- Are Harley Davidson Motorcycles and parts Made in the USA? Is Harley Davidson an American company? How much of my bike is made in Taiwan? This Island Nation has a history of saving Harley Davidson from itself, and now they are positioned to do it again. The best Harley Davidson Oil Filter ever made and the current FRAM aftermarket Harley filter were both produced by a small Island Nation. What is so special about this place? If Harley is an all American company, why is it looking to Taiwan for parts and partners? In this video we will try to shine a light on those two questions and see if we can find some answers.

Our males are taught to reject masculinity. The newer generations dont care about motorcycles except cheap transportation. Our country has open borders and as far as i can tell anything built in america is actually built by mexicans, your doctors are from the middle east. Our culture is under attack by our own offspring tearing down statues and complaining about holidays like columbus day. Sad to say but i think the proud days of america are over. Our government is corrupt and bought and paid for. If i was younger i would not even have children as the future looks dim. We complain about russia but at least their president protects their borders. our president should be in gitmo. If you look at old footage prior to ww2 you will see american pride and american workers building everything. Things like hoover dam. The younger generation makes tick tok videos and need safe spaces in a world where everyone gets a trophy and nobody knows how to lose. They expect everything to be disposable so who needs quality.

You sir, are a saint. I change my own oil and with 3 Harleys on the road and all ridden a lot (over 260,000 Miles) I am switching to the Fram and going to save $6 per oil change and feel better about it. Watching the video of those old guys riding their motorcycles really hits home. I'm 76 and just hit 100 mph yesterday riding back from NH with a friend. You can't do this stuff in a nursing home. I'd really like to shake your hand. Thanks for the informative videos.

@Clovis Point I bought a set of gear wrenches not knowing they were manufactured in Taiwan, have used them for many years and they are of very good quality.
Greece is a country where motorcycles are deeply ingrained in the culture, too. We hold Taiwanese motorcycle parts and accessories in high esteem.

I am a shop owner and mechanic and deal with lots of made in Taiwan products and parts. Never been to Taiway and dont even know anyone from there, but, judging by the product they are producing one can tell that these products are built with quality in mind ..Thanks for your demo and explanation Jay

I had a rocker arm shaft on my '69 XLCH snap in two many years ago. I ordered a new aftermarket shaft that turned out to be made in Taiwan. I was amazed at the excellent workmanship. I've run it for several decades now and have had no problems.

Back in the 1990's, I was fortunate to work with a group of Taiwan Military men who came to the U.S. for Apache Helicopter training. They were fun, good natured, smart and just plain good people. They gave themselves "American" names which they were proud of. We would take them to different places and sights in the area on weekends. We always had a great time with them.
I would meet them at the office in morning and escort them to the cafe for breakfast and later, lunch.
When they finished their training, they gave everyone gifts. Somehow I was special because they gave me several gifts, which I still cherish to this day.
I'm not surprised by the quality of their products. Fram filters for this old Harley biker from now on!!

Watched both episodes before leaving this comment. 1st, been using Fram filters since 1972 on my Harleys, street cars and my drag cars. 2nd, my health is shot (my fault) but after seeing that video of those 5 men who have 15 years on me l finally got off my "woe is me" ass and headed over to my shop. Working on my 69 XLCH. I'm even looking forward to the kicker ratcheting or sending me airborne. Thanks man, you're killer!
The oil filter comparison video was eye opening.I ride a Goldwing and a Vmax so I’ve never purchased a HD filter but I have used Fram and I’ve also been told Fram is garbage which I never really took seriously and now I’m at least comfortable knowing they make a well built filter and also the commercial with the older men makes one wish we saw more of that here in the USA,and one last thing to add is that morning commute is crazy to watch. Thanks for the info.

I recently watched a video on used engine oil analysis. Guess who had the least amount of metals and impurities. Royal Enfield. Yup that little company from India. Wasn’t American, Japanese or Italian. Can’t always judge a book by its cover so to speak. Great vids mate 🤙

It's so strange to watch a Harley Davidson channel that manages to not be racist/anti-Asia (or tied ball-and-chain to the branded parts) without questioning the quality or possible alternatives. And by strange, I mean wonderful. The Taiwanese have also been building superb quality boats for multiple generations. That video at the end made me hop on my old Moto Guzzi and go for a ride, thank you

I recently ordered three FRAM oil filters for my 2006 Harley-Davidson Street Glide from Summit Racing. It took three weeks to arrive from Taiwan. These filters were not available locally as shipping from Taiwan was being restricted by the Chinese People's Liberation Army naval blockade practice. They did arrive, well packaged, in a secure cardboard box. Thank you for the videos Jay W Case.

