Licensed aesthetician here: this guy's advice is not 100% accurate and has many errors. First of all, beginning his video declaring he "does not care what dermatologist's say" is incredibly flippant and arrogant. You're dismissing experts in their field who have done the work to earn a medical degree and who specialize in skin so this is not an auspicious beginning. Second, while salicylic acid and niacinamide are excellent ingredients they have almost no effect on skin when in a rinse off product like your cleanser as they are not on the skin long enough before being rinsed down the drain. They need to be in leave on products like a toner, serum or moisturizer. Also you need to use a gentle cleanser; not just water. Using water alone does not cleanse the skin as water does not contain surfactants like cleansers do to actually clean the skin. Regarding sunscreen: there is nothing wrong with using a non-mineral based sunscreen. Avobenzone is one of only a few ingredients approved by the FDA for broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection with the others being titanium and zinc. This guy also uses the term "non-comedogenic" which has no legal definition and is purely a marketing term. Any brand can claim their products are non-comedogenic and do not have to prove it as there are no agreed upon standards as to what the word really means. I could go on and on...bottom line: do not get your skincare advice from influencers and good looking guys on TH-cam. See a licensed skincare professional such as an esethetician or your dermatologist even though this guy thinks he knows better than they do. ;-)
Sorry but the field of dermatology is under the influence of BIG PHARMA, meaning yall dont care about solving skin problems at the root but only recommend temporary, surface level fixes which puts us in a cycle of buying skincare products week in and week out. The main things you guys are concerned with is our pockets and ways to keep us coming back and hooked on "products" and "cosmetic procedures".

I am a light sleeper; but do take power naps everyday after work before my daily walks in the evening. Stress mostly from work is extremely hard to avoid. I avoid bakery goods and sweets, as well as over the counter skin products at all cost; as they in the long run do more harm then good to the skin.

If you have dry or problematic skin There’s no need to wash your face twice daily. You risk stripping your skin of oils,, and could trigger issues. I have oily acne prone skin and even for me washing once in the evening, apply bha and moisturizer, and apply spf in the morning makes my skin happy. I would add that chemical there is a ton of fear mongering with chemical sunscreens. From reputable brands,, They are safe and work very well. Plus they do not clump in beard or facial hair, and are suitable for a broader range of skin tones.
I had severe acne and even after medication I had acne coming up every now and then. Then I changed my skin care routine which works 100% all the time. 1. Workout 5 days a week 2. Eat 90% whole foods in my diet. At least 200g fruits and 200g plus leafy vegies 3. Drink 3-4 litres water daily 4. Move the body throughout the day 10k to 20k steps 5. Use SA face wash and a light moisturizer. Sunscreen if I go out in sun
“It's a popular misconception that retinol is an exfoliant. It isn't, because it cannot break the bonds that hold dead skin cells to the surface. Retinol is an antioxidant that promotes cell turnover, and an important skin-restoring ingredient that can impact how skin cells mature.”
I’m 19 and still a student so I’m broke and I just use the AM and PM creams from CeraVe. AM contains moisturizer and SPF50, and PM contains niacinamide and hyaluronic acid.
Don't forget about the GOAT of skincare products, Tretinoin. Not for everyone, but its a game-changer for a lot of people for both acne, anti-aging, and general skin health.
I agree. But anyway, whatever skin type you have, we need a gentle cleanser for every day and one based on AHA/BHA/PHA (make your pick) to use 1-2 times a week. Plus tretinoin. Vitamin C in AM routine before SPF 50+. a Skinceuticals cream cannot replace a good serum over the counter power cream.
If you already have pretty good skin then a cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen is good enough, however for people with skin concerns like rosacea, this just isn't enough
Here are some more helpful tips: 1) take power naps if you can. It helps with eye bags and dark circles 2) have a freshly squeezed lemon drink 4x a week. Its your vit c from within. 3) take b complex vitamins and iron regularly. 4) drink water water water!
It's worth noting that when using a cleanser with active ingredients such as salicylic acid and niacinamide, you should leave the cleanser on for at least 5 minutes (ideally 10) so that the active ingredients take effect and are not just put on and immediately washed off.
My parents don't let me wash my bedding very often so i just ordered a 2 pack of pillowcases on Amazon, looking to change it out atleast 1 a week to hopefully help with bald head acne.
6:19 Retinol will not cause a bad reaction with the sun, it will just suffer photolisis (it will be degraded) and will have no effect on your skin. Also I’d like to see the scientific references to some of your claims…
It's not necessary to get a cleanser with added ingredients like salicylic acid, vitamins etc. Those ingredients need to stay on skin for sometime in order to have any effect. Any added ingredients (like salicylic acid) in a cleaner/ rinse off product will wash off the face before it has a chance to do anything.
Nice video. Just two things. First, retinol is NOT an exfoliant and should be used sparingly, as tolerated. Two, there is nothing wrong with chemical sunscreen.
@@preciousfires5088Sure. Most, if not all, credible journals and research on the chemical sunscreen shows there is nothing harmful about it. It does get more into your blood stream more than its mineral counterpart; however, you simply sweat/urinate that out. I use chemical all day long. Pregnant women use it too, and they are much more elegant to apply, and thereby making it more likely for repeated use. Don’t believe these TH-cam pseudo scientists who hasn’t read a journal for a day in their lives make you believe that chemical sunscreens are bad for you.

