I bought a red Dodge Hornet with the Track Pack a few weeks ago and it really is a lot of fun to drive. I generally drive pretty relaxed in town but on highways, I'll get on it from time to time. I'm clocking in around 5.9-6.0 seconds 0-60 mph at ~700 ft above sea level. Although, I would say the car shines in 30-70 mph passing power. You'll be cruising along and then get on it and the car will surprising pull really hard with a pretty wide power band. Time will tell how reliable the car will be, so I went ahead and got an extended warranty from the dealer I bought it from. I cross-shopped this with a CX-30/CX-5, Kona N, and a Crosstrek/Outback.

Great review as always guys but I still HATE Dodge for killing the potential Alfa sales by doing this version. As a recent new Alfa owner and now fan/supporter of the brand, they don't deserve the rep they currently have anymore in my opinion. Sadly the Tonale is going to be too close in price to the Stelvio which will also hurt it's sales unless people just want the smaller size with the mild hybrid.
The reality is the vast majority of consumers will never know that the Hornet and Alfa are the same car. The general public is pretty clueless about these things, and have no idea what Stellantis is.
@@The_Stanmanexactly. Same as with other brands. The average person doesn’t know A4/Jetta, Civic /Now Integra, etc are basically the same car. Every other brand does it and they sell. Biggest problem is Alfa doesn’t market for shi*! They also don’t have a line up to compare with the big dogs…and they’ve only been back for a few years so they have a huge disadvantage.
First year model and a mix of all the low reliability based vehicle manufacturers... I've stated in other videos about the Hornet that if Dodge (Stellantis) can bring the dependability up to the level of at least the outgoing models of the Charger/Challenger within the first two model years, I think they will be able to gather up some market share. People like me will be watching them closely for recalls and dependability issues... especially major ones like the Dart had. Their non-V8 engines have not had the best track record over the history of the company. I want to see them succeed. We can always use another successful auto manufacturer, because it makes everyone else step up their game. They have some great ideas for this initial entry vehicle, executing those with a high level of quality and dependability is going to be key.
I'm really curious to see how reliable these things end up being because it's basically a combination of the least reliable major brands. I think the Hornet looks better than the Alfa though.
@@flacjacket I understand the mainstream volume 2.0 turbo Alfa models are mostly fine, but the V6 models are nightmares for a lot of owners. Which mostly backs up what you're saying overall, because they're not selling many V6s compared to 2.0Ts; most of what they sell is offering competitive reliability. That's all with the longitudinal RWD cars though, time will tell how this FWD platform does.

