You are clearly very talented and experienced with Blender. This might cause you to overlook the things that a beginner might not understand. Since this is a video targeted at beginners, I would like to mention to the frustrated individuals that cannot follow along with your key presses: 1. Space to search is not on by default in a new Blender 4.0 installation, go the Edit > Preferences > Keymap > Change "Spacebar Action" to Search 2. Tab does not bring radial mode menu by default. Under the 3D view options (also found in Edit > Preferences > Keymap) select the "Tab for Pie Menu" checkbox
This is a common annoyance in many tutorials where the UI or settings are customized and the TH-camr doesn't realize this. They just press things and do things without explaining what they're doing. @shpleegames thank you for pointing out these settings
Yeah and the workspace or what ever the views or panels/windows are called are not set up at all... I just installed it 1 minute ago and only have one big screen, not three. I guess I've got the scene, cause I see what looks like a camera and in a corner I see the axis, but no idea how to do the rest and it makes me wanna throw my laptop =')
At first: "Here's a tutorial for people that think tutorials go too quickly" Moments later: "Press E Left Alt Shift GZ to move V to separate and Left Alt Z to combine these vertices and go into layout to transfer these to the Y axis as you set the local to the outside frame. If you missed any of that, too late, I'm already moving onto the next step."
@@P4TCH5S I could recommend Imphenzia. His channel has a lot of stuff. He has a few videos concerning 3d modelling, along with rigging. He's just one person of many out there, and is about the only person off the top of my head. I generally bookmark a lot of videos for various tutorials. The above isn't terrible, but if I am not wrong, will run into problems with extra faces and such that might hurt rendering if you have a lot of this kind of work. I'm not a genius to this. I am very new to all this myself. I was taught in other places, the fewer extra (unneeded) stuff you have, the better. Also to say, this definitely is basics, not an all ecompassing tutorial of every aspect one might need to know based on what you will be using this model for. I don't beleive Imphenzia goes into that detail on his YT channel either, but then I've not looked at every single one of his many videos. I've not been lucky to find an all inclusive video package that explains everything unless it's directly tied to making demo/practice games which, if not require payment, largely are incomplete.
yeah, with the intro I was like, oh cool, this should be do-able. Skip to me pausing every 2 seconds cause he doesn't SAY what he's pressing but only what he's doing and I have to look at the screen or think for a second, which buttons to press. Yes this might be a beginners tutorial (I wouldn't know the difference at this point) but man this ain't slow
Hey! If you're a beginner/someone who hasn't used Blender in a while that's watching this tutorial and got to the part where he started UV unwrapping and painting the model, then first off - props to you for getting to that part but also, something important that he didn't seem to mention is that when you're painting the model, it is SO SO important to either pack your textures into the file (you can easily look up a very short tutorial on what that means/how to do that) or to constantly save the image with the UV on it to your device. This is because unless you do the former mentioned thing, if you only save your Blender file, you won't be saving the coloring you put on the UV and things will revert back into their default, uncolored state the next time you close and open your project.
@@snakestaffmagic4499 I thought so too. He says drag it in. Which is literally drag and drop it into your scene while in front view. I am a little stuck on the uv unwrap and paint. Since we make it all one object I am having trouble just picking the nose and painting it. Even if select the Geometry in the unwrap editor I cant just isolate the nose or any parts of the character. hmmm
2:52 shift+alt+left click to the line to select it, then v to separate them and L to select the right part (I’ve been 10 minutes replaying this to understand it, so fast XD)
For those looking to copy his setup from the start, you can set up the multiple window view by right-clicking on the gap between your viewport and the outliner and selecting "Vertical Split", then doing the same between those 2 windows and selecting "Horizontal Split". This way you can have multiple views set up.
Huge bummer to come all this way to the end and then have no way of recreating the eyes. This is an awesome tutorial that sort of leaves you with a faceless character at the end
>"have you watched a tutorial to create a character like this and it just moves way too fast? Well, in this tutorial we're going slow" >proceeds to go way too godddmn fast
I followed this tutorial. Was fun and most challenging was the texture paint and trying to get the materials imported. I also made some changes on the fly, giving it my own touch and modeling some extra things.
