I love that design! I've worked with metal for years but never jewelry. My uncle and I modify custom cars, Harleys, trucks, homes ect. This looks like fun! I love the designs. Usually I just etch what we want with a dremel or acidic chemicals. We're all crafts men and women in the family. It's fun creating personal items that reflects ones self. It's so much more rewarding seeing the beautiful results of your hard work, especially if it's for someone dear to you. To me, all of the pieces we created together in our family felt like it will always be a part of us, even after we're gone. The house our family built together is a constant reminder.
I probably missed this contest because I don’t know how long this has been up, but I’m glad I’m finally seeing the face behind the name I’ve seen so much and excited about learning from you! I’m just starting jewelry making and doing some PMC among other things like learning to solder and manipulate metal. I’m 75, so you never get too old to learn and start something new! Thanks for being a teacher!
I found the cupcake holders and took it to class. All the jewelers wanted some. They were from a mm amazon. It was pre covid. classes finally are starting this Feb. I'm so glad I found your Utube channel. Thank you.
I have learned so many new techniques/skills watching your tutorials. I consider myself to be an intermediate jewelry designer (btw I am 64 years old & love what I do!) who enjoys learning new things. Thank you for sharing your talent (and positive energy).
I loved the cupcake liner ideas. I have lots of new ideas about texturing. Now all I need to go with those ideas is a rolling mill. I have lots of questions about everything in metal as a retired woodworking teacher it's all new to me. I could ask enough questions for your Friday segment to keep you busy until you retire. I think whatever you call your Friday segment will be fine. Name is not nearly as important as content. The fact that you even ask is impressive.
I'd definitely watch a Friday segment - You explain techniques so well and I go back to your videos to brush up before giving something a try. I love the lace texture you got on that metal - I'll have to pick some up and give it a try...great tip!
❤ the texture! I know you did a video on how to use your rolling Mill, but I was wondering if you could give some feedback as to which one to buy when on a budget or at least narrow a few down?
Hello Melissa - Thank you for your very clear and easy-to-follow videos. I recently met the idea of using cupcake wrappers to give texture and your video made an excellent follow-up and "reminder of what to do". I particularly like the idea of using the heavy watercolour paper as padding when feeding stuff through the rolling mill and your way of making sure that the pressure of the mill wasn't so great it distorted the metal was just great. I have been fiddling with the numbers on the top dials up to now and what a pain that is!
I have a cricut and a program called cuts a lot...draw, scan, cut....unlimited designs! thank you for this video, it really gives me a lot to think about!
Melissa you are totally Amazing..you just keep getting more and more knowledgeable about what you do ..lol and I still envy your work room the most ! Thanks for sharing what you learn and do ..ive watched you for a long time now and your gift of teaching touches al of us with new insights of metal working
What a great idea! I love tips that lead you to cross over into another medium. I would never have thought to use paper to texture metal! Thank you, Melissa.
Melissa, you sure get my creative juices flowing! My comment is since I don't have a rolling mill I'm going to try to use the cupcake papers and see if i can get an impression with my Big Kick! Wish me luck! I love a challenge. Your work is amazing!
Great idea, I will try to see if I can see and cut a pattern like that on thick stock paper using my silhouette portrait machine instead, also I can create my own pattern this way.
thank you thank you...finally got my Durston rolling mill but a bit afraid to use it...after saving up so long, don't want to damage it! I am going to look at Amazon for the cupcake folders now! You are so generous to share your expertise
Have fun. You will love it. There is a huge list of links to the wrappers in the video description. I tried to find the smallest packs available. Some you have to buy over 100 of them.
I love texturing with my rolling mill. I would never have guessed such a fine imprint would be given by such a thin piece of paper. I'm off to experiment. Thanks for the inspiration!
