I have used and recommended Fram oil filters for years. I don't need to watch the follow up video, I have known for a very long time that nearly everything about Harley Davidson motor cycles are foreign made. About as close as we come to American made is the assembly process, because even the frames are made in Canada, at least they used to be. Now a days they may be made in China. I know that's where that oil Filter was made. at least the new Harley Davidson filter was. I'm not sure if I remember what state the fram filter was made, but I'm thinking they're actually made in Wisconsin. But I'm not sure without looking that up. Great video and I absolutely loved your speech at the end. This all about me, me, me society is truly sickening. I wish you the best. Peace..

This is a real blow to the purist out there who are "I only use HD parts only." and definitely threw some egg on HD corporate's face. It's the way you handled it and your message at the end that stood out to me. Thanks for that.

I'm pretty sure HDs corporate face is just a broken egg at this point. Most of their products have been dissected and proven to be extremely low effort and low quality. They've historically had random periods of producing straight garbage because they can ride on reputation for while, then snap correcting once people catch on.

@@chrisclark6161 Sadly, I have experienced this first hand buying Harley parts/Accessories for my bike. I have now returned three (3) HD things I purchased for my bike in the past two years because of flawed workmanship/poor quality - but the price $$ was still premium Harley Davidson. No more, I've given up on them. I am convinced they were just Made in China imports with HD's logo. I mean, they really were Dollar Store quality. I will only buy non-HD after market now or do without. I am especially shocked and surprised at the oil filter here. No more HD filters for me. It has been obvious for a while now that HD is just a profit/greed company that only cares about the shareholders. It's sad to see that happen to what was once a company that really cared about its riding customers. If anyone here plays guitar, you will know that Gibson is now the same as HD in this respect. Low quality/max price and profit. 😒

@@VN9001 I only use after market parts on my Softail, and most of those are made in the USA. (most harley techs and mechanics do as well, even though they could get the HD branded stuff at a discount). The only think I get HD branded first if available is the electronic wiring harnesses, extensions, kits, etc. That stuff it is still made of great quality and better than most aftermarket. My bike is very far from stock, and the only thing that is HD branded is the Quick-detach mounting kit for my sissy bar. Everything else that is not stock, it is aftermarket. I buy performance upgrades from DKCustomProducts, and Handlebars, pegs, bags, risers, gloves, and more from Trashin' Supply Company. Both american small business, and parts manufactured in the USA of high quality. You get what you pay for, and HD (made in china) aint it.

Back then Fram filters were made with better components and were much higher quality than even the OEM filters we made. Fram set their standards higher and were a bit of a pain to make because of those standards but I've used them ever since with no regrets and even paid more for them knowing I was getting a higher quality part. It's nice to know that they haven't lowered their standards over the years like some manufacturers have.

This is one of the best videos I have ever seen! I remember a few years back, people started running down Fram filters and many more jumped on that bandwagon. I have never had any problems with Fram oil filters, and never witnessed anyone else having any problems either. I was always suspicious of all of the anti-Fram claims. Here's some good evidence that my suspicions were correct. I would be willling to bet that it is not just Harley Davidson that is skimping on parts either. There is good reason to believe that many OEM parts are not as good as name brand aftermarket parts. Who knows who even makes OEM parts anyways? The manufacturers sure aren't going to tell you. One thing you can count on though is this: OEM service parts (like filters and tune up parts) are made by the lowest bidder that could meet the minimum specifications. The only thing Fram makes is filters. They have a lot more to lose if it found that thier filters consistantly fail than Harley Davidson or Ford does if filters with their names on them consistantly failed. People consider HD a motorcycle manufacturer, and Ford an auto manufacturer. Most people wouldn't judge an entire bike or car by the OEM filter, even if it failed. They would just say something like "It's a good machine, it just had a bad filter." If the same thing happened with a Fram filter, they would say "Fram filters are junk."

All very true, but when you deal with as many oil sample testing results that utilize Rotating Disc Electrode (RDE) and Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) tests to determine particle size as i have over the years you get a sense of the difference between say a Fram's vs a WIX's filter media and to me thats where the rubber meets the road. I've had crappy chinesium two dollar filters outperform Fram but shockingly come very very close to WIX in ability. I'll be honest though, i dont see many Fram results anymore because mostly everything i touch is WIX equipped so Fram may have picked it up quite a few notches over the past 7 years...

    • @dangerous8333
      @dangerous8333 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

There is not good reason to believe that aftermarket parts are better than OEM, because that's just not true. I've been restoring cars for 25 years now and it really depends on what car/motorcycle maker you're talking about.
For instance, OEM Yamaha and Honda parts, and I'm talking specifically about my motorcycles, are just as good if not better than aftermarket parts. The same was always true about my German vehicles.
Harley-Davidson on the other hand is known for trying to rip off their customers.
So it's pretty far fetched to use this example and apply it across the board.

