    14:05 this is why Dooku is considered one of the best swordsmen in the Galaxy. Obi-Wan, the master of Soresu, a defensive form which has brick-wall defensive technique but weaker offensive attacks, is caught chasing Dooku across the platform, playing to Kenobi’s weakness. Anakin, a practitioner of Ataru, a strongly offensive form, with weaker defense, is caught being chased by the Count, putting him on the defensive. Dooku plays to each Jedi’s weaknesses, ensuring he’s putting Kenobi on the offensive and Skywalker on the defensive.

      @SoftisNelaris 4 ปีที่แล้ว +93

      @@Eggsecuter Anakin used a personaliszed hybrid of Djem So and Ataru built for offense. Djem So formed the core of his technique, while Ataru added some variation and helped counteract the heavy, grounded nature of Djem So. Anakin would use this technique essentially as a sophisticated sledgehammer to smash opponents defenses and beat them into submission.

    • @davidtownsend6092
      @davidtownsend6092 4 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Anakin was using djem so at this point. Not form 4. He abandoned form 4 after the fuel on geonosis. He used form 5 djem so with elements of 3 from kenobi. 2 from dooku, and parts of 7 later in life.

    • @SoftisNelaris
      @SoftisNelaris 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      @@davidtownsend6092 He was using Form V primarily on Geonosis, but the Shien variant not Djem So, while his dual wield technique was form IV based.
      He switched over his style over the course of the Clone Wars, in response to his defeat on Geonosis at the hands of Dooku. His final form at the end of the Clone Wars was an offensive hybrid style using Djem So as the base with a solid Ataru integration to counteract Djem So's grounded nature. He wouldn't really add anything more until after he was catastrophically defeated on Mustafar, where his prosthetics and experiences forced him to completely revamp his fighting approach. He continued to use Djem So as a base, but studied all 7 forms in total, keeping useful elements while discarding the rest to form a full 7-form hybrid style.

    The thing I really like about the two Naboo duels is that in Naboo I, Anakin focuses entirely on Dooku, ignoring the Magnaguards and allowing them to wreck him. In Naboo II, Anakin immediately focuses on destroying the Magnaguards so that he can face Dooku one-on-one. Much better strategy.
    Also, in at least half of these duels, Dooku talks to Anakin about how much better Obi-wan is in order to irritate him (particularly Naboo II, where Dooku, close to losing to Anakin, gives Obi-wan the credit for foiling his scheme, dismissing Anakin as a threat entirely.

I think that if Anikin had trained under Sidious as his full potential Sidious would have deliberately built flaws in the training the ensure he was always superior (That was the whole reason for giving him outdated tech in his suit. So Vader would never rival him).

      William Lockhart Nelson he could do that but that kinda seems to contradict why he picked anakin to be his apprentice since he wanted him so that one day anakin would kill him and take his place and become the most powerful sith of all time. He even was so confident that he would since he said to yoda “You will not stop me. Vader will become more powerful than either of us!” Or something along those lines. However that is my interpretation and I can fully see Sidious doing that so I am not completely disagreeing.

      Anakins Form V is a direct counter to Form II because of kinetic energy generated through ferocity and swift, powerful strikes. Dooku was fighting a bad matchup. He only survived for so long because of how skilled he was at dueling.

      @Eggsecuter 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Yearlonggiant oh yeah, it was probs his force lightning and telekinetic mastery that prolonged the inevitable. It sucks cuz I really like dooku and his style of form II. He’s so proficient that he can fight two on one, with a hand behind his back. So it’s hard for me to admit Anakin is the better duelist but alas he defeats him pretty hard. As far as I’m aware there’s no character I know that has the finesse dooku had so It bums me out knowing he lost to a hard counter. Not taking anything away from Anakin tho

    • @Fi_Sci_
      @Fi_Sci_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      R. Poe yeah not to mention how badass and intimidating of a voice he had, both in movies and clone wars. Dooku definitely had his moments to shine especially when he was able to 1v2 against the likes of kenobi and Skywalker on numerous occasions.
      He is among many of my favorite Star Wars villains, I’d say the only other dark side I knew of that handled a Lightsaber with finesse like Dooku was Maul as seen in Duel Of the fates, and perhaps his Skills with a double blade will be more prominent in the final season of Clone wars as well when he duels with Ahsoka Tano.
      We saw a lot of Anakins potential throughout the Clone wars, and we even saw how Ahsoka was someone who held him back from going over the edge at times. However we never really get to see Darth Vader’s full potential as a duelist, and the only places we truly see his talents and mastery of his forms is in the Duel with his former apprentice Ahsoka Tano.
      Other times we see Vader in combat he’s either holding back against Luke, or barely trying against characters like Ezra, Kanan Jarrus, and recently Cal Kestis as well.
      Closest thing we see to Vader’s fighting prowess is in the comics, but they don’t really go through the motions aside from just explaining what’s happening.
      If theirs one wish I have for Star Wars it’s that we finally see what Vader is truly capable of as a Duelist, no longer pulling his punches, but going all in. Who knows maybe the Vader Series being made by _Star Wars Theory_ will grant my wish, cause I just want to see Vader going full force.

