Some tablets shouldn't be cut though, especially if they're not scored; most PPIs have a special coating AFAIK. But I'm glad you've weaned off successfully. The H2 blocker is a good strategy. PPIs are seriously no joke. I am a pharmacist, and the general trend in the past decade in the profession has been to really reduce PPI use. A lot of bad effects with long-term use, as you mentioned. We definitely try to wean and switch to H2 blockers when we can.

Thank you for sharing your expertise! I did not know that most PPIs have a special coating/shouldn't be cut. I appreciate you educating me/anyone watching this video.
I am really glad to hear that the general trend in the pharmaceutical profession has been to wean/replace PPIs with H2 blockers. I was SHOCKED to have osteopenia at 24/25, I can't imagine how my body would've continued to change if I stayed on them for 15-20 years.
Thank you for this thoughtful comment! Wishing you health and safety during this uncertain time ❤️

Small bites of tiny sips of warm water, cold banana, tbsp of plain yogurt (vegan or dairy), aloe juice (if tolerated), marshmallow root (get the real dried root or powder) and or slippery elm tea (esp at night) all help with splash back and burning. If really bad try Gaviscon - Canada, UK and Europe have advanced version. Just half and only as last option. I’ve been weaning myself off PPIs after 25+ yrs. Found out from new GI physician was never the right drug for me but now caused serious issues with bones and microbiome. Slowly undoing the damage. Cheers.

    Thank you for this video🙏🏻
I’m a 47 year old male. I don’t drink, don’t eat junk food, I exercise a lot, and still have chronic gastritis; it’s such a frustrating time. I’ve always had a sensitive stomach but for some reason right now it’s hell in there.
Last night I couldn’t sleep and I said, “screw this, I’m taking a PPI” tomorrow.
But your video has given me hope again. I want to beat this and its people like you that keep the rest of us motivated. I understand there are people dying of cancer or dealing with other serious diseases that are life threatening, but this stomach issue is so frustrating.
And the most frustrating part is that doctors only give you PPI’s, as mine did, not once was I told about possible low stomach HCL, not once! And I’ve even had an endoscope but that’s the extent of the depth the docs went into. I’ve learned about what I’ve going through and why through TH-cam. What a shame! I pay thousands of dollars a year for health insurance and end up doing all the work my self 🤦🏻‍♂️
Thank you again for your testimony.

Maybe this will help someone. It’s a comment someone else made on another GERD video, but it makes more sense than anything else I’ve read!
“The stomach acid backs up into the esophagus because it is too weak. Think of it as a partially clogged pipe backing up your sink. Stronger stomach acid acts to clear the clog so that nothing backs up. Medications that block stomach acid make the problem less noticeable by reducing the irritation of the esophagus but do nothing to fix the back-up itself.
Stomach acid is typically in a pH range of 1.5 to 3.5. Fermentation occurs in somewhat acidic pH of down to 4.2 (optimal pH for fermentation is around 4.5) . So, if for whatever reason your stomach acid is either weak or simply insufficient and you consume any carbohydrates, they will ferment, building gas pressure. At some point, the esophageal sphincter will fatigue ("dysfunction") due to this pressure and act as a release valve. Now, open, stomach acid will back up into the esophagus, damaging both it and the sphincter. Now you have reflux.
So, you now have two options. The first (bad one) is to take a medication that will further weaken the stomach acid to a pH of up to 6.0. At that pH,
fermentation is either stopped or very minimal. So, no gas pressure from fermentation and the esophageal sphincter stays closed. No reflux. But, then your food passes thru the stomach, only partially digested and not sterilized. Plus, you will develop an overgrowth of H. Pylori bacteria and will end up having to take round after round of antibiotics. Also not good. However, as fermentation stops at a pH of around 4.2, if you restore the stomach acid to its initial low pH, you will prevent the fermentation issue and the lower esophageal sphincter will no longer "dysfunction". Now that the sphincter remains closed, no reflux. Now that the pH is back to normal range, food will be better digested and sterilized. And, H Pylori will remain in the stomach where it belongs.”