Overall I think it was a fair and honest video with the information supplied, but there was some left out.
      The differences in filter media.
      1. The total square inches of filter media. The amount of surface area determines the amount of oil that can be filtered at once.
      2. The size of particles that are filtered out. The HD twin cam filter (99 part number suffix) goes down to 5 microns. The Evo filter(77 part number suffix) only filters down to 30 microns.
      3. By pass pressure rating. All spin on oil filters have some form of oil filtering by pass. It allows oil to by pass the filter if the filter gets to restrictive ot flow. Dirty oil is better than no oil. All spin on filters will do this way more than you want to think about.
4.is the filter capable of providing enough oil. A sportster with a twin cam oil filter will experience bottom end low or no pressure.
I personally would not put a Fram on my lawn mower let alone an expensive motorcycle. 20 years of working on American air cooled vtwins for my money has taught me. There is the exception to every rule, and you really do get to see it all.
Much like many things that were better in the old days Fram is one of them. H

@@TraceyAllen You can plainly see that HD is skimping on filter media because of all the space between the pleats. Add all the glue that's clogging the filter media, and I guess you get the picture.
As far as lawnmowers or motorcycles go, I don't have an opinion on the quality of Fram's oil filters. But for automobiles Fram makes some of the best on the market. The Ultra Synthetic is top notch.

    • @TraceyAllen
      @TraceyAllen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@snippits75 I’m glad that you have had good luck with fram filters. I’ve been a technician for 20 years, specifically working on Harleys, victory’s, excelsior henderson, buell , and Indian. I have never seen a stock/Oem oil filter that was properly installed, fail. I have seen several Frams. Not a big percentage of the total amount, but more than 0. The main failure point is that glue. The filter media will come loose and plug up the filter. Oil temps in air cooled motorcycles gets really hot, especially now when they are running so lean for emissions, like 275 to 350 degrees. Maybe more if you are in the south.
At the end of the day the biggest problem with any vehicle is the lack of any kind of maintenance. I’d rather see you regularly change your fram filter, than you neglecting a stock one for too long. Regular maintenance is the cheapest option.

My bike is black and orange. Fram filter matches my bike, LOL. Works just fine no issues. I’ve been using them for 30 years absolutely no problems. God bless.

The best side by side comparison video I have seen on the subject. That alone would make me subscribe but you're appeal to treat each other with kindness really sealed the deal. Well done sir!

hey Jay, I like motorcycles, but don't own a Harley. I clicked on your video because of your appearance, you looked like a guy who is who he is and looks like a motorcycle mechanic. I enjoyed your presentation. I like the way you use your words and tell your perspective. I like your research. And thanks for the advice for my life. Appreciate you putting time and effort into making this video.

Really impressive video. The filters, the being kind.
I have been using K and N oil filters in my 04 Heritage. I looked at the box and they were made in Taiwan.
Now I want to take it apart and look inside.
You are a good man Jay.
The world is still full of kind people and you are an example of them.
    Cheers from Ontario

Hi Jay! Excellent video my friend! First time viewer, now a new subscriber! Over 40 years as a mechanic. I have used nothing but fram oil filters on my own machines. For my customers I will always offer that. For the customers that want the oem filter, I am happy to give them what they want too.
As a professional mechanic that has run my solo shop over 35 years, your words at the end are truly the key to the best work life I could have ever imagined! I practice that everyday.

Excellent Jay, I have used fram for years and never had any problems, Im always amazed of the amount of people who think a Harley engine is so sensitive to oil and the filters those engines do not have super high tolerences they are not much more engineered then a horizointal shaft lawn mower engine and if they were machined to high tolerences they would not use 20w 50 oil now that being said that's why I love the evo and older harley engines becaouse they are very basic and easy to work on, thanks for taking the time to make this awesome video and the life advice which is very true everyone please in the words of David Allen Coe stop by and say Hello in there !

There is so much to love about this video. For me, reading the comments of those who "know" and then showing irrefutable evidence that they have been brainwashed gives me the warm and fuzzies. As I don't know Jay, this would be his kind act to me, a stranger.

I refer to this guys’ oil change video every time I change the oil in my bike. Changing my trans fluid to 75w-140 made a big difference in how my bike shifts.

Excellent presentation..I'm impressed although my 68 doesn't use a can filter, this is great info for the majority of riders out there.

I've always used Fram on all of my vehicles from work vans to motorcycles. I've never had any issues with any of the different models they offer. Great video!
