Yeah, some influencers really be telling us to care about the environment by buying clean, non-toxic and eco-friendly products, but at the same time, they also have hundreds of unused skincare products on their shelves and throw away some of them.
@@whitepaper5241 You have to remember that for influencers, a huge part of their job is to review products. They kind of have to constantly get new products in order to accomplish that. And honestly, that's not a terrible thing - personally, having a single person review a product and disseminate that info is better than having a ton of people buy it and then come to a consensus on whether it was good or not. Yes, this means they have a ton of unused makeup lying around, but they can only go through so much of it by themselves, especially when they have more coming in every day. They can also only give away so much of it to family and friends. They can't resell it or give it away to fans because it's a health hazard and it would cause liability issues for them. I guess a solution could be to use disposable applicators for everything to try and keep it sterile, but that would create waste in of itself. So not sure about what could be done. The only real issue arises when an influencer pushes the idea that you _need_ to buy a ton of different products or a specific product to accomplish something. And for that, you can choose if you want to follow that particular kind of influencer. I personally choose not to
I work for a Surgical Oncologist specializing in Melanoma and the only thing we recommend patients use post surgery is Vaseline. Thank you for the video!
My skin completely changed, healed, stopped breaking out when I stopped used “clean/natural” products and started using basic, fragrance free, and fewer products. I wish marketers would knock it off with the bs
Same here. My skin was at it worse using those products then I found Dr. Dray and started to follow her product recommendations and my skin is clear and my pockets full!
Same. I cleared my dry, flaky, blackhead ridden skin by getting rid of the clean beauty products, and using dr dray’s three step method of wash, moisturize, sunscreen.
The reason brands attack petrolatum is precisely because it’s effective and dirt cheap. On paper, the competition is unbeatable, so they have to do their best to disqualify it.
This is why I think Hydroquinone is getting pulled from the shelves. They will sell it as a prescription for 10 times as much, then may return back to the shelves years from now for 10 times the price. That’s what they did with inhalers and other products.
That is probably the reason. My mother is a doctor and she always tells me about some cheap drug that has been pulled out of the market just to be switched with some more expensive and “more effective”
Me too! One time I forgot to put petroleum jelly around my eyes and used adapalene on my face. Had dry patches near my eyes the next morning. I can’t image how dry and irritated the skin around my eyes would be if I had been using adapalene without Dr. Dray’s advice!
I think it's just kinda funny there's people that are convinced vaseline is bad for you lol... but then want to put something like lemon straight on their skin.
Yh but every time I use vaseline on my son it gives him a rash that looks like breakout, EVERY TIME. I'll stop using it but then when I'm staying over my mother and I forget his cream I'm like hmm let me try vaseline one more time because "apparently it doesn't cause harm" but nope, after a day he breaks in to a rash. So I've learnt my lesson never again. And also I don't like vaseline for slugging because it catches dust particles in the air easier which then causes me to break out. I don't think vaseline causes breakout but it catches particles likes glue and I think that's what cause break outs.
You really should research and find out what ingredients are in your personal care products. I used mineral oil and petroleum jelly as an eye ointment for dry eyes when i was on a certain medication and eventually over time my eyes began to swell and burn. I suffered so much because I didn't know what was causing it. I went to 6 or 7 eye doctors and they told me to learn how to live with it and to keep using the ointment or my corneas will get scratched (Talking about fear mongering). I contacted the Boston dry eye institute and they told me I didn't have dry eyes because it doesn't cause that much pain. They referred me to an eye doctor in Seattle that day even though they had a 6 week waiting list. This doctor examined my eyes and told me that my eye were not dry. He examined them and said they looked like raw hamburger meat. He told me to stop using whatever I was using and to see him in Tacoma in 10 days. My eyes looked so much better. I was allergic to the stuff. My aunt can't use mineral oil to remover her eye makeup because they burn her eye so badly. I can't use any person care products with mineral oil, petroleum jelly, fragrance, sulphates silicones, alcohol, or parabens and a few others. Thank God they make natural personal care products or I wouldn't be using anything at.
I'm a 4c girls... this video reminds me of how I was soo afraid of sulphates silicones and parabens in hair care products... thanks doctor... this is a good content
I went back to hair grease after years of trying natural products. Coconut oil made my hair hard and shea butter created a giant pimple on my scalp. Shea Moisture worked great until other people got involved with the company.
Girl! Dr. Dray is the SOLE reason I became cool with using grease in my hair again after over 20 years. Idc what they say: VASELINE👏🏽 IS👏🏽 MY👏🏽 FRIEND!
I'm in the same boat atm. My 3a curls are suffering from dryness since I stopped using silicones and went with the curly girl method. I've tried many different non sulfate, non silicone shampoos and nothing helps with frizziness. I think I am going back to simple 'ole silicones soon😅
I can't use any personal care products with mineral oil, petrolium jelly, fragrance, sulphates silicones, alcohol, or parabens. Thank God they make natural personal care products or I wouldn't be using anything at all.
I’m a guy new to using moisturisers etc as I’m 38 now and my skin needs more care now. I’m using Palmers cocoa butter moisturiser which is petroleum ‘based’. All the info on carcinogenic ingredients is a bit overwhelming. So is the one I’m using okay?
Yep I had surgery and told my surgeon I was going to use a scar cream on the wound and she said to just use Vaseline… it’s better for wound healing. I was stunned, but did as she said, and my scar is almost invisible.
I am mixed Black (I choose to not use the label African American). Growing up, Vaseline was the go to "face cream" if there was no Ponds or Oil of Olay (glass bottle with the runny pink liquid). We washed our face with Camay. I'm showing my age 😉
Actually, you're probably not showing your age. We used to hear "Black don't crack," referring to the lack of wrinkles on most older people of color. Camay and Olay or Vaseline is probably somewhat responsible for that.
@@andreaplummer3841 🤣 Yep, "Black don't crack." I will turn 52 this year. My grandma used to make me dip lemon in sugar & scrub my elbows & knees. Then she would say "baby, put you some Vaseline on your knees & elbows." I miss her 😩
Dr. Dray is so right. I'm a nurse practitioner and we have the same jars of Vaseline that Dr. Dray was holding up all over the place. It's great and we use it for everything. I use it at night on my lips.
After a skin surgery on my face my derm told me to put nothing but Vaseline on the stitches for a week. I did as she asked and I have no scar. Any fear mongering "clean beauty" might have done to me before ended then. Thanks Dr. Dray!
I have afro textured hair. My understanding of avoiding petroleum in afro hair care products is that once you put it on, it can prevent your daily hair moisturizer from getting to your hair shaft which can lead to dryness. A lot of people with afro textured hair moisturize their hair daily throughout the week and wash it once a week. So if you're using petroleum on your hair at the beginning of the week, are you sealing out moisture? I've never had any fear or concern with petroleum (vasaline) or mineral oil (baby oil) on my skin.
