While the topic at hand is a form of media commonly associated with small children, the purpose of this video is to present a mixture of analysis and comedy about said media from a distinctly adult perspective, which may possibly include profane language and references to sex, drugs and/or violence. TH-cam, like many websites, collects personal data on its users. The Child Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) has made it illegal to collect personal data on children younger than 13, and rather than fix their own algorithm, TH-cam is essentially threatening to pass the blame onto content creators whose work may seem "attractive" to children. In some respects, I don't think Escape From Tomorrow was even necessarily about Disney at all. It's about a guy who comes to terms with the fact that he cares about his daughter way more than his son, no longer has a connection to his job, and doesn't find his wife attractive anymore. Instead of showing maturity and owning up to this, he scapegoats Disney (who aren't really responsible for anything he accuses them of), and feels better lashing out at "mindless brainwashing corporate sheeple," because it makes him feel more self-confident, instead of realizing that this problem probably predates the trip, and that he's been feeling this way for years beforehand. In the hands of a more talented director, this could have been a really compelling film. And I hope eventually someone else takes the same basic concept and redoes it, because so many people can relate to saving up for an expensive trip and having life refuse to allow you to be happy while you're there. The last time I went to Disney World, my family fought constantly with each other. I can relate.
Tony, this is why I watch your videos. Even if the director of this film and you had the same technology, you have an eye for timing, comedy, and storytelling he lacks. You can do a lot with a simple camera and editing software, but a good eye needs to be trained. Plus, your cynicism comes with heart, where he was just downright nihilistic.

Not to mention that they could've depicted the hug in a whole different direction. The character could've been fired for hugging her for so long in the first place since a lot of overprotective/overreacting parents see hugs as sexual and therefore would mistaken a costumed employee for a pedophile. They could've explored that instead. But nope, 'hug of death' it is.

You probably COULD kill someone with a hug, but my guess is that it involves at least 2 of the following things:
More muscle than a 20-30 year old woman who isn't a dedicated bodybuilder would have (especially when she's basically working as a model),
Intent to kill - which she probably didn't have,
A girl with bones or a body so fragile that their parents wouldn't have taken her to jostling-park central Disneyworld, much less let a woman hug her (admittedly, I could be wrong considering the make-a-wish foundation, but I'm pretty sure Disney trains their employees to handle those kids with special care)

The epilogue to this review couldn't have been more poetic. Happiness is a human construct. It's what keeps us living our lives. And whether or not you care about Disney, Escape from Tomorrow has less to do with Disney and more to do with humanity. Even though it thinks it's referring to Disney, in reality, the only true escape is that from the future. No matter how bleak tomorrow may seem, as long as we keep living the best we can, it won't matter.