      R. Poe I’m pretty sure Anakin was so powerful in Revenge of the Sith where he was even able to take down the Jedi orders greatest battle master Cin Drallig. It’s in a brief Hologram you can see where Cin Drallig leads a Jedi strike team to kill Anakin(Vader), and they were likely the one thing that would’ve kept the Jedi Temple from falling had they succeeded, but ultimately their mission had failed and as a result the Jedi Order was destroyed.

    While I typically favor your analysis videos in general Allen, I must respectfully disagree on this one. It isn't accurate to attribute Anakin's victory over Count Dooku to Dooku's own dueling abilities eroding. If you've read any of the former EU novels such as the *Revenge of the Sith* novelization or *Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader,* it's stated that by the time of ep. 3, Anakin was on the path to becoming the greatest duelist in the Jedi Order. The consensus among the High Council, even those who were his doubters, now believed it was only a matter of time before he surpassed both Mace Windu and Yoda as the Order's single greatest duelist.
    Dooku's skills with a lightsaber weren't decaying at this time as much as Anakin was now fully manifesting his Force abilities as the Chosen One after a dozen or so years of Jedi training under his belt. Anakin's advancements were coming at an exponential rate now that he was in the prime of his life, and now that he'd gained invaluable combat experience from serving on the battlefield as a frontline commander during the Clone Wars. In short, the rematch with Count Dooku came when Anakin Skywalker was at his apex as the Jedi Order's deadliest lightsaber duelist.

      Agreed. Honestly, the movies probably made Anakin a tad too powerful. What I mean is that based off his showings especially with how he decimated Dooku, I find it hard to believe that Obi-wan's and Anakin's battle was as drawn out as it was on Mustafar. I think that realistically, Anakin/Vader would've won the battle before Obi-wan was able to reach the fabled high ground. Even Obi-wan in the RotS novel was CERTAIN that he had no chance against Anakin after feeling his power. Yes, while Obi-wan was a stunning master with form 3, Anakin was just as skilled in Form V if not more so with superior physical capabilities.
      Even beyond lightsaber skills, we know that Anakin was already a fair amount stronger in the Force than Obi-wan. What makes no sense is why Anakin simply didn't blast through Kenobi's defenses with the Force and snap his neck. We saw Dooku Force choke Obi-wan with near ease, and Vader is undoubtedly stronger on Mustafar than Dooku ever was. Also, it would be the ultimate ego stroke to Anakin's new found powers to simply end his former master without ever having to ignite his lightsaber.
      All in all, I believe the situation in which Anakin lost to Obi-wan at the end makes perfect sense. However, the battle actually lasting long enough to get to that point is mind boggling.

    • @thewarner2139
      @thewarner2139 4 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      @@willcruikshank7972 RotS novel only applies to Legends, which is a completely different entity when it comes to the Mustafar duel.
      Current canon says Anakin and Obi-Wan were complete equals in RotS, both in dueling and in Force ability. We see this during their force push battle, where neither is able to overpower the other. Likewise, it's rare for anyone to resort to a direct force attack, especially in the middle of a duel, because it requires concentration and the user often risks leaving themselves vulnerable to attack.
      As for dueling, Obi-Wan trained Anakin and had the advantage of knowing his techniques like the back of his own hand, in addition to his own form III mastery, and having more combat experience than Anakin, all of it contributed to Obi-Wan's victory.

So we're going to set up a situation where you fight him. If he gets the best of you, then I'll stop the fight and he'll have passed the test. If you get the best of him, then we'll let him go, and we'll let him stew for a few more years until he's ready.' But behind it, obviously, is Palpatine's real intention: If Anakin is good enough, Anakin can kill Dooku and become Palpatine's new apprentice. But he didn't tell Dooku that."
      -Star Wars: The Making of Revenge of the Sith.

    I would have liked to see Count Dooku take Maul apart considering his vastly superior skill and power in the Force. Further Dooku was far and away a much greater strategist and tactician than Maul ever was.

    • @thewarner2139
      @thewarner2139 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Legends Dooku could've handled him. However canon Dooku wasn't as knowledgeable or skilled as his EU version. Maul showed how tactical he can be in SoD, was comparable in force ability and ranked as a better duelist.