@Kay H .. I did the exact same thing about 1 1/2 years ago on Dr. Dray's advice and it completely changed my skin. I had done NOTHING to my skin for 53 years, and it showed! Even now I occasionally stray and try others (because it's fun to try new things), but I never get the same results. Thank you, Dr. Dray, for saving my skin!
@@gategirl66 What do you use? Please share. I started to use Cerave SA lotion for rough and bumpy skin on my thighs and arms, and my skin got so much softer and less bumpy. I want to try Eucerin with Urea for that, because it is cheaper, but we shall see if it is better.
over 90% of dermatologic creams and treatments have mineral oil in their composition... avène, bioderma, uriage, la rp... brands who do huge research on dermatology put petrolatum in majority of their products. Idk why people hate so much on mineral oil, it is great!
A "natural" beauty company in my country just wrote a super long email complaining that the government are making them put the full list of ingredients on their products by breaking down the content of what they DO put in their products. Of course that is going to work against them since they have been claiming that their products don't contain this and that, when in fact they do - just as a part of a different ingredient. And she said just what you mentioned; "Now people are gonna thing we purposely put those things in the product"...but they did, they just don't want people to know because it sounds so "scary" and "chemical"
Yes as a Flower Farmer in Colorado I use horticultural oils to control pests, mainly Neem Oil, safe for my flowers and pumpkins patch. Love Dr. D's videos!
This video is fantastic! I’m going to actually share it with my patience because you literally, and much more articulately, convey the truth about these products. And I absolutely love that you refer to petroleum jelly as your favorite if you times in the video. I don’t know if you saw the publication out of I think annals of allergy or JACI where they did a comparison of the various ointments and pet was #1. I haven’t seen any of your other videos, but I have a good feeling that you and I have the same mindset so I’m really looking forward to seeing some of the videos and incorporating the links in my patient instructions. Thank you for taking the time to do all these evidence based educational vlogs! It’s really refreshing to see a dermatologist or any healthcare professional speaking about commercial products but not on behalf of some company but just rather the science. You had me when you whipped out the tub of petroleum jelly! “Ok now I know this woman is legit” (I think the viewers reading that last comment might be thinking, “this guy is a total weirdo“ but I think you totally understand where pet advocating means i’m listening to someone who’s an evidence-based provider). I’ve only seen one video but I hope the others will also meet such high EBM standards!
You are the reason I found successful skin care that doesn't aggravate or irritate my skin. I tried Cerave because of you. Thanks for debunking the PR. My skincare routine is far simpler now.
"They used radio carbon isotope analyses and found 100% of these products did in fact have ingredients of petrochemical origin." BOOOOOOMMMMM..... roasted with science. Thanks for another informative video. 👍
The petroleum thing drives me nuts. It’s the MOST USED topical agent in the hospital- a place where evidence based practice rules. But we’re supposed to believe the clean beauty stance? Yea that makes sense 🤦♀️ Keep doing what you’re doing Dr Dray!
Short-term use in the hospital is one thing. Daily use for decades is another. It better be pretty damn pure if you’re going to do that (regardless of whether it’s natural or artificial). Keep in mind hospitals still use products with BPA… They’re not paragons.
Due to needed constant washing, my hand skin was split deep into living skin. No moisturizer helped until I used one with petrolatum. Within two days the splitting was almost healed. Edit: the product was Aveeno Eczema Therapy lotion. Amazing stuff.
I definitely fell hard for the clean beauty marketing, mostly because I try to stick to cruelty free products and they’re lumped together. I still try to buy mostly cruelty free but I refuse to fall prey to marketing traps again! Also, just in regards to petrolatum, in my experience with my sons, doctors always recommend using only petrolatum on wounds. Clearly it’s not harmful.
After learning from you about the total b.s. and bogusness of "clean, green beauty", I literally cringe when I hear someone tauting a "clean" product or "clean beauty brand". Set em straight, dear Dr. Dray!!! You have helped me to save beaucoup bucks since I stopped buying into all that clean beauty crap!!!!! I also wish skincare brands would stop putting fragrance into leave on products. That's my other pet peeve!!
Vaseline at bedtime saved my hands this past year. I had chronically dry and bloody hands and I used a lot of popular brands of hand lotion and wore gloves at night. I never would have used vaseline as my lotion of choice but started to after you recommended it. I didn’t even need the gloves. I have used it daily since I work in healthcare and wash my hands 100 times a day it seems!
I work in surgery and u r 100% right, we do use Vaseline gauze and other stuff on surgical wounds. We also use mineral oil in surgery too. People need to stop believing so much of what these companies and the media tells them. Doing your own research is the only way to go now a days! There is so many lies floating around out there through media and social media! It’s sad how bad it is!
I am with you. There are TOO many products and the makeup brands just keep coming. I wish all this research, development and marketing money was used more productively. I use three products -all recommended by you, and I get compliments on my skin daily. Bless you.
I read an article about environmentalists think they are helping the planet when they are actually harming it. We don’t need more products we need less. I’ve noticed when I simplified my skincare routine my skin has gotten a lot better.
I would love an updated Japanese sunscreen vid. I’ve seen so many changes to my favorite sunscreens. Bottles, ingredients, etc. I can’t find hada labo uv white gel anymore, skin aqua moisture gel has changed its bottles and ingredients. Kose suncut seems to have stayed the same. But an update would be awesome!!! Thanks for all you do Dr. Dray!!
They gooped petroleum on my eyes when I had brain surgery. I use Petroleum daily! Especially in the summer when I get heat rash or any kid of rash, petroleum works. I use it at night on my eyelids and lips.
Dr. Dray, thank you for yr honest, no-nonsense approach to skin care. Appreciate yr debunking the misinformation regarding petroleum jelly, etc. Two thumbs up!
I used vaseline at some point in my 20s as a makeup remover because I read about it in beauty magazines and I got these weird white bumps around my eyes. I had to stop using it and the bumps went away. Never used vaseline again. But it is interesting to know it is used widely in healthcare.
Part of the thing that pushes the whole 'all natural' maketing in skincare is what Dr Dray talks about @11:40 onwards- mineral oil derived products are associated with being common, working class or poor, where all the essential oils, exotic oils and butters are definite have a feel of luxury and 'handcraftedness' (even though these products are made in a factory) .
I think this gets overlooked so much imo. I used to be really into “clean” beauty and even when I started learning the truth about the science behind it I still hesitated to change over to products that don’t market themselves that way. Clean beauty’s marketing’s real strength is the fear that it creates but also the feeling of being “superior” in a way because it’s like you somehow know something that everyone else doesn’t and you’re healthier for it. All these plants and oils they use sound exotic which makes us assume they are somehow better only because we’re not familiar with them and they’re more expensive. There really is a lot of classism tied up with clean beauty that’s hard to see at first
@@queenbunnyfoofoo6112 Dove sensitive is wonderful. I tend to get spots on my chest in the heat and sweatiness of Summer and soap just works to kill off bacteria and prevents them, and it doesn't irritate my skin. Plus way less packaging than many of these more expensive clean beauty products!

