    Thanks ,this saved me and my 98 honda prelude. I took the range switch apart, not much inside. A wiper with 3 copper brushes that contact 3 copper rails in the housing. Cleaned it up , scrubbed with my dish washing scrubby , used some silicone plumbing grease that had on hand, put it back together and put it on transmission, have one hundred trouble free miles on it now, The hardest part was the bolt that holds the harness that you can't reach. I really appreciate videos like this, Thank you very much.

    This is EXACTLY the same procedure for a 2002 Honda Accord V6. It was a GREAT help to know how the wire harness clip works. Everything else took minutes but the wire harness was a problem for an hour since I didn't want to break it. All the wire harnesses connectors after 2002 are right on the neutral safety switch itself so no more snaking wires and pulling wire harnesses way inside the engine compartment. After an endless internet search, I came across your video and hoped you would address the harness. It seems like every wire harness has its own way to remove...push here, pull down there, etc. They should print "push here then pull" on every harness (unless all you do is pull). Anyway, mine was stubborn but after seeing your video, I wasn't afraid to pull harder.

    The Haynes manual says the vehicle and the switch should both be in neutral when installing it. So I dont have to put my 03 Pilot in neutral and it wont mess anything up as long as I install the new one in the same gear the old one was in?

    You did a very professional video Mr. Bundy. I like the way that you explain in detail the things to be careful of. Great confidence builder for back yard guys like me. By the looks of it though, in a CRV, getting 2 hands to that connection to the wiring harness is going to be a bugger because it is so far down there. Thank you for posting this video.

    Been getting 2 p1717 codes but I haven’t seen anything about it in the internet. Today my car didn’t want to start at all. I thought it was a bad battery so I call my dad to give me a jump start so I had to put the car on neutral and push the car back a little bit to give my dad some space when he gets there and after I had put the car in park, the car started. I don’t know if it was because I put in neutral, then back to park and tried to start it or because I was in my car waiting for 15 mins???

    so my uncle replaced the NSS on my 02 honda civic ex (automatic), i thought everything was good because the car started again but now when shift gears in to drive it seems that it takes a couple extra seconds to fully go in to gear.
    it seems like it behind or something, also when i turn my lights on at night, the light indicator on the dash, the one that shows you what gear your in is not working properly, it works properly when your putting it into gear, the indicator light will come on indcating what gear your in but as soon as your in the gear, the indicator light turns off like as if you where not in gear but the car drives fine, besides being slow to grab in to gear.
    what do you think he did wrong?
    thanks for your help!

    Do I have to Jack the car up with a floor jack? Will it be up high enough once I jack it up with the jack that came with my car? I'm sorry if these questions sound stupid but I'm tired of going to my stupid mechanic.. I've been telling him that the switch needed to be replaced since winter time and now it might even be to late for me to replace it because my cel has been on since that time. I'm gonna put it on anyway because I already bought the part (6 months ago) so I have to try. Thank you!

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries. Yes the jack that came with the car should be fine. Just make sure you secure it with a jack stand so it does not fall down on you. All you need to do is take off the tire and the switch is right there. There is a cover in front of it that is held in with 2 10mm bolts but it’s really easy. If you need more help you can post it here or email me at bundysgarage at gmail dot com.

And transmission kept getting stuck in a certain gear. So I changed the Neutral safety switch but it still does it

    Hey man my wife has a 2004 Honda Accord EX 4 cylinder and I had to replace the starter a few weeks back. Then a week or so ago she said that the car would not start or do anything when she tried to start it in park, but all the lights and stereo and everything else worked it just would not crank. Someone told her to put the car in neutral and she did that and it cranked and it is not happening all the time but the problem increased when it would happen. Then the first of the week she called me and said it would not crank in park or neutral. I got the car to crank the next morning and brought it home and I stopped by and had the check engine light codes pulled but the only code was P0141 the oxygen sensor. I have worked on this car a few times but don't know much about Hondas or front wheel drives. The car now when it does not start it is in both park and neutral, I can hear the starter relay clicking in no matter where the gears shift is set. The transmission range switch was the first thing I thought of, but then I saw where people were replacing the fuel pumps on Hondas that would randomly quit running and the problem was not the fuel pump but the ignition switch. So that has me wondering about the ignition switch, what would you think the problem would be, the ignition switch or the transmission range switch or something else since it is not sending any codes? any suggestions you could give would be greatly appreciated.

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +FordMan93 Thanks for watching. You got a great little car there, just keep up with oil changes and check your oil and coolant every month. You need to replace your neutral safety switch. That's what's causing your problem. They wear out over time and bring 12 years old things start to fail. You can go to O'Reillys or any other part store but here is the Honda part number of the part you need to make it easy on you. Honda calls it a Position Sensor Assembly P/N 28900-RPC-013. Good Luck.