    • @grandadmiralzaarin4962
      @grandadmiralzaarin4962 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thewarner2139 I don't find that to be the case based on the evidence we've seen, including in SoD. Firstly it was Sidious and Tyranus plan to allow Maul to escape and even succeed initially to draw out Talzin-which worked so Dooku and Grievous 'capture' and even his alliance with Maul is stated openly in the comic to be a ruse to allow Sidious and the CIS to reach Talzin. The fact Maul's strategy only serves to get all his allies eliminated and that he requires Talzin to save him just to flee does not speak of great strategic foresight or tactical thinking. While DisCan Dooku is certainly inferior to his EU counterpart, we never see any evidence fo Maul being a superior duelist to Dooku, quite the opposite in fact since Maul never really improves against Kenobi in his duels all the way up to his death in Rebels, being essentially a stagnant character in ability and thought. Even in Son of Dathomir, Maul fails to best the Jedi he encounters, but Dooku effortlessly kills his opponent with a Force pull and impalement, which is an impressive feat against an on guard Jedi master. maul by comparison only has done something similar against Satine, who was a prisoner and did not have the Force.
      We've seen Dooku repeatedly defeat Kenobi against whom Maul has never triumphed in one on one combat, that Dooku does this while almost always having to fight Anakin as well is a pretty clear indicator he is the superior duelist. Finally the only negatives we actually have stated about Dooku is from Sidious to Vader, which makes sense in context as Vader hated Dooku and Sidious always told his apprentices what they wanted to hear to better keep them in line.
      I'm not a big fan of the Son of Dathomir comic in and of itself as it had the opportunity to put Maul and Dooku into a duel but danced around the issue without actually addressing it(likely due to Maul's bizarre popularity with the fanbase and his marketability for merchandise compared to Dooku)

      @@grandadmiralzaarin4962 Maul does defeat Kenobi during his initial return in TCW, as well as forcing him and Ventress to retreat in order to stay alive. While Maul doesn't defeat anyone else of significance, he does hold his own against both Aayla and Mace, the latter of whom holds a legitimate victory over Palpatine in canon. Likewise, it is confirmed in AEYNTK that Maul is superior to Dooku in dueling, even if only slightly, so it's not up for debate. Dooku is later defeated by Quinlan Vos in Dark Disciple, along with Filoni's comments that he would have died against Hondo's pirate crew if he attempted to fight back.
      The producers in Rebels state that Obi-Wan became familiar with Maul's technique, just as Anakin did with Dooku; with their final battle on Tatooine being that of two swordmasters playing out multiple scenarios in their minds before actually making a move. During the Cylo incident, Palpatine tells Vader that Maul was a loss of potential, whereas Dooku only ever served as a tool to be used and disposed of. Canon Dooku is a completely different entity compared to Legends. He isn't nearly as formidable or dangerous, Palpatine chose him primarily for his wealth, politics and experience handling the Jedi council.