So happy you were able to find relief! Chronic issue can be so hard. I am an herbalist and I work with GI issues frequently. I've found in the majority of cases of GERD, acid levels are too low rather than too high. We always suggest testing this using a shot of ACV before meals. It gives people some insight about the cause, depending on if the reflux gets better or worse following the meal. Thank you for sharing your story! It's unfortunate that sometimes western medical systems don't have longevity/sustainability in mind but rather just the treatment of symptoms. Glad you found your healing

You know know how relieved I am to see this post and the comments knowing that I’m not alone and issueless doctor just recently told me I have anxiety. I’ve had this since 2014. I had all the symptoms, I woke up one morning gasping for air, later gastric pain, 2 weeks later, lumpy sensation in my throat. Thought asthma, put me on meds that didn’t work, then they said peptic ulcer, put me on the triple therapy for h pylori and coming off it was crazy even though I didn’t feel it helped much. It felt like I was reacting to evrything, like am I allergic to food? Tried to cut out food but when I saw I would even become bloated with just water I gave up. The burping was crazy and the bloating too.
Now I’m in and out of hospital and they keep prescribing PPI and since that time I took it years ago and knowing the side effects and how coming off it won’t be easy I have never taken them again, the medications would literally expire in my cupboard. I have tried ACV I feel like it helped abit but I think I overdid it and it became worse, fhen I stopped ACV and reduced it and got better. Still breathless and I’m so tired.
I’ve noticed even when I don’t eat some morning, I can suddenly have breathless ness in the afternoon and I haven’t even eaten. It’s just crazy my situation.
    What changed before this started.
I don’t know what caused it but I remember eating bread and egg and being painfully full each night and went straight to sleeping. So did that stretch my splincter? also fasted for 7 days from morning till 6pm and was my first fast and had symptoms that I didn’t know know was not normal, I had stomach pain, breathlessness and was very irritable.

Wow so happy you were able to get off the PPIs. I was also diagnosed with acid reflux when I was 16 yrs old. It was the first year they came out with a prescription medication for acid reflux. I never took birth control but I can pinpoint my trigger at a high stress situation. You might want to think back to see if you had a stress trigger when you were 16. I took the medication and my acid reflux went away. I am now 62 and I have been on and off of PPIs since I was 16, almost always after a stressful time in my life. No doctor has ever warned me that they could cause side effects. My big side effect from them is I got SIBO and had to be treated multiple times for that. I have now been on them straight for about 20 years and looking to get off of them once and for all. Wish me luck and best of luck with your other chronic condition although I just looked and see this video was 3 years ago so it is most likely over and done now. T

I was on PPI's for probably twice as long as you. I tried many times over the years to stop, always rushing back to them. This time, after a good long stretch of going from 40 mg, to 20, then 10, and finally, I tried taking something called Peptiva, mastic gum, and digestive enzymes and Pepsid AC as you, when certain things just didn't set well. I have been one month without any Omeprazole at all, and have gone some days with no Pepsid at all. An occasional Rolaid, and of course, cutting out a lot of things from my diet. I hope one day soon I will feel just normal again. It is not fun, but over a ten year span of two major fractures, plus some compression fractures in my spine, just was the last straw. I am trying my best to improve my bone density, and have freedom from now on from PPI's.

Oh how wonderful! I will follow suit and try to wean. I have taken 40mg for 14 yrs and just now at 52 I am dealing with back/spine issues and just went to doctor yesterday. I begged to get a bone density exam. I will get one of these in Nov. but wish it was today. I am convinced that I either have a fracture or pinched nerve it’s all new to me. How does a compression fracture feel? My doctor gave me muscle relaxers, phy therapy and ability to schedule for bone density. Not sure if she believed it a fracture, but says to come back in 2 mos if still in pain. Does that sound about right? I’ve been so worried.

Hello! I know it's been awhile since you posted but I was wondering how things have gone after the weaning? Any insights about definite things to do/ stay away from? I never had problems when I ate food but because I stupidly stuffed my face at night before bed and had reflux then, I put myself on Omeprazole! After a year decided to just stop eating around 530 and go off the pill( assuming I could go back to how it was). Have been having horrible symptoms ever since. Everything but water causes reflux and burning. I've been thinking of going back on Omeprazole just to wean myself off. Any suggestions? Helpful hints?

I really needed to hear this. I just tried to do a PPI wean after a year of therapy. It was a fail. I did 40 mg omeprazole alternating with 2o mg for 2 weeks and started with the breathing issue. Mine is LPR/laryngopharyngeal reflux. So I never had symptoms of GERD, it was affecting my vocal cords (edema and inflammation)/smothering sensation that occurs with this. Cough. I will try again after I get back from my UK vacation. I don't want to get into trouble with breathing etc while out of the country. I have started to eat clean, only fresh, gave up coffee, no ETOH. I will start again and see my throat specialist upon return and devise a plan. Your plan was excellent. I am a medical professional as well. Thanks for the encouragement. It does affect you mentally as well as physically. Very disheartening. But you positivity helped me. Thanks!

