    Late last year the FL500 went on a bad back order, Ford went to Champ to make the FL2121B12 till the FL500 came off of back order, The FL500 is back. The reason I know this is because I work in a Ford dealership parts department.

      It’s funny and sad that the regular supplier A of FL500 - which is probably under a long term contract - can’t deliver due to some kind of a back log. But Ford can go to a completely different design produced by a completely different company B - which could take months to bring on line - to meet the temporary need and receive the filters in a timely manner to fill the need for a while. What’s wrong with company A that it can’t supply, but company B can?

      @@stevenw2866My guess is that Purolator’s first priority is supplying the demand for their own brand first before accepting/renewing contracts for private brands.
      Champ is not as heavily invested in selling their own branded products. If Purolator was having difficulty sourcing filter components to meet their demand obviously they would prioritize their products over private brands.

    • @stevenw2866
      @stevenw2866 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@prevost8686 You may be correct about the priority of M+H/Purolator in a time of shortage. In such a case, how does the assumed material shortage affect their other private label products such as NAPA and Wix filters? I want to assume that Ford/Motorcraft is a large enough client / customer that they want to keep them satisfied so that they don't need to take their business elsewhere. This is an interesting case that no doubt concerns facts we will never know about.

    • @donwyoming1936
      @donwyoming1936 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      It's simple. Purolator can't deliver. Champ already makes a compatible filter and can deliver. Champ didn't have to do anything but slap a Motorcraft sticker on their filter.

    • @donwyoming1936
      @donwyoming1936 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @stevenw2866 Quite a bit of logistics goes into manufacturing. Someone at Purolator might not have ordered enough steel or filter material a year ago. Demand may have spiked. Equipment may have failed. Not enough employees to run the equipment 3 shifts. Could have been a contract issue between them & Ford (price or quality). Maybe their entire production run of filters failed quality control.
      My wife worked for a major manufacturing firm, for one of their execs. The things that can go wrong are many. Like your shipment of widgets from Baltimore falling off a cargo ship headed to Wilmington.

    Outstanding job, Pete. So Ford is cheaping out their filter. What a shame. Let's face it, if you are spending $12 for a quart of synthetic oil, you are not going to mind buying more for the best made filter. Even if you aren't spending $12 per quart for oil, getting a best made filter should be a priority. I do not like that bypass valve stuck on the leaf spring. You've shown that they can leak at the place where the valve goes into the cartridge and I can't imagine those fiber endcaps can make a tight seal. The nylon cage doesn't bother me they can take pretty high temps. While I don't like all the sloppy glue but I do like that upper bypass valve and metal end caps on the old one. I'd definitely scoop up a big supply of the old filters if I used them. Then again I think I'll just stick to my Boss and XP filters.
    Keep 'em coming, Pete!

After two weeks, I bought a Mobil 1 filter and swapped out the Motorcraft and the morning rattle stopped. Excess glue on the old one, and also a reputation for tearing on those as well, means the old one is really a "Motorcrap" oil filter.
    The new one isn't awful, just wouldn't be my first choice. Fiber end caps aren't a problem as some think, since you'd have to find a case where they disentigrated, and I"ve never seen that happen on any brand that used fiber end caps.

    I love the newer High flow cores, but I prefer the old bypass system. I really dont see how the new ones pass Fords Specification. One note, I would use either since the new one has Felt end caps and not Resin impregnated cardboard. If the new one were made with open metal end caps, I would never use it due to terrible sealing flaws, but they used the best material for the design as it is completely covered on the ends, unlike Frams version with cardboard that is too small to keep the oil from mixing.

I've used Champ filters in our shop and on my own vehicles along with the Purolator and Motorcraft and have never had an oil filter issue in over three decades. The old FL-1A(made by Purolator) was a shop standard for Fords as long as I can remember. All four brands have been outstanding in our experience. The real key is changing the oil! Looks like a cheap replacement to me. I'll stick with the old one. If i was gonna use a cheap filter i would just buy the cheapest Fram. Which i used for years with no problem but that was when i changed oil every 3000 miles. Thanks for tearing into it.

    The new Motorcraft is an example of "I've got a friend that can do it cheaper"
