My silent reflux is characterized by a "false breathlessness" going back sporadically for a decade. I've never had heartburn. Recently, developing acid mist going into nasal passages and mouth. Dental check today showed no GERD - type effects visible, but this latest symptoms only going on couple months. Very nervous about it.
I was diagnosed with GERD along with LPR. I stopped eating Dairy, Gluten, and Carbonated beverages for 3 months and found that my throat opened back up and reflex had been relieved. For dry throat relief and dysphagia I found that Slippery Elm suppliment and Alkalaine water provided relief. I had to stop taking my PPI's because it made my reflux worse and caused massive flair ups.
I had terrible reflux and heartburn for years, even drinking water would cause an attack!! Today I am reflux and heartburn free and what worked for me was going on a plant based diet. After about a week of being on the diet, the reflux and heartburn went away and it has never returned in the past 15 years!!
@@anoxer18 A plant based diet would be diet mostly or entirely free of animal products (meat, dairy, eggs, etc.). It works wonders for some, and not so much for others ;)
@@ConfluenceNutrition Thank You! Yes, the animal foods were entirely the cause of my heartburn and reflux not to mention kidney stones and gall bladder stones, all things that ended when I gave up meat, dairy and eggs. I also lost 80 lbs. without even trying after years of trying to lose weight and my health has never been better!
I am SO appreciative of your information and expertise! I only started experiencing inflammation in my esophagus, upper throat area, and in my stomach-- left side of my stomach AFTER I was on long-term steroids and appropriate ABX this summer, 2024, for a hard inner ear/possible mastoid infection (recurring issue, unfortunately). I ended up in ER 2x, then had a colonoscopy and upper endoscopy-- which definitely showed there was horrible irritation and inflammation. I was put on PPI, sucralfate for coating, and also H2 Blocker - famotidine (Pepcid). I realize I need to treat a root cause - yet I feel it was after the long term RX that I feel affected my gastrointestinal health and balance horribly, and caused damage. Your information was NEEDED. I am going to my Functional Health Physician soon-- to see him for nutritional repair, along with my completed DUTCH Complete testing I will manage at home, plus I plan on discussing your recommendations with him. I am sure he will be elated. Very respectfully - LS
So I ordered THe Gaviscon which I'm still waiting for - I also ordered the Reflux Gormet - which arrived. But while waiting for the Reflux Gormet - I went to the store and bought a spring mix containing spinach - So i ate that as I waiting for the products to come in and I felt that was helping a lot - Then i started taking the Reflux Gormet at night as instructions said - this is about the 5th or 6th day and I feel so so so much better. My throat has opened up - so much less pressure there - my esophagus is healing - that feel so very much better. That along with the aloa vera - that helps too. I havent felt this good in about a year! I'm just wondering - if it would be safe to have ice- cream again....no I wont tempt fate! but thank you so much - so glad I found this video - very very very helpful!
Hi there, I'm so glad you're finding relief with the Reflux gourmet! And regarding ice cream, only if you know it won't bother you. If you're not sure, do a small test to find out! Best of luck to you!
I have been taking vitamin B12 for a while, I no longer have acid reflux or terrible sinus allergies I used to have, my digestive system seems to improve as well, less bloating. Before taking vitamin B12, I also took aloe vera vitamin, but B12 seem to help improve my health.
Good to hear because I am now taking B12 and am getting tested to see if Low in it. I also have sinus allergies. That would be great if it helped with that as well.
I had been on ppIs for months. Got tired... and researched a lot online and I discovered PPIs depletes minerals in our body. So I started taking magnesium bisglycinate and B12, B1 helped relief me from reflux.
@@HMomoh-xu6xv PPI’s depleted all my minerals and vitamins, gave me fatty liver, gallstones, anxiety, depression, chest palpitations… I finally stopped taking that poison a couple months ago, changed my diet and am feeling much better already.
My LPR got so bad I had constant swallowing pain (like a cut or ulcer in my throat) for three months for EVERY swallow, with an off/on burning/throbbing throughout the day. A 'ripping' feeling when yawning or spitting, and ear aches throughout the day and night. PPIs made it worse. To fix it, I put my bed on an angle, with the head 6 inches higher, took slippery elm, Gaviscon after meals and during day, stopped coffee, alcohol, less dairy and no processed foods, less red meat, less spicy or fried foods, less acidic foods. It's been 6 months and it's slowly getting better. Throat still throbbing from time to time, but feels better than before. I could never go back to that stabbing pain when swallowing, it was a nightmare, my mental health really suffered.
@@20lounge @stevanmilenkovic8843 I am doing much better with my swallowing pain - it's basically all gone. I sometimes get a burning pain in throat or an ear ache when I wake up or during the day and it seems to correlate with when I've been eating badly (like when I have take-out or spicy food etc) for many meals in the week (or when I have coffee many times). When I'm eating clean (wholefoods, low acid foods etc) I have almost ZERO symptoms and I think if I kept this up for a good few months, I'd be well into healing - but when I start to feel a lot better for a few weeks, I just love a sneaky spicy meal or some take out or a coffee (as a reward, haha). I probably have prolonged the symptoms because of this, but my tolerance is getting much better - that is to say that I can definitely eat more trigger foods (once or twice a week) without issue. I should mention that I actually got back on PPIs for a few months (which I am now weened off) because my ENT insisted it would improve things - and I do feel it helped reduce inflammation, but it's not a good long term thing in my mind - so I slowly got off them (taking one a day, then half every day, then half every other day, then no more). Things that I really think have helped: - Elimination of trigger foods for many weeks/months (coffee, alcohol, spicy food, citrus) - Decent-sized breakfast, good lunch, but a small dinner (or no dinner apart from liquids) - Being mindful during eating (chewing food a lot, not over-eating or over-drinking any fluids during meal) - Having slippery elm tablets or Gaviscon (or any alginate) when I feel the burning start - PPI's for a limited time There's other things I'm sure I'm done which have helped but I can't think of them. Unfortunately I don't think many people will be as thorough as I have been. But I was in such pain and despair, only when I reached the bottom did I care enough to change. Reflux sounds so benign, but it's NOT, it's an ordeal. I feel for anyone who has to go through it. Also, look up Molly Pelletier. She's an acid reflux nutritionist on YT
darn got excited when you mentioned over the counter ways to help LPR. I have already been doing Gaviscon Advance, Reflux Gourmet, slippery elm, aloe vera, mushroom extract. I was so hoping for something new. I plan to try to increase the acid with betaine HCL.
I also suffer but one thing that has helped me tremendously is by following the blood type diet. I cut a lot of foods out of my diet. Two favorites were 2 cups of coffee daily and bacon probably weekly. It's worth a try. I'm blood type O. Eat Right For Your Blood Type by Dr D'Adamo. Oh, and try lowering stress, not so easy but be mindful of stress triggers. I'm going to try seaweed after each meal. I'm just reading about it today. Google 'alginate with seaweed' 08:49pm
Alakaine water along with a low acid diet. Very small meals 5xs daily. Melatonin at night. No eating 3 to 4 hours before bedtime. Wedge pillow, ginger root tea. Keep a food diary to recognize food triggers
@@Unlimited0X I can't speak for the original poster, but I'm actually taking a pretty high dose of melatonin. Most recommendations are for 3 mg. The capsules I happened to have on hand are 20 mg. I was kind of groggy at first, but now it really helps, and doesn't make me fall asleep before I'm ready.
@@Unlimited0X I use Pure Encapsulations brand. It's funny you ask that, I think I did get some dry mouth in the beginning, but not anymore. I've since learned that melatonin can be generally beneficial for people with IBS, in addition to the way it helps the tone of the lower esophageal sphincter to prevent reflux, so unless it starts causing unwanted side effects, I'm considering it a godsend for my GI tract :)
I’ve used H2 blockers, PPI, carafate and Tums to no avail for many years. I heard about apple cider vinegar and thought it was crazy to treat acid with acid and blew it off, also for years. Recently I was in so much pain I had nothing to loose. Since I started this, my reflux is in very good control. I put 2 tsp ACV, 5 drops liquid ginger, and a wedge of lemon in iced water. If I start feeling a little distress, I just take another mug. I haven’t awakened in the night with gastric contents in my mouth. In addition, I take a slippery elm lozenge before bed. I hope that helps someone
Amazing success, Carolynn. Congratulations! It's so weird, but it's true, that for some people, low acid is the problem. I'm glad you got lucky with the trial and it's helping.
Great information!!! I an so excited to listen to more of them! One share here: I have found that celery juice or just eating a stick of celery helps to calm the stomach within minutes. I use organic extra virgin coconut oil (anti microbial) to sooth throat and esophagus (or aloe juice). Sipping ginger tea with honey ( can buy powder form of ginger at Trader Joe's in tea section) Inspired to try the melatonin.
I found same with kale leaves & stalks. Might be combination of nitrates and chewing. Chewing increases production of BDNF (at least it does in rodents), in addition to release of enzymes (but I don't think they are proteases) - maybe it does other stuff we don't know about yet.
Salt was the fix for me.Apparently we need salt to make stomach acid.Low acid and the valve doesnt close. I had heartburn for 35 plus years. 4 antacid tablets a night. Noe have not needed antacid for a year with keeping up my salt intake and no food within 2--1/2 hrs. before bedtime. I was mistakenly drinking too much water and that flushed my system of salt.