I used to STRESS so bad about clean beauty, looking up EVERY SINGLE PRODUCT in my house. Even if the “toxic” ingredients were out to get me, I would bet the constant stress is way more damaging then whatever ingredients are in said product.

I didn’t, but I felt guilty using it and SO happy to hear it’s ok! I will let them know too! You’re so great at explaining things and appreciate you spreading your wealth of knowledge! So appreciate your videos, Dr. Dray ☀️
Fun story: When my nephew was little (3 or 4 I think), he would relentlessly pick and chew on his lips, when they were dry in winter - not understanding, that he was only making things worse, at one point even causing bleeding. And he violently refused any cream, my sister in law tried to put on him. Guess, what he finally did accept (after a lot of tears all around)? A dab of plain vaseline. I'm guessing, it was, because it's odor and tasteless. He was also an extremely picky eater at the time, so it makes sense, that he wouldn't want anything weird smelling or tasting on his lips, either. Completely resolved the problem in 2 or 3 days.
Another good tasteless one is Blistex Simple and Sensitive. Nice because it's easier to take with you and apply during the day. But, yes, vaseline is the best.
That's great but it don't work for everyone, I sufferers with dry lips for years, vaseline did nothing at all. I learnt a trick from James welsh is to use very gentle chemical exfoliant of my lips once a week and that keeps my cracked lips away, I can now use any cream to compliment that but using a cream alone never worked for me. Sorry I didn't learn it from hyram I learnt it from James welsh channel.
My son is 3 and he picks at his lips as well. The only thing he will accept with little fight is CeraVe Healing Ointment. Dramatically improves his lips, especially if I get him to use it right before he goes to sleep at night.
When my baby was born I bought these clean products and the scent was stronger than my products, and some irritated her skin. I used Vaseline and her skin was just fine. Still use it 👍
Can I just say I so appreciate you listing g the study you are talking about. That is such a pet peeve of mine when people reference sources they don't list so you can't even make your own conclusions.
I love the way you use nuance in your videos. Its hard to come by on youtube, honestly. I also appreciate that you touched on socioeconomic issues here. Far too many people see things as “this thing is good, this thing is bad” - with no room for discussing factors like marketing, anecdotal evidence, accessibility, and the fact that even though something is natural, *its not necessarily safe for you to use as a cosmetic.* Would I rather burn my skin experimenting with tea tree oil, or use vaseline without fear? Thank you for this vid!
I was looking forward to this from Shea Moisture. The owner sold it to the highest bidder and now they are gradually changing ingredients. The ordinary sadly ending the same way.
I stopped using Shea Moisture years ago, after they the changed their formula. It was widely discussed by African American beauty TH-camrs. I depended on that brand so much for my hair. I'm still struggling to find a brand that works for me.