Ya know Tony, when I saw Jerk get into the car and drive up that road I knew where the destination was. I KNEW where the ending was heading to and it simply didn't matter. I STILL got shivers of joy up my spine when I saw the car pull into that lot. You know why that is? Because the ending to this video is everything the makers of Escape from tomorrow despise. To their jaded, cynical minds, when they watch this while they inevitably decide to monetise your work, they will interpret this ending as a ''grown ass man'' giving up. Refusing to embrace their tin foil hat ''warning'', giving up on ''maturity, reality and normality'' and instead choosing what they see as the ''easy way out.'' To become what the internet would so ''graciously'' refer to as a ''Beta male, neck bearded man child who refuses to grow up and be an adult.'' Who, like that morbidly obese middle aged, mobility scooter bound man with the neck brace who in this film they just love to blame for all the problems in the world, latches on to Disney, escapism and everything else their movie spits on to cover up non-existent ''shortcomings'' and ''failings'' in life, (because no one EVER enjoys these things out of a sense of actual fuckin enjoyment, right?) and has willingly chosen to cover his ears to all those VITALLY important lectures about ''target demographics'' so he can blatantly refuse to fulfil society's ''needs'' and instead become what Simon Pegg once called ''Infantilized.''
Those kinds of people who think that way, who look down on everyone else because their interests and hobbies aren't their close minded version of ''normal'' because they don't directly tie into improving their social status, sex life or finances have my pity for the shallow, empty lives they must lead. Sure, on some videos their comments might get a majority of thumbs up by a handful of brain dead assholes who believe them but what does that really amount to? Nothing really. There are people like the director of this poor excuse for a film who think they're getting an ''important'' message out to the masses. Then there are those who are so obsessed with the preservation of these meaningless and downright archaic social norms/gender and age roles as well as making sure no body can enjoy ANYTHING outside of their assigned age or gender, that they will bully, harass and shame those who do until they just blindly accept the status quo out of fear of more suffering. Both sides of that jaded, inner childless coin have their fans who will blindly hang on every word they say and believe that they can never be wrong. I know that this is merely a character of yours that I'm looking at, but that heartfelt speech that character made right before he chose to ''go off the cliff'' left me with such a warm feeling inside that in all honesty, I didn't care. It's right. Every word of it is correct. Escapism, Disney, fantasy. There's nothing ''evil'' or ''sinister'' about any of it. At the same time this message could even be applied to stuff like nerd culture, where the people in that corner of society, the cosplayers, toy collectors, whovians, trekkies, etc have the harsh stigma that they are ''pathetic'' for having these interests. That they are nothing more than ''virgins'' living in their ''mother's basements'' who's only chance at living a truly ''happy'' life is to give up on individuality. to give society what it wants to see, give up all your interests and the stuff that goes with them, ''get laid'' and ''move on.'' Because they've seen enough episodes of ''Big Bang Theory'' to know that any adult who has the nerve to have an interest in toys or comics is just a ''loser'' who takes ''toys out of the hands of children'' even though there's clearly enough to go round in most cases. (The recent SNL Star Wars skit is a crock of shit in that regard.) In reality, they're the ones with the shitty lives and they just want to shame and take it out on everyone else so that they can be seen as ''social heroes'' for a change. Randy Moore is one of those people, only his ''cringe'' isn't bronycon or people who happen to be into steam locomotives. No, his target is Disney because it was wrecked for him at a young age and now he's lashing out. That is why this movie exists.
It's also why, Tony, I'm glad people like you exist. You have no shame when it comes to your interests because there's no shame that needs to be had. You have a genuine love of Disneyland and Disney in general that is admirable to say the least. And ever since I first saw your videos on blip, I have had nothing but respect for you. You know how important escapism is, you fully and happily embrace it without hesitation and see movies like Escape from Tomorrow for what they really are. Bull Shit. You encourage people to hang on to their childhood to the healthiest degree. Have no kids? Go to Disney parks anyway. Embrace all of your ''weird'' and ''socially abnormal'' interests, enjoy shows and things below your age group and just enjoy life instead of caring about what others think. People like you deserve all the respect you get. Why? Because you're right. So when I see this video and I look at that ending, I don't see what Randy Moore and his yes men are going to see. I see your character, The Jerk, exorcising his own doubts, accepting his love for the things he enjoys and finally returning to a place he thought he would never return to. the Jerk started out this review by trying to convince himself that the ''enemy of my enemy is my friend.'' By the end however, he wouldn't even give the enemy of his former enemy the undeserved dignity of being dramatically thrown into the ocean. By the end, it felt like he had finally come back home to make peace with an old friend and restart his relationship with them. Because ''real men'' need not be ashamed of what they feel a connection towards, just as long as it's legal and isn't hurting themselves or anyone else.
With all that said Mr. Goldmark, I'd just like to say thank you. Thank you so much for making this review, thank you so much for simply being who you choose to be and as an additional note, Happy Chanukah. :)

You know, I may not agree with much of what he dedicated his life to, but Mr. C.S. Lewis certainly churned out some brilliant nuggets of wisdom.
“Critics who treat "adult" as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

    • @WillieManga
      @WillieManga 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