Probiotics help a little, but, not nearly enough. I'm not sleeping well at all. I'm gagging and hacking thick saliva at times, constantly. Constant itchiness in and under the vocals. Constant irritation in my stomach. My doctor gave me omeprazole which made it worse. I took that for 90 days. At first it seemed to help. But my stomach was always in a state of discomfort. I stopped drinking coffee which sucked. I began drinking coffee again after the omeprazole failed. I don't smoke or drink. I'm completely stopped in my life by this. I'm too tired to all the time because no matter how long I'm in bed, I'm never rested. I'm always aware of my irritated stomach while I sleep.
Hi Dwight, that sounds uncomfortable...have you worked with a low FODMAP or low histamine diet? One of these might help identify food triggers and the mechanism that are making things worse. I have videos on my channel on both...Thanks for watching :)
@@ConfluenceNutrition I haven't, or that is, I wasn't aware of fodmat and a low histamine diet. However, I have noticed certain foods and snacks that do trigger this. I'm in a lot of discomfort at this moment and have been for days. I did send away for the product you mentioned in this video. I ve already forgotten it's name. It was the second one you mentioned after the Gaviscon advance. It's produced in California. I think it was the one you used. I'm waiting for that to arrive. I'm not positive of what foods might be triggers. I think it's possible that my after workout protein drink my be a trigger. It consists of protein powder, milk, raw eggs, some honey. My mouth, tongue, is always sour tasting and I'm constantly cleaning it as I'm about to do. I haven't been to the gym for two days, but, I'm dragging myself there tonight no matter what. I also wonder if dairy products are triggers recently.. like cottage cheese. If I catch it before it gets real bad like it is right now, I use Alka Seltzer. That really works, but only if taken "before" it gets bad. Thank you for your response. Btw, I have noticed that steamed broccoli is rather soothing on my stomach, but, only if my stomach isn't in a bad way. Like, right now, I have to eat something before I leave. It will be cereal, either Kashi wheat biscuit cereal or organic raisin bran, or cascadian farms blueberry crunch with milk and honey. @@verresmilliterres Hi Dwight, right away I can see that you have a lot of the top three inflammatory foods in your diet: gluten (wheat), dairy, and sugar...that would be a place to start...clearing these muddy waters often calms symptoms down and helps highlight the mechanism of the problem. Here's a video to explain how to do this: th-cam.com/video/51QF4G3-KBw/w-d-xo.html
I have been struggling with silent reflux and a hoarse/painful voice for thr last 5 months. I feel its made worse by my job, where I need to get on the phone at 6 am or 7 am continuously until like 10 or 11 am, often with no break. My voice gets so strained with this kind of schedule. Drinking alot of alkaline water and moving to a Mediterranean diet has helped but it comes back due to the stress of my work.
When I talk with clients all day, my voice gets croaky too. Slippery elm tea might be soothing for your throat and would be worth a try. It's a traditional remedy for a hoarse voice. Maybe aloe juice as well? Thanks for watching and sharing.
I seem to regurgitate food right after eating. Sometimes it’s worse than others. When I lay down at night my coughing is extremely bad and my breathing gets bad. My oxygen gets low and I can feel food sitting in my esophagus. This has been driving me mad for the past couple of months. I’ve had breathing issues from regurgitation for the last seven years. Doctors put me on prednisone and I’ve been on that daily now and it only helps me breathe during the day, not at night. Please help. I’ve taken slippery elm and marshmallow root nearly every night for about a year. It doesn’t really help. One of the Hallmark symptoms that I have when I cannot breathe at night is painful burping. I’ve tried everything to fix this problem. I have zero burning in my esophagus from acid. I have food that just sits in there.
Hi Alaska Wild, have you yet tried one of the alginate therapies (Reflux Gourmet, or the new one, Refluxly, or Gaviscon Advance (liquid))? If not, this directly helps prevent the refluxing in a majority of people. More info in the video.
I was diagnosed with LPR. I have low stomach not high, not enough stomach acid is unfortunately common as we age, I’m almost 60. PPIs do not help people low stomach acid so after taking it for awhile and no improvement I went to a specialist. My understanding is that LPR, like regular acid reflux or GERD is usually caused by low stomach acid and that is what needs to be corrected.
It often is, especially for older people. I have a whole separate video discussing how to increase your stomach acid: th-cam.com/video/zh28pEB6eiU/w-d-xo.html Thanks for watching!
I had LPR after getting covid 3 years ago and followed Jaime koufmanns book. I did her diet for 2 months and at the same time my doctor recommended gaviscon advance . I took it every day for the 2 months. Completely healed . It was not easy but I got my life back. When I start cheating with my diet I feel, some symptoms but I get right back on track!