There definitely is quite some misinformation going on in this video, especially in the sunscreen department, but I gues you can take it as a starting point. Dont forget to moisturize your decolleté area as well and the collar bones and the back of your neck. Age and damage shows up severly in these parts because the skin is very thin here. In particular the decolleté
The amount of inaccuracies here for someone who has such good skin is astonishing. And derms never claim diet does not affect the skin (it really does in the long run, especially when discussing advanced glycation end products).
Really like the video Brandon but organic/chemical sunscreens are safe! They usually have higher UVA protection, which is super important. The US has older filters but we can always get European sunscreens online which are great!

I had really really bad acne prone oily skin....my derm recommended 2 percent Salicylic acid face wash....I ve been using it for about 2-3months....what happened is that my acne got really really bad and the skin became too much oily than before...this is because salicylic acid remove all the oil above your skin which makes the skin to produce more oil which is a natural mechanism....please just use a gentle foaming cleanser ...salicylic can be used 1-2 times a week
Pretty good video for beginners but I would like to add a few things: 2:17 Natural doesn't mean it's better for you, natural skincare can be good / bad depending on what you're doing specifically 2:24 Using a cleansing product twice a day can be too much for dry skin, I would recommend to only cleanse with water in the morning for everyone who isn't oily 2:44 You can also have normal skin, if you can't figure out if an area is dry or oily it might be normal (between dry and oily) 3:33 Exfoliants like salicylic acid (and glycolic, lactic and mandelic acid) probably won't do anything in a cleanser bc you wash everything off again, it makes more sense to look for these ingredients in products that you don't wash off 6:18 Besides retinol you should also not use exfoliants in the morning bc they make your skin more sensitive to the sun, it's also a bad idea to use retinol and exfoliants on the same day 7:25 I wouldn't generally advice to only buy mineral / physical / inorganic sunscreen, chemical / organic sunscreen leaves no white cast and generally feels better but can be too much for sensitive skin, I would recommend mineral for sensitive skin and chemical for everyone else bc it feels much less unpleasant and you're therefore much more likely to use enough of it; also: a low spf is better than no spf and the best sunscreen is the one you actually use My routine recommendation: Morning: cleanse with water, sunscreen Evening: cleanser, serum (if you're willing to do 3 steps), moisturizer My product recommendations: CeraVe cleansers and moisturizers (they have good formulas and clearly communicates what skin type a product is best for) If you want to add a third step in the evening and use a serum after cleansing and before moisturizing I recommend the following serums by The Ordinary: for all skin types (slowly introduce each serum separately, especially if you're sensitive) Retinol serum (1x/w): theordinary.com/en-de/granactive-retinoid-2-emulsion-serum-100419.html Salicylic acid serum (2x/w): theordinary.com/en-de/salicylic-acid-2-solution-exfoliator-100619.html Lactic acid serum (2x/w): theordinary.com/en-de/lactic-acid-10-ha-exfoliator-100426.html Sunscreen (only chemical, bc I don't have enough experience with mineral ones): Normal - Dry: www.yesstyle.com/en/by-wishtrend-uv-defense-moist-cream-sonnencreme-50g/info.html/pid.1114105358 Normal - Oily: www.yesstyle.com/de/beauty-of-joseon-relief-sun-sonnencreme-50-ml/info.html/pid.1107744417

