    I used to have dark/pigmented lips. But when i started using vaseline/aquaphor last year, my lips have substantially lightened. Thanks for all your recommendations, Dr. Dray! 💞

    • @nylenyap3933
      @nylenyap3933 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nothing in those products can lighten your lips. I would look at your other skin care. Did you use a lightening agent and inadvertently put it on your lips? Aquaphor nor Vaseline have no Lightening agents therefore they are not the culprit.

    Barrier creams saved my hands during the pandemic tbh. I work in pharmacy, and the amount of times I washed my hands in a day probably quadrupled after the pandemic started. I was just using one of those little EOS pocket hand creams and it was doing very little to help me out. I started using the aquaphor baby ointment instead, just because we had some extra in the pharmacy, and it was an absolute game changer.

    I had been getting fungal acne due to having to wear a mask for a long period of time while doing intense physical activity (lots of sweating). I found that putting diaper cream on my face under my mask really helped - regular barrier cream also helps a lot, but the diaper cream is the best. I feel really weird doing it.

    I just had a really bad burn on my wrist from boiling hot water. Putting Theraplex and a compression bandage on it was a game changer. The skin was getting tight and scaly so after the blistering went away I covered it tightly and it started to heal remarkably well.
    I think a video on compression for wound healing would be a good idea because it was very hard for me to find information on and it wasn’t mentioned to me by the doctors or nurses that did the dressing at the ER or the follow up.

      I'm not a dermatologist, but my understanding is that some types of wound care are really complicated and challenging, probably too much so for a video. For years I searched for information on wound care for people with diabetes, especially compression care for diabetic foot ulcers. Maybe that topic is too complex for a video though. But some basic tips for handling everyday cuts and scrapes (and burns!) is a great idea!

These are THICK so not necessarily great for someone to whom skin care is more of a hobby. These are your heavy duty barrier creams for when you reeeeaaally need one.

    I put barrier cream on my mom's earlobe--- she's 87, has Alzheimer's, and sleeps on just one side so her skin is challenged by the pressure of the pillow. Diaper creme, works wonders! Also Andrea, can you make a video about "old person smell" (I know that sounds terrible and mean but I really don't like it. It makes me physically sick... It never used to bother me before (when it was my grandparents) but now that my mom has it I can't stand it. @@lotuscabrio2937 Anything with petrolatum in it is occlusive-it will sit on the skin and protect it. It does not cause a breakout because it doesn'tgo down into the pores, or😮 irritate acne. Whatever you put on your skin for acne, or any other skin care, will be boosted because it keeps the products from drying out, letting the skin get the full effect of any skincare or medication. There are plenty of videos where people with acne say that Vaseline (100% petrolatum) was helpful because it kept the med from drying out their skin, thus allowing the full effect. I use Cerave Healing Ointment because I use tretinoin 0.05 on my face at night.

    My body won’t tolerate most petrochemicals, so I use shea butter instead. I don’t know if it’s as effective as petrolatum, but it seems to work for me. I have a severe allergy to lanolin, which lets out a lot of skincare. With allergies, it’s important to know all of the different names for the allergen so you can find them in ingredients lists. I can’t handle salicylates either, and they seem to be in lots of skincare under many different names. Having an allergic reaction to something severely impacts my skin barrier. So I have to be very careful about what I use.

I have combination skin, oily t-zone, and I have always had flakes in the cleft of my nose, eyebrows, redness in my cheeks that suddenly appeared, including super dry, scabby, flaky skin in my ears. Seems like seborrheic dermatitis. I started using Nizoral shampoo for a face wash every 2-3 days. I also lather, take a Q-Tip, get some on there, and pass it on my ears, especially in the opening. It worked. Helps with the itch also. But if you do use this, left it on for about 3 minutes, and rinse it out with a wash rag.

    10:22 You raise a great point about barrier creams potentially blocking active ingredients from penetrating the skin. I notice in the morning, it seems like the CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser doesn't fully remove the CeraVe Healing Ointment I applied the night before. Is there a proper way to wash off these barrier creams so that sunscreens and acne products can penetrate the skin and work effectively? Should we use a different kind of cleanser when using a barrier cream?

    • @monicaduncan7109
      @monicaduncan7109 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your skin can handle it, you could use a foaming cleanser or micellar water to remove Cerave healing ointment in the morning or maybe use less so you haven’t got excess ointment on the skin in the morning. I have very dry skin (eczema) so everything is absorbed by the morning.

    • @GpD79

      @@monicaduncan7109 You know, I never know how much healing ointment to use! I feel like I always put on more than I need, because I don't like how it pulls on the skin when I try to apply it and I don't have enough. My face skin is mostly okay, except I am trying to stave off some eczema on my eyelid at the moment. I use tretinoin 0.05 at night. The only thing I use under it is hyaluronic acid, but it has to dry down a bit. Then tretinoin, which I use in gel form because I am getting adult acne, plus they leave scars. They aren't as bad as when I was a teen. When that dries down, maybe a good 15-30 minutes after, I use Cerave Healing Ointment because I have an allergy to Aquafor-it has lanolin in it. The Ointment does dry down to a nice barrier on the skin during the night, so it isn't thick when I get up in the morning. It is a barrier balm, so I double cleanse. I use Cleansing oil first (my skin is clear of balm after), and then I go over that when I rinse off the oil, with Cetaphil gentle skin cleanser. I do not use Cerave during the day, but will put a bit under my eyes, around my nose, eyebrows, and possibly my chin because I have seborrheic dermatitis, not bad but not great, either. These essentially get washed with Nizoral shampoo every other day. I do not use tretinoin in the corners of my nose because my dermatitis is bad in this area.