Thank you for this video. I am a singer/vocal tutor and suffer from LPR which has been which affect my vocal folds. I have been on PPIs for over 10 years and now on H2. I have been diagnosed with ostopenia and would like to come off them in order that they don't block important vitamins and minerals. I have been advised by a consultant to avoid dairy, caffeine, alcohol, fizzy drinks, spicy and citrus fruit, and find it difficult to avoid some of these as they are in so many dishes. It did help for a while but, since a bad throat infection, I've found it very difficult to stick to this strictly. I shall try all you have mentioned in this video as I would dearly love to keep my singing voice for as long as I can. I’m presently trying the carnivore diet. Been battling for a year plus. Tried all sorts of things. If I’m not experiencing improvements after a month I’ll be turning to all these supplements.
Hi Aura, I like your plan of re-evaluating after a month. Most diet changes should provide a sense of "yes this is working" or "no, it's not working" after that amount of time. The supplements may help WHILE you're doing the diet, too. Keep me posted, and thanks for watching!
I have been suffering with LPR for about 6 months and diet/lifestyle changes have started to improve things. It didn't help that i used to eat a lot of spicy foods and love coffee. One thing that has helped ease the burning feeling and lump sensation in my throat is Hibiscus tea which also contains melatonin I believe. I also take vitamin D and magnesium citrate. I also take a PPI however will need to stop this soon for an endoscopy. Hopefully this will ease soon and can be unbearable at times.
My update: melatonin (3 mg) causes depression and daytime drowsiness in me EVEN when I stopped for a few weeks then only took 3 mg every other night. So…no more. I realized that the coughing, throat clearing is POST NASAL DRIP. I have just begun to treat that issue. I have been drinking Aloe Vera juice and am convinced it is helping heal acid irritation
My coughing, shortness of breath was so severe for months, the doctor told me to go off of Coffee, caffeine for 30 days and he put me on omniziprel for 30 days and it magically cured my cough. It was rally bizarre to think my large 4 cups of coffee was doing that much damage. I always thought it was just a big mug. It was difficult but I just styed home and started fasting and watching netflix and it was easier in the end to break the coffee habit.

The slippery elm helps with constipation take two I’m the morning and two at night … if you take the marshmallow in the morning then wait 2hrs after or you can take the slippery elm 2hrs after you eat.You can take the slippery elm up to 1-3 times a day 😌 it really helps especially if you’re backed up… if you’re still on medication take the slippery elm 2hrs before your meds, breakfast.. for example 7:00am slippery elm and at 9:00am your meds cause it coats your gut which doesn’t make medication work and you won’t be able to get the nutrients from your food …once your constipation gets better you can take one in the morning and one at night

You may want to look into SIBO, a tough problem caused by the ileocecal valve, since a recent research study showed 100% of Fibro patients have SIBO, and there are protocols for its treatment. Also, I've found 2 gms. of L-glutamine powder on an empty stomach at night is great for calming down an irritated stomach lining and stopping gastritis. Those of us with Fibro often have problems with all the valves in our bodies, so bile reflux should also be considered. I know how frustrating this is and wish you the best results...

