    I experience my acid reflux instantly whenever I dose off to fall asleep. I would literally jump out of bed gagging. These breathing exercises have completely eliminated all of my symptoms. I do them every night 10 minutes before bedtime. I had been praying and hoping for a natural way to get rid of my agony. I thank God for you and your video!!!

    I have found that these exercises also work for anxiety driven tightness of the ribcage and diaphragm. This tightness has been causing me to have acid reflux and a fast heart beat. I am currently doing the ribcage flare breath with a chest stretch multiple times a day, each time getting 2 minutes of diaphragm stretching. This has done wonders for me. Thank you so much!

    • @tomcoombs
      @tomcoombs ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@cris822 Yeah, this might be different for other people but I honestly found the symptoms to be entirely psychological - around the time I wrote the previous comment I kept going to the doctors, they kept telling me nothing was wrong and it felt like I was helpless, but turns out I really was exacerbating the symptoms in my head; I went away for two weeks where my mind was otherwise occupied, and Ive been fine ever since - I sort of just realised one day that I was no longer experiencing these symptoms😂but these methods did help when I was experiencing them, at least it felt like it was helping. in reality though I think it was only making me focus on the 'issue' more even if it did feel like it was doing something. again tho, it's likely a different scenario for others

    Thanks for uploading this video. I’ve had silent reflux for around 6 weeks now. I went for an endoscopy and doctor found a 1cm hiatal hernia. I was advised to change to better diet, take PPIs for two months and only opt for surgery if it gets worse.
    But what you’re saying makes a lot of sense. I don’t believe that the 1cm hernia could be causing that much of an issue. I am at a PC all day and I have a history of very bad posture.

    the trick with the coffee mug is clever.
    usually one would only see the pressure applied from outside. well, that is what just the eye sees.
    but with an understanding of physics and/or the fundamentals of martial art you would know that there is an equal force coming from inside. that force is going through all the muscles and tissue that surrounds the spot.
    the buildup of that force is somewhere in the area of the shoulder, going through the elbow and hand (simplified).
    and a kind of mirrored path is inside the body going to the same spot to meet the mug. and this is the actual real massage that needs to happen inside.
    after understanding this, it is understandable, that it is a good idea as well to the same thing with the other hand to change the path inside the body where the force runs through to cover different areas to be massaged inside.
    hope that kind of thinking might help to understand what is happening here.
    thanks for the exercise idea to aid digestion issues! i will still experiment with some betaine hcl + pepsin to aid my degestion.

    Thank you for sharing this valuable information - I really think these exercises are making a difference, which is amazing! A lot of practitioners are suggesting that the valve (LES) stops functioning properly due to problems with our autonomic nervous system and a stomach that is not acidic enough - hence, the suggestion to take things like apple cider vinegar. But it sounds like the real solution is to treat the source of the problem - practicing good posture and diaphragmatic breathing techniques, and learning to manage stress.

      The idea that taking vinegar will either raise or lower stomach acid pH is a myth that just won't die. Stomach acid pH can be as low as 1.0, which is 1,000 times more acidic than 5% apple cider vinegar. Drink all the vinegar you like but it will have no effect on the stomach environment.

      @@shanesnyder7359 It sounds like your magnesium, B12, and/or calcium might be off. See if a doctor will thoroughly check them for you. Not just blood levels, but serum as well. I had those things gradually go down until I had terrible heart issues. Then my bones started deteriorating. Fomatadine is Pepcid and I don't know if you're on an SSRI or SNRI like Zoloft or Effexor or similar, but it can cause potassium and magnesium issues if you are, causing muscle spasms.
      The biggest helps for me have been cutting fat, cholesterol, and acidic foods and the occasional "orange burps" it's called. It's just orange oil capsules and it works well, surprisingly.

    I can't wait to try these. Oddly, silent reflux noticeably started for me after getting a piece of ice stuck in my throat. Some time later, I was coughing in a bad position for my stomach muscles and felt something briefly painful in my diaphragm almost like a little rip or tear. That seemed to make it all worse. I've now pulled a muscle in my rib and have had an almost constant sour taste in my mouth for over a week. I'm thinking that my muscles etc must be weak so I'm glad I found this. This may be TMI but maybe it'll give you ideas for some more videos. Any recommendations?

    Hey for the first exercise, do you first breath into your abdominal region with your nose, then breath again and redirect the air into the chest and then breath again to lift your rib cage, all without exhaling? After you are done you then slowly exhale, is that right? Moreover, do you intentionally lift your rib cage at the end or should the body do that by its own?
    And is it right to feel a slight pressure in your chest due to the excessive breathing when doing the task and being at the maximum of capacity?

    I had an endoscopy recently and was shown an image of my LES. It looked very obviously lax. Easy to see why acid is making its way to my esophagus.
    I should mention that I drive for a living and my posture is pretty lousy and I can get pretty worked up from the go-go-go nature of the job.
    Do you think that these exercises and the breathing technique could improve an already loose LES?

I had to paint the roof of my house forcing me to stand tall and breathe in. During this week, I noticed my gerd was gone. Then I had to go back to my sitting job and noticed the gerd returning. It didn't make sence why, but after watching this video it makes a lot of sense. I tried ACV which made thing unbearable at night, then I tried these exercices and it really works. Hi, will these exercises work if part of your stomach has protruded the diaphragm? Hiatus hernia?

      Thanks for the query … Try to start with the breathing exercises alone before adding the others … hope it helps - CP

    i get severe breathing difficulty when i lie down. it's only recently after two years that a doctor suggested it was caused by reflux .. anyone else have this?
    it would make many of the exercises here impractical, as it's especially bad when lying on my back.

      Thanks for your question and sorry to hear that the symptoms are worse when lying down. This is very common and as the video suggests, don't feel restricted to doing the exercises laid down - you can apply the principles in all other postures, however they may be a bit harder to get going.
      Hope that helps!

      Results vary for people but if the diaphragm is restrictive then these can help very quickly … good luck 👍🏻

    Hey Rob just wondering how many reps/sets you'd recommend of the breaths and how many times a day? Thanks!

    • @challengephysio
      @challengephysio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey Michael … thanks for the message … there’s no magic number here … in truth, most people will get most out of these techniques if they chip away at them throughout the day and break up their daily postural habits that are likely to be causing the issues.
      So go on the basis of little / few reps, as often as possible.
      Take care 👍🏻

      There’s is lots of data proving your techniques work. I read where one study showed a 95% decrease in reflux and regurgitation in patients. I’m starting your exercise today. God bless you. I will report back in two weeks and let you know how I feel