Fantastic video, Melissa! I noticed that the cuff seemed to lengthen while rolling. My question is this: would it not be better to print the metal first and then cut out the blank? Just asking.... Cheers! Denny
I really appreciate all of the information that you share with us - I especially enjoy the hydraulic press videos. My question today is about econo rolliong mills - I have a small inexpensive mill and I am very new to the process. I have not had success with getting an impression - what are the advantages to purchasing a more expensive mill - do they give better results easier or will any mill give good results if the process is done properly? Thanks June
I've not seen the cupcake wrappers before. I don't bake, so I don't even go in that section of the craft stores. Now I may have to spend more time looking around and thinking...would this item work in a rolling mill or hydraulic press? Apparently just about anything will work in one or the other. I love you videos and tutorials. You make everything easy to understand. Thank you for all the info you include. FUNdamental Fridays or maybe Friday Fun Metal FAQs.
Okay, Melissa, you said you wanted questions :-) My question is how do I set a cabochon stone onto a curved ring? Step bezel??? And by the way, thanks for the cupcake wrapper links. What an innovative way to texturize with the rolling mill.
Melissa do you see a problem with using a spray adhesive to help prevent things from shifting? If you spray and let it sit for a few minutes before putting items together it's a temporary adhesive (like post its). I've used the adhesive for other things but not to attach paper to metal.
love your videos! Thank you for all your free tips! Could you possibly answer more detailed questions about setting up the acetylene torch. like showing the regulator and which to get, any special attachments, settings on regulator, type of fittings and hose, etc…. I have one, but feel intimidated about setting it up safely. anything special to do when turning it and off? Also, do you use ventilation when soldering or filing metals? what do you suggest? thank you!! Would also love to see more videos on using gallery wire carefully :)
I liked how you did the cupcake design for your bracelet. I bought booney doon plates which were expensive. Question: Does the guage of the metal make a difference in choosing your type of design? I have noticed at times if I have to do additional work on the metal, the design can diminish in texture. Am I doing something wrong?
Went to Michaels this morning looking for cupcake wrappers. They were all out. The number available online (100 average) is way more than I'll ever use. Too bad there isn't a "variety pack" available. Yes, very interested in being in the "giveaway" Melissa. Thank you for all your videos.
Love this ! I wanted to try something new with my rolling mill to use for my jewelry business . Using the cupcake wrappers I can make Cuffs, Earrings and all kinds of jewelry and have Beautiful jewelry impressions . Thanks so much !
Thanks for the video and the idea of using the cupcake wrappers. I have never heard of cupcake wrappers. Will you be doing a video on etching sometime in the future?
Very nice video Thank You. I was just wondering how you got the flare/shape on your Holiday spider bracelet? Also I hope you don't mind another question. I have a couple of bangle bracelets they are domed in shape, slightly beveled inwards, moderately thin, with a slight floral etching. I can squeeze my right hand thru and get them on, then they fit perfectly. This squeezing thru proses is not fun, lol. So question is; can I resize these 2 bracelets just a smidge'? (Ok sorry several ? May arise here). With out losing the etching, beveled edges, or dome to the bracelets? Might you be willing to show us/me how in a video? If not the exact bracelet just the resizing of any bracelet? I am ok if I have lose something on the bracelet in order to be able to wear them more. As they are gorgeous and I love them. Note: They are separate bracelets, but as individual bracelet have been joined with Solder.
Great video! Do you always cut out your shape before texturing in the rolling mill? I've been afraid it would stretch the metal, so I've textured the metal then cut out. Thanks so much!
Melissa, I love your video's. You teach in such a way so the information is understood, even by a novice. I don't have a rolling mill or hydraulic press, yet, so even a hammering, do's and don't's type video would be good. How to care for and best hammer's to own for all purpose use. And, are there other ways are there to apply texture to metals? Thanks so much. How about Friday Weekly Wrapup?
Thanks so much Melissa! As a new owner of a Pepe' 130mm rolling mill, I'm Loving your video on cupcake wrappers and the rolling mill and I'm looking forward to viewing your other videos! Will cross my fingers for your giveaway! :) Thanks for all the info and the time you put into sharing your knowledge!