The skin care and cosmetics industry really push the claim of dermatologist tested. There's no way dermatologists have time to test hundreds and hundreds of products. Im sure there in the office treating patients with skin conditions and other important things, skin cancers, etc.. Im sure Dr. Dray would agree this claim is not regulated and used on so many products. Maybe some products are dermatologist tested, but overall , not really. Just my opinion.
Thank you for addressing the environmental aspect of petroleum based ingredients! I was always so torn between knowing their safety and efficacy vs the environmental impact, but now I can just rest assured that by buying only what I need I’m doing the best I can
Thanks so much for this information. I am someone who has bought into some of these "clean beauty" claims. I would love to see a video on ingredients that are commonly found in skincare and haircare products that we SHOULD actually avoid. Dr Dray, I don't have much storage options for skincare other than my bathroom, and it gets really hot and humid in there, and my CE Ferulic is oxidizing fast, so I'm considering buying the gosh darn it little skincare fridge lol. I know you made a video about it, but can I just ask, what products should I absolutely AVOID putting in the fridge? Is there a type of product that can change or get worse in the little fridge?
For your bathroom trouble, you could put it in a kit n caboodle (basically a storage case) and keep that in your bedroom so the products don't go off. That's what I did in my crappy student apartment that I shared with 4 other people. No one stole anything, it was just crappy infrastructure and bad luck. We had a window and a dinky bathroom fan that never did anything to help air circulation.
You can put it literally anywhere besides the bathroom. Even on your dinner table or closet. Same goes for any medicines. Never put anything you consume or apply in the "medicine cabinet".