I have also been able to introduce foods back into my diet that caused acid reflux while I was taking a ppi. I am sure you did the right thing weaning yourself off the PPI's. I am now 80 years and startede having GERD about 15 years ago. But I had a history of GERD as a young person during my pregnancies! At first I took the PPI's that were prescribed to me, but finding out the metabolic mechanisms behind made me stop. So what do I do about the GERD? In my case, eating carbs - wheat especially - triggers it, so I don't eat bread contain wheat. If I occasionally should get an attack, I'll drink two spoonfuls of apple cider winegar mixed with some water. That helps! Drinking acid immediately makes my spfinxter close up! Like You, I had to do a lot of research into why I suddenlty had GERD. I'm 64 years old so the probability of having low stomach acid was high. I refused PPI's as I've already had a Dexa scan and have osteopenia. I had already had an endoscopy but had to pay to go privately to have my a PH test. This final test confirmed my thoughts... Hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid). I didn't have a bacteria problem. My problem was clearly age related and the fact that I was going through stressful times. I started taking betaine hydrochloride with enzyme pepsin and zinc and very quickly my indigestion stopped and so did my reflux.
I've had hair loss and asthma for years, but for the first time in years, my hair is getting thicker and I'm not getting bouts of asthma.

Hello! I noticed you said you tried cold turkey but then decided to wean. How long were you off? Here's what I did...decided I needed Omeprazole (in hindsight, because I shoved so much food in my face before bed that it had no choice but to try and come back up), after a year went cold turkey(didn't do research at all!). Massive reflux, now stopped eating after 530pm but now I have reflux after everything but water. I'm thinking of going back on ppi and weaning down thru h2 blockers and then down to nothing. Any suggestions? Insight? Would really appreciate. Thanks!

Honestly, I’m only at week 8 being (and weaning) off the Nexium. I find that when I eat nothing but meat, I don’t get any heartburn even if I eat after 7pm (which I rarely do). I did wean from 80mg to 40, then bought the OTC Nexium and went to 20, then, I finished by cutting those in half. I didn’t wait a full week on each step down. Now, I have been on Mounjaro since December 2022 and when I do eat carbs (apples, berries, or keto veg), I still get heartburn. I am fairly certain the heartburn is the Mounjaro. I had that when I tried to go up to 7.5mg (from 5mg). The heartburn was so bad this summer, I went back down to 5mg. I am weaning off of that and will be back to the 2.5 mg weekly dose through December and January. Then I will be at my goal weight. I can only recommend going carno to tame the heartburn once you’ve weaned down. @@cindyleastorch194

I decided to stop taking it due to all the symptoms of gerd I was experiencing even whilst I was still taking the ppi, I couldn't believe that I had heartburn, indigestion, acid burning my oesophagus and throat, trouble swallowing, burping and flatulence even though I was swallowing 60mg of lansoprazole on an empty stomach and not eating or drinking anything until at least one hour after I had taken the lansoprazole, I am so grateful that I saw your video and I also feel very blessed that I have not yet got anything worse than gerd, though I am not suggesting for a moment that gerd isnt bad it is!! but I could have developed even more serious health issues, thanks to you I now know why I have no energy, why I feel so tired and have all the other symptoms people get from low stomach acid, Many Many Thanks.

I went through the same thing with getting off PPI's...I had my 1st bout with GERD in 2012, Doc put me on PPI's for 90 days...within 1 week my issues moved from my Upper GI to my Lower GI. The lower GI issues lasted on & off for a couple of years and like many people who have GERD, I also developed IBS but I never went back on PPI's. Fast forward to 2021...a lot of Stress & Activity in life over the last 2 years between having a baby, COVID, work, life I became worn down, got into some bad eating habits & that retriggered the GERD. The GERD symptoms started off lighter with Excessive Saliva, Tickle in the Throat with GERD Cough onto....Heartburn, Reflux, Nausea and then that also caused a chronic Back Ache on my spine between my upper middle back & shoulder blades. I went to see the Doc, she immediately prescribed PPI's again for 30 days and I just felt like I wanted to resolve the root issue....I saw a couple of videos in relation to GERD, curing GERD, GERD back discomfort & each Doctor & Patient said the same thing over & over & over....get yourself Betaine HCL with Pepsin!! As you mentioned about the loopback effect, and within a couple of days the difference was unreal! Obviously practicing better eating habits like chewing your food better, eating slower, not eating too late or too close to bedtime, being mindful when you have certain trigger foods to not overindulge, etc....but to me the biggest thing has been adding the Betaine HCL with Pepsin. Noticed a huge difference in my entire digestive process & it also helped with my IBS.