Chemical/organic sunscreens are not bad or harmfull at least you have an allergy or very sesitive skin, and are going to be more comfortable to use in most cases, do not leave you white and are not so heavy like mineral, just use one from a well known brand (for both mineral and chemical)

No evidence chemical cause problem yet people like him spread false information about sunscreen. Mineral sunscreen offer less protection than chemical sunscreen and you know most people rarely apply enough sunscreen anyways.
It really depends on your skincare. but if you have oily or sensitive skin, then less is more. someone with problematic skin like me need more to have my skin in good shape. i have parts that are oily, parts that are dry, and then sensitive parts. i’d say not many people have it as complicated as me.
My skin got irritated after I used so many cleansers, face wash, scrub, and DIYs on my skin to get rid of sun tanning and some very little black spot. Then my skin started stinging after using anything, applying anything on it. So I stopped using everything for two weeks and my skin got better. But again, I bought CeraVe Hydrating cleanser and CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion. But after two or three days of using it, I had red bumps all over my cheeks. I was crazy to use so many things and Nothing suits my skin right now........
I love how he mentions diet, sleep and overall cleanliness, people try and sell you products claiming it’ll magically give you glass skin, no products matter if you don’t have the basic principles to being clean

Great video Brandon! I have been recently following a skin care routine and I can assure it makes all the difference. One key part I would like to talk tho: what about the skin in other parts of the body? I understand that the face is the most "direct" form of skincare, but a clean back or chest is as important when going on a swim for example. I would really appreciate a video about how to have clear skin in those areas as well!
If you’re talking about acne in general, go for products like body wash with ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. I have a lot of bacne so my dermatologist suggested using naturium’s salicylic body spray, so you can leave on that product on your body instead of washing it off. Since these products are active ingredients, you would want to leave them on so they’re doing the work. If you are using a body wash medium, you’ll want to let the product sit for 4-5 minutes before washing it off. If you use a loofah, switch it out often or buy washable scrubs, cause bacteria grows in moist environments, which can make you breakout. I personally use silicone brushes. If it’s rough, dry textured, bumpy, you can try amlactin. I have eczema, cetaphil and cerave’s basic moisturizers and slugging with a petrolatum based product have really helped manage my dryness. Any itching or rashes, try oatmeal or zinc based products. If you’re dealing with hyperpigmentation you can try glycolic acid, helps renew your skin and is very light on sensitivity. At the end of the day, talk to your dermatologist. They would know your skin best. I also recommend watching dr dray, doctorly, lab muffin beauty science, if you haven’t heard of them. They give great tips for taking care of your skin.
I'm a full time vegan and none of these moisturizers worked on my skin but upon trying the beef tallow my skin is now smooth and glowing. I got lots of compliments from my co-workers!
7:29 this “don’t use” list doesn’t make much sense to me. Retinyl palmitate is a form of vitamin a - like retinol which you said we can use. Also the fact to just stick to mineral sunscreens is definitely not good advice. “Chemical” or organic sunscreens are more than safe to use. There is so much fear mongering around them for no reason. Use what sunscreen you want. Parabens are also plenty safe in cosmetics. I mean they are literally present in blueberries lol. There is more on the “don’t use” list that doesn’t sit well with me. But I don’t want to type paragraphs. I just mainly wanted to say that you don’t have to use strictly a mineral/inorganic sunscreen.
Fr I’m so sick of the fear-mongering these “natural chemical-free skincare” enthusiasts do. I mean according to their logic, mercury can be found in nature so it’s completely safe to consume right????????? As soon as I see shit like paraben on people’s harmful chemicals list, I immediately assume their opinions are invalid or misinformed.
just because it’s a form of vitamin a doesn’t make it safe research the side effects in combination with sunlight, I understand why it might not make sense but he’s not just putting these chemicals on the screen for no reason or with no evidence, the regulation in America over many chemicals in everything we consume is not strict there are plenty of “safe” but long term and with repetitive use harmful chemicals in plenty of things with research to back it up, there’s a reason people live longer in countries with less factories
@@skxrredvitamin a is very much safe. In correct doses of course. Vitamin a helps defend your skin from the damaging effects of uv (it doesn’t work like spf, that’s not what I’m saying) but vitamin a is incredibly researched backed. Both orally and topically.

