- A cold start of my 2002 F250 7.3 Powerstroke automatic 4R100, XLT, 4x4 Crew Cab, Short Bed, with almost 284,000 miles on it at the time of this video. It was about 8° out, the truck had been sitting over night and was not plugged in. Cycled the glow plugs twice for about 30 seconds each. This will probably be my only cold start video for the year, as I've already got a lot up.
Mods are:
Fully converted to LED’s except for dash,
Recon Smoked Cab lights,

RedDevil46088 Yeah that salt is PIA for owning long term truck. Luckily I drive mostly those old dirt roads from home to work and back winter and summer, so no salt but have to be really careful not to crush truck by yourshelf
Yeah it sucks man. That's good that you can avoid the salt a bit. I really want to get this truck out of the salt, but need to get a good winter truck, so it might be a while.

Thank you for this video. I’ve battled cold starts for a while and it never dawned on me until I saw your video to give the glow plugs 2 to 3 minutes to warm things up. first turn of the key and it started right up. I have a 7.3 excursion 295,000 miles on it. Thank you again
No problem at all my man! Happy to help. You probably dont always need to let them run quite that long, but it definitely helps when it's cold!

As I was saying in other comments. Glow plugs, glow plug relay, batteries and injectors. Start there
After replacing just about everything on the truck, changing the HPOP was the only thing that fixed cold start problem for me. Starts right up without plugging in the block heater even in -20
Bad cold start was cured, for me, by new OEM injectors and valve cover gasket/wiring. (It's one assembly).
Don't forget about three starters every winter as well
Love it. My 99 fires right up with 243k. Starts up just as fast cold as it does warm

I live in Miami and my 7.3 has a hard time starting in the winter down here, it gets into the low 50s at the coldest and she still struggles to start. Lol

sometimes i wish i had of gotten a super duty 7.3 simply because its newer and made a bit more power but i love the single shot injectors and OBS style much more so i went the OBS route.

@@DreaminDiesel 310k might lift it a little higher and cut the rusty looking fenders to fit some 37s, the truck has a small lift on it on 35s now. I have no part history but I was told it has a performance turbo, injectors, and the tuner. Doesn't feel like a stock 7.3 lol
@@notimportant7382 hell yeah man, not bad at all! This truck has 318k on it now. And that sounds like a plan! You could do the bushwahcker cut out flares if you like that look. Would definitely make some room for bigger tires. That's nice to have some performance stuff done already, these things aren't too fast stock haha.

my 7.3 doesn't like to start in anything under 45 degrees
Might have bad plugs or something and when it gets into the 30's always plug in so the fuel doesn't gel up
Block heaters have nothing to do with fuel gelling, that's what additives are for.
Mine used to have the same problem. Definitely check your glow plugs, batteries and glow plug relay. Replaced all that, and now it starts up great as you can see. Also make sure your starter, alternator and injectors are good too. Those all play a big role in starting as well. And yeah plugging it in only effects the oil not the fuel.
Our shop's 6.0 didn't like anything under 60° 😅😅
Sounds like a 6.0 starter to me on a 7.3 engine. Faster crank will start that motor sooner
Actually was just the stock starter at the time. But the newer 7.3's did come with different starters than the older ones. The newer style cranked a little faster.
Just got my first diesel its a 2002 7.3 with 155k on it, I was wondering what does it mean to heat up your glow plugs. Live in southeast Texas so it don't get to cold
Heating up the glow plugs is just letting the glow plugs run with the key on for a little longer than usual. Like maybe 30 seconds or so.
The glow plugs turn on when you turn the key on and help the truck start when it's cold. And will actually stay on for a minute or two even after the truck is running.
So letting them heat up a bit is just trying to help make it easier to start when it's real cold. But like you said you probably dont have to worry about that in Texas haha
I just bought a 01 350 7.3 with 82k. 16 this morning and did not want to start, was not plugged in.

Yes sir, the grille is an 05-07 cut to fit the 99-04 bumper. And the headlights are a one piece Spyder projector headlight.

A buddy just bought 2001 7.3 is it normal to smoke cold ?
Yeah some smoke is normal, depends on how much and what color? Pretty much all diesels I've seen smoke when the temperatures are cold. Smoking for a few minutes and then clearing up after it warms up a bit is pretty normal. Smoke should be like a light grayish white color. If its bellowing out smoke or if its starting to get blue in color, you might be starting to have some injector or other issues. Of course the colder it gets the more smoke you're going to have. Once its warm out like above 50° you really shouldn't have any smoke, maybe just a little on initial start up but that's it.

Why not just plug it in if you're at home?? Even if it doesn't need to be plugged in, I always do (below-10° C) just so I don't have to wait as long for the dmax to warm up because that takes forever...
I don't plug it in because it doesn't need to it. Starts right up every time, and I just let it warm up for 10-15 minutes. Doesn't bother me.

Yup that's why I drive one because I know it will be reliable! Even though I think the miles are finally starting to catch up with it, nothing major though. Just the normal stuff like injectors, sensors, suspension and what not. And I didn't do anything too big, just a lot of little stuff. Did all new sensors, new HPOP lines and HPX line, an AFE intake manifold, Riffraff intercooler boots, OCR, CCV mod, a new 5 inch intake with AFE filter, 6.0 trans cooler, all new heavy duty battery cables and a new denso starter. I've also got a new PHP hydra and 4 new ISSpro gauges to install. And I have the majority of the parts to completely go through the suspension and do a 4 inch lift, once I get time. Then in the summer I need to do injectors and turbo/exhaust work at some point.