Thank you so much for sharing your PPI story. I too have been on them for some 40 years. Like you, I've tried to get off them and I tried cold turkey like you did and had the same experience. Through the years it got so bad with my heartburn before getting on ppi's daily that I had Barretts Esopogus and at one point the scar tissue in my esophagus had scarred so badly from GERD that If I tried to swallow to big of a bite, the food would get stuck in my esophagus and when I tried to force it down with water, the water would start flowing into my lungs and I would start drowning. This would lead immediately to violent vomiting and convulsing to expel the water and food from my lungs and my stomach. I then had to have my esophagus stretched with a balloon scope to break the scar tissue to allow the food to go down. Since that time, I've been on PPI's ever since to keep that from happening again. Now that I've changed my American diet which was causal to say the least...to a Pescatarian Diet recommended by Dr./Professor Valter Longo, after I finish my current 5-day Fasting Mimicking Diet, I'm going to try your program to try and wean myself off of these damn things for once and for all. I'm on 20mg daily, so I'll start from there moving forward in cutting them down. Incidentally, my doctor last week wanted me to try taking them every other day. I did once, and you can guess what my result was. "No Cigar"! I'm truly thankful in having your post come up on my TH-cam feed. GOD Bless you young lady for giving me your idea on how to get the hell off these damn things. I think you story will also work for me. Thank you so very very much for posting this.

Everyone keeps telling me to take PPIs (which I refuse) and then I find out that heartburn actually can be caused by lack of acid, it can also be caused by tension in the diaphragm not allowing the sphincter to close all the way. I'm currently doing diaphragm breathing and exercises, and I'm also going to try to eliminate citrus and coffee out of my diet, and go from there. The diaphragm exercises alone have produced really good results just in the last 12 hours. I also have a betaine hydrochloride supplement I'm going to try as well slowly. I'm also upping D3 dose and K2. I'm sure I get enough zinc from the matcha I drink lol

I had to cut back and start drinking it as a latte and it's not as bad.... Crazy because it's so good for me but something about it drinking it as straight tea was causing my acid to spike. It's possibly the caffeine which is loosening my lower esophageal sphincter too much. Not really sure yet

Hello - an interesting discussion of your personal experience. I am wondering however if when there is a mechanical cause of GERD ie. a hiatus hernia if an approach like yours could ever work. I have the hernia and will resist an ops - which sounds to me like lots of potential future alternate probs and 'treat' with lifestyle approaches as much as possible but from that pov doubt if I can ever delete the PPIs even if bone density is an issue ...

I used this method of adding acid for about 1-1,5 years four years ago when I first got more severe issues, this after suddenly getting hypersalivation one evening which caused very frequent swallowing due to saliva filling the mouth. I did that because when I had gotten medication (I forget what it was called now) prior, it didn't do anything for me, and because various youtube channels promoted this other method and warned about prolonged PPI use. I also thought it had to do with tension or nerve damage but no doctors I've seen have taken the hypersalivation part seriously at all. I felt it made things better slowly, but towards the end of that period it got much worse at night, more like slow motion puking which would start waking me up in the middle of the night. I think what did make things better was frequent exercise and a diet change (obviously avoiding commonly mentioned triggers too) rather than ACV and such but moreso with more explosive reflux and chest pain.
Since all the doctors I've seen (6+ now) has said to use PPIs I eventually gave in and have tried a couple of cures for several months, but they haven't helped either. Recently I pretty much just use weaker stuff like novalucol, samarin and novaluzid which only helps briefly.
I've had gastroscopies (also from the other end, I forget what it's called in english, didn't show anything) and two 24h ph meter tests but for the second one which was more recently, the doctor seemed to think I was pressing the button when I wasn't having reflux (they said to press it when noticing anything and you can see your ph value in the esophagus in real time so I did whenever it got to like 5 or lower, which is often when you're frequently burping or getting reflux or heartburn). During my last visit to my surgeon though, he admitted I have a small hiatal hernia (no idea why he didn't tell me that earlier but he explained it as different doctors defining it differently - others had just said I had inflammation or lighter wounds on the LES after the gastroscopies). But he adviced against surgery because of complications and because he doesn't think it's severe enough even though I lose like 2-3h of sleep per day and am often in pain from it.
Anyway, the most recent thing I'm trying is iQoro, a small piece of plastic which you do some mouth training with (really it seems that what happens is you train muscles near the LES when you use it, as a side effect). I seems to help a little bit by day at least, having used it for 3+ months now - by that I mean I have pain around the LES instead of reflux or heartburn for some periods of the day. We'll see in 3 more as the company said you need to be using it for that long to see real effects. I'll probably suggest these h2 blockers next time I see a doctor, will probably have to explain the whole journey from the beginning to them again and not be taken seriously at first. That and how random this condition can feel at times are the most frustrating parts.
    Thanks for the video!