My skincare is:
Morning: cleanser - vitamin c serum (it temps me brighten my skin because I do have hyperpigmentation) - Moisturizer -SPF
Night : double cleansing - Moisturizer - pimple treatment
I started a herbal tea & water fast today for two weeks to start my gut healing & skim healing journey 😊.... Black seed oil & wild oil of oregano & sea moss & cod liver oil etc as well too 😊
Hydration hydration hydration! that is my skin care secret! I drink at least a gallon of water throughout the day. I also eat lots of organic vegetables, berries, and beans, and avoid processed foods at all cost! I only eat wild caught Salmon; Organic chicken breast, organic eggs, grass fed whole milk, and as many organic products as possible. I also walk 30 minutes to an hour at least 5 days a week.

Plus they do not clump in beard or facial hair, and are suitable for a broader range of skin tones.
hey chiefs, this is all the instructions you need to get that clear skin. concise and straight to the point
Hi
I had severe acne and even after medication I had acne coming up every now and then. Then I changed my skin care routine which works 100% all the time.
1. Workout 5 days a week
2. Eat 90% whole foods in my diet. At least 200g fruits and 200g plus leafy vegies
3. Drink 3-4 litres water daily
4. Move the body throughout the day 10k to 20k steps
5. Use SA face wash and a light moisturizer. Sunscreen if I go out in sun
Sunscreen at all times.
Acne is caused by bacteria in clogged follicles. Nothing in your "master plan" addresses that.

I’m 19 and still a student so I’m broke and I just use the AM and PM creams from CeraVe. AM contains moisturizer and SPF50, and PM contains niacinamide and hyaluronic acid.
How's your skin doing with that?
Thanks for the awesome tips! My skin is already thanking me. Excited for your next one!
Don't forget about the GOAT of skincare products, Tretinoin. Not for everyone, but its a game-changer for a lot of people for both acne, anti-aging, and general skin health.

How many times a week do you use tret
@@JitTrippinOngI use it daily but I started at 2x per week and added a day per week if my skin wasn’t too dry
Or just any retinol
Here are some more helpful tips:
1) take power naps if you can. It helps with eye bags and dark circles
2) have a freshly squeezed lemon drink 4x a week. Its your vit c from within.
3) take b complex vitamins and iron regularly.
4) drink water water water!
It's worth noting that when using a cleanser with active ingredients such as salicylic acid and niacinamide, you should leave the cleanser on for at least 5 minutes (ideally 10) so that the active ingredients take effect and are not just put on and immediately washed off.
if you have acne prone skin then adapalene is a must. plus it helps with anti aging and sun damage.
My parents don't let me wash my bedding very often so i just ordered a 2 pack of pillowcases on Amazon, looking to change it out atleast 1 a week to hopefully help with bald head acne.