    I appreciate every one of your videos they are always so informative!
    I wanted to ask you...
    I use .1% tret cream (started w .025% yrs ago then increased to .05%) once a week and taking spiro 100mg daily for my hormonal jaw/chin acne. This comb has been great and im seeing the best improvement than any other opts ive done in the past.
    My questions are
    1) I'm noticing more peeling than I have with the other %s of tret. Would using cerave help with this? Ive tried the sandwich method doesnt help it.
    2) Does cerave clog pores to where it would cause more acne to appear if i use it? How often should i use it?
    3)if i do end up using cerave wouls i put that on first or my moisturizer?
    I currently use am wise a water rinse only, vitamin c serum, then vanicream lotion. PM i use cerave foaming oil cleanser, on tret nights i let my face dry then apply pea size to wholw face then vanicream moisturizing lotion (thicker one). On non tret nights i cleanse then moisturizer.
    Any suggestion would be helpful to help with this peel=(
    I have tried la roch posay double repair that didn't help even in combo w the others. Also their hydrating cleanser didn't help.

Angular cheilitis is a fungal issue too, so that being said, sometimes a skin barrier is sufficient at keeping fungal issues away without the need for anti fungal creams. So try it out and see if using a skin barrier ointment works for you. 😊

  • @catboxcleaner3532
    @catboxcleaner3532 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    In regard to the order of application to avoid negating the efficacy of products: in the evening, I use Cetaphil gentle cleanser, differin adapalene gel, Cetaphil intensive moisturizer with ceramides, followed by Medline Remedy Intensive Skin Therapy with Hydraguard-D dimethicone cream, followed by Aquafor Healing Ointment for slugging hands, face, and neck, then sleep with gloves and a hoody on to prevent rub-off onto sheets. In the mornings, I water rinse and apply the Cetaphil intensive moisturizer with ceramides, followed by the Medline Remedy Intensive Skin Therapy Hydraguard-D. I let that sink in while dressing, then return to apply Cotz Face Prime and Protect Sheer Matte mineral sunscreen, the best sunscreen I’ve ever used, followed by a dusting of baby powder to absorb shine and oils throughout the day, and Dermablend Professional setting powder. I love how elastic this allows my skin to feel, while remaining protected from elements, and addresses the sensitivity I’ve developed due to climate, hormones, aging, stress, allergies. I’m fifty and have recently become allergic to detergent and body wash fragrance; a switch to unscented detergent and Dove body wash has removed my skin rashes and itch. Even at fifty, I still have acne, hence the Differin, saving my skin, with anti-aging benefits as well! Cheers!

    Excellent topic! I just bought a barrier cream for the sandwich method with the tretinoin that I'm starting, so watching with interest! 😀 Does Xeracalm AD cream count as a barrier cream? I read creams must have actual ceramides to restore the skin and not just emollients & occlusives, so I'm confused

    • @satutoivonen9679
      @satutoivonen9679 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use the thicker, even more occlusive version of that, the balm version. These are both definitely barrier creams. Ceramides are not a must, even vaseline on its own can be considered a barrier cream. These Avène creams do have other ingredients besides just occlusives and emmolients. Mine has skin-identical ingredients like glycerin, arginine and glysine as well as vit. E, I'm pretty sure the cream version has them too.
      This balm just saved my life: I think what happened was that last month the plague virus triggered my atopic dermatitis that hasn't bothered me since childhood. Then of course winter weather came early this year. I thought I was going to loose my mind with the infernal itching. Two-three weeks of daily application of this Avène balm on my whole body and I'm complitely itch free at the moment. Can recommend.

      @@satutoivonen9679I use the baume myself, on my whole body ❤️👌🏻👌🏻😍 But wondering about the face, since I've read you need actual ceramides to help your skin (as antiaging, and so on). I'm >40 so even more crucial, as ceramides decline with age. In the skin cycling method they recommend ceramides and not just emollients / petrolatum and so on. So I'd like to know about this!

    • @satutoivonen9679
      @satutoivonen9679 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Hvitlys The research is far from conclusive on ceramides so there are as many opinions as there are skinfluencers. It's not really known whether ceramides applied topically in a cream can replenish ceramides in the skin. Some say you need a cream that has three different ceramides (there are 9 in the skin) in particular percentages for them to get into the skin. Some say they're not going to get into the skin anyway. Some say all ceramides in all creams are good for the barrier. So take your pick! 😃 I've decided not to care (I'm 40+ too). If you happen to live in Scandinavia (just looking at your handle here) a great, super thick barrier cream with ceramide 3 is Locobase Repair by a a Swedish company, Karo Pharma.
