting itching and had breakouts. Finally gave up and went back to basic drugstore like Aveeno and cerave and then my skin would instantly clear up. It was all the lavender, orange, lemon, eucalyptus, tea tree on the "natural" products that were giving me a rash. Learned my lesson.

      I also had allergy reaction to citrus oil before. Lavender and mint were more or less fine as long as it's in lower concetration, but whenever I find citrus oil in a product that is strong enough for me to smell it, it often gives me rashes and dry patches.

      This is half trolling and half sharing. I adore peppermint oil. Besides some form of steroid creams, it has been the best for alleviating my itch, whether it be bug bites or eczema flares.

    I am an esthetician in a medical spa and we use and carry natural botanical lines, as well as clinical lines with synthetic ingredients. I’ve seen patients have reactions to both, so it really depends on the individual and what they are sensitive to. It can be extremely hard to pinpoint because both of these types of products have SO many ingredients in them. Bottom line is - ANY product can have ingredients people can react to, whether they are “natural” or not.

    • @marisamorais3150
      @marisamorais3150 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      So it seems you miss the point, synthetic ingredients are exactly what they say they are and botanicals contain many ingredients that arent stated, do you know how many compounds have chamomile or lavanda or tea tree for instance? When i read an ingredient list and i see sodium hydroxide, i know exactly what it is. I dont know if i see a botanical and very likely you dont either

    • @Musebygaia
      @Musebygaia ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Usually the allergen compounds from lavender oil ect, are added to the list (geraniol, linalool, linalylacetate ect) and I do know how to read an ingredient’s list and spot a botanical but I totally get where you’re coming from and what you mean 😀

    • @rocheller750
      @rocheller750 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      The point of my comment is that there are many ingredients that people can be sensitive or allergic to. Not just botanicals. Many synthetic ingredients can cause reactions as well.

    I know the contact dermatitis very well unfortunately. 🙁 And it didn't happen overnight. My sensitivity happened over time and started when I was fully wrapped up in the "clean beauty" hype. Everything I used was laced with essential oils, etc., many claiming to be "natural preservatives". It's all bogus BS. After going back to using simple, fragrance free drugstore products, my skin was restored, thankfully. 😊 Thank you for this video Dr. Dray. Very informative and helpful information. 👏

    That whole “I can’t pronounce it, so it shouldn’t go on my skin” is very similar to something a particular clean food charlatan likes to say. As someone who has an allergy to all salicylates, both topical and ingested, reading ANY product label clean or not is frustrating. Companies seem to have new names or compounds with the same set of ingredients coming out all the time. I'm constantly having to Google what certain ingredients are to find out what chemical combinations they are made of. I agree with you about clean beauty not always being as safe as advertised, but it's not just them that are in the market of duping their customers.

    I had a horrible allergic reaction to the Tata Harper Superkind line which is supposed to be for sensitive skin. I put on the serum and moisturizer before bed and when I woke up the next morning, my face was literally swollen like a balloon - I looked like I'd been beaten up in a boxing match - I'm not exagerrating. I had to go to urgent care and they gave me a steroid and antihistamine injection. Even after the swelling went down, my face was red. It took a couple weeks to get back to normal. Natural isn't always better.

      This is why I never put on a product at night before I've tested it for more than a week during the daytime. This is so that I can remove it immediately if I notice something. I even put on new retinols for a few hours before bed and then remove them, or keep them on if I'm up during the night. But that doesn't always help; I had the worst reaction from an Osmosis serum (for sensitive and rosascea skin...) after using it daily for a week. It crept up on me and I didn't get what was going on since I had been fine for a week.

    After trying all the main brands, I gave up and gave "natural" skincare a chance. It worked after all other avenues have been exhausted. I have been using natural brands (Avalon, Andalou, Bert's Bees, Eva Organics) for years with no problems.
    I just know from my experience that the "one-fits-all' approach sometimes does not work. Will make "natural" skincare routine work for me forever, I don't know, but I guess time will tell. I am just happy that something finally broke through for me.

    Love this. To your point about fragrance-free products containing scented ingredients, I had noticed that my fragrance-free shaving cream had benzaldehyde and its characteristic almond scent and wondered what that was about. Now that makes sense that it has other purposes in the formulation. Also organic chemistry is super interesting and it’s kind of sad that people seem to almost brag about their ignorance of it when it comes to clean and natural products.