Great work, followed along with the modelling pretty well, only wished the texturing was its own dedicated vid, if not a longer section in this vid, because that highlights reel of the texturing and materials felt like "draw a circle then draw the rest of the owl"
This was a solid modelling introduction, I subbed like 2-3 mins in. The unwrap was perfect for these purposes, quick, simple, done. Then the last 3 minutes were straight to time-lapse speed, beginner lost... You even reposed to model, it's not complex, but again, beginner lost... It would have been better to demonstrate the block out for a few areas, showing how to hide and show areas to better paint or basic masking. At least that way as a beginner the model could be coloured basically. Then the window of materials just comes from nowhere, a link to your 'Blender 3D Materials Explained - Beginner to PRO' would probably help, but I think a quick and dirty video to setup and get up and running with your free pack would stop people bouncing off to end of this tutorial. To do this tutorial the viewer only needs to apply existing materials, there is a LOT of (good) information in 'Blender 3D Materials Explained - Beginner to PRO' but for someone that wants to follow this tutorial it's tmi... While it's a simple character, I wouldn't necessarily title it as 'beginner' unless he was providing shortcuts before he does his actions. He does say like, "Ctrl + R" for bevel, but not for everything. I'd say be prepared to spend about 30 minutes on every 5 minutes of video LOL

I've finished two very simple character models tutorials and unfortunately this is still a bit too fast and advanced for me so I'm glad its not just me being a slow learner. I'm going to do a couple more simple options and will 100% come back to this one though!

Sure, here is the translation: --- I'm no longer a beginner. However, I'm very interested in how others use the tools in Blender. I'm especially curious about the use of Sculpt Mode. So far, I've never really dared to try it because I thought it required a lot of time and in-depth understanding to grasp Sculpt Mode. And, by the way, I also expected long computation times from the computer. But the way SouthernShotty used the mode for corrections here was great. And for me, modeling is now faster. My thanks to SouthernShotty for taking the time to share his workflow and knowledge.
Love these tutorials, Always struggle on rigging and animating them, Any advice or will you make one for this character? This is kind of art style Ive been going for and texture :)
he goes really fast on some functions and doesn't explain what they actually do so a lot of stuff can get messed up if your default settings arent what he's using, so this is some of the stuff i had to change for things to work for anyone else stuck at the ear mirror modifier section, check what axis the modifier is reflecting across! his axes are set not to the blender default, in order to get mine to match i had to reflect across the y axis also for the triangles along the curve, if theyre not scaling properly along the curve, make sure the origin of the triangle plane is set to the same origin as the the circle, which will probably be the origin. if you search using f3 (that seems to be the default blender search hotkey, but you probably knew that if you got that far in the video) you can use set origin to 3d cursor additionally for the part at 22:40 when hes creating the pants, when you hold i and ctrl drag, if youre getting a lot of gaps between your faces, a little submenu titled 'inset' should be visible in the corner, inset is what the i is a shortcut for, make sure the 'individual' option in that menu is toggled off
I noticed part of why your model looks more professional than mine is neatness: it's important to not go crazy shifting things around too much in sculpt mode and relying on the "grab" tool too much because my mesh ended up with a lot of lumpyness. This affected the belt since it was copied from a lumpy and asymmetrical torso and make the buckle noticeably uneven as well.
It's a great modelling tutorial, specially for learning workflows but I was a little bit dissapointed that the end result looks nothing like the thumbnail, the eyes are obviously done with another software and the suggested zbrush stiches texture looks nothing to the one shown on the tutorial. Would be nice if you could continue this tutorial with a more "advanced" one covering this topics
1:25 if you guys can't use the grab tool, but all the other sculpting tools work, go to texture (where the radius and strength bars are) and delete the texture that you have. the delete has an x icon
Very good tut, I just finished me little cat. I'm not a full beginner and have a wee bit of experience, so through some other help i added little planes with some transparent textures to make whiskers. It has somehow made it look more mouse-like, but that's okay, as now it's time to learn to convert it to armature and learn how to rig with it... *cracks knuckles*. I will say, a little bit more on the intermediate side than a full-blown beginner tutorial. But still good, as sometimes it's good to keep beginners(cough, me) on their toes, if a tutorial is too easy they don't learn anything :P
If you want to center your image, there's XYZ circles in the top right corner, hit X. Maybe it's something obvious, but I only figured it out when I was struggling with mirroring the ear
I was douple checking the Speed of the video, because you said it´s beginner tutorial. Man you are very talented. Probably a ggod idea is a disclaimer before your video, that you should have arround 10h in blender to become familiar with the software. Also if you try to build up on youtube, there are some good questions in the Comments, waiting for answers. Thanks for sharing your knowlegde.