I take the reflux gourmet and it really helps-especially before bed because I've often woken up with acid in my mouth and tongue pain! I've seen plenty of doctors, one of them thought I was a heavy smoker due to my throat (I never smoked), so he thinks I have gastroesophageal reflux that only occurs during the night - which might explain a lot about my throat when I wake up, and the fact I never noticed the reflux itself. It's been 3 weeks now that I take 2x Gaviscon everyday (after meal and before bed), I totally changed my food habits (no fat, no sugar, 2 bananas everyday, etc), I sleep on my back and on left side only and the chest a bit high so the acid won't go up. Result : Absolutely no change... My throat burns like hell when I wake up, and the worst part is this feeling of food stuck in my throat is still here. Even worse, I developped some tinnitus. I'm desperate and it seriously drives me crazy... I'm not sure I will be able to handle this feeling in my throat constantly for very long anymore, it's like torture 24/7. I've seen a specialist last week, and he just asked me basic stupid questions, and he doesn't think I have RGO so he didn't help me at all. He even said this feeling of food stuck in my throat is just in my head. I don't know what to do, I'm scared that since all of those years of reflux during the night, my oesophagus might get destroyed and apparently we can develop a cancer. Nothing works, docs won't help me, what can I do ?
Hi there, this sounds very frustrating and annoying :( Sometimes, that feeling of something stuck in the throat is from an immune reaction in the throat. With the Gaviscon not helping, this suggests the mechanism isn't reflux. Testing out some options that mediate your immune response is worth exploring. Antihistamines would be an example. Keep me posted.
You mentioned not working on restoring the acid until getting the other things resolved. I read that the acid in the stomach actually triggers the LES to close and with the lack of acid, there is no trigger. What are your thoughts on this? I mention this because I've already started taking Betaine HCL w/pepsin because I feel like my problem is not enough acid due to a round of antibiotics for a sinus infection. I didn't have the problem before that, except for 2 years ago following antibiotics for the same reason. That time I cured it with Melatonin. I never stopped the Melatonin, but the LPR came back. I've slowly increasing the dose because I was only taking 2mg. Too soon to see results at this point. Thanks for your video!!
Hi Diane, it's true that stomach acid helps keep the LPR closed. AND, some people have damaged inner skin from the reflux, in their stomach and esophagus, and HCL irritates things and makes things worse. Basically, you can try it and if you feel like it helps and doesn't increase irritation, then by all means, include it and continue. But if you have burning, then it's time to back off of the stomach acid and focus on healing the mucosa by stopping reflux first. Does that help?
@@annefitz7346 it really depends on the person and how they respond, but you may be right that that might be the sweet spot. I took 20 mg for a while, which really helped my reflux, but then found it was messing with my hormones, so I had to stop :(
@@annefitz7346 Do you take it several times a day or just at night before bed? I have tried all the other things but not melatonin. I didn't want to get dependent on it as in a sleep aid.
Thank you for product recommendations. I'm fairly certain I have LPR based on symptoms and all other causes have been ruled out. Let you know how it goes after I've tried Reflux Gourmet and some Melatonin etc.
I haven't been diagnosed with LPR, but I have been having severe coughing fits that happen every night. They wake me up in the middle of the night and I usually can't go back to sleep. I have not been able to get a full night of sleep for a long time. I do not get heartburn or a pain in the throat but I get sinus issues like a blocked nose and sometimes a running nose. My teeth have been having problems and I was suffering with vertigo about 10 years ago (all of these are LPR symptoms). I also find that I feel better after doing a long water fast, especially when I use alkaline water for the fast, so lots of the evidence seems to point to LPR. I decided to try a low acid diet and use alkaline water to see if the symptoms get any better. I might try the sodium alginate too, if these seem to help, it probably is LPR.
@@ConfluenceNutrition Here is the update. I did try Reflux Gourmet, it didn't help me at all. It just leaves a very salty taste in my mouth. I also did the pepsin check test. It came back positive for pepsin. I am trying a diet without any acidic food now. I cheated a bit at the beginning but over the last 4 days I was 100%. I used to use an asthma inhaler when the cough became unbearable. Over the last 3 days, I didn't use it, before that I used it every single day for months. I still have symptoms but they are milder.
@@Lovecruzin1 I still do the acid watcher diet. So far I have no more symtoms. I plan to retest for pepsin soon to see if there is still some in my saliva. If not, I will go back to my usual diet.
I started having shortness of breath during a walk one morning. The shortness of breath began to happen every time I stood up so I discussed with my PCP. PCP sent prescribed a Pulmonary Function Test and I was diagnosed with Early Restrictive Lung Disease. I went to a Pulmonary Specialist who did more test, still doing test with no conclusion. I got tired of not breathing so I went to the ER and explained my symptoms to the very young, caring, energetic ER staff. They took blood, did chest x-rays, and listed to my breathing. Their diagnosis was GERD and asthma. They gave me medication that helped me breathe, but the medication that helped most is an oral Lidocaine solution in a small bottle that only lasted a couple of days. I used a solution of alkaline water and baking soda to gargle and as a nasal spray. This helped my breathing, but upset my stomach. Last night I used only the nasal spray and woke up this morning without the nasal congestion, but still have the feeling of throat blockage which affects my breathing. The prescribed PPI medication does not work for me so I’m on TH-cam looking for solutions.
@@Polymath32 not really. It takes months to get an appointment with an ENT and even longer to see a GI specialist. I have great insurance, but it’s impossible to see any specialist without waiting months. I didn’t recognize how broken America’s is until this happened.