I studied Pharmacy and in Toxicology class our teacher said that parffins, mineral oil and silicones in cosmetics are bad for the skin as they form a film on it and that way they damage the skin barrier and can cause increasing in sensitivity and alergies.
I believe this is exactly what happened to me. I think it affects people that have naturally large pores the most and people that have hormonal imbalances. I have large pores oily but flaky skin since I was very young and used Vaseline on flaky patches for years and now skin is super sensitive and have bigger reactions to allergies. Natural barrier is completely shot and I also have permanent clogged pores that make make me look like a witch with worts. I don’t like that Dr Dray has become biased now that she finds herself a TH-cam success. It’s gone to her head. I get it’s not bad for some people but it’s really bad for others and she doesn’t recognize that.
I watched a lot of your videos but every time I try something new with time I just forget about it - retinol, oil for cleaning face, antibacterial washes for stinky areas etc... all those habits just seem to stop once the bottle is empty. EXCEPT sunscreen. Somehow I can't even think about leaving the house without sunscreen, so yup, Dr Dray you changed my mindset for good. Feel proud.
You can find Vaseline in the dollar stores as well as the Vaseline lotions too. It's cheap and works great. I use it on my lips every evening before bed. Plus after my surgeries, I was told to put it on my scars after stitches removed.

We need more of these truth.