This was very helpful! Except at the end I followed the shader editor exactly but the rendered image does not show the painted texture I made, it's just the fabric cotton material in a silver color. I followed that section exactly so if anyone can help that would be very appreciated!
i dont know why but when i am in the texturing phase , i can paint every part of the body but the head , its driving me crazy Edit : i solved it by doing the following : go to edit mode > select all faces > alt+n > recalculate outside to let u understand this , is because there is some faces that are flipped inside the whole mesh wich prevent you from paiting it from the outside
I really enjoyed the tutorial, but I did have to stop and go back or look things up several times. I'm not completely new to modeling and texturing but I've only ever used Maya so this was a bit tough to follow. I made it to 25:09 and I can't progress any further because the color pick tool is not available to me. I have no idea where to find it, the hot keys for it don't work for this step, and there were no helpful answers online. Please can someone tell me why my color picker is missing in the image texture node when I try to add a new color?
All the beginners here, focus on the workflow and methods used. And realize shortcut keys are a luxury once you've performed the actions enough. It will be difficult regardless. You can do it!
For those wondering why their edge loop selection isn't working, try double clicking on a line segment (in edge select mode). You can also find more selection options on the toolbar at the top, under Select.
very nice video on otherwise rare organic, stylized character modelling topic. I might be wrong but somehow feel this would probably not work for game ready assets, or would it? that in terms of organic and separate vs. single shape objects is something that's never adressed and answered at all. would be nice to have a similar video with game asset considerations.
Hey dude! awesome tutorial but wow you go fast, I have a question though. Around 10:43 you have the triangles snap to the circle but mine isn't doing that for some reason. If anyone could lend a hand on figuring this one out, that be much apricated. Edit: Never mind, turns out it was because I forgot to switch out of edit mode!
as a beginner who is trying to learn how to use this software, you went so god damn fast that you should clip out your opening! you didnt really slow down, and i would have deeply appreciated you explaining your shortcuts and tools in more detail so i could understand how and why they work. im not doing tutorials to copy a thing, but to learn how the program works. i was able to construct the model, after pausing and rewinding like 30 times, but im still stumped on why your geometry nodes looked different than mine at the end, how to use the texture pack, and how to paint in the way you were doing. the last 10 minutes of this especially was hell to follow.....
I wouldn't call it very beginner friendly. It goes a bit too fast at times, which is ironic considering you talk about too fast tutorials at the beginning. Nonetheless I do like the final effect.
for some reason youtube lacks modelling tutorials for blender, besides the famouse tutorials like the donunt and the real begginners tutorials, we have so little actual good modelling ones, can u make more ?
Finished the modelling section! Really enjoyed this tutorial, would you consider doing a follow up for the rigging/animating? Edit: just doing the texturing now, mostly done but having difficulty impotring the stitch image into the texture mask, unsure as to how to get that in
As a beginner with about 5-10 hours, I had to give up on following this tutorial. I made it about halfway through after a solid 10 hours working on this. The screen layout with 3 windows is very confusing and complicated to follow what you are doing. You move through item sections, shortcut keys, and menus way too fast; even at 0.25 playback speed. I had to watch every section many times to get what you did, and I am still making errors I don't know how to fix. Lots of good techniques but I spent more energy following you than learning. I guess I need to find something simpler.
Update: I stepped away from this for a week or so and then tried again and was able to get all the way through it. I learned a ton in this video but for someone with less than 20 hours with blender this was a steep learning curve.
Why does my gridfill fill only horizontal? I don't understand.. I keep trying and it only works before sculpting but if I do it before sculpting the deformity is bigger. But I also don't understand how the ear is so "clean" After sculpting it into place, it keeps deforming the face (big flat one) after all
kinda a dumb mistake on my part, but if anyone was struggling selecting which half to use at 2:50, after using shift + alt + Lclick then hover your cursor on the side you want to select, THEN press L.
If you find it too fast, you can slower the video in the settings ⚠️ Watching the Donut tutorial beforehand is recommended since this is for beginners - intermediate users who can already move around the interface and remember some hotkeys
Hi, good tuto ! I have two questions : 1) What is the process to export it to Unity ? 2) Is it okay to have multiple parts for game characters ? (I am thinking about animations, multiple meshes, draw calls...)
