Coruscant is difficult to invade the same way Stalingrad was difficult to invade in World War 2. The Germans were stuck having to do "house to house" fighting against Russians. It's slow, dense, and resource draining work. Coruscant is incredibly thick. Not just on the surface but it has dozens of layers beneath the surface. The faction that ever had a realistic shot of ATTACKING and HOLDING Coruscant was the Confederacy. But only if they sent tens of TRILLIONS of Battledroids to swarm the planet and invade every level. Disposable droids are the only it would work if you attacked. The only other alternative is to blockade Coruscant's people and starve them out.

Russia is actually one of the most conquered nations on earth surprisingly...
I was thinking more of Istanbul/Constantinople. With its almost impenetrable walls/force field. A large population and of course its central location within the empire/galaxy. Both cities also had the capacity to feed themselves for quite a while.

@@papapalps2415 The NR took Coruscant in about 6.5 ABY (before the Thrawn crisis; yes, partially thanks to Isard's incompetence), but then lost it around 10 ABY to the Empire, and then reconquered it around 11-12 ABY after Palps was killed again.
That they didn't have to lay siege and fight for every inch doesn't mean they didn't conquer it; I mean, shit happens (surrenders/betrayals/secret passages) that doesn't require painting every foot with blood IRL, but if you conquer the territory, its still a successful invasion.
I mean, its reasonable to consider them taking it a third time, since the Battle of Yuuzhan'tar did end with a New Republic victory and them retaking the planet. Sure, Sekot did a lot of convincing, but there was still 1) and invasion and 2) casualties, including the death of the leader and his puppetmaster. So yeah, should probably be 3 times.
@@papapalps2415 if I recall correctly, that shield just prevented the Sith Empire from being able to use their fleet to bombard the planet in support of their ground forces. Meaning they were still able to send in ground forces and such to take the planet. Compare that to the planetary shield seen in Rouge One, where when the shield is up, nothing can get through. So I guess its just different type of shielding tech 🤷🏾♂️
I was always under the impression that Coruscant is easy to counter invade when it is invaded, since it's in the middle of the galaxy's trade routes.
Typhoon class 1440. Does counter invading mean strike back or hit CORRUSCANT with two invasions? Even though invading twice is VERY COUNTER INTUITIVE. IT just shows that the INVADER didnt get it right the first time. So, counter invade must mean PROTECT YO OWN ASS. Its a trip when GEORGE LUCAS and his staff come up with names for places and "BEINGS". THE names are synonymous with the definition of certain words in the English language. Like CORRUSCANT is something dealing with very bright light. Vader...ANAKIN'S switch over to the darkside was an invasion. and PALPATINE. WHICH comes from PALPABLE. which i think it has something to do with being able to influence things to THEYRE choosing.

My man Malgus didn't just invade, he burned the jedi temple to the ground and drove them off the planet.
Yuuzhan Vong: hold our amphistaffs
Malgus and Shae Vizla infiltrated (with Vizla deactivating the planetary defense grid), then used a hijacked shuttle to invade the Jedi Temple, while the Sith Fleet attacked with orbital and fighter bombardment while delivering ground troops, and occupied the planet for only two days, long enough to take control of the negotiations that produced the Treaty of Coruscant.

imperium of man would probably just exterminatus the place, no point in taking Coruscant if you dont care about galactic culture and being seen as a successor to the republic, and it has too many droids and ailens, both of which the imperium would be compelled to destroy anyways.
The ridiculous amount of fortifications and defenses surrounding Holy Terra makes Coruscant look like a joke.

yeah but to be fair it took a massive attack and Vong did not give a #$#$ about things like supply lines (since they travelled in world ships, not exactly what sane ppl do in the galaxy!) nor casualties. Yeah they "won" but most other groups would have considered it a pyrrhic victory

Coruscant was a Centrist world in the New Republic, and the Centrist faction seceded from the New Republic to willingly join the First Order as its political heart. It wouldn’t be too far fetched to say Coruscant welcomed the First Order with open arms.

The invading Coruscant while mitigating civilian casualties problem reminds me of the quote

Grand admiral Thrawn vs. Ender Wiggin
Each one has an equal sized fleet with equally capable subordinates, and since Ender is from a different universe each has equal understanding of the technology they’re using. They are in command of Star Wars vessels. Pick a famous fleet of your choosing I’d suggest death squadron.

