Honda Intermittent No Start-Transmission Range Switch Replacement 2005 Accord V6 (2003-2007 Similar)

  • In this video I show how I replace the transmission range switch on a Honda Accord. This part is also sometimes referred to as a park neutral position safety switch (this term was used for older versions of this switch). I also go over some tips if you have an intermittent no crank no start on your Honda and suspect it might be a bad transmission range switch. The exact vehicle in this video is a 2005 Honda Accord EX V6 two door coupe.

    This happened to me 3 times. The first time had it towed to the dealer they changed the starter. Of course worked fine for awhile left me sit again. Had it towed again they found nothing it started right up for them gave it back.😔 happened again the warranty was about to run out on the new starter they put in (because thats what the dealer said the problem was). I called them told them what was happening they said you can have it towed in they would look at it.
    I dont know why i did it but i put the car in reverse then back in park and it started right up. I looked uo your video THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHAREING THIS!!!

    Thanks....great video. I plan on doing my 2015 Civic soon. Another possible indication that the switch is bad could be the fact that both"p" and "d" are lit when I first turn the ignition on. There's also a sizzling sound coming from that area. It's been ornery to start here and there, but hasn't stranded me yet. Thank goodness for the Gold Wing backup! Also, I'd be tempted to give those electrical connections a drink of contact cleaner!

    I been having this problem for years, all I ever did was put my foot on the brake and cycle the shifter and started the car. It usually did start on the first attempt but after the car not starting for me on NYE before leaving to work I am glad I found this video. I really do hope this solves it for me once and for all. Thank you.

      Are we twins or something? I had the exact same experience. Just cycled it to neutral every time until on NYE (a little over a week ago) it did not start at all. Took it to a mechanic and they couldn't duplicate it so they said its probably the battery and wanted to replace it for $250... Looks like I'm replacing this switch myself lol.

    This kind of intermittent problem is good reason to carry a few tools in the car, like a test light and maybe a multimeter. You never know when a critical clue, like no voltage on the S post of the starter, will narrow the hunt for a diagnosis.

    I've been nursing a bad switch for months, my mechanic mistakenly thought the chip in the key was failing, causing no crank, no start. . For a while, when Park wouldn't work, was shift into Neutral. Then sometimes back to Park, and then back to Neutral. It would always eventually work by just playing with it. Then when even that failed, I would leave it in Neutral and then just lightly bump the selector down or lightly move it up. That has been my go to of late. The switch will be replaced shortly, but these techniques should keep you running for a while.

    Question: Should that TRS be getting any kind of voltage when the ignition is turned to on?.
    I know that a relay inside the passenger footwell is activated when the ignition is turned on. However, that relay gets power from the ignition, but the ground is tied to the TRS. So the TRS has to be in Park or Neutral for the ground to be in play, which would then sentd the ground signal to the relay, and in turn, the relay sends power to the starter.
    I'm asking because I tried to bypass and I can't seem to get anything at the plug to the TRS.

    Very clear with excellent camera work and lighting. My 98 Accord shows same intermittent symptoms but I can get it started by wiggling shifter, stepping on brake or doing both. How would wiggling the shifter change things? Is there a mechanical connection to some electrical starter part?
    Thanks.

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There are electrical contacts inside the range switch and the range switch is connected to the transmission via the shaft it slides on to. If the engine computer does not sense that it is in park or neutral, then it will not allow the car to start. When you move the gear selector then that moves the contacts inside the range switch slightly which can cause either a better or worse electrical connection.

    Do you have to have the vehicle in neutral when performing this? If so, why?

    had the exact same thing happen on a late nineties jeep xj cherokee. would not crank in park. jiggle the shift lever and try to start would sometimes work. put in neutral and it would start. transmission range selector was the fault. simple fix once I figured it out.

      The switch on this model is on the left side, or driver's side in the US.

    Big Dog.. 2004 Odyssey, 184000 road miles - mild wreck in soft wet medium and post-repair by 2 years.. slight leak at tranny about a quart a quarter year.. went several months while I was sick with leukemia with wife & son driving & thought he was helping her with fluid check/maintenance but not - stick was at least 2 quarts dry with bands seriously slipping so poured a couple of quarts and slip stops for about 100 yards.. I add more & slips in about a hundred yards.. on stick but now I wonder if overfilled: why does it go in R & D like new for a hundred or so yards and then major slip.. stop & cut engine it jumps into gear like new for a hundred yards.. slip is checked by cutting engine for a short - don't follow this well.. filter pump strainer.. ??? Happy Thanksgiving Bro

    2005 accord 2.4, automatic, installed remanufactured from NAPA started right up. After warm up starter has a slight intermittent grind when turning over and starts up. Some times it grinds and sometimes its smooth as silk. Changed the relays and ignition switch. Taking car to NAPA today to see if they think it is a defective starter. Could it be a defective Transmission Range switch?

      returned the NAPA remanufactured starter and got a new starter. works great now

    I screwed up. with the selector switch off, I moved my gear selector to park trying to get the key out for the night till I got the part. Now I can't put it back in neutral or get the key out. Anyone know how to get me to a point where I can put the switch back on now that I have the part? Thanks in advance.

    What if the car does not crank in the neutral position?

    Hey Big Dog, I’m having an issue with the car not starting. Won’t even crank. I thought it was the neutral safety switch so I tried putting the car in neutral to start but still nothing happens.. could this still be the neutral safety switch or most likely something else? I’ve tried a different relay as well and still nothing. Thanks!

      Could be a lot of things, battery, loose connections, starter, wiring, starter cut relay, anti theft, ignition switch, transmission range switch/neutral safety switch and the list goes on. I would start by looking at wiring diagram for the starter.

    Can you please tell me where the camshaft position sensor is located in this car.

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On these V6 Accords, the cam sensor is behind the camshaft pulley, attached to the back side of the back cam cover. The timing belt, the camshaft pulley and back cam cover have to be removed to get to it.

    My brother in law has a 2003 Honda Civic lx. When he tried to start the car he turns the key but it won’t start. He has to turn the key over multiple times to start the car. I replaced the starter today but problem still persist. Car starts fine when it wants to but replacing starter didn’t fix the issue of having to turn the key on and off to start the car. There’s no force in turning the key so I ruled out ignition. Any ideas?

    Hi, I have a 2013 Honda Accord V6 with intermittent start issue. I hear a click but no start when I push the start button. I tried to put car in neutral but it seems like I can't shift out of park without car running & foot on brake. Is this proper function? Is it suppose to allow you to shift out of park with engine off & foot on brake? Thank you

    • @kristenadorno
      @kristenadorno ปีที่แล้ว

      The shifter is locked when the car is off. You should see a little black square next to the shifter. Pop that off and insert the key and you can put it in neutral! I have the same car 😊

      4 and 6 cylinder engines are in slightly different locations but their location is similar to the one in this video, behind the left front wheel.
