I am currently restoring a few OBS Chevy trucks. A 1992 Chevy c1500 the beat-up lowrider, a 2000 Chevy Tahoe Limited that was just never taken care of, and the 1991 ls swapped Chevy s10 from hell. I will also include other home and tech related projects as they pop up. I fly by the seat of my pants learning as I go to make these old trucks a little better then what they were.
For me its about the journey, I don't believe that something cannot be done. I just have not failed enough to do it properly. Embrace your failures, you are learning!

Rustoleum paint job with 2k clearcoat after repair.
Welcome to another episode of This Old Hooptie :)
Subscribe to the channel and follow the builds!
In todays video I repair an OBS Chevy truck rusty quarter panel. Once the metal patch is made then welded I give it new life with a spray can Rustoleum paint job covered in Spraymax 2k clearcoat from a rattle can. Every one has different goals. Mine are enjoying DIY projects and keeping my trucks looking better then they were and on the road.
Thanks for tuning in :)

When wiring in the tankless water heater, can I buy a 240v plug and wire directly to the tankless water heater? I have a 240v next to my electric water heater I am wanting to replace.
Probably not. You need to know the amperage of the tankless unit and compare that with the breaker for your current water heater. Tankless are usually higher amperage the the tanked ones. The amps go up based on the size unit for the number of sinks and showers.
Where did u get the Pry Tool kit bundle ? I've got individual pieces lying all over the place. Thanks
I have a link in the description of this video. If it's no longer active, let me know, and i will update it.
@thisoldhooptie found it..I appreciate the reply. Did the wife like the changes?
@24fieldboss she loves it. So does our youngest. It's very easy to get in with the steps. Also, they can easily see which suv is ours by finding the one with the grill. She actually chose this grill, so I was very happy to make it happen. 👍
Need this for a 2023 - would it be similar the style is so different.
Everything depends on model and year The ones this works for are listed in the description and the link to purchase. I know the sport i believe xrt and calligraphy are no good for this grill and my steps.
Do you have a failsafe in place? If that actuator fails and releases your truck might go rolling down the hill. Maybe engineer some way to lock it?
That's an interesting idea. I will look more into how the newer trucks are setup. Lucky for me, the biggest hill is a speed bump where I am. My cable was broken, and this seemed like a good fix since it has worked well on the newer vehicles. I do need to beef up the links and pins. I dont trust the ones that cone with it for long term use, very thin metal. Maybe a revision 2 in the future who knows.
Hey guys, so the parking brake broke on my 1994 obs chevy truck. I spliced in a linier actuator, making the parking brake electric controlled by a switch in the dash. I have a full video that will be posted in a couple of days
Ahhh man! Your brave doing it in your garage with some of your stuff exposed to overspray.
I did get some clear on a few things. Nothing was ruined though. Would throw a tarp or two next time it's the right thing to do 🤣
maybe your house is different then mine but as you mentioned at the end one of your intake pipes is for cold water. the first valve 8:01 is just for the hot water, if you turn that off and run the hot water it will eventually stop but the cold water will keep running, at least thats how it goes for my place.
The cold water can't run if the main valve to the house is off. But yes if you only turn off the hot water heater valve in your house the cold would still run. You need to shut the main valve outside to turn off both 👍
Another good one!! Just something about that Rustoleum!! Good tip on the cap!! Keep’em coming!!
Thanks 😁 Rustoleum is cheap and it has worked for me. That tahoe had a $500 macco paint job 2.5 years ago. The c1500 has rustolium no clear coat just hardener 2 years ago. They both sit right there. The tahoe roof is pealing same as the rest of the body. Ill stick with what works for me until it doesn't 👍
@ I am a firm believer in Rustoleum fo sho!!! Maybe in one of my next videos I’ll show you my paint shelf ….99% Rustoleum!! Can’t wait to see how it turns out!!
I have a 2022 Palisade calligraphy. There is no rocker trim like you have on your vehicle. Looks completely different. Which model do you have?
Mine is an SEL. Most parts for the exterior from what I gather are different for the calligraphy and xrt models.