Hello! I’ve talked to you before about my gut issues and reflux. I was tested for h pylori my test came back negative. I did have a endoscopy they told me everything looked normal but they did notice mild gastritis. I’m not taking any ppis. What do you recommend for healing gastritis.
Hi Justine, anytime you see "itis" it means there's inflammation. So gastritis is inflammation in your stomach (gastric-gastro=stomach). Some of my favorite remedies for stomach inflammation are aloe vera juice (inner leaf juice only), DGL (chewable licorice tablets), and slippery elm powder. These are all soothing for the lining of the inner skin. I hope that helps, and thanks for your question!
@@wanguirhods265 wow, that's interesting that your reflux started after your H.pylori treatment. Sometimes the way things started are important clues for how to reverse the problem. Was your H. pylori confirmed eradicated with testing? Did you follow up your treatment with probiotics (antibiotic treatment can really affect your gut microbiome, and lead to side effects like this)?
@@ConfluenceNutrition i have the same issue with Rhods Rhods... I was diagnosed with accute gastritis secondary to h.pylory infection last month, and my only symptoms back then were nausea and loss of apetite... my GI let me undergo tripple therapy (antibiotics with PPI) for 2 weeks... After the treatment, i am now experiencing reflux, bloating, mild indigestion and discomfort in my stomach... Any advice for this? Thanks...
@@donnarciso2126 This is very common after the treatment, think of it like you have treated a burn...the worst of it's over, but there is still healing to be done, and the antibiotics can have a big impact. There are many possible reasons. The trick is to identify the mechanism behind these symptoms by choosing options in the right neighborhood. I don't know for sure, but I would guess the anti-reflux supplements i mention in this video would be super helpful, along with probiotics and an appropriate diet. If you need support with this process, this is what I teach inside my program, which is starting again on Sept 28th...would you like to connect on a call to learn more?
We have aloe Vera growing around our property in Florida. I’m wondering if I can mix the inner juice from the big thick green “spears” of our plants in a smoothie. I used it on a burn from a coil on our electric stove and it literally healed overnight.
Sodium alginate, and sodium bicarbonate is the gaviscon! The key is to reduce or to increase the acid, I am not sure what I really need! 😓thanks 😅having a hard time finding out
A very complicated issue, you need to be a detective. I was a smoker and kept getting chest infections I was treated with antibiotics and a reliever inhaler . I packed up smoking and still got infections and one day couldn’t breathe. Went straight to Drs surgery he put me on nebuliser and sent me to hospital . Same again antibiotics ,inhaler and also prednisone a steroid .went for a spirometry said I had COPD. Used different types of inhalers by this time I was so out of breath, couldn’t walk upstairs without an effort . Then they decided I had asthma and COPD and GERD .. By this time my throat has hoarseness which I thought was a side effect from inhalers . I was taking omeprazole didn’t notice anything . Im drinking apple cider vinegar and manuka honey I have noticed an improvement. I’m diagnosing myself as LPR. My Asthma and COPD has improved well sometimes not to sure if I have any of those problems .
Wow, what a story! Thank you so much for sharing your journey. THis so perfectly illustrates how important it is to consider the root causes of your symptoms before applying treatments! LPR can definitely cause shortness of breath, and breathing problems. Thanks for watching, and may your symptoms continue to improve
@@ConfluenceNutrition I've been dealing with sore throat from silent reflex for 4 months now. PPIs & Pepsid meds don't seem to be helping at all. I keep reading about people having relief from apple cider vinegar but I'm really confused because vinegar is so acidic and I'm told that acidic foods make things worse. Can you help to explain why apple cider vinegar would work? Doesn't vinegar activate the pepsin in throat which causes damage to throat membrane?
@@sandersthornburgh127 Hi Sanders, great question. Apple cider vinegar and all stomach acid support helps keep the lower esophageal sphincter closed to prevent reflux. THe trouble is, when your esophagus is raw or irritated, you're right, the acid can be irritating. It doesn't activate the pepsin, the pepsin itself is the irritant. Lately, what I've been suggesting to people is to use an alginate product (gaviscon advance, or reflux gourmet) to stop the reflux from happening, and to add stomach soothers, like slippery elm or aloe to help heal. Then you can try bringing ACV or betaine HCL on to see if that helps improve your gut health. Does that help?
@@ConfluenceNutrition Thank you so much. I ordered gaviscon advance liquid & also chewables because they were cheaper. Do you think the chewable tablets work as well as the liquid? I was reading some really good reviews for the liquid. I'm really hoping to get some relief from gaviscon because my throat and voicebox problems have been going on for over 4 months now. Have you had good results from Gaviscon?
@@sandersthornburgh127 Hi Sanders, I did have good results with the Gaviscon, but when the Reflux Gourmet became available again, I switched back to that. The chewables are not the same and don't work as well.
I took prescription meds for over a year with no relief. Quit the Rx, because why would I keep taking stuff that doesn't work? Started taking apple cider vinegar in water before each meal plus did an elimination diet, eating small portions throughout the day and not eating past 7pm. By the third day, zero reflux AND I slept through the night for the first time in a year! Am now adding foods back, one at a time, every few days, leaving the most common offenders until last. My case was pretty extreme, everything seemed to cause reflux...my sinuses even burned! I do use slippery elm supplement when symptoms are bad and also take DGL chewable tablets. Will think about adding the melatonin and L-tryptophan if i start having symptoms again. Thank you!
You're welcome, and I'm so glad you got relief! Your approach was very wise...start with simple changes and adapt and adjust based on your response. Simple things often are all we need, and are frequently overlooked. Thanks for sharing your success experience! A lot of people need to hear this!