Question: the Pepe tools rolling mill..... is the combination rollers flat spot large enough to do a decent size for flat? I don't want to regret purchasing the combo for the size of the flat area. But I like the option of square and round wire. I'm so confused oh master, can you help? Lol argh😬
For those of us that do not have a rolling mill, do you have suggestions for the cake wrapper bracelet using a hydraulic press? Your tips and tricks are so helpful in reducing my learning curve. Thank you.
Unless you have really thin metal, the cupcake wrappers aren't going to work in the HP. But there are some beautiful texture plates that are metal. I would try those as you will have better success.
Thank you, Melissa, for this video. I am always looking for new ways to texture metal, and these designs are wonderful. My question: I just moved and my studio will be in my basement. I have an EZ torch (propane) but I'm worried about using it in my basement. What is the best torch/fuel system for that location?
Love using the rolling mill and always get excited to see what comes out the other side 😊. I've never tried cupcake wrappers but now will for sure. I always enjoy your videos and tips. I wanted to ask your recommendation on purchasing stakes/ hammers for forming cuff bracelets. I don't have any at this point and $$ is a consideration. I know it can be quite an investment so what is one or two to start with? FYI Friday is my suggestion for your new segment. Thanks Melissa.
i love this - i just (finally!) was able to buy a rolling mill and i'm so excited. i saw that someone mentioned a studio tour - if you haven't already done that i would love to see it. i am also also interested in learning more about forming, especially anticlastic, etc, for cuffs. tips that go beyond the basic technique, recommended tools, and all that!
Nice clear and useful video as usual, Melissa. Thanks. I'm really interested in getting better at two things right now...getting a good impression all the time with my rolling mill instead of sometimes, and making good jump rings as well. I'd love to see a video on either topic. (I know you have several on the rolling mill, but I see I'm not the only one struggling a bit...)
I was wondering how easy and how to put a hole thru a bracelet to put a charm on it with an O ring. I just started making jewelry today actually and came across your channel love how u make the impressions with the cupcake holder
There are actually a couple of great tools for adding holes on pieces. I have a 3- and 4-hold punch that are my go-to. They are listed on my shop at www.kcjewelbox.com. I also have a 2-hold punch that works well. In addition there are a number of hole punching pliers and even drill bits used in a flexshaft, dremel or drill press that would accomplish this task.
Melissa, thank you so much for sharing all your wonderful tips. Might I ask what kind of rolling mill you are using. I have an economy one that I have used for more years than I like to admit but would like to invest in a better one. Thanks bunches and keep on keeping on.
where do you purchase your metals? my kids are all grown and I finally have the time to express my creativity, however I no longer know where to get product at a reasonable price. right now I'm doing alot of wire weaving, but I would love to start doing stamping, and also start working with other forms of metal. I love what you've done with the cupcakes liner and I'm also see alot of leaves out of sheet metal. I'm so excited to be doing what always brought me happiness, and I look forward to seeing more of your video's. Thanks Kimberly
Melissa, I work with vintage silverplate silverware and just got a Pepe and was wondering if i would get a good impression, have you ever used silverware?
I've just received my roller in the mail. part of the rollers are flat and the other part is grooved. I do not have any instructions, so if you could direct me to videos you have created for this machine, I would much appreciate it. I am not sure how it feels pressure wise. I have brass, copper, and stainless steel round wire. Very thick. What should I do in order to experiment. What should I attempt to make first, Your help is so very much appreciated.
Lady if you were beside me, i'd give you a big hug just to say thank you very much!! Wow!...I have loads of ideas based from your tutorials that has me very excited. Thanks again, good health to you. Greetings from across that big span of water from Ireland!.
heardashot that is such a wonderful compliment. Thank you. I am going to be in your neck of the world next year. Well, it is Scotland, but closer to you than I ever have been. Lol.