A lesson learned. When you ride, you take extreme pride in what goes into your bike. You only want the best. And if you ride and build the parts, you only build the best with pride. You do the math. 70% vs 5%.

I've always believed there was a large disparity in the quality of products manufactured in mainland China versus Taiwan. Great video by the way.
Your comment sounds as you think they are the same county. They are two seperate countries that are in conflict with each other. One is trying to take over the other.
@@DaBinChe Many of the same products originate from these two countries. If I thought they were the same country I wouldn't have differentiated between them.
Taiwan manufactures all of the chips required to build all cars for some reason during covid19 the showrooms were eventually empty. I wanted a new car
I don't know how that happened , no one country should have that control I am sure if someone in North America took a shot they would figure it out. Still leaves the question why. Regards

@@daymaker5460 The company is TSMC. One reason why US doesn’t want a China to get into Taiwan as China doesn’t have the chip manufacturing capability that TSMC has and TSMC has some USA roots too. Intel, and other companies, are ramping up their chip manufacturing for cars in order to prevent an auto chip shortage from happening again because you’re right, no one country, or one company, should be dependent on supplying all chips to our cars.

Thanks Jay. I lived in Kaohsiung, Taiwan for a year and a half when I was younger and saw various small shops welding cycle frames of different sizes. It was not uncommon to see 3 people on a single motorcycle. The video shows almost all SCOOTERS coming down the ramp. It still takes the same mindset and similar skills to ride on two wheels with or without a V-TWIN for propulsion, especially if the road is crowded. Only time I was around more cyclists was in the 100th Harley celebration in Milwaukee. I rode from Houston , TEXAS to join the rally since I turned 50 years the same time. What an experience.

That said, what I want to comment on is the video you shared of the elderly Taiwanese gents. I'm a hairy old biker, 70 years young, and I've seen that video before. It never fails to bring a tear to my eyes. I hope in ten years when I'm their age, I'm still on 2. My wife, my soul mate and co-rider, died from cancer 9 years ago, and every time I throw a leg over the saddle, I think of her. Those fellows have the spirit so many of us lack or have lost somewhere along the way. I'm now with my new old lady, and she loves to ride, AND she's my age! Forever young.... Ride safe.
Two great filter videos. I'm going to have to cut a Triumph filter apart at the next oil change to see how their quality compares. The video of the old men bought a tear to my eye.

That video clip gave me chills, or it could be the ice water I was drinking. Nevertheless, it was inspiring. As having lived in Taiwan and planning to move back there in a few years, I can verify that most people ride motorcycles or motor scooters. When I was there, nothing over 150 cc was allowed, but they now have much bigger bikes available.

Awesome video man! I'm currently residing in Taipei at the moment and I'd have to say that most people that ride only know how to ride scooters. Some would still ride 125cc-150cc motorcycles. I think Harleys are too manly for most Taiwanese, unfortunately.
By the way, from what I've seen here over the past 18 years that I've lived here is that the laborers tend to pay more attention to detail in the manufacturing process (more than Chinese) and have more of a sense of pride in their work. They may not be the most innovative, but they can produce good quality stuff.

Asian motorcycle culture is something that has to be experienced to truly appreciate what it is. I have ridden a scooter about 1500 miles in and around Cebu City, Philippines; Scooter, or motorcycle, is the only way to get around with any efficiency. The reason is lane filtering. When traffic comes to a halt, all of the two wheelers thread their way between cars and trucks to get near the front. When the light turns green, it's full throttle into the clear space ahead, until you catch up to the next clump of cars and trucks, and then you repeat the process. As a motorcyclist in the USA, how many times have you imagined riding like that? In the Philippines (and other Asian countries) it is the normal mode.
I do this on a normal basis here in Cali.
@@DaBinChe , it is nothing like Cali, because the ratio of 2-wheel to 4-wheel traffic is vastly different, 2-wheelers are the majority. In the USA, even in Cali, 2-wheelers are an anomaly.

Jay the history of Soichira Honda finding a trashed old harley war bike left behind rode it everywhere is another story of detemination, I respect that man, I was born in 1942 the middle of WW 2 for Canada we declared war on Germany 1939. I have ridden Harleys since 1958, I saw the first Honda dream, turn signals for christ's sake. The bordrooms of MC builders in London laughed their asses off at Honda's bike efforts.............and the story continues to unfold, great videos thanks.
I own American made Delta bandsaws as well as many other such machinery made in the 30s 40s & 50s, and if I wanted anything made today, approaching that quality, it would have to come from Tiawan..I have some of those too.