Hi Amanda, thanks for sharing an informative video. Could you please let me know what strength of l-tryptophan and melatonin should use, duration of use and both can be taken at the same time ?
My GP wants me to take Omeprazole still for my LPR, what is your view on this? I have a distinct clicking in my throat when swallowing. Thank you for the info, I’m so worried I’ve damaged my vocal chords as have had silent reflux for years without realising along with post nasal drip. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.
Hi Angela! You and your doctor should decide together whether it's right for you. But my general opinion is that acid blockers like omeprazole are kind of just a band aid. And sometimes, they don't help reflux at all. In fact, the clinical research doesn't show it clearly helping reflux, maybe only about 50% of reflux cases. So it's worth a cautious trial, but there are likely other things going on that need to be addressed. Thanks for watching!

I tried some cabbage juice which only worked for a week. My doctor advised surgery but I wanna try to lose some weight before considering the former.
Hi Rhoda, healing from these gut challenges takes some doing, and for many of us isn't simply a matter of taking a medication. Losing weight often can help reflux, but so can eating an appropriate diet, supporting our digestive function, and some key supplements used appropriately. I have the urge to clear my throat and I‘m kinda suspicious on LPR. So I was thinking on starting the low FodMap diet aside from your other tricks. Is this diet useful for silent reflux?
Hi there, yes, it's one of the main diets I suggest in concept for digestive problems. Sometimes excess gas seems to be a trigger for people's reflux, and the low FODMAP can dial this back a bit. Just be mindful of any particular triggers for you, whether they're low FODMAP or not. Thanks for watching!

This is definitely part of the problem, and alginate may do so, but my understanding is that alginate helps prevent reflux from occuring by physically blocking the opening by forming a foam raft on top of your food. Pepsin is definitely an irritant to tissues, so preventing it from repeating into the esophagus and throat is hugely important. Thanks for watching!

Are you aware of a semi-elemental diet? Like Elemental Heal from Dr. Ruscio? This might be a good option to test out and see how you do. You can replace one or two meals a day with the elemental diet, which might give your gut a rest. Check it out.
This was really informative. I know I personally dealt with a lot of reflux due to my Gastro dysmotility and intestinal failure which weakened my entire system and due to my connective tissue disease I already had weakened teeth but the reflux made the damage especially to my molars much more severe. I can attest that even when I didn't have reflux symptoms that I wasn't aware of the damage was being done. Definitely something to not brush off if you're experiencing it because you don't want to deal with the aftermath which is much harder to treat than preventing the reflux itself. One thing I learned in this video that I thought was extremely fascinating was that the burning sensation isn't from the reflux itself but from that enzyme. I never knew that and I find that extremely fascinating. I also for my personal experience am extremely curious if that's why I stopped experiencing symptoms because my pancreas has atrophied due to my GI paralysis and I've stopped making most of my digestive enzymes. So that's something I'll have to look into for my own research just because I like to know these things since I'm such a medical nerd. Was happy to see you upload a video you look absolutely amazing. When we first saw you you looked great then as well but I have to say you look healthier than ever and just absolutely glowing and that makes me really happy to see. Sending love from the east coast 🤗💜
Oh and unfortunately I don't have anything that worked for me to improve the reflux. Since mine is really complex and I have so many overlapping diagnosis along with a connective tissue disease and damage so severe that was done from 35 years of misdiagnosis it's something that at least for now I'm kind of stuck with. If you're someone reading my comment who is frustrated because they're not getting better from something they're dealing with please remember instead of getting angry at your body feeling like it's betrayed you somehow, thank your body for continuing to carry you through the dysfunction and have you waking up every morning to face a new day. Your body never wants to work against you. It always wants to work with you. Sometimes things just break and need to be fixed or tweaked, but it's not a betrayal of your body against yourself. You're a team that works together. So thank your body every day for seeing you through the hard times when it's not working the way it should but somehow it manages to keep you going even when it's not working like it should. I promise that having that mindset may not heal you but the different perspective of it is extremely liberating.

I recently had a gastroscopy, because of a lingering cough and phlegm after a bout of acute bronchitis. I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia, and promptly prescribed a course of Peploc 40 mg, repeatable for 6 months! I have taken the Peploc for about 2 weeks now, and the symtoms are better. The cough and sputum are less on most days, and mostly in the mornings. I have heard of Gaviscon Advance, but don't know whether it's available in South Africa. I am worried that the Peploc will affect my digestion of protein and fat, as I eat HFLC. So far, digestion seems to be fine.

Great thing this video came out on my recommendation. I was having these symptoms like coughing for almost 4 months, sore throats, every now and then, voice hoarseness, something in throat specially when you swallow. Non stop clearing throat. At first I thought it was just a simple cough, then I came up to these symptoms. And now I'm heading for a check up to see if this is actually a LPR.
I went to my doctor yesterday because I keep having this recurring feeling of not being able to breath through my nose comfortably and post nasal drip. When I breath in through my nose, it feels constricted back behind my soft palate area and I feel the post nasal drip. This is very troublesome for me. My doctor said I was trying to get a sinus infection, and prescribed me a decongestant and a z-pack. I have yet to see any improvement and I have been on the z-pack for 2 days and the decongestant is doing nothing at all for me. I just recently found out about LPR, so I wanted to ask my symptoms lined up with LPR symptoms. I am truly wondering if it is a sinus infection because I do not have any runny nose, fever, headache, etc. The only thing that she noticed that lined up with the sinus infection was the difficulty breathing through nose, post nasal drip, swollen nasal passages, an enlarged turbinate, and a swollen lymph node. Also, just the fact that I have no mucus whatsoever in my outer nose and only running down the back, yet my nose feels closed off.