    I agree with you, but we highly regulate this market in the EU. So if you want to buy plant-based, ecologically produced cosmetics, you have to look for certificates (big names such as ECOCERT, BDIH etc.). One thing is well-produced cosmetics from the "chemical" side; the other is nasty products pushed to the market by hyping it. When I was younger, I could not use ordinary shampoos because they all gave me dandruff or hair loss; only shampoos with ECOCERT stamps made my scalp calm. Nowadays, I can use whatever I want. However, I received a sample from Sephora of face cream from a new and fancy brand, and it gave me an immediate rush on my face ... so we have to think and choose what is good for us.

    • @msk-qp6fn
      @msk-qp6fn ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, if it works for you good for you. And I think europe have many very good natural/clean/green beauty products and indeed have better regulations for those than USA or Sephora. I certainly enjoy Weleda's skin food rich cream, for example, and I have eczema. I do see why folk herbalists and etc say botanical extracts are beneficial. However, it is certainly worth admitting that based on satistics and modern science, green/clean/natural beauty products has a higher chance of sensitization.

    I am so lucky to be engaged to a clinical pharmacist that opened my eyes and helped me rearrange all my paradigms. For many years I was living with undiagnosed and untreated anxiety and depression disorder (as well as Atopic Dermatitis). I had so many stigmas about mental care, doctors, psychiatrists, medicine - yet I felt extremely comfortable doing all sorts of drugs from people I don't even know at parties. But ofcourse was very proud of myself for never taking a pill when I have a headache.
    I know that this is not the topic, but to me, it is all the same. The Internet made information accessible and within time this accessibility becomes a real problem. There is so much misleading information, so much confusion. I'm so glad I found you a year ago and am so glad you don't get greedy and fall into Marketing traps Yourself, like many TH-camrs do. Please stay committed to your beautiful values forever and ever💜💜💜💜💜💜 lots of love to you from Israel 🌹💗

    I ended up at an allergist about 8 years ago when my scalp was so itchy and irritated that I would wake up in the middle of the night feeling as if I had a horde of fire ants biting my scalp. After testing, there were approximately 10 pages of chemical and natural compounds and ingredients I was either allergic to or were irritants to my skin. Dx: contact dermatitis which has since become a more severe excema. Sadly, some of the compounds included some of the more commonly used preservatives such as sodium benzoate, propylene glycol, phenoxyethanol, etc. Also chamomile and pretty much all in the matriarca family of chamomile. It's been a nightmare trying to find hair and skincare products over the last 8 years that DON'T contain one of the allergens or irritants on my lists!
    I've recently started trying a few products that do contain some of the ingredients though waay down towards the bottom of their lists, since I was told the lists are in order of amounts used. So the lower they are the list of ingredients the lower the amount used in the product. Thankfully, so far I haven't had a reaction, except for the fragrance in a Neutrogena product, which I reported to them and they reimbursed me the cost of the product. But, every day is a gamble. And it sucks.

    When I was a teenager I was super into living a more eco-friendly lifestyle, and a lot of the books I read on the topic enforced this belief that natural is better. I totally bought it, especially because after spending my middle school years destroying my skin with those super harsh acne products from Neutrogena, Clean and Clear, etc, the natural products I ended up buying did seem less irritating in comparison. I bought into it for years, up until my mid 20s. My skin looks so much better now that I'm actually using products that are non-irritating and trusting scientific and medical professionals. It bums me out that my good intentions from when I was younger were used against me to feed into the "clean beauty" BS.

    Natural products are wonderful when I'm making them myself, especially because i don't add fragrances or too much of the essential oils in the face products and i did not encounter rashes or breakouts.. of course, be mindful of the face products if they contain comedogenic ingredients or irritants. I follow Ellemental recipes and use oils, butters, emulsifiers, waters, actives etc, and test the pH at the end. I'm not mixing food style diy in the kitchen
    The only thing though that i would not take out from the drugstore is my retinol. I feel like something like retinol is not something you can easily do at home. That and sunscreen!
    But i did dabble with things like oil cleanser, face wash, serums with vitamin C or niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, lip balms etc
    What i can say is that I'm never satisfied with moisturisers I'm making for the face, i end up using them as body cream and that feels wonderful! But i do have oily skin, i should try rather a gel type moisturizer