@@MelissaMuir Wow!. The queen of jewelry making has replied!!. Thank you so much Melissa!. That sounds very exciting. I hope your trip to the land of the Scots is rewarding and provides loads of stimilus. One day, you will visit Ireland and the Emerald Isle awaits and looks forward. Land of Celts & Scholars. The celtic world is my stimilus for my blacksmithing where I am setting up shop for Celtic jewelry. I have presented my 6 year old daughter Sarah with a little button press as part of encouragement to have her make things with her hands. The kid is so excited! We watch your videos and learn. So again, thank you for being a role model, an influencer and guide for those with that seed of creativity!! God bless and one day i'll have the pleasure of shaking your hand and hey, even give you that hug!! Take care dear.
I just obtained a Grizzly model T21320 rolling mill (in a shed...) and this was a great tutorial! What would you suggest to get the grooves antiqued? Thank you for your video! watching more!
How about 'Follow-up Fridays"? Love the patterns. I wish I had a rolling mill. I sometimes use embossing folders in my sizzix big shot machine with thin gauges of annealed metal (like 26 ga for earrings) and it works great! But it does damage the folders a bit, and I like to use them for my paper crafting too.
Great video - thanks! Doesn't it stretch the piece, whenever you pass it through the mill? I've always been told to add the pattern before cutting the shape got that reason.
So cool! I love your videos. They are so informative. This question was asked below, but I also want to know what your very favorite tool is. Thank you!
I clean it from time to time. It is hard to keep it from doing it. You can use renaissance wax, clear coat or protectaclear but I have found they still don’t always do the job perfectly
I am totally new to this can you direct me on a starter kit of sorts to begin using metals,, I have been making jewelry pieces with polymer clay but I'm so drawn to Copper and metal pieces!
Hi Melissa, Been a fan for a while and am still learning from pros like yourself. I feel that soldering was the biggest challenge for me.I don't have a rolling mill yet I see that you have a Potter press and was wondering if you could get about same result with that method? Thanks for all you do.
Sorry for the delay in answering.... I didn't see your comment. You can certainly emboss with a hydraulic press, but you will need metal that is quite a bit thinner in order to achieve similar results.
You can do that by either using liver of sulfur to darken then steel wool or polishing pad to remove some of the patina or you can color using a torch - called flame painting. In order to keep the colors/patina you will need to seal the copper using something like ProtectaClear. I find that laquer or acrylic tend to yellow over time and you also tend to lose more of the purple/blues. Anything you cover the copper with will affect the flamed colors if you go that route as the protective finish tends to diffract light differently than the naked copper would. Hope this helps!
Thank you so much for sharing.... I loved this video on the cupcake wrappers, but I also want you to know that all of your video's are perfect in your explaining how to do it.... My question is, how do you form you bracelets and if it is a rolling machine, what is the name of it... I have been making jewelry since I was 12, and I have always did it all freehand. Now I think I want to move forward in some simpler ways... Again Thank you for your beautiful instructions Debi
Thank you Debi. In this case, I used my hydraulic press to do the actual forming. But there are some other tools that I will also use if all I want to do is form it around into a bracelet without the anticlastic or synclastic forms. Joni Kisro has a bending system that is great for bending bracelets and rings. But like I said, in this case I used the hydraulic press.
I accidentally said the links were in the comments when i should have said "Description" But here they are in case you are looking for them here. :)

That bracelet impression is beautiful.
thank you so much! it would be awesome if you could show how to add a bezel set stone to a cuff similar to what you made in this video

How cool! Will this work as well on copper? What gauge silver did you use?
I'd love to learn how to shape a bracelet cuff. I'm new to copper work but love cuffs. Thanks.
This particular cuff was formed on the hydraulic press. But you can also use a bracelet mandrel to form the bracelet.
Question: the Pepe tools rolling mill..... is the combination rollers flat spot large enough to do a decent size for flat? I don't want to regret purchasing the combo for the size of the flat area. But I like the option of square and round wire. I'm so confused oh master, can you help? Lol argh😬
Love your work and your way of teaching !!!!