@@graciousmudarikwa6550 This is a difficult symptom to experience, and also a difficult symptom to stop. Very helpful video! I am 81 and reflux runs in the family. I don't want to go on PPIs again if possible so stopped eating after a lunch of soup. (I am vegan). I think that PPIs reduce nutrient availability although they worked very well when I was younger.
Hi Fleet Silverfox, I'm glad you found the video helpful...PPIs do affect nutrient availability because stomach acid helps us absorb iron, vitamin B12 and zinc. Low stomach acid also reduces our digestive secretions, which are important for absorption and digestion. And I'm glad you've found what works for you. Keep up the good work!

What is a plant base diet?
That's amazing, Joanie, this suggests somehow that animal foods were a mechanims for your symptoms. I'm glad you found relief!
@@anoxer18 A plant based diet would be diet mostly or entirely free of animal products (meat, dairy, eggs, etc.). It works wonders for some, and not so much for others ;)
@@ConfluenceNutrition Thank You! What supplements do you have to take being a vegetarian?
Hey! Did the functional medicine work?
Hi Amy, that's wonderful, keep up the good work supporting your digestion and health!
Wow, good for you for taking so much dedicated action, I'm glad you're on the mend.
hi, may i know how are you doing now?
How are you now mate?
Hey mate you here wanted to ask you few questions? About lpr i have it too
@@20lounge @stevanmilenkovic8843 I am doing much better with my swallowing pain - it's basically all gone. Things that I really think have helped:
- Elimination of trigger foods for many weeks/months (coffee, alcohol, spicy food, citrus)
- Decent-sized breakfast, good lunch, but a small dinner (or no dinner apart from liquids)
- Being mindful during eating (chewing food a lot, not over-eating or over-drinking any fluids during meal)
- Having slippery elm tablets or Gaviscon (or any alginate) when I feel the burning start
- PPI's for a limited time
There's other things I'm sure I'm done which have helped but I can't think of them.
Darn, sorry I didn't have anything new for you.
Did the betain HCL help?
Alakaine water along with a low acid diet. Very small meals 5xs daily. Melatonin at night. No eating 3 to 4 hours before bedtime. Wedge pillow, ginger root tea. Keep a food diary to recognize food triggers

How much of the alkaline water are you drinking?? And what dosage of melatonin?
@@Unlimited0X I can't speak for the original poster, but I'm actually taking a pretty high dose of melatonin. Most recommendations are for 3 mg. The capsules I happened to have on hand are 20 mg. I was kind of groggy at first, but now it really helps, and doesn't make me fall asleep before I'm ready.
@@ConfluenceNutrition what brand are you using? don’t you get dry mouth with that high of a dosage

I found same with kale leaves & stalks. Might be combination of nitrates and chewing. Chewing increases production of BDNF (at least it does in rodents), in addition to release of enzymes (but I don't think they are proteases) - maybe it does other stuff we don't know about yet.

It was the second one you mentioned after the Gaviscon advance. It's produced in California. I think it was the one you used. I'm waiting for that to arrive. Hi Cheryl, I hope this provides some new insights and helpful puzzle pieces for you. To your success!
I take the reflux gourmet and it really helps-especially before bed because I've often woken up with acid in my mouth and tongue pain! I've also tried Melatonin and for some reason it makes me itch so had to stop-really weird just generalized itching and not really any rash like an allergic reaction. L-tryptophan makes me sleepy (as you'd expect) and I did take it at night but felt kind of sluggish or hungover the next day! I might try L-tryptophan again but the alginates seem to help for now. I've taken ACV but right now it's just too irritating for me and I'm older, so would very much like to increase my stomach acid, but in a less painful way. Thank you for what you do!
You're doing really great work, keep it up! You can use less tryptophan by opening a capsule, or using in the late afternoon instead of bedtime. And if the ACV is irritating, wait until you're a little more healed to work on that. Take care!
@@ConfluenceNutrition Thank you!

I wake up every morning with my throat burning, since so many years, I don't even remember when it started. At the beggining of the year, I suddenly felt something in my throat, like a piece of food stuck here (like, it literally appeared within a second while I was drinking), and I still have it today, it never went away.
Omg find another Dr.!
Bless you!
I’m told 6 mg of melatonin for gerd
@@annefitz7346 it really depends on the person and how they respond, but you may be right that that might be the sweet spot. I took 20 mg for a while, which really helped my reflux, but then found it was messing with my hormones, so I had to stop :(

Hi BT, You're welcome, and thanks for watching! I will definitely be curious to hear how you respond to the supplements.
The reflex gourmet works beautifully for me
I haven't been diagnosed with LPR, but I have been having severe coughing fits that happen every night.
Hi Ian, your reasoning is sound...keep me posted, please.

Alginates deactivate the pepsin working in the throat. The biggest problem with LPR is the pepsine which comes up with the acid gas from the stomach.
This is definitely part of the problem, and alginate may do so, but my understanding is that alginate helps prevent reflux from occuring by physically blocking the opening by forming a foam raft on top of your food. There are several different kinds of Gaviscon Advance. Liquid peppermint and aniseed and chewable???
@@mardiedodds7562 liquid is generally preferable, and aniseed is best, especially if the peppermint is one of your reflux triggers.
Between that and the difficulty swallowing, choking in the throat feeling, fights for the number one spot, lol... but yea I don’t think anything can beat feeling like you can’t breath. ☹️
@@Versiongurl agree, it's no fun :(
Another area being impacted by LPR is the sinuses. I can’t sleep. Cannot breathe. In 2022, it got so bad that I got pneumonia.
I broke a rib coughing.
Thank you for sharing your recommendations! I’m headed tomorrow to meet with a nurse practitioner that works with functional medicine doctor and discussing my chronic esophagus reflex? And explore more about my symptoms. I’d be happy to talk to you if you wanted to chat about your class you spoke about thank you, Amanda Terry

