We used to paint our roundy round cars with Rustoleum street stock. Cheap, looked great on the track and easy touch up. Even look pretty good from 50 feet.
I've been able to make a lot of money by NOT spending money haha. Carlee liked helping, but didn't love the dust and dirt when it came time for some body work.
Turned out awesome! 👍👍 I love these old Blazers (and Broncos too) of that era. They were serious off road machines, not just comfort riding grocery getters. I remember getting firewood with my dad in his 79 Blazer as a kid. Very nice work!!
I've done these techniques before for getting cheap but good paint jobs as well on just basic cars that don't need fancy paint. The only step I add in is throwing an couple of quarts of rustoleum clear over it flat or gloss depending on what your painting helps and on the gloss paint an good wax and buff job helps it last and protect it better as well with any paint job
@@jdbiz there's an few that rustolium offers you can get there industrial quarts of clear in semi gloss or gloss or they do provide automotive paint as well which I belive they have another type of clear just for cars. I'll look it up and get back to you on the clear but the best thing is not an catalyst but more of adding in an bit of hardner with it for durability purpose then of course people always worry about to much when if you know paint you always cut and buff at the end and that the true first line of defense for your car paint and usually you can cut out most orange peal and runs if not real bad but hopefully there's no runs
@logansmith9990 flat paint will always be less durable in my opinion unless you use an flat clear over it as it's lacking the plastics and other chemicals that surface and create the gloss finish in other paints that are gloss or semi gloss but also look into rustolium automotive line paints and or duplicolor laquar paints! Some other cheaper ways to go on paint is through Napa getting automotive paint or look for nason paint products they're fair price and you can get single stage urethane paint.

Saying that this thing is/was "crusty" is a bit much. It's in insanely good condition. As for the $50 paint job, it looks phenomenal. Nice work dude. And having your daughter help you is so amazing and definitely brought the feels. It gives me warm feelings of when I was young helping my pawpaw on his cars out in the barn.
I once painted a truck, bought nice automotive paint, hardener reducer etc. Came out beautiful Gloss Black... About 5 years later started seeing some surface cracks as if the paint kept hardening and pulling against itself. So for a paint job that might last just as long and be cheaper Id say this is a Great Alternative.
I'm having that happen on a truck we had painted professionally in 2004. Paint cracking like it had Bondo work but it didn't. Mostly in a couple areas where maybe they got the paint too thick. There is at least one run in it too. Otherwise still pretty nice. So pro paint will harden over time and crack?
In the early 80s the local hardware was going out of business. My friend bought 8 gallons of custom tinted blue rustoleum that was tinted wrong. For years afterwards every vehicle Bob had was that color including the " camper/ school bus. No matter what he happened to be driving he stood out of the crowd. At 10 feet the paint looked 👌.
Primer, it's been done for many years nothing new people, gray or black works. My grandpa showed me this 30 years ago and it does work. As you see this guy is a excellent painter with a sprayer,great job dude.👍👍👍👍
I have been using that same process with a little twist , use gloss black rustoleum and thin with acetone .Let it sit for 3 or 4 days then drag a green Scotch pad from front to back over the entire truck.Looks great alot more durable than flat black

81 C20 I rolled with the satin and it looked awesome. I only summer drove the truck, so I done the body work with drywall mud. Yup, mud. Easy to sand and the mud/primer was from work, so free. The truck did not drive in the rain much, but the paint would last the summer and rinse and repeat for the next season. Oh, put a 71 block from a LeMans, new carb and that thing would fly. Have a Duramax now, but I miss that truck.

I love these type videos. I love Rust-Oleum. It's a quality paint and gives good results when sprayed. Did my trailer last year with the same ratio and looks amazing!
@@contraband1543 $50 paint snob? It would cost you more than that to do it with rust oleum. Rust oleum does not get hard it's almost like a soft plastic which will scrape off. Dupli color is more suited for auto.
Random and rambling, but whenever I see a K5 Blazer, it brings me back to the days of living in northeast Ohio. I knew someone that had one, and rust belt winters were not kind to these. Around the entire rear wheel wells, there was 6" of....nothing. No rockers left, holes in the doors and front fenders, and even the door jambs were so rusty that the door sagged a few inches when opened---you had to lift up the door to get it to close

I painted my pickup with john deere medium gloss black 5 years ago and it still looks good. sanded it with 120 then 220 grit no primer no Bondo no bodywork washed it wiped it down with a good wax and grease remover and sprayed it. it turned out really good.
I’ve mixed it 5-2 with a cap full of Japan Drier to help it flash off and dry quicker. One part hardener to that mix also helps as you said. Just note that the hardener will also add gloss to the paint if you want that effect. Good video and good instruction, thanks.