Depending on the situation I'd say even or Thrawn. In tactical skill they are about equal. However Ender does not have the mental coolness Thrawn has and the willingness to kill/have his pilots die. So in a tactical game with no lives on the line its a coin flip. In a actual combat Thrawn wins because Ender is not able to deal with the mental strain.

i read the title and my brain considered the logistics of trying to do a full hostile invasion with stuff like fighting street by street to clear out resistance and my brain just looked at me folded its arms and said NOPE!!! im not even going to try working that one out.

I remember a really good SW/40k crossover that actually discussed this. After an extremely protracted siege to take just one ecumenopolis, the Imperium's command realized that they did not have the resources to invade every single one, much less the Galactic capital. As such, they would simple bombard them from orbit gradually until the planet either surrendered or there was no civilization left on the planet, opening it to Imperial settlers and clean-up forces.
@@papapalps2415 When faced with a slow death by orbital bombardment, most planets this tactic was used on in the story did end up surrendering.
The Imperium in the story was actually portrayed as pretty competent (or at least the leadership of this crusade was).
The plan was to simply take a large portion of the Galaxy and cripple the Empire's current military (the War was started when Palps sent a fleet into 40k that burned several important planets in a major sector). They knew that there was no way to get total conquest of even the space they hold so they planned to take those world, introduce Imperial culture and religion, get more human alien species like near-humans Abhuman status, and make the more alien ones second class citizens or exile them depending on how far they were from humanity. They would then slowly convert the space into standard Imperial space by slowly pushing Imperial culture and religion on them generation by generation.

I absolutely love Coruscant.
I think it's also worth mentioning the scale of such an assault. Most planets in Star Wars seem to have a few major cities, usually centered around spaceports. The majority of useable land area seems to be unoccupied. That's not the case for Coruscant, as the populated area that you'd have to occupy is the entire planetary surface. Depending on your sources, you might have several layers of the surface that need to be occupied.

Corusanct is based on Trantor from the Foundation series. Trantor was one big city - the only green space was the palace and the university. It was not invaded directly. Instead, raiders captured the six agricultural worlds that fed Trantor and just starved it out. In the second book, scavengers are scrapping all the empty buildings.
So yeah, a supply line siege is 100% the best way to take Corusanct. Or just planet-bust it.

Hey Eck, I was just watching the Citadel arc of the clone wars again, and I know the whole premise for that arc is to recover the Nexus route from Even Piell, a route that apparently lead into both the Separatist and Republic home worlds. You ever think that is how the CIS attacked Coruscant? Would make sense because the way the episode ended it sounded like Palpatine would get the coordinates.
That's a nice take on it, considering both Tarkin and Anakin are close to Palpatine🤔😳

The biggest problem with Courscant is the ground battle. Even during peacetime the occupying force doesn't have full control of the planet as the sheer depth of the city means it is very easy for kilometers of vertical cityscape to be under the influence of a hostile force who can freely move across the city using the abandoned lower levels only to pop up anywhere on the planet.
Yeah, I didn’t even think about that...I’d been imagining just trying to take the top layer of coruscant, which would be an absolute nightmare. I couldn’t even imagine anyone doing that successfullyy. And then trying to take another couple dozen layers. You might as well just leave the planet be.

The lesson: Forget Coruscant. Take Brentaal instead. Coruscant may be the center of everything else, but Brentaal is the Galaxy’s transportation hub. Transport hubs are far more important than political or cultural centers.

CIS had a back door from the leader of the Republic and still ould not keep the planet. The Rebels never took the thing, that was the New Republic. The Vong got it from the NR leader's stupidity. They also could not hold it.

@@papapalps2415 forgot about that. Even so, the fact of the matter is that coruscant has been invaded multiple times and changed hands almost as often. The CIS captured the chancellor and killed thousands of troops and civilians, while also dealing damage to the republic’s navy/morale. While they eventually lost, it was a devastating blow. I haven’t finished wedge’s gamble so I’m not up to speed on the NR’s capture, but I do know they won it in the end. The empire never fights fair, so I’m not surprised the NR couldn’t keep it. As per the vong, they were more devastating than anything the galaxy had ever seen. Nobody would have held coruscant against them, maybe not even thrawn.

Legends era is even crazier. The Skyhooks by the wealthy or criminal elements are physical obstacles, the massive population, and ridiculous diversity of species, as well as many "fortified" positions.
Your telling me. I mean a massive defense force there? Sheesh!
Not to mention that occupying forces could use the lower levels to hide thousands of reinforcements and back up weaponry.