I find when I'm navigating my own healing that it's helpful to envision the body like a cup, and dysfunction like water. I'd argue no body is functionally perfectly all the time, and that all bodies can handle a certain amount of dysfunction without becoming symptomatic... or our cups can hold a certain amount of water without overflowing. Then, some event happens, our cups overflow, and we have symptoms that can seem totally random even though their origin has been building slowly over time. I hope you're able to get your water level back down soon!

The only way to cure Gerd if you have it is to go 16 hours fasting and that would resolve the reflux now before you go back into consuming food, you can eat normally but do not drink water afterwards for at least an hour and strictly no water during a meal, you wouldn't get reflux afterwards with the premise that you do not drink water after meal and you do not lay down.
Also, it helps if you avoid eating until your stomach is full, leave half of your stomach empty and don't drink water for an hour! if you drink after 10 minutes of a meal you will get reflux and when you have to eat a highly fatty, little bit spicy or sour food if you wanna eat something dangerous then take one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar diluted in water beforehand (ON EMPTY STOMACH) before you eat your large amount food but this is not recommended to take apple cider all the time since you don't want that to be a solution and too much unreasonable use of apc could damage your oesophagus sphincter so make sure to take a bit and dilute it in water, drink in empty stomach before a meal and strictly no water when eating and one hour after! That's the only way to not have acid backup, it's the only cure and relief! And your last resolve in the arsenal would be gargling on baking soda if the stomach acid went all the way back up which is better to be avoided altogether.

I can share my experience weaning off PPIs, if you like. I was on them for 25 years until I wised up and took control of my own health. The doctors I went to didn't know anything about weaning off of them. They just said I would be better off taking the meds the rest of my life. The poster of this video weaned off them much slower than I did. She probably did it the best way possible. I went from 2 Nexium per day to 1 per day for a couple weeks. Then went to 2 Zantac per day, and eventually 1 per day. Had trouble getting off of it completely until I stopped eating so many carbs. I used to eat a fair amount of pasta but now I am entirely grain free. Western medicine sucks. They have no interest in finding root cause for anything.

I was immediately prescribed a 40mg PPI and 20mg famotidine. After about 4 weeks I started to also have GERD symptoms and I think this is from the PPI weakening the LES. It was discovered that my LES is not closing and is loose and allows acid to escape which causes severe heart burn. I have tried to wean myself off only to end up in the ER with gastritis, rebound reflux and severe pain. I hate relying on a pill everyday and worry about the side effects. So I watch videos like this and hope I could be brave enough to one day try it again or maybe get surgery…ugh!

Unfortunately I have a small sliding hiatal hernia and was diagnosed with a small segment of Barrett’s Esophagus and was put on 20mg of Omeprazole a day…forever. I’m 63. That was a year ago. Last week I, very naively, quit the Omeprazole cold turkey because I felt like I should at least give it a try. Well, because of that mistake, I’m on 40mg of Omeprazole for the next week, if I feel better I go back to 20mg. But obviously I shouldn’t have done that without asking my doctor first. Also, if you’re having GERD that doesn’t go away with treatment, please ask your doctor for an endoscopy. I’m glad I did, because I would never had known I had Barrett’s, which there is a slight chance that it could turn to cancer if not treated.

Hi Micki! I haven't gotten a DEXA follow-up scan since the osteopenia was diagnosed, perhaps I should do that! I was hopeful that given my age/activity level, if I removed the PPIs, that my bone health would resolve on its own, but now that you've asked me I realize I should follow-up and see how I'm doing!
Before I got hurt, I practiced body-weight impact activities regularly. I do not supplement with calcium, only vitamin D currently, but I do eat a lot of seeds, fish, nuts, dark greens, and tofu pretty regularly, so I always assumed I was eating a pretty calcium-rich diet.