MegaSOSbrigade Exactly. The conclusion and epilogue in total took over half of this part of the review. After talking with the great Trevor McCune he spends the rest of the review summing up why Disney couldn't care less about the film's existance, how badly they failed at what it set out to do, why the excuse of it being Postmodern doesn't work, (at one point, on a ferris wheel, lol) the lack of character development, why they failed to antagonize Disney, why the concept of this film appeals to him, and the true meaning of happiness. Doug Walker can wrap up his reviews however he wants, but Tony's content appeals to me because of how much effort he puts into it. The clever writing, the humor, and even the heartwarming portions invokes more emotion than many other critics. He knows that he doesn't need style over substance. I hope that does not change anytime soon.

I get the feeling his happy memories of Disney have somehow been tainted by his daddy issues and now they're sad, frustrating, bitter, or some combination of the three. If only there was a movie that could help him come to terms with how normal and natural it is for a person's memories to change and evolve over time, eventually prompting different emotional responses than they did in their childhoods. Maybe an animated movie where five comedy stars play the roles of a child's emotions and have to work together to keep the child from losing themself...

Good on you for actually talking to two of the actors from this sham of an outrage of a travesty of a mockery of an atrocity of a cataclysm of a disaster of two mockeries of a sham. Not many critics actually go the extra mile to contact the people behind the objects of their anger. Also, the stuff that Randy Moore said in 19:01 about individual minds creating their own realities and plural realities existing simultaneously actually kind of explains all of this. Jim constructs his own hell on earth out of his fears of the future from being unemployed, hence the title "Escape from Tomorrow." His paranoid delusions interact with all the paranoid delusions of everyone else he encounters until they all fuse together into a big ball of neurosis that destroys reality as we know it. That is why nothing in this movie is logical or pleasant. Likewise, Randy Moore has created a reality in which he is a good filmmaker who got that idea across instead of just making soft core porn for people who hate themselves.

What really gets me about this movie is its special brand of manufactured elitism. It’s all just projection; Randy Moore had a rough relationship with his father and now associates Disney World with these feelings, and instead of processing them in a healthy way or seeking help, he decides to make a feature length film to fuel his own superiority complex. He sees himself as intellectually superior to everyone else, but in reality he’s just some guy with a camera who can’t handle the fact that millions of people he doesn’t know find happiness in a place he can’t. Just like the film itself, Randy tries to hide this underlying projection under a front of artistic nonsense, and I see right through it.

    • @TonyGoldmark
      @TonyGoldmark  ปีที่แล้ว +8

The thing is, I don't even thinks he sees himself as superior to everyone else. I think he specifically sees himself superior to DISNEY WORLD and everyone in it. And he thinks there's a whole audience of people who also see themselves as superior who'll naturally key in to whatever tone he's going for. For someone so supposedly high-minded, his movie's almost perversely low-key and, dare I say it, even mumblecore-y. And the combination of the director's pretentiousness, the park scenes' matter-of-factly dullness and the bonkers bullshit of the shoehorned sci-fi elements just do not work AT ALL.

"So I'd say: oh, well, it's post-modern, and they'd just stop asking questions."
I cannot even put into enough words the amount of rage I am feeling at this asshole director's quote. It's not just using the term "post-modern" to explain away his nonsense bullshit, but using this excuse to take control away from his audience by having them stop asking questions about his piece of shit art. You're doing something wrong when you don't want people to question your art.
Other than that, this was a fantastic wonderful amazing review and I'm glad you're back in Disneyland.

As an ametur writer trying to get better, that one line really annoys me. PUT IN EFFORT DAMN IT! You can't just say something that has no meaning without proper context and expect to just get a pass. This isn't first grade!

+smack daniels I also read the whole page and honestly it seemed like the director stilled didn't know what he was talking about. He was more concerned with being artsy than actually being art. Besides one of the best postmodern movies to come out in the last few years was Pixar's Inside Out. Now granted I am not an expert on this stuff, but Inside Out was all about looking at a character's behavior and reasons for that behavior. And isn't that what postmodernism is about? Or at least a branch of it? Examining human behavior and the reasons for it.