@thisoldhooptie thanks for the quick reply! I'll have to do some more research into it. The running boards I purchased for about $500 have instructions that don't work with my model unfortunately.
@zippitydoowopjoe A couple more bits of info. Ebay is cheaper for some things like grills and steps. But Amazon will stand behind the return if something says it fits and then doesn't. Also Ebay no longer takes American Express who would fight for your money. Now your at the mercy of the seller. Good luck with your pali project. We love ours 👍
De humidifier would also work
At some point I need to install a mini split with dehumidifier in the wall. The crazy heat is getting old 👍
FYI: You have a nice garage. May I suggest a 10 or 12" exhaust fan. It helped me out with all my projects. I don't see a window in there but, for $200.00 complete you could have a nice ventilation. You seem like a guy 5hat could do it yourself. You look like a Florida guy. Cut the hole in your cinder blocks for the fan. Remember ti support and seal it.
I have a box fan pulling air out the other door. I turn it off when shooting video to keep the noise down.
i appreciate the imperfections and the learning process brother 💪🏾
Thank you. We must occasionally fail to succeed. Im just enjoying the process. 😁
You are getting the "milky spots" and the can spitting and sputtering cause it's not meant to be held horizontal. Cans are meant to be held vertically. Try hanging the part and spraying next time. I'm sure you'll get a much better result and experience.
Thanks for the tip. Ill give that a try when i do the other side. Has the same issues. Not going to work for the roof though, can't win them all 👍
Hey 😎
Hey bro, how is your truck doing?
@thisoldhooptie in garage for winter
hurricanes and rust ,the only 2 things bad about living on the coast ,great video.
Thank you. And lets not forget tornadoes. This last storm took out my fence and everything around it. No one was hurt and the house is fine. This is why we allow the insurance companies to rob us yearly ;)
@@thisoldhooptie i can relate ,had to clean up my place in Rockport Tx after harvey ,was an EXPERT with a chainsaw when i was done .Lol great content ,happy trails .
What size tip are you using?
1.3 tip for the black paint jobs. 1.0 for clear coats, 2.0 for the big metal purple flake. 👍
looks good
Thank you 👍
You guys have been requesting some OBS Chevy truck content. It's going to be ready in the next couple days. I am still busy on the body work on the s10 which is boring. So that will wait until it's ready for paint. We had some tornado damage, and the tahoe is wrecked, so it's time to redo the front of both the c1500 and the tahoe. C1500 is getting sanded and ready for paint. Stay tuned 😁
Can’t wait to see it! Keep us posted!!
Thanks bro! Feels good to have some free time again 😁 @dtperformance256

Question what color was your truck original ? Mine has the same color inside of your cab
Mine was blue from the factory. I dont have the paint code number so could not tell you the exact color. Check the sticker in your glove box it should have the full breakdown for your truck when built.
how are you liking the new seats?
Seats are still great. Spend the extra dollars for the larger set of springs and lumbar. Makes things comfy 👍
Thank you 🙏🏾
Good luck with your build 👍
Thanks Brother
Thank you! Good luck with your steps 👍
I’m considering a couch from this company because of the customization and being able to repair broken parts instead of purchasing a whole new couch. In the 3 years you’ve had it, how many times have you had to repair a broken piece? I saw a woman’s video about her seats breaking multiple times and slats not lining up (still in the seat area)…so that worries me. Even with a 10yr warranty I don’t want a couch that continuously breaks 😅
I have had one break, which was due to a design flaw in the arm part. I made a video on replacing it. They fixed the design issue very fast. I had new arm tops shipped and delivered a few days later. These from ehat they told me are now the standard. I have also had the little ones spill on 3 areas, which was very easy to clean up. I have the stain resistant fabric. They came off easy and went right in the wash. 2 hours later, it was as good as new. The one thing i would have changed is the depth. They now have a deeper version. Give that a test. Other than that, I'm laying on the couch as I type this, no other complaints. Good luck with the couch project 👍
Dang that color looks great 👍
Can't go wrong with purple 👍
How did you make the old side markers black?
They are new side markers with leds sold on Amazon. They work and look great. Link is in the description if you want a pair.