      +BundysGarage Thanks for the quick response and the information, your video is great. I also have learned about that car and the VTEC motor about keeping the oil changed or else having to spend more time to clean out a screen located on top of the motor, which is a pain, and also cleaning out the VTEC Solenoid Valve Assembly on the back of the motor. It's my wife's car and she keeps it on the road and it has been a good car, it has 230K+ miles on it and gets great gas mileage. Once again thanks for the information and the rapid response, I just needed the wisdom of an experienced Honda technician who knows their stuff and you know your stuff thanks. I'll let you know how it turns out!

    I have a 1997 Honda Accord EX four cylinder VTec. I have a momentary engine stall that I have been attempting to diagnose for months. I have replaced the ignition switch, main relay, fuel filter, fuel pump, cleaned the idle air control, cleaned the cold start valve, cleaned the EGR valve, cleaned all the ports under the intake manifold cover, replaced the ignitor, coil, cap, rotor, and I still have an engine shut down. All the idiot lights remain on. This usually happens after the car has warmed up. I thought replacing the fuel pump solved the problem. Last night I made a sharp left turn (I live on a "cow path") and the engine died momentarily. I shifted the auto trans into neutral and hit the starter. The car started immediately. I no check engine light and no pending codes. The transmission is a Jasper rebuild (second transmission as the first failed under warranty at less than 25K miles). I suppose the hall unit in the distributor could be failing, the engine crank sensor could be breaking down from the heat or the ECU could be flaking out (bad cap, resistor, transistor or IC). Could a momentary drop out of the transmission range switch/Neutral safety switch cause the engine to die intermittently? I checked and cleaned the ground point on the engine intake manifold. I plan to remove the fastener and recheck the ground point.

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      bsdubois Man that is a bummer you have replaced all those parts and you are still experiencing the same problem. It almost sounds like your Ignition Control Module is going out (ICM). Do you know if the distributor has ever been replaced as a whole unit with a Honda distributor (dizzy)? I would try changing out the ICM and then if that does not work I would replace the whole distributor (whole thing) with a Honda OE unit. I don't think it's your computer, if it was it would eventually come to a point where the car would not even start. The formal name for the ICM is an Igniter Unit, that's what Honda calls it. The Honda part number is P/N 30120-P06-005. Hope this helps. I don't think it the transmission range switch.

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There’s nothing really to set. When you took it off should have had it in park or neutral. Then when installing the new one just install it the way it came off

    • @johndix1820
      @johndix1820 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you put the vehicle in Park before working on it turn the position sender switch to the left. As you put the switch back in position you’ll notice it only fits one way on the shaft. Eyeball the final alignment and slip it on. Install both sensor bolts so they hold the sensor then make them hand tight. Then finish tightening with a wrench.

    You see the manufacturers I think are kind of crazy kind of nuts a little knee to the nuts because there's no reason that that range selector has to be down there cuz nowadays they put them in the dash so I don't know what they were thinking when they first started putting them in there but you know at least before they put them on the dash they were putting them up on top of the transmission underneath the hood I don't know what they're thinking when they do this kind of stuff it's easier for them all of this is an electric switch it doesn't mean need to be down underneath the car and all that stuff like that

    So when you leave the transmission in park,then remove the component,the new component must be set in “park”,also,right ? If it’s in neutral, the new one must be set in neutral,right? And etc......

    @bundysgarage check engine code p0706 on acura mdx.. is this the same that needs replaced? transmission range sensor/switch?

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it could be. In the video description there is a link to go further into the repair to make sure it is the switch. Two common things we have seen fail, well 3, bad transmission ground, bad switch or the connector to the vehicle wiring harness has been installed wrong. If the Trans is making grinding sounds or shuttering, it's most likely internal and changing the switch will not fix the problem but if the light comes on and the Trans is shifting fine, most likely the 3 things I mentioned above. Hope this helps.

    Man I got a 2001 honda accord 2.3l automatic it's got code p1705 and d4 light blinking it will not shift into 3rd or 4th gear. Once I clear the code transmission works flawless. It will drive for like 30 miles and then out of no where bam it check engine light and d4 light start blinking and it drops into 2nd gear again. Idk what it is.

      +asdflkjh replacing the neutral safety switch will not fix your problem. The reason the car will not start in park is because of your interlock system. The system that only allows you to start the car when your foot is on the brake pedal. Scan the car for codes.

      Check starting system comes on when you put the key in the ignition. Sometime people think it’s a bad starter, alternator or battery but it’s usually this switch that doesn’t want to send any power to the starter. Happened to me today. Luckily my dads been working on cars for 20+ years.

    I'm replacing my transmission, I have no idea what gear the transmission was in. So when replacing the range senor how do we adjust it so the ecu know the car is in park?

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +owens417 There is a notch on the stem that comes out of the transmission allowing you to only put the swith on one way. The switch and the stem on the trans will line up allowing you to know that it is in the correct spot.

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a tough one. TupicLly if you lose reverse it’s an internal issue. This just tells the computer what gear it’s in. Not the other way around.

    • @Big_LosF
      @Big_LosF 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I've read this might fix it, 50/50 chance. It prevents it from starting the car while in gear and will not go into reverse. Its worth a try.