It’s time for another GOOD IDEA and BAD IDEA.
    G💡💡D IDEA:
Making a Nintendo Wii cult classic focusing on the icon exploring consequences of his mistakes in a dark twisted mirror housing forgotten and discarded ideas of his parent company
    *EPIC MICKEY*
    BAD IDEA 👎🏻:
Making a pretentious art house movie implicating blame for one man’s mistakes and suffering on a theme park which is really just an excuse to try to rile up a lawsuit on copyright misuse.

The Disney parks mean nothing to me. I never went to them until i was pushing 30 so nearly all the magic and nostalgia is lost on me. But I did date someone who worked as a Disney Princess for many years, and honestly learning about "the real Disney" did nothing to make me hate the corporation -- because it didn't for her either. And that's part of what makes this review (and your show as a whole) so excellent. You aren't just full of hate and bile; you acknowledge what's good, and acknowledge what's bad, and then move on.

I just wanna say, my very brief experience working on this film was actually pretty fun.
I'm not an actor, have zero training, aside from two plays I was more or less forced or talked into doing. I was doing background work at the time and my calling service booked me as "valet". So I went in thinking I was just gonna be some faceless, voiceless figure in the background. But when I got to set, they sent me to wardrobe and handed me a script. Just like my scene in this review, it was all about having fun and living in the moment.
The director was actually very cool to me. Very nice, laid back guy. If there's one thing I can praise about him when it comes to this film, it's that he had a dream and he fulfilled it. Regardless of what you or I say about the film itself, (and believe me, I have ALOT to say) this film was his baby.
Not trying to defend the film at all. My lines in this review more or less covers my opinion of it. I'm more defending the director as a person.

I loved your final speech about diversion! I came really close to tearing up because I've feel much the same way, but you put it much more eloquently than I could. Being an adult Disney fan is so difficult sometimes because there are so many cynical people mocking and looking down on us. I just like Disney because it makes me happy. And why shouldn't be happy for a while? I have similar feelings about comedy. Good, smart comedy is hard to do and isn't appreciated enough.
About the time you started releasing this three part review, one of my friends was talking about wanting to see this movie because of how bold it is to shoot in Disney and I just shook my head. So it was nice seeing how bad this movie actually is so I don't have to watch it now.
Like everyone else, I was tearing up during your drive and just waiting for you to arrive at Disneyland.

I agree, I wasn't a Disney kid, I owned like two films at best. I was more Pixar, and then I just grew apart from all of that. Now, I am a massive Disney fan, I just feel like I missed so many great things as a kid, and I am completely right. I don't care, Beauty and the Beast is one of my films period. I don't give a damn, I like several of those Disney Princess characters, I think they are great. Yes I am excited for new Walt Disney Animation Studio films. Do I care what people think? NO! I squandered all those opportunity's some time ago, and it feels so good to fix those mistakes. Seriously, I feel like a happier person, no joke. I have no regrets, so anyone who wants to just talk about how life sucks, well don't complain to me while I enjoy the thing you loath.

As you said at the start of your Country Bears videos, you can't truly love something without mocking it. But here, in Part 3 of this video, you did something damned few funny people or reviewers ever dare. In your conclusion, you revealed part of your soul. You've grown as a person, a performer and a writer. This is the best Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or Whatever present you could have given us; yourself. From my comparatively small heart, thank you, Mr. Goldmark.

Makes me grateful for the first time in a long time that I can call going down there frequently routine, and be part of the collective experience so many others have that they call a fleeting moment of joy in their lives. Thanks man, seriously.

Also why does this movie have a 56% on Rotten Tomatoes? Anyway great review, that ending really got me in the feels, and when you said how the emu woman literally hugged a girl to death I nearly lost it. Again, this movie has a better rotten tomatoes score than Home Alone.