I recently purchased CNC stabilizer links, brackets and motor mounts for my 2018 Sportster 48 from a company in Taiwan. The parts are much nicer, much lighter and better made. They look better, feel better and have drastically improved the handling of the bike. I'm also looking at a really nice CNC swingarm and Brembo p34 caliper setup, also from Taiwan!
Unfortunately they make good stuff there. Does anyone remember metal dashboards in our cars? The German engineers are even looking closely at what's going on with QC

I came across the video where you showed the inside of the filters. Then I watched this video. It's great content! I knew a long time ago that Harley Davidson was outsourcing parts. It's the way of the future. Any part you look at on a Harley could have been made over seas.
My problem is why did the filter made in the US look so bad. Are we as Americans not giving a shit about the products we make? Or is the corporate greed killing us as workers? We deserve a fair wage! I guess without that, we don't care about the products we put out.
I enjoyed your videos. It has made me do some thinking. Not about where I get my next filter, but where corporations are taking us as Americans. I know its all about the dollar. The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer. It's time to bring back pride in the good old US of A!!

This the greatest response to criticism! Quietly silencing it by the investigation and presenting the results. I suspect HD due to patents, on their version they had to make it smaller for a different designed check valve on the top. However that does not excuse the bad proportioning of the filter element. I am sure for Quality Control HD would have visited Fram in Taiwan and saw how they manufactured the filters and may have had of copies of the drawings of them!

I've watched alot of motorcycle oil filter videos. I've been riding motorcycles and driving cars since before I was old enough to get a driver's license. I've almost always changed my own oils and filters as well as other maintenance.
I've never even seen an oil filter that had somehow failed.
I change my engine oils as required by the manufacturers recommendation. So, I'm not too concerned about the quality of the filter.
What I would like to see is an independent analysis of used engine oils comparing different filters...

Ray, these 2 video's are the BEST! A bit late to the party, (gotta love the YT algorithm..). I've meant to get an oil filter cutter for a long time. I own 4 Buell's, I've wanted to do a "health check" every time I've done an oil change. Now I can! BTW, I've been using Fram filters on all of them for many years. Ya done good Ray, you have a subscribe from me. Forgot to mention, the imbedded video was even better this time around. I'd seen it a number of years ago, it's time to get some of my old riding buddies off their buts and back on 2 wheels.

They made pretty good bowling pin setter machines.

@@midas61 say what you want about AMF but my 1980 AMF FLT Tour Glide has over 300,000 miles on and still going strong. The quality of that bike is as good as anything before and after. Something I'm sure you don't know about that bike is that was the first year of the rubber Mount motor and 5 speed transmission. That frame ran nearly untouched until 2008. I know it's damn near identical to my 08 Road Glide. I guess maybe AMF wasn't as bad as most people think. Comparing my 1972 to my 1980 is comparing a Model T to a Cadillac.

We worked with Chiang Kai-shek and his forces to help defeat Japan in WW 2. He settled in Taiwan, a free man. The Chinese are still unhappy about that.
The efforts expended in the CBI Theatre is under appreciated by the Chinese government. My first instructor was a “Hump” pilot. No small feat by all.
Good insight in this. I retired from a Aircraft Repair company 3-2019. I accessed many Cockpits 737-NG. Most of the panels were not made in USA.
I owned a '73 H-D Super Glide which was a FLH from the neck back (with an ugly gas tank off of a H-D dirt bike made in Italy). The front end was off of a Sportster and the neck back was a FLH, big twin, 74 cu. in. with a 4 speed transmission. In 1974 I made some changes, one of which was to extend the tubes on the front end 4 inches. When I had the front end disassembled I saw stamping on the aluminum lower legs that said JAPAN. I was disappointed to say the least. This was when AMF owned Harley Davidson. AMF also made bowling balls and pin setting equipment for bowling alleys.
I worked for a major US H-D aftermarket parts distributor for many years. I know many of the Taiwanese manufacturers personally. They are very good at copying parts harvested from H-D, Rivera-Primo, BDL, Paughco, Dyna, S&S etc. Like other Chinese companies (even though Tiawan is a separate country, unless you ask China) they don't pay any attention to patents or copyrights. They might be good at making oil filters and mirrors but I would caution against using any of their other parts. There is very little R&D, and testing. Their parts vary greatly in quality. One exception would be EMGO. He has been making great parts for many brands of bikes for a long time.

I'm 68 and loved the video. I have been riding for 55 years. I just bought a Harley tri-glide. I must say my 2023 harley is not as good as mt 21 year old hondas.
Thanks for the great video. It serves to remind me the love of and for motorcycles is not confined to a particular motorcycle brand, gender, race, or ethnic culture, but transcends to the pure undying love of just riding no matter the conditions, constraints, or age.
