Technically yes if you want to get into the semantics of it it's not technically pure silver. What I mean is that is sold sterling silver. I'm just trying to get the point across that it is solid and not plated or filled. 😅👍

Walking through a craft fair, my wife commented positively about these rings. My tinker brain said I can do this. Her birthday was coming up so perfect. I got a small dessert spoon (925 sterling silver), cut it, and slowly hammered it into shape. Beautifully polished, gave it to my wife and I was the talk of her social circle. Fast forward 10 months and we are hosting a group of friends for dinner. My kids are setting the table and one of them tells my wife that we were short one small spoon. She immediately made the connection and boy did I get an earful. To make matters worst, that silverware pattern had been discontinued for decades and can’t find a replacement. My wife bought a super cheap plastic set that she uses for my table setting when we are hosting as my penance. To this day, whenever silverware is involved, I am the talk of her social circle. Great video but make sure you don’t use your wife’s good silverware.

Lol well yeah that wasn't a good idea to use something that was her's without asking about it. I've told people in the past that brought up their grandparents or parents have a ton of this kind of silverware and I tell them not to use it without asking them or go by some just for this. 👍

I love spoon rings! They were very popular in the 70’s, and have made a come back. My son gave me several pieces of old silverware years ago, and some would make really pretty rings. I did get a civil war era fork that is so cool, but I won’t be using it. Lol

Good video. I feel like we’re pretty similar in skill. I have a studio at home too. If you wanna connect, let me know.
As for the patina rainbow color, it’ll turn dark over time just like leaving it in the LoS for for longer . You have to spray it with a clear coating to keep the air from further oxidizing it. It’s similar to flame coloring but most jewelers dont want to apply a clear coat because it changes the feel of the metal.

Ty for posting such an amazing video. I am glad to see that there’s teachers out there that aren’t taking advantage of everybody as far as buy this buy that and I’ll show you. That’s awesome of you. I’ve been making jewelry for almost 17 years and never thought about doing jewelry out of silver. I have a huge box of solid silver silverware that was left to me by my grandmother. I’m not sure if I want to sell the box or make rings or earrings out of them!?!! But I’m very glad to come across this video because it shows me the markings that I needed to look for on my silverware or if when I’m going to the flea markets or goodwill stores. I know you’ve posted this video over a year ago it came up on my feed, and I’m now a fan and a sub! BTW, your voice makes it easy to follow and as thorough as you can make it! Definitely going to check out more of your videos and also comment on them. I’ve clicked like I don’t know how anybody else could’ve clicked dislike on this. That’s outrageous peace be with you and happy holidays. !😊🫶🏻🫶🏻

I use stainless steel, much harder to work with but once finished look absolutely bad ass. But it is definitely a lot harder, but you have more choices if you can't find silver. And annealing it the taking wool adds such a beautiful patena. I highly recommend if you have the Patience because it is hard But well worth it in the end result. And very durable

One way to dispose of Liver of Sulphur - let it sit open air till it turns white, then pour it on your tomatoes. They love sulphur minerals. Once it is white, it becomes inert.
Bet those rainbow rings would look cool if you polished up only the raised pattern and left the rainbow effect on the rest of the ring. Very lovely finish!

You can use 14k acid as well. You just drop it directly on the item. It's what we do at the store I work at. We're usually testing for scrap purchases so it doesn't matter to us if it leaves a mark. Both methods work. Just depends on the application :-)

Thanks for this fantastic tutorial .I am a complete novice at spoon ring making and you have inspired me to per-Sue this hobby. Can you describe what you use to heat up stainless spoons? Will I not cause the spoon to turn a glossy blue black if I heat it with a blow torch?

I have a very old sterling silver tea spoon that I want to make into a ring. In the 70s a guy at a Flea market made spoon rings while you waited. I had one with my initial on it that I really loved. Unfortunately someone stole all my jewelry and I'd love to have another one. I love silver sterling silver I don't think gold looks good on my skin if I have gold it has to be white gold. I really prefer silver though. Loved your video!

Hey Randy, could you please go into more detail to explain how to correctly size a wide band ring such as the spiral spoon ring in this video. I’m having trouble finding info about this anywhere. My issue is making a custom wide band ring for a (eg) size 7 finger that will properly fit a person I’ve never met. Where on that spiral band would you expect it to sit on the 7 size on your mandrel. I have also seen designers advertise that their wide band ring is a 7.5 and will fit a 7 or 7.25. Could you please consider doing a video on all these wide band sizing issues and perhaps anything else you might know of that would help.. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Awesome video as always!! There is also a tool you can buy for about $80 that attaches to a 1 ton arbor press to bend the silverware rings. It works really good too and then you can also use the arbor press (without ring bending attachment) for stamping!! 😁 LOVE THE 🌈!!!! 💖