Great review,... I'm also liking the Hornet quite a bit... They need to do an SRT version, maybe the hybrid with the 2.0, or an SRT with the 3L Hurricane turbo straight 6.
@TheRealCatof The Hurricane-4 isn't really a that new. It's a corporate engine that's been used in the Wrangler and Cherokee for years now. So there’s been some years to monitor its long term reliability. Dodge is just trying to market this motor as being extremely new/fresh
@TheRealCatof I only said the motor itself is not as new as Dodge and all these reviewers are trying to make it seem. Nothing about whether it’s reliable or not. Learn to read
My Mazda CX-30 with the basic engine (191HP, 186lb-ft) has been clocked to 60 in 7.3 seconds. I was smart enough to buy the basic S (added dealer leather) just over 3000 lbs. The turbo CX-30 weighs in at over 3500 lbs. so you lose a good amount of your acceleration to weight. I posted this to say the breaks are good, and the handling excellent, and it's made in Japan not Italy where turbo charging is required for performance.
Except the Kona N is a full 1.5 seconds faster to 60, handles way better, and actually sounds good. The marketing for this car was all over the place when I was shopping for my N, and I looked at the Hornet as a comparison for about 2 minutes before laughing at the performance specs and closing the tab.
@thewardenduncan9496 Agreed. Like the Kona N 10 x better. I also just purchased a 2023 Elantra N, which so far has been awesome. I have been going back in forth between Veloster N, Kona N, Kia Stinger GT2, and the Elantra N.
@@godzilla7391 I probably would have gone Elantra N if they had one anywhere in my state when I was buying. Also might have gone Veloster N if the interior wasn't so much worse than the other two, lol. But as it stands, I came from a 2014 WRX, and I definitely prefer the Kona N to that, even with the lack of AWD.
Didn't know this car existed until I saw this video! I appreciate the styling, it's funky but stylish, I tend to go for stuff like that. I'm really sus on Dodge reliability tho, though I guess this engine is one of their better ones...how's the transmission? I thought the Dart was great when it launched a decade ago but now you don't see them because they didn't last similar to the Caliber before that and the Neon before that. Until proven otherwise, that's what I'm gonna expect from this Hornet.
Is anyone else getting some serious Mitsubishi vibes from the front view? I like that it’s got more of an old school 1980s thru early 2000s small grill between the headlights and the large grill down below but not the MASSIVE grills that are as tall as the whole front of the car that’s been so popular for the past 10 years.
1: Discontinue Dodge Charger and Challenger that could be had with a V8 for low 30s even just a few years ago. 2: Make cornball badge replaced 4 cylinder SUV with Italian reliability. 3: Charge more than what a V8 muscle car used to cost pre-Covid.
I love when automakers make special badges for their vehicles. Toyota does that a lot and it’s one of the reasons why i like them. Too bad that it’s usually reserved for their domestic market. Like the Venza, which is called a Harrier everywhere else in the world, used to have a harrier badge, but the current generation don’t get them anymore, even on Harrier named models.
I am Old, Stodgy, & and Conservative. The mature design & build of my Dodge Mini Van served me well. Darn seats weighted a TON though (year before fold-ins). Hopefully my Third Generation, Kia Forte (non-turbo) will serve me well also. I would enjoy fancier, I just don't have the time or money to fritter away anymore.
It seems like a great car for its segment. Obviously reliability is a concern, but it’s unfair to hold that against it before it actually has time to prove itself.
@@purwantiallan5089 No, it’s impossible for a brand to improve, you have to believe in and regurgitate the same stereotypes forever! There is plenty of “reliability” talk for this dodge based on previous models and comparison to Mazda but the 2.3 Turbo from Mazda had plenty of issues with Turbo failure , timing chain issues as well as SV-T problems. Secondly , I never heard these types of reliability concerns when testing Kia/Hyundai/Genesis when they consistently have fire related problems.
Kia/Hyundai have a particular V6 that is notorious for failure and they rarely even question in anymore. Then they'll slap another 100k mile warranty on the new engine rather than re-engineer it. I've known two people who have had this engine fail and be replaced: one being my girlfriend, another being a coworker... just a few months ago LOL!
the 2.3 Turbo was sourced from Ford, Mazda uses a 2.5 now which looks to be Toyota level reliable. With regards to the Kia/Hyundai/Genesis their theta 2 engines are notorious for bombing themselves.
@@Jackinacox You've got it backwards. The Mazda L-series engines were shared with Ford, but they were a Mazda design. Mazda stopped developing the LF in 2010 when they switched to the trouble-prone Skyactive-G engines. Ford continued on developing the series for much longer. It was part of a cost sharing arrangement. In exchange for the use of the L-series engines, Mazda used Ford Duratec V6 engines.
@SirOsisofLiver the skyactiv engines have been rock solid reliable. Only the first 2 years they had some carbon related issues like most DI engines at the time. Other than that, they have been Toyota reliable.
I thought you would have at least mentioned the similarities to the Kona N, being a FWD performance cross-over, roughly the same horsepower, adaptive suspension, and "go fast button"

I test drove a base model Hornet, and it had the hardest seats i've ever sat on. Literally hard has a wood plank. I guess they're not the same seats has the upper trims.
The GT is the base model
@@joshuamcgarity1109 well, the “base” GT then. It had 17 inch silver wheels with little brakes.
We're they almost like hard plastic? I've encountered those in some newer Jeeps I've ridden in. I assumed it was for the intended "outdoorsy" audience to easily clean mud and debris. No clue why they'd be in this though.
I noticed Thomas never actually commented on how it handles either
I have the base gt. I find the seats to be comfortable. I guess it's up to the person
This intro is unparalleled. Credit to the sound designer for that bee sounding intro, I love that the music is so customized for each car. Really makes the video pop.
Love it!! I didn’t know it was correlated with Alfa Romeo! Love it!! My friend just got one traded in a Volvo X60 for it!
Not gonna lie, I'd watch an entire fly review. 😁

Good info, thank you! Dealer by me is getting the GT + soon. My Cherokee lease is about to be done. Looking to take one of these. Give it a shot. I am on my 4th jeep. Never one issue. The Cherokee is a little monster.

Does your gear shift feel kind of hard to shift? I feel like I have to give a little force when changing the gears 😩
@@1kenstar not particularly, make sure you squeeze the trigger on the shifter all the way before shifting between reverse, park, drive, etc. My previous vehicle was a 2000 Dodge Durango and the gear shifter was on the steering column and that required more force than shifting on the Hornet.
that is such a cool little ride! if the GLH gets the I6 (which i know it wont because the original was a turbo 4 and brands these days rarely increase cylinder count) i'll camp by my nearest dealership to put an order in.
I feel a dart scenario coming . Cool at first , then Dodge disowned it .
Dodge cannot afford to disown it. They don't have the vehicle line up to disown a vehicle like this. This is a very important vehicle for them. It has to succeed.
@@ducktails1695Dodge has more than enough money to disown this. The Challenger and Charger have butched the market share of GM and Ford recently. The only reason why this car was even made is due to emission regulations on manufacturers.
Wait, the Dart was cool at first? I don't recall that ever being the case.
The Dart was never cool. It was just Big 3 fanboys swearing it would be a class-leading compact, when it was one of the clunkiest. Shame, I thought it looked great.
@@victreebel170 Good news...Toyota like the Dart looks too and made the new Prius.
4:11 I LIKE sequential shifter modes. If I'm the passenger, I can look ahead and shift at the points that are the most efficient. If I'm driving, it makes me feel like I'm driving a sequential race transmission.
"...and I'm JAMES".......that's gotta be the most enthusiastic introduction yet!...lol.
I've always wondered why almost no car manufactures ever pads that center console where your knee rests. They all seem to overlook the comfort there complete. Across town you may not notice, but after an all-day cross country you will definitely feel a tender spot where your knee has rested against the center console for hours.
In any event, Dodge has always been about affordable performance. That was the Dodge brothers main driving force, and goes back to the start of the company.
This is an Italian car
@@TH-camuser1aa my alfa giulia has padding on the center console where my knee goes. The tonale and hornet are simply smaller and cheaper cars.