Damn right!!
Hmm ☺
ABSOLUTELY
Then she would say "baby, put you some Vaseline on your knees & elbows." I miss her 😩
Camay is the scent of my childhood!!! Lol
Dr. Dray is so right. I'm a nurse practitioner and we have the same jars of Vaseline that Dr. Dray was holding up all over the place. It's great and we use it for everything. I use it at night on my lips.
Clean beauty: gentle soap/cleaner; French pharmacy SPF50; affordable simple moisturizer; accepting aging as a (current) inevitability.
Great question
I recommend watching Curly Chemistry she goes into detail about petroleum.
Use it after the moisturizer. I use it after I shampoo, sometimes alone or mixed with a leave-in conditioner. Works wonders🙂
Bought Cerave and Laroch Posay yesterday! Dr Dray changed my life forever in a good way!
👍🏼👍🏼
Me too! Than you, Dr. Dray!
Love Lrp and wanted to try cerave but unfortunately found out they not cruelty free, such a shame.

This made me lol hard. Thank you. 😂
The petroleum thing drives me nuts. It’s the MOST USED topical agent in the hospital- a place where evidence based practice rules. But we’re supposed to believe the clean beauty stance? Yea that makes sense 🤦♀️ Keep doing what you’re doing Dr Dray!
Exactly!
Short-term use in the hospital is one thing. Daily use for decades is another. It better be pretty damn pure if you’re going to do that (regardless of whether it’s natural or artificial). Keep in mind hospitals still use products with BPA… They’re not paragons.
The cosmetic industry and the supplement industry in the U.S. are NOT regulated.
Due to needed constant washing, my hand skin was split deep into living skin. No moisturizer helped until I used one with petrolatum. Within two days the splitting was almost healed.
Edit: the product was Aveeno Eczema Therapy lotion. Amazing stuff.
I need that...I wash my hands a *LOT* and have cracking on my hands! Not bad....but, not good either! 🍀🌸🍃🌺🌿🏵
The Aveeno Baby Eczema Therapy balm has been saving my hands this winter, I'm finally not itchy and red all season.

Thank You Thank You Thank You for this video. I get so mad hearing these BS claims from Clean Beauty brands.
I hope I can use it, I always get itchy with mineral oil or petroleum, etc :(
Does it get into your eyes though

Why on your eyes?
It's kinda surprising that the FDA doesn't try to regulate this stuff.

As a sufferer of eczema and dry dehydrated skin I will riot if petroleum jelly or mineral oils is ripped away from skincare!
Petroleum jelly came through for me when I got a horrible cut earlier this month. Now it’s all healed up with no problem 😌
I cut myself while shaving and Vaseline healed the cut in three days.
There really is a lot of classism tied up with clean beauty that’s hard to see at first
You two make some excellent points. Ponds cold cream and dove sensitive bar soap are two great products, but not "glamorous".
@@greenknitter That stuff is great....never breaks me out and I can use it anywhere on my body without a problem. Spot on about the packaging...the cardboard boxes just go right in the recycle.
@@LittleMonstr16 Totally agree. I used to think my sisters/mom didn't understand/know about the horrible products they were using. Little did I know it was me who didn't understand. At least I was smart enough to research a little and not spend wasted years on expensive, irritating products.
I used to STRESS so bad about clean beauty, looking up EVERY SINGLE PRODUCT in my house.
Even if the “toxic” ingredients were out to get me, I would bet the constant stress is way more damaging then whatever ingredients are in said product.

Fun story:
When my nephew was little (3 or 4 I think), he would relentlessly pick and chew on his lips, when they were dry in winter - not understanding, that he was only making things worse, at one point even causing bleeding.
As someone with atopic dermatitis i understand your newphew
Another good tasteless one is Blistex Simple and Sensitive. Nice because it's easier to take with you and apply during the day. But, yes, vaseline is the best.
That's great but it don't work for everyone, I sufferers with dry lips for years, vaseline did nothing at all. I learnt a trick from James welsh is to use very gentle chemical exfoliant of my lips once a week and that keeps my cracked lips away, I can now use any cream to compliment that but using a cream alone never worked for me.
Sorry I didn't learn it from hyram I learnt it from James welsh channel.

The skin care and cosmetics industry really push the claim of dermatologist tested. There's no way dermatologists have time to test hundreds and hundreds of products.