    • @grandadmiralzaarin4962
      @grandadmiralzaarin4962 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thewarner2139 I'm afraid there are several flaws and misconceptions in your analysis. Maul and Savage gang up on Kenobi in their initial encounter and manage to overpower him together, this does not show Maul as being capable of standing up to Kenobi on even ground, but shows that he is in fact an inferior duelist that requires support to contend with Kenobi-which is a pattern in every duel he has save for their first meeting on Naboo and last meeting on Tatooine in DisCan- both duels he faced Kenobi alone, he was defeated. Looking at the second claim you make on forcing Asajj and Kenobi to retreat, that duel takes place after Savage and Maul had captured(and subsequently beaten Kenobi while unconscious if you see the bruises on the Jedi when Asajj rescues him) Asajj also had to lend Kenobi a lightsaber he was unfamiliar with and fight with a single blade herself. The fact Maul and Savage were unable to kill either of them or prevent their escape again demonstrate a failure in skill, not the opposite.
      Aayla in both Legends and DisCan is not considered a gifted duelist, merely standard and has no feats of achievement against Jedi or Sith duelists to warrant particular acclaim, which again, the fact Maul is unable to finish such an inferior duelist off is proof of his lacking in this area, whereas Dooku did effortlessly finish his opponent in that same battle. Further when Maul faces Mace, he is not alone, but supported by his commandos and he quickly disengages and escapes with their help. That's not holding his own, that is fighting with support and even then disengaging under cover of others.
      Further Maul is never explicitly stated by anyone who fought him in comics, books or other media as being superior to Dooku in dueling skills, so you are actually in error there. Dooku is considered and stated in both DisCan and the EU to be on par with Mace as a duelist and able to contend with, though not defeat Yoda. Maul by contrast holds no such feats against the top tiers of the Jedi Order.
      Fioloni himself admits that he wanted to introduce a new character and put Dooku, Kenobi and Skywalker in a position they would have to cooperate. This is a classic example of a humorous episode found in many Saturday morning cartoons, regardless of whether it makes sense in universe of not. Dooku later deals with the Pyke's attacking him while also fighting Kenobi and Skywalker with almost contemptuous ease. Throughout the Dooku captured episodes it is revealed that they can use the Force in their bindings and yet Dooku only uses the Force to kill at the end of the episode. Other than levitating a key and the mind trick by Kenobi they do not use the Force simply to extend the gag of them having to work together. Further, Dooku does not(again for comedic and plot purposes in those episodes) notice his lightsaber and Anakin's are lifted from him, in spite of being inside his cloak and the Kowakian being outside his cloak. That we see Dooku use the Force to deal with similar groups of enemies later in the series with his lightsaber as just a backup further throws those episodes validity into question. Dooku's defeat in Dark Disciple comes after facing both Ventress and Vos, teaching Vos the actual ways of the Sith as his new apprentice and Vos giving in fully to the Dark Side after Dooku was worn out from the battle with them both. Aside from the obvious issues with power scaling in the new DisCan on Vos being equal to someone who can fight Kenobi and Skywalker both on even ground-who are both regarded as stronger than Vos and more talented as duelists- you have discrepancies in Ventress skill level in that novel, which again come down to plot requirements similar to Galen Marek somehow being able to beat Darth Vader and fight Palpatine in the old EU, something that in universe makes no sense the more thought that one puts into it.
      Finally as I have addressed earlier, Palpatine tells Vader what he wanted to hear for the following reasons. One, Vader hated Dooku passionately, so Palpatine always encouraged this and fed it, the same as he did whenever the Jedi Council sided against Anakin, he's telling Anakin what he wants to hear. Two, Maul was a loss, not in potential, but as a blindly obedient dog with no ambitions of his own, so Palpatine never had to be concerned about him as a threat building his own power, unlike Dooku who had the means and ability to become a viable threat and the ambition(in DisCan) to depose him. Thirdly, Vader's concern in that incident is being discarded like Dooku was, so Palpatine is telling him again, what he wants to hear, that he is different, the same thing Palpatine has done since meeting Anakin so he's not a reliable narrator in that sense.

    Okay half a painkiller, cause this is double the hands.

    Why's the Chancellor still tied up up?
    *Count Dooku:* General Kenobi, remember what I said on Geonosis, Palpatine is the Sith Lord I warned you about [Palpatines eyes go wide, he mutters "motherfucker" under his breathe - one expletive is allowed in a PG film]. Be on guard and draw your sabre [indicating Anakin's belt], he is more powerful than even Master Yoda.
    *Chancellor Palpatine:* As I said, even his words are weapons.
    *Count Dooku:* [to Kenobi's] He told Skywalker to kill me after I had surrendered and was helpless [holds up his stumps]. He wants to turn Skywalker to the dark side and make him his new Apprentice.
    *Obi-Wan Kenobi:* Is that true Anakin?
    *Anakin Skywalker:* It is my master, he told me to kill a unarmed prisoner.
    [Obi-Wan's eyes go wide in realisation…Anakin's jaw drops as it finally penetrates his thick head that he's been played all this time].
    *Count Dooku:* Finally… now can I please get some painkillers.
    *Supreme Chancellor:* [Now speaking as Darth Siddious]
    Dammit… so be it.
    [Gestures and Dooku's sabre, now holstered on Anakin's belt, flies forward. But Anakin is able to grab it in time, igniting it. Both he and Kenobi activate their own lightsabers. Darth Siddious's restraints fall away]
    *Darth Siddious:* Treason is it? No, you all died, only I managed to survive. I suppose I'll just have to settle for Ventress as my new Apprentice.
    Pity young Skywalker I had plans for you… such potential.
    [Force lightning leaps from Siddious's fingers and sends Obi-Wan flying back to be knocked senseless against a bulkhead, yet again. Siddious then turns his attention to Anakin as he has charged forward, but Anakin is able to block the Force lightning with both blades crossed. Anakin is inching slightly forward, but also being affected by glancing shocks. It's a stalemate, will Anakin be able to press ahead to strike down Siddious? Will Darth Siddious be able to overcome Anakin Skywalker with his dark power of Force lightni… _blaster bolts hit him straight in the heart]._
    *Obi-Wan Kenobi:* [throws the blaster away] Uh! So uncivilized.