What engine mounts are you using?
The el cheapo special from amazon. Pretty sure they are in the description. If not let me know, some times the links go bad.
My 91 dash had an AC duct running behind the cluster. Made removing the cluster connector a PITA. Removed 2, 7mm on the back of the dash holding the AC duct and was able to get it out. Also has 2 other connections behind the dash on the lower left between the brake and hool release. I had now 7mm in the middle as mentioned in the video. Hope this helps someone. Great video that covers a lot!
Thank you for commenting. Don't forget to clean inside that duct work. The truck will smell great next time you use it. Good luck with your build 👍
@@thisoldhooptie More like a rebuild. Previous owner hacked the wiring harness so bad, basic functions like wipers didn't work. Chased wires for days and said to hell with it, I'm putting in a new harness. Thankfully the guy in getting the harness from is labeling it as he removed it .
I feel your pain. The 91 ls swapped s10 in my last few videos had zero dash electronics and all but 2 engine sensors cut to shreds. I had to figure out how to wire an engine for the first time. In the end, it was a fun project. When the engine ran, all the lights worked, and the trans shifted correctly. I felt pretty good. In the end, it's all fun and games. At least, that's how I see it.
Great video. Getting ready to pull mine in a 91 OBS. Dash was replaced by the previous owner, but the wiring behind it needs A LOT of attention. So much so, I'm planning on replacing the entire wiring harness behind the dash. Wish me luck 🤞.
Solid plan. Wiring can be a huge pain in the a$$. Get the whole thing from plug to plug and your life will be easier. Good luck, enjoy the ride 👍
Thanks a bunch! 🤙🏽
Thank you 👍
That rubber weatherstrip is the biggest PITA to put on and takes the most time to complete the install. Horrible design
Facts! From a business standpoint, i understand why they did things that way. It would cost way more to buy or make the oem weather strip. So, to save a few bucks, we do what we have to do 👍
Is your energy savings any better going from a tank to tankless?
I am sure i do save a little each month. Nothing huge, but the space savings are great 👍
How did you install the back wall carpet I got a acc carpet and not sure the proper way to stick it on I have kilmat also
The back wall carpet has 5 little plastic press fittings that hold it to the back wall. If you have a trim removal tool, you can grab them from a junk yard . Probly order them from amazon, too.
80 grit is what you started and stayed with the whole thing?
I started at 80 to get the pealing clear and any bad areas even. Then went to 120, then up to 220. Since I was covering with alot flake, that would cover any 220 scratches. If using full coverage flake this worked fine for me. Next time around when I painted things black I went up to 320 which worked out well too. I plan to repaint the flake later this year when nit so hot an humid. I figured out after the fact this type of paint job needs to be done the whole project at one time or things don't match. They look way off. Lesson learned 🤣
@@thisoldhooptie appreciate that. I’ve got a 93 4x4 that’s got the fading clear coat and couple small dents but I’m gonna sand her down myself and see what I can do with it. Painting I’ve been good at, it’s always the sanding that gets me lol
@Under_PressureSW same here. I've painted plenty of houses. That was my first try with a vehicle. Once you get it prepped right, it's smooth sailing unless you use perls or flake. That took me a couple tries. The black I did came out perfect. Definatly sand to either 320 even 400 depending on what your top coat is, spray cans or a gun. The cans are thinner so the smoother the truck the better things will come out. The gun sprays nice and thick if you mix it that way. Way easier to hide little scratches. Good luck with your project 👍
Beautiful truck brother
Thank you. Have a great day! 👍
This is the vid!!!
This is the comment 😁👍
For Rustoleum try 1:1 mix with lacquer thinner rather than acetone. It’s flows much better and you get a very flat finish
Thank you for the tip. I'll give that a try some time to compare them 👍
yo man that Jegs bed lift kit is a GAME CHANGER
For sure! Wish I had more space, some things like that and an engine stand or transmission stand are way easier than working on the floor. Long as it works, I'm good 😁
I have the same sprayer set up, what size needle (tip size) did you use in the gun?