I have gastroperis and severe reflux. I’m at the point everything I eat hurts me, severe bloating, and reflux. I’m one pantropinal and Pepsis. I CV don’t eat at night due to the amount of time it takes to digest. I am trying to cut out dairy which I think is a big problem. No spices. I’m not supposed to have raw vegetables either. And I have ugh cholesterol so I have to watch the fat. I’m ready to stop eating altogether. My stomach actually feels better empty except then I’m hungry
I promise that having that mindset may not heal you but the different perspective of it is extremely liberating.
thanks for your kind compliments and support LAS, I really appreciate you watching! It's fun to see you over here
@@las5510 This is an amazing share, thank you for writing this for my community. Our thoughts and inner space influence how we feel, and I do believe that first and foremost, we need to love the body we've been given. xo
@@las5510 that is a great outlook. I just recently got LPR pretty bad, but I’m trying to not get to down about it and try and find ways to let my body heal.
@@las5510 how long have you had the connective tissue problem? And is that what’s causing your reflux?
new Subscriber. Thanks for this valuable information. I’m looking for something to help with LPR
Thank you in advance for posting helpful videos. The ENT was not helpful except to rule out growths in my throat. I have the same symptoms that you describe for yourself
You're welcome, Deb, I'm glad it was helpful :)
PPIs are usually considered safe for short term use, but in the longer term can compromise digestion of proteins in particular. I also don't know if gaviscon is available in south africa, good luck.
Great, glad you found it useful! Thanks for watching!
Hi, yes, it's possible you have LPR and your symptoms are signs of that. The solutions I suggest in the video are often quite helpful for preventing, so I encourage you to test them out. Keep me posted!
@@ConfluenceNutrition Thanks for your reply, and I definitely will be trying them out!
You might have nasal polyps. I had this and hd to get surgery :(
@@torit8166 great, keep me posted!
@@subiyota Thanks for this suggestion and sharing your experience, a very real possibility.
I used one table spoon of organic pine nut oil and two chewable DGL 30-40 minutes before meals. My acid reflux cured in ten days
That's amazing, I've never heard of using pine nut oil...where do you find it?
@@ConfluenceNutrition hie how are you ...lm struggling with reflux....it gives me scary pains on my chest , sometimes struggle to breathe ..and was given omiflux 20 ,tensol and mayogel (antacid) please help .. specially on how to stop the chest pains
@@graciousmudarikwa6550 This is a difficult symptom to experience, and also a difficult symptom to stop. My latest thinking is that this symptom is either due to an immune response in the esophagus and may benefit from a low histamine or low fodmap diet, or it may be due to infections downstream, like SIBO, or a candida infection (I'm finding this more frequently with clients like you), so investigating for this may be warranted. The things I mention in the video may also be helpful, but there's not really a shortcut for the trial and error to figure it out. Keep me posted.
DGL?cud there be an alternate for pine nut oil?
My burning pain is in the stomach it starts when I’m hungry, twice when picking up my dog at night acid came up into my throat 😖. Yikes that was horrible. Docs solution is ppi, what if I have low acid? 🤷🏻♀️
Yea think you are starting way off base I would say look into not only what we eat but more importantly how we eat sipping drinks instead of gulping and chewing food much more often will prevent Gerd and over the counter products often will work but only in the short term they are way off natural but thanks
Hi Rema, thank you for your thoughts. It's absolutely true that we want to start with foods and behaviors to find our triggers. In my personal case, I already eat a very clean diet, and focus on these behaviors, and was still having a huge problem. I would agree that my offerings are not a root cause solution, and the Gaviscon certainly isn't natural (though the active ingredient is made from brown algae), but they can help us get there. The key is to stop the damage long enough to work on the other layers. Take care.
Seven root canals and I am finally starting to understand and tackle this problem.
Very informative and thank you so much for the links to find out more. I've been using Omeprazole 20mg daily for almost 10 years! I have looked into many different natural methods but have not really committed to any. Also been wanting to start a low acid diet but I just cannot commit to that either. Will keep going through this journey to find the right fit!
Great, Jose, I'm glad you feel like you have some options to work with. Take care and keep me posted!
How is it working
If your throat was burning again after Gaviscon how do you stop the reflux?
One the an ENT doctor recommend to me is simply to raise the head of your bed 4-5 inches, so that you're sleeping at a slight incline.
Betaine HCL, Plant Enzymes & Apple Cider Vinegar capsules, along with intermittent fasting has helped improve my GERD. It’s not all gone, I still get flare ups but definitely better then it was before. I’ve managed with those supplements to wean myself off PPI. And you’re right, the initial “weaning off” period was HELL😂🤣. I kid you not but the end results are worth it.
Hi Air, I'm glad to hear that you're feeling better, and that these simple options are helping you. Keep up the good work!
I’ve been using the same routine and it’s helped me a great deal. I would say my GERD is completely gone but I did catch it fairly early but I haven’t taken an antacid in nearly 2 years while doing this.
@@bobmester3475 Great work, Bob, I'm happy it's helped you!
@@marymoro6218 I’m sure ACV will help but for me I had to go to Betaine HCL capsules with every meal. For me about 3g of betaine HCL per large meal is good and has really helped me. There is also a good book by Dr. Wright, “Why Stomach Acid is Good For You” that is a helpful resource. Hope that helps..
@@marymoro6218 Hi Mary, it might. We never know if something we choose to do will help or not. So we try carefully, starting low and slow, and assess. Then adapt what you do based on your approach. Thanks for watching!
Hi Amanda, I had another question if you could offer any advise - I am taking slippery elm + DGL in capsule form in the mornings, I also take an ACV drink in the morning (couple hours after), do you think I could just pour the slippery elm + DGL powders into my ACV drink and consume them that way?
Hi there, I wouldn't directly mix them, but might suggest using the ACV drink not long after the slippery elm and DGL, like within 15-30 minutes.