Brother! This is refreshing to see. Im in the process of repainting my 82 El Camino the same way that you’ve done here. I just happened to be scrolling through while taking a break from sanding on it. The only difference is that im doin mine with “rattle cans”. Rustoleum makes great stuff. Anyhow….GREAT JOB ON THE K5 bro!
I'm about to redo mine. I have an 85 Elco. Didn't have any of the equipment at the time (compressor, spray gun etc...). So I roller brushed it with rustoleum satin black just to get it all one color, didn't come out half bad but after 7 years and a few spray can touch ups, it definitely needs a freshening up and a nice even coat.
Painted my car with aluminum color, mixed same as you , and best satin silver finish I have ever seen, only downside is it shows every fingerprint, until you wash it again.
Years ago I run an auto body repair shop and I had a cousin bring in his truck. He wanted it painted. No sanding. wash it down and mask it off and paint it. Well I did just that. Turned out really nice and the funny thing is it never pealed. The paint stayed on like it was factory. He drover it for a few years and traded it in for a newer truck and the paint was still fine.
Looks good I did a cheap paint job to my tercel wagon I did a full rattle can paint job and cleared it I had roughly 300 to 350 in buying primer paint and clear and it actually came out amazing I haven't even wet sanded and buffed it cause it laid down so good I see no reason to mess with it car shines awesome. It's been done for a year now sat outside all year long and so far paints holding up amazing rattle can jobs can look good just alot of people don't do the proper prep. I now have a k5 I'm working on and kicking around painting it since I do have to do some body work its a 2 ton and I haven't ever done a 2 ton paint job before
I have a bunch of old trucks that I've been wanting to do this too but didn't know if it would work with Rust-Oleum and now I know it will with the price of a paint job these days you got to get creative thank you for sharing

Jake, are you using 2k clear? I've been wanting to do a car in rustoleum or something similar, but lock it in with a good coat of 2k. It's been really hard finding tips and tricks, though. The solvents in the 2k doesn't play nice with most of this stuff. I know it's possible, though.
@@mccoma11 yes Ive used 2k clear just try to find the best gas resistant clear coat it will look good enough. I don’t have a spray gun or anything so I just buy enough cans of touch up paint or black/white/red rustoleum, then clear to go over that. I usually only do smaller projects like three wheeler tanks and works fine. Just let the paint cure for a couple weeks before you get and gas or anything on it.
Looks great, have you looked into john deeres blitz black. It has uv protection and lats down nice. I did a s10 and never paited a car with a gun before. I used a harbor fraight gun, added a regulator and a water separator and i was shocked. Its also extremely durable, you touched on scratches on flat colors. Check this out, the price is also about the same.
I got a long bed 1989 dodge D100 it’s my first project and I’m turning 16 2 months and I want it to look good for high school next year so I watched this haha!
I painted my 2000 jeep wrangler mate black and it came out awsome i did all the body work to perfect was going to paint it a cool color and went with mate black threw a gun because its a jeep and if i get future body damage ill be able to match the color buy walking into tractor supply and getting the mate black with hardner under 50$
Definitely an economic way to paint a tired looking vehicle. Many, many, many years ago I used to paint new commercial vehicles here in the U.K.. I used a “hot pot” to warm the paint up & when it touched the cool panels it would make it skin over really quickly. I don’t know if you have anything like that in the USA but it might be worth asking at your automotive paint/body materials outlet.

Did this on my Jeep grill and tailgate, minus the hardener. Has held up through four New England winters no problem.

Had an old 85 F150 I'd painted several times with left over Latex house paint. Paint got pretty thick on it.

Rust opium doesn't get hard enough. Dupli color is good.

I've seen a lot of impressive looking paint jobs done with spray cans but no one ever says how quickly they start to fade from the Sun.

John deere black? So just black then.. john deere does make some good ass paint tho. The green i know goes on like powder coating..

Very nice. I have a 93’ 2Dr Jeep Cherokee that I’m going to do with the raptor lining on it because it’s main purpose will be for hunting.
Looks great, have you looked into john deeres blitz black. It has uv protection and lats down nice. I did a s10 and never paited a car with a gun before. I used a harbor fraight gun, added a regulator and a water separator and i was shocked. Its also extremely durable, you touched on scratches on flat colors. Check this out, the price is also about the same.

A little tip if you're going to do this yourself. Don't use lacquer thinner with oil based paints, use mineral spirits.

I painted my 2000 jeep wrangler mate black and it came out awsome i did all the body work to perfect was going to paint it a cool color and went with mate black threw a gun because its a jeep and if i get future body damage ill be able to match the color buy walking into tractor supply and getting the mate black with hardner under 50$

Definitely an economic way to paint a tired looking vehicle. Many, many, many years ago I used to paint new commercial vehicles here in the U.K.. I used a “hot pot” to warm the paint up & when it touched the cool panels it would make it skin over really quickly. I don’t know if you have anything like that in the USA but it might be worth asking at your automotive paint/body materials outlet.

I’ve heard of people putting rattle cans in hot water for the same reason. Never tried it but interesting technique.