1:12 to convert to mesh, you can go into object mode, then right click the ball and select convert to and then mesh. Does anyone knows how to open that search bar?
May you make a topology part where you join ears to head, head to body and arms to body too? Not just ctr+j, but actually connect ears topology to head topology. Please❤
tutorial speed's faster a little bit sometimes cant catch up and splitting 3 windows make the command words smaller always dont know where you are going in additions all commands aint defined so it's not for beginner though, anyway, it's useful indeed.
Kinda late but maybe it helps, you have to select the line loop with Alt + click on the line, then you press V, and without moving the mouse press right click and it will separate. After that you press L and the other half of the ear will be selected, so you press the "Delete" button and that part will be deleted.
How do you access Search feature? I am stuck at the first few steps because I cannot convert object to mesh. Its mentioned in the 1:08 mark in video. I hit space bar like the video shows, but it does not give me the Search option.

This video doesn't use the default keyboard shortcuts - be prepared to google every default shortcut if you are a beginner.
I really appreciate this. I typically run tutorials at .75 to .25 to follow along. This is just nice.
That's genius
Love these tutorials, Always struggle on rigging and animating them, Any advice or will you make one for this character?
This is kind of art style Ive been going for and texture :)
he goes really fast on some functions and doesn't explain what they actually do so a lot of stuff can get messed up if your default settings arent what he's using, so this is some of the stuff i had to change for things to work
for anyone else stuck at the ear mirror modifier section, check what axis the modifier is reflecting across! his axes are set not to the blender default, in order to get mine to match i had to reflect across the y axis
also for the triangles along the curve, if theyre not scaling properly along the curve, make sure the origin of the triangle plane is set to the same origin as the the circle, which will probably be the origin. if you search using f3 (that seems to be the default blender search hotkey, but you probably knew that if you got that far in the video) you can use set origin to 3d cursor
additionally for the part at 22:40 when hes creating the pants, when you hold i and ctrl drag, if youre getting a lot of gaps between your faces, a little submenu titled 'inset' should be visible in the corner, inset is what the i is a shortcut for, make sure the 'individual' option in that menu is toggled off
This cat loos soo cute and brave! Thanks! You are the best!
This tutorial is pure gold. Thanks a lot! Ciao from Italy and long life to Blender :) :)
1:25 if you guys can't use the grab tool, but all the other sculpting tools work, go to texture (where the radius and strength bars are) and delete the texture that you have. the delete has an x icon
thanks dude, starting without explaining how to put the image there is just perfect.
Shift + A -> Image -> Reference.
16:45 The mirror fodder fire
I was able to solve this problem. Right-click on the cube, select "Set origin" and then "Geometry to origin". I hope I could help
Nope i saw your short with this character about lighting then stumble across this awesome.
Yay I'm so excited!
Thank you for taking the time to make this tutorial!

I just wandered in off the street at the right time but it’s nice to be here :)
🤚
It looks soooo cute!
Can you show how you animated it?
I was douple checking the Speed of the video, because you said it´s beginner tutorial. Man you are very talented. Probably a ggod idea is a disclaimer before your video, that you should have arround 10h in blender to become familiar with the software.
Also if you try to build up on youtube, there are some good questions in the Comments, waiting for answers.
Thanks for sharing your knowlegde.
16:46 "the mirror forifier"😂😭
This was very helpful! Except at the end I followed the shader editor exactly but the rendered image does not show the painted texture I made, it's just the fabric cotton material in a silver color. I followed that section exactly so if anyone can help that would be very appreciated!
plss poast another video of how you rig it and put drivers to your character
bro went at the speed of light
mirror modifier to location is better than a mirror with mirror object? like ears to head, and arms to body.
Super cool❤❤❤ Can you please make a similar tutorial on the rig and animation of such a character?
i dont know why but when i am in the texturing phase , i can paint every part of the body but the head , its driving me crazy
Edit : i solved it by doing the following : go to edit mode > select all faces > alt+n > recalculate outside
to let u understand this , is because there is some faces that are flipped inside the whole mesh wich prevent you from paiting it from the outside
Great Turorial! I will definitely try this.
Thank you
All the beginners here, focus on the workflow and methods used.
