    I have an 88 OBS LS 6.0 single cab step side, which has been painted many different colors throughout the years from previous owners. I spent countless of hours removing the layers of paint. I even changed the doors and fenders off a 98 OBS. So the truck can have a straight clean look. Black or red are the top 2 colors that these trucks are painted and so was mine. I’m taking a different approach on my build.

    • @thisoldhooptie
      @thisoldhooptie  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice, love the step sides too. Mine has been factory blue, white, green, and now black. In this case the black is just a base for a 3 stage paintjob after its all back together. I wanted it one color and had a gallon of black on the shelf. I gave purple flake a try realizing after the fact the panels need to be shot at the same time to match up. I was not using full coverage so some black showed through to get the color i wanted. I could not match that months later so here we are. I'm learning along the way and enjoying the process. Looking forward to the suspension where I'm a bit more at home. Im not a painter as you can tell 😁 👍

      @@thisoldhooptie you should check out the youtuber Bad Chad, he shows alot of good tips for body work / painting and alot of other aspects of automobiles from custom builds, to repainting etc etc. He mentions in one of his recent videos on repainting an old fiery that you want to get your base coat down first so that before your final color you have a solid backdrop so the other colors won't have a chance of popping through, and I believe he mentioned a light color. Great job, ill be doing this to my 05 silverado crew cab. What grits did you use before painting?
    I cant get a clear answer, I hear sand up to 300 but also read that 600 will give you a better finish with no scratches showing through. But I wonder if 600 will cause less adhesion. Thank you

    • @thisoldhooptie
      @thisoldhooptie  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you. I went up to 320 or 400 with the black. It's in the prep. If you get things smooth, it will look great. It also depends on what you're painting with. If you're using rattle cans, you may want a finer grit so the paint can easily hide the sanding marks. As long as you use thin enough coats and the prep is right, it will stick with 600, too. I just didn't feel the need, and it came out fine, in my opinion. Good luck with your project 👍

    I was a auto painter for 20 years. I now on occasion paint stuff in my garage. I try not to for neighbors and overspray reasons. What is the Fuji mini mite? It doesn’t look conventional like I’m used to. It looks kinda like an airless and like it doesn’t produce much overspray.

Going through converting the front grille from the 88-93 grille to a 94-98 grille at the moment, waiting on new bumper brackets before I finish up - who knew that the 94-98 trucks had longer bumper brackets for the new grille style, crazy huh?

Sitting behind a computer desk for over 30 years with a tear or three in the cuff region, I work on shoulder mobility daily to keep my shoulders from hurting. Its a long game. If your working with your door closed turn off your ac if they are in the garage like mine. As long as that is done no smell gets in the house. • @thisoldhooptie
      @thisoldhooptie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The exact info is in each painting video for the temp and humidity I was in at the time. The basics are with catalyst each coat of the base color for me is 15 to 20 min apart depending on the temp and what you use to thin the paint. Some flash off faster or slower. I use acetone and did I believe 15 min between coats at 90ish degrees with high humidity. The best way to do this is test a panel or scrap to see the time it takes to get tacky then spray another coat. 2 coats should be fine if spraying thick like I do. Hot and cold effect dry and recoat times so test in the temp you plan to paint in. Good luck 👍