I finally got it! When the guy died from the cat flu that represented him finally being fed up with life and wanting to leave, seamen the company earlier realized this so they resurrected him but transported him to a alternate universe, erased his memory from the other universe and transplanted the memories from this universe, so Jim checking in was representing Jim finally getting something he didn't deserve because he's at the happiest place of earth, at least that explains why they brought in the Seman company, oh the tinker bell fairies are a hallucination side effect due to the memory taking out and transplanting.

What also gets me about this whole movie is that it had potential. If National Lampoon's Vacation could pull it off, why not this? I mean, all they had to do was develop the characters more, scrap the pointless fluff and just make it about the father reconnecting with his family and it would at least be tolerable. (As a side note, I think those two actors have talent. Hope they get casted in better rolls then...this.)

After putting some thought into not only some of the comparisons you've made regarding EFT, but also just how Jerk's character arc had been going from the end of Season Two up until this review, I personally think that giving a nod towards Inside Out in this situation was brilliant.
Relatively, the two films do share some things in common, yet they're the complete antithesis of the other. Whereas Inside Out is about accepting one's emotions and ultimately growing up, EFT completely spits in that concept, by having Jim repeatedly deny his feelings and ultimately not evolve as a person or even as a human being whatsoever (aside from getting his apparent "Heaven").
As for why I bring up Jerk's character arc, (and I might be reading too much into this), it almost parallels some of the arcs that the film goes over. A relatively innocent character is presented with the hard truth of life, tries to deny/avoid the topic entirely, and ultimately accepts it, therefore growing as a person.

    • @Shades14
      @Shades14 ปีที่แล้ว

Sorry for replying to a year-old comment but it gives me an excuse to say something I've wanted to for years.
The wheelchair guy is supposed to be depicted as villainous because he dares to enjoy Disney World, but you'll notice how he and his son stayed with Sarah after she got hurt instead of leaving her there.
Sure, they didn't try to take her to the nurse, but it was probably safer to stay there for a bit and hope one of her parents would show up soon. If Jim didn't show up in a reasonable amount of time, then they probably would have taken her to the nurse and then find a member of the staff who could reach out to her parents. Wheelchair guy is a parent himself so he would know how to handle the situation, but he's supposed to come off like a jerk.
And then for the rest of the movie, he's depicted as an obstacle, a nuisance to Jim in all his subsequent appearances just because he dares to be a disabled person in an abled person's world and we're supposed to either laugh or cheer whenever something bad happens to him.
As the child of a disabled person whose dad was in a wheelchair until the day he died (the very year this review was released by coincidence), I don't have a very positive opinion of Mr. Moore because of that character's depiction or treatment.

  • @thatlemonadeguy6742

How to save the movie? Make a Gaspar Noé-sque story; the guy is an absolute looser: he lost his job, his wife doesn't love him anymore, his children are annoying, and on top of that, he is at Disney which he hates. His solution? He takes any type of psychodelic drug. It starts nice; the hallucinations with sexy women and all that stuff, but he slowly starts to have a bad trip because of all the things going around him (because he's in frickin' Disneyland) and starts with the scary hallucinations and the weird storylines. At the end, the trip ends and he leaves the hotel with his wife and children. Nothing happened yet everything happened at the same time; maybe not a tight storyline but definitely better than this mess, and a much more interesting concept.

Can we talk about the poor editing on the "Evil Hug" scene. Legit they could've chosen ANY OTHER shot of the park to green screen Emu Lady/Witch onto and they chose the shot from a monorail ride. The girl's fucking flying in that shot and we have to accept it because "I am speaking English"

That was one of the most satisfying SJWAC episodes I've ever seen! Thanks, Tony, for the best Holidizzle present your fans and subscribers could ever ask for! And that ending! Boy, it was so heavy on all the feels that it was too hard not to smile! Now, to give myself a cold shower (or some other way to neuralyze myself) and pretend that this pompous excuse for a Hitchcock/Lynch fantasy thriller set inside a theme park doesn't even exist in my mind...
    Got any ideas?