Edit: Never mind, turns out it was because I forgot to switch out of edit mode!
i had the same problem but the triangles snapped to the circle once i came back to object mode idk if it helps
thanks bro
lastima que no expliques el proceso de texturizado, No etiqueta de principiante por que deja a medias el proceso de texturizado
as a beginner who is trying to learn how to use this software, you went so god damn fast that you should clip out your opening! you didnt really slow down, and i would have deeply appreciated you explaining your shortcuts and tools in more detail so i could understand how and why they work. im not doing tutorials to copy a thing, but to learn how the program works. i was able to construct the model, after pausing and rewinding like 30 times, but im still stumped on why your geometry nodes looked different than mine at the end, how to use the texture pack, and how to paint in the way you were doing. the last 10 minutes of this especially was hell to follow.....
Edit: just doing the texturing now, mostly done but having difficulty impotring the stitch image into the texture mask, unsure as to how to get that in
it looks so cute! i want to try blender.
I'd recommend Blender Guru's donut tutorial before this one if you haven't already
Update: I stepped away from this for a week or so and then tried again and was able to get all the way through it. I learned a ton in this video but for someone with less than 20 hours with blender this was a steep learning curve.
Now that is amazing, thanks and keep up the great work man!
Why does my gridfill fill only horizontal? I don't understand.. I keep trying and it only works before sculpting but if I do it before sculpting the deformity is bigger. But I also don't understand how the ear is so "clean" After sculpting it into place, it keeps deforming the face (big flat one) after all
are u trying to say that when sculpting ear u also sculpt the face ?????
as helpful as this tutorial is i wish there was something on youtube that had the whole model to rigging
Can you make a tutorial of how do you rig that character in blender?
Thank you! this tutorial really helped me.
kinda a dumb mistake on my part, but if anyone was struggling selecting which half to use at 2:50, after using shift + alt + Lclick then hover your cursor on the side you want to select, THEN press L.
Whoaaa, finally, thanks a lot
You're welcome!
Loved the video!!! Thank you
a lot of good and helpful information, but if its a beginner tutorial, why are you trying to speedrun it. SLOW DOWN PLLLLEEEEEEAAASSEE!
If you find it too fast, you can slower the video in the settings ⚠️
Watching the Donut tutorial beforehand is recommended since this is for beginners - intermediate users who can already move around the interface and remember some hotkeys
Finally! Thanks
great tutorial!!!
So 🔥 love your style.
Hi, good tuto ! I have two questions :
1) What is the process to export it to Unity ?
2) Is it okay to have multiple parts for game characters ? (I am thinking about animations, multiple meshes, draw calls...)
1:12 to convert to mesh, you can go into object mode, then right click the ball and select convert to and then mesh. Does anyone knows how to open that search bar?
Thank you so much for this tutorial! will you also show how to rig the model in future videos?
can u do a rigging tut with this character
Just to inform you you
I SUBSCRIBED ❤
very cool thank you, love it, really great, only feedback would be that the last part seems very rushed, especially the texture mask stitching part
I love this look! Thank you for sharing this process.
No problem 😊
Could you also make a video on Rigging and Walk/Run animation?
May you make a topology part where you join ears to head, head to body and arms to body too? Not just ctr+j, but actually connect ears topology to head topology. Please❤
20:35 Checkpoint
2:52 i'm stuck with the ear. after shift+alt+left click when I press V, it says "error"
Will you make the rigging tutorial for these???
Is there something im missing he just kinda skips to after he finished painting all the textures am i just supposed to do that on my own?
i got lost at 1 minute like how did he add the mirror modifier so fast what
i think its not for beginners :) but its so good
we love cubes
great tutorial. for beginners my ass though. you said you would go slow and you sped through it like you where going for a world record.
I subbed as soon as you said 'are you fed up of fast tutorials' YOU GET IT !
and then he made a fast janky tutorial
tutorial speed's faster a little bit sometimes cant catch up and splitting 3 windows make the command words smaller always dont know where you are going in additions all commands aint defined so it's not for beginner though, anyway, it's useful indeed.
Perfect.
Great.
Can someone help? I don't understand how he cut the ear in half. I followed all the steps starting @ 2:50
You can customize it to be space, it´s F3 i think standard
go to edit --> preferences--> keymap --> and on the spacebar action change it to search
just right click the object > select conert to > mesh