Cool my son likes building knives from scratch i wonder if i could pattern the knife handle with a hydraulic press 12 ton.
i love this - i just (finally!) was able to buy a rolling mill and i'm so excited. i saw that someone mentioned a studio tour - if you haven't already done that i would love to see it. i am also also interested in learning more about forming, especially anticlastic, etc, for cuffs. tips that go beyond the basic technique, recommended tools, and all that!
I'm new to embossing metal. Have you embossed aluminum? And if so, what advice from your experience would you give?
Loved this tutorial about the cupcake wrappers.😊
Hola Melissa quiero preguntar como se llama la maquina para imprimir y donde la cosigo
I shop around, but I get a lot of my metals from Monsterslayer.com
Melissa, I work with vintage silverplate silverware and just got a Pepe and was wondering if i would get a good impression, have you ever used silverware?
"Ask Away Fridays!" I would LOVE to see a shop tour!
Thanks so much for this informative video and giveaway. My question is, what do you consider to be your most versatile tool in your shop?
Take care dear.
heardashot I look forward to that day. And the Queen of jewelry making is a bit of a stretch. More like the court jester. 😁
Lol....(big thumbs up!!)
I just obtained a Grizzly model T21320 rolling mill (in a shed...) and this was a great tutorial! What would you suggest to get the grooves antiqued? Thank you for your video! watching more!
Thank you so much I hope you enjoy your rolling mill. I used Liver of Sulfur for my patinas. But there are so many things you can use.
For Melissa Muir cupcake imprints found the wrappers on amazon .ca for canadians
Good project Melissa!!!
I’d like to learn about texturing bezels. Stamping or roll printing. What gauge bezel wire to use and how to keep the pattern and solder.
Those are some great topics. Thanks.
Great idea for textures!
G Day Melissa great video loved it. I have a questions what are your three favorite tools you cant live without?Take care Jen
I would like to know about Rolling Mill maintenance. I live at the beach, do I need to do extra because of the humidity?
How about 'Follow-up Fridays"? Love the patterns. I wish I had a rolling mill. I sometimes use embossing folders in my sizzix big shot machine with thin gauges of annealed metal (like 26 ga for earrings) and it works great! But it does damage the folders a bit, and I like to use them for my paper crafting too.
Great video - thanks! Doesn't it stretch the piece, whenever you pass it through the mill? I've always been told to add the pattern before cutting the shape got that reason.
wonderfull I have been in the decoration trade for 50 years and am still learning from you
gary langstone thank you. That is quite the compliment.
So cool! I love your videos. They are so informative. This question was asked below, but I also want to know what your very favorite tool is. Thank you!
Love the bracelet. What was the length of the metal and the pattern you used to cut the silver blank from?
It depends on what size cuff you want to make. I usually start with 6" for a medium bracelet
Great idea thanks, what do you use to keep copper and brass from tarnishing?
I clean it from time to time. It is hard to keep it from doing it. You can use renaissance wax, clear coat or protectaclear but I have found they still don’t always do the job perfectly
I am totally new to this can you direct me on a starter kit of sorts to begin using metals,, I have been making jewelry pieces with polymer clay but I'm so drawn to Copper and metal pieces!
I really enjoy your tutorials and am learning lots. Thank your for sharing really appreciate it.
Great idea!! I just saw you for the first time. Thank you I will be a frequent follower 👍👍👍
Welcome. And thank you so much.
I would want to learn how to give color to copper that is resistant to the everyday use. Also a review on rivets, ball rivets would be nice. Thanks
Again
Thank you for your beautiful instructions
Debi
Thank you Debi. In this case, I used my hydraulic press to do the actual forming. But there are some other tools that I will also use if all I want to do is form it around into a bracelet without the anticlastic or synclastic forms. Joni Kisro has a bending system that is great for bending bracelets and rings. But like I said, in this case I used the hydraulic press.
Love your videos! I learn so much! Cupcake liners! Who knew?