I love it great setup! You need the tip info for the black, the purple, or the clear coat?
@@thisoldhooptiefor the black and the clear
@uscgflorida I used the 1.3 tip and got great results with both the black thinned with acetone and the speedokote clear no extra reducer. Good luck with your project 👍
@@thisoldhooptie ok, I appreciate the response man. Thanks

I do. They are well made and come with everything needed except the rivnut tool. I had my own. You can also order it from them in checkout. Good luck with your build 👍
@thisoldhooptie sounds good thanks yeah I got a 82 s10 I'm building. I'll order these door panels later
I enjoy watching your videos. How is the rebuild of the obs coming?
Thank you. 😁 I have some videos on the c1500 obs coming up soon as i have time to finish painting the s10. Going to get started on the air suspension finally. Also an electric parking break.
Run your hose over your back and down your arm. That will keep the hose away from wet paint. Good video.
Thanks for the tip 👍 I have started doing things this way after dipping the hose into a fender a year ago. That was fun 😬
Did mine yesterday came out real nice. I did knock over a can from my tool cabinet and it spray exploded like a missile all over my garage driveway. Luckily it cleans up easy with paint remover.
Nice! 👍 It's all part of the experience. I once spilled a cup of silver on the floor when loading my spray gun. I lost a quart or paint but learned a great lesson. I needed to slow down, way down. It's fun to laugh about it later. Lots of swearing back then 🤣
@@thisoldhooptie exactly what I learned as well. Big change from my vinyl floors after I added the new carpet. Redo on my stereo install with my own equipment was quoted at $900.00 did it all on my own except the head unit. Saved a total stack of cash. Thanks for the inspiration.
very nice, purple flake is a killer color.
I agree 👍
Seems to be extremely expensive.
It's not for everyone. For me, it fits the need, so it is worth the price of admission. This setup provided a smaller footprint than the old studio lights with no cables to trip over. 👍
Great father daughter video to look at as she gets older keep up the good work ❤
Thank you, I agree 👍

Hi, the link is no longer visible. Can you provide that plz
I have updated the link Thank you 👍
Are those original seats? Or re holstered. Iv never seen black interior like that before
I used vinyl and fabric spray paint to go from grey to black. Looks better black, in my opinion. A year later, I swapped out the original seats for new ones with lumbar support and better cushions. There are links in the description of each video for anything I used in a video 👍
So, how did you get the transmission to shift without having a way of knowing what PRNDL position the shifter is in? Wont it be stuck in 2nd gear without knowing what gear its in electronically?
As long as you start in park, when installing a new switch like I did on the side of the 4l60 the switch is in park too. Then each gear is picked up by the switch as you pull back the shifter. 👍
@@thisoldhooptie That cant be the case because the other connector you didnt add is the range switch section. I know because right now Im doing a 4l80e swap and Found out this transmission wont do anything cept reverse and 2nd gear default without the range feed connector wired up.
@@thisoldhooptie if you dont have the range switch, At the very least you have to wire a on/off switch on the dash to turn on for D4 when you shift into Drive on the column. To be fair I could be running into some confusion because Im using a 2000 3500 van computer and cant for the life of me figure out where to supply a tach signal to from the HEI old school distributor (one of the wires for the cam or crank sensor, no idea because no information out there). Im finding the sloppy or flat out wrong information put out there by people to be pointless. I dont understand why some put out fake or incomplete information.
I'm not a mechanic, I can only give you my experience with this truck as it was my first ls swap. When I had the original wire harness, which did have all the transmission plugs, every thing worked fine when I drove it around the block after fixing wire issues. Then I swapped to a cheap Amazon ls swap harness, which only had the one plug for the switch, and that drove fine, swapping the gears as I test drove it. I would have noticed if it was stuck in 2nd gear. I have since pulled it apart to fix the body issues. The engine and trans are out right now. What I can do is go over it when I put it all back together later this year. I followed info from this site to deal with wire issues when I was stuck. Definitely easist yo use the common swap parts and wires if possible. 👍 www.lt1swap.com/
My guess is the large round connector on the 4l60 passenger side has what it needs to allow computer control.