No its not too bad, hopefully it'll be really nice someday. And yeah its fun building up a truck the way you want it! Can't beat a 7.3, a 6.0 isn't bad either. Both will be fun but its a lot easier to make power with a 6.0. Yeah I get what you're saying, I'm in college too. But I stay at home and commute, saves a lot of money that way.
can someone tell me how to properly start up a diesel truck (2005 f250 powerstroke) in the cold?it gets 30 degrees here in tx, sometimes 20. Thank you in advance :)
Turn the key on, and wait for pigtail light on the dash to go out. Then crank it and it should start within a few seconds if not sooner. If it doesn't start, try cycling the key a few times, and letting the glow plugs warm up. Don't be afraid to crank it for a while either. Worst case try plugging it in over night. If everything is working right these trucks should fire right up in the cold, as long as you let the glow plugs warm up.

@@gs1408 wait about 30 seconds after the pigtail light goes out, not many people know this but, the glow plugs stay on after that light goes out, if you go off the light, the plugs will just be starting to warm up, then your shutting them off, making them close to useless

I'm guessing you have a 7.3, but it should fire right up. Something is not right. Does it always take a while to start, or when if gets a little colder like around 50° or so, if it gets that cold in Cali haha? How many miles are on the truck?

Ok so definitely check into your glow plug system and charging system. So check your batteries, wires, alternator, glow plugs and GPR (glow plug relay). If your truck is a Cali model you might have a glow plug control module and not a GPR. With that amount of miles you might need injectors as well, if they've never been done before.

Hey a real cold start is done without using the glow plugs
Proper fluid changes, fuel additives, fully charged batteries, etc. Cold starts shouldn't be an issue for any diesel until you get into the negative temps.

2001 or 2002 7.3 for my first diesel
Either one man! There is a few minor differences on the interior and exterior. 02, is a little more updated, but they are essentially the same trucks. If you have plans for any serious horsepower mods, you might want to get one with that has forged rods. Somewhere in the 01 year and later they started using PMR's which don't handle high horsepower well. But if you're planning on keeping it mostly stock or only slight upgrades any one should be good to go!

But I've still got plenty to learn with working on them and trying out different mods and what not. There's lots of info on the forums and here on TH-cam for anyone to learn. Just make sure you do enough research, dont always believe the first thing your hear. But seriously any questions ask away!
Any bad rust on it now
Bed fenders have a few rot spots, but nothing too bad. And there is some spots bubbling up on the roof that really concern me, but hopefully are fixable. Other than that nothing too bad at all. Truck hasn't been driven in the the past two winters so that has helped. Hoping it get it all fixed and cleaned up sometime next year!

Currently has over 311,000 miles on it. Still running strong!

try a quart of atf next time you fuel up to clean the injectors.

Check your glow plugs, glow plug relay and batteries. Could definitely be part of your problem. Could be injectors too. Check all that and make sure they're good, then go from there.

Yup that'll do it, glad you got it figured out! Just replaced my starter too. Didn't really need to, but I was installing some new/upgraded battery cables and as we were taking off the cable to the starter we broke off the connection on the solenoid! Probably could have just replaced the solenoid but we already had the starter out so I figured might as well just replace it and avoid future issues. Went with a true Denso and that thing is nice! Its twice the size of my old one and cranks stupid fast. Haven't fully finished up working on it yet, was doing some other stuff at the same time, so haven't really tested it out yet. I'm thinking I might need injectors too. Its starting to get a little rough on cold starts now, and I'm pretty sure its injectors. What you looking at for injectors?

Got an 01 2500 Cummins, and at 0 out, turn the key, let the "wait to start" light go out, and it starts like it's 80 degrees out. It's fucking amazing. Never had to cycle it multiple times either. Glow plugs are a money pit. But so are Powerstrokes!

I double click the key fob for a '16 Ram 1500 Ecodiesel, get dressed and by the time i walk outside it's ready to to be slowly driven away as it comes up to temperature. No drama ...

It was pretty cold out so I was giving the glow plugs a little extra time, but this was also before I figured out I didn't actually need to do that. This thing will pretty much fire right up anytime without letting the glow plugs go as long as I did in this video.

Man, I'm sure that sucks. Nothing wants to start at those temperatures. How's that old 12 valve start when its that cold?
RedDevil46088 starts amazing to tell you the honest truth. I've never seen another start as well as it does. The 12v is m girlfriends truck. I've got a 95 7.3 my self and at -30 you better hope you plugged it in the night prior or it won't start. But if it's above 0 it'll start no problem not being plugged in and no EBPV.
Awesome, well good for her! I've seen plenty of videos of those older cummins, and man seems like they just don't want to start in the cold. Like you're saying, I don't know if I've ever seen one start right up. The coldest I've started my truck was probable about -5, it actually started ok, but couldn't imagine -30. I'd definitely be plugging in at that point too haha!