Perfect, if you’ve found something that works for you that’s great!
@@BrandonBalfour Could you do a video on how to treat spots on your arms/back, specifically how to remove scars and what not?
6:19 Retinol will not cause a bad reaction with the sun, it will just suffer photolisis (it will be degraded) and will have no effect on your skin. Also I’d like to see the scientific references to some of your claims…
Don't hold your breath. But then, you wouldn't have to worry about your skin either.
Yes, my mistake on retinol it’s technically is an antioxidant
Don't talk like you have any rights to say chemical sunscreens are good. Use it and suffer, Good but don't make others suffer the same
@@mozart0 use spell/grammar check first so I can understand you ;)
Can you expand on why chemical sunscreens are okay? just curious

AM: wash with cleanser, ice, light therapy, toner, face spray, vit c, hyaluronic serum, moisturizer, sunblock, face tint

Pretty good video for beginners but I would like to add a few things:
2:17 Natural doesn't mean it's better for you, natural skincare can be good / bad depending on what you're doing specifically
2:24 Using a cleansing product twice a day can be too much for dry skin, I would recommend to only cleanse with water in the morning for everyone who isn't oily
2:44 You can also have normal skin, if you can't figure out if an area is dry or oily it might be normal (between dry and oily)
3:33 Exfoliants like salicylic acid (and glycolic, lactic and mandelic acid) probably won't do anything in a cleanser bc you wash everything off again, it makes more sense to look for these ingredients in products that you don't wash off
6:18 Besides retinol you should also not use exfoliants in the morning bc they make your skin more sensitive to the sun, it's also a bad idea to use retinol and exfoliants on the same day
7:25 I wouldn't generally advice to only buy mineral / physical / inorganic sunscreen, chemical / organic sunscreen leaves no white cast and generally feels better but can be too much for sensitive skin, I would recommend mineral for sensitive skin and chemical for everyone else bc it feels much less unpleasant and you're therefore much more likely to use enough of it; also: a low spf is better than no spf and the best sunscreen is the one you actually use
My routine recommendation:
Morning: cleanse with water, sunscreen
Evening: cleanser, serum (if you're willing to do 3 steps), moisturizer
My product recommendations:
CeraVe cleansers and moisturizers (they have good formulas and clearly communicates what skin type a product is best for)
If you want to add a third step in the evening and use a serum after cleansing and before moisturizing I recommend the following serums by The Ordinary: for all skin types (slowly introduce each serum separately, especially if you're sensitive)

Chemical/organic sunscreens are not bad or harmfull at least you have an allergy or very sesitive skin, and are going to be more comfortable to use in most cases, do not leave you white and are not so heavy like mineral, just use one from a well known brand (for both mineral and chemical)
Exactly. This is why I don’t listen to people like him. I rather listen to dermatologist and cosmetic formulator.
Cerave is good starting point. They have different type of cleansers, sunscreen and moisturizer.

Yes. Fashion and healthcare are so closely related. Fabrics and skin. Really no difference. Just a little more cutting and sewing with one of them - maybe the skin?
Currently I'm using The Ordinary Balancing and Clarifying serum which claims to target a lot of skin problems, in between of my cleanser and moisturizer. Thats about it.

I'm 35 and never used any skin care whatsoever. People tell me I look like I am in my 20s. Is it even necessary?
Great video Brandon! I have been recently following a skin care routine and I can assure it makes all the difference. One key part I would like to talk tho: what about the skin in other parts of the body? I understand that the face is the most "direct" form of skincare, but a clean back or chest is as important when going on a swim for example. I would really appreciate a video about how to have clear skin in those areas as well!
That's a valid point

And this is where you need to do more research. I recommend watching some of lab muffin beauty science’s videos on the topics of the safety of ingredients. His list lacks proper information about their safety. It was just a “don’t use” list. These types of videos are terrible. They spread so much misinformation and fear mongering. These ingredients are safe. Your use of the word chemicals is quite negative. Not all chemicals are bad. ESPECIALLY chemical spf. They are safe.