Cool vehicles and lighyears more reliable than Dodge 🤣 all my friend's Challengers and Chargers (3 Chargers and 2 Challengers between 4 friends) are always breaking down. My friends Charger blew a head gasket going 72mph with cruise control set! Literally just cruising. Car only had 27k on the odometer. ThT look James gives the camera when he “launches”it - hilarious!!!
I think it's a nice little car with some legitimate potential in the upper models. Make it look a bit more aggressive in the R/T and above models and it should be a solidly good looking car for what it is. Also, James dropping a Benedict Arnold reference got me good
Before buying, check the Recall, it is a very good car but it already has two recalls: 1) the battery cable shorts and the car stops moving 2) the forward collision sensors turn on when the car has not collided
The term "backhanded compliment" comes to mind. I love you guys, and I know that this is a tough car to get excited about. I appreciate that you kept everything in perspective.
I agree, 30K makes sense for this car. Maybe some maniac 20-something year old tuners will milk these things into an enthusiast car.
It’s a fun different SUV, but ya small SUVs are hard to get excited about now. This is one I genuinely want to check out tho.
This kinda reminds me of the one amg crossover that Mercedes’ made forgot the name wasn’t it the gla 45 amg? Where it was to small to be a true crossover but to heavy to be a hatchback nobody liked it and the thing is super cheap to buy now maybe this ends up like that where it’s in a purgatory of to sporty for the normies and to heavy and normie for the enthusiasts
They should discontinue it and save us all the headache.
Give it 6 months to a year after they hit the streets and you'll see them challenging Corvette, Mustangs and other more popular "tuned" street cars.
The reliability probably sucks, but dang this is a good value proposition
Look at the Jeeps with the 2.0L Turbo. It's the same engine. The concerns are likely way overblown.
Probably? :)
@@imnotusingmyrealname4566 Considering what's offered for vehicles these days, no concern is overblown. These two guys certainly did nothing to allay my fears.
Yep. TFL did a 4WD review and the hornet Christmas treed the dash. Dodge is crap

As always another great video and review so well done. But that intro with the flies made me damn near spot my coffee out. Especially when you said, “is your name Be drillin, cause I’ll be drillin you later”…. That was amazing😂

My brother is a big dodge guy (even a main tech at a dealership) and he’s gotten to drive a few. They are nice day to day cars, but definitely not performance machines from the factory. Really hoping there’s a lot of aftermarket support for these because they are beautiful vehicles

I could see the aftermarket for this car explode in the short future, so long as its able to be tuned. There is so much potential here.
You’re joking
Gotta put this up against a Kona N and drag race them!
No need to. 0-60 in 6 and a half seconds is slow compared to the N
Yeah I get 4.7 to 60 in my Kona
Lol the N would embarrass this car
Even the next model up in performance of these things is gonna get destroyed be a Kona N lol.
You're right, nobody but Alfa should be the one to kill potential Alfa sales, because they're the best at it after all ;)
Agreed. Alfa needed an entry level model. And the Hornet took that away.
The reality is the vast majority of consumers will never know that the Hornet and Alfa are the same car. The general public is pretty clueless about these things, and have no idea what Stellantis is.
Alfa dealers in my area are basically running a BOGO sale on left over 22’s.
@@The_Stanmanexactly. Same as with other brands. The average person doesn’t know A4/Jetta, Civic /Now Integra, etc are basically the same car. Every other brand does it and they sell.

The new Official Car of BRAMPTON!! Buddy Buddy lets do this!
I'm really curious to see how reliable these things end up being because it's basically a combination of the least reliable major brands. I think the Hornet looks better than the Alfa though.
Modern Alfas are not having reliability issues any more so than Audi, BMW or Merc.

Is it? Do we actually know the reliability of the new motors?
Alfa Romeo and Dodge have garbage reliability. Anyone that buys their cars knowing that is a dummy.
@The Real Cat of 2020 good to know reliability is based on feelings and but facts🤷♂️

That 2.3 was over a decade ago. That's hardly a comparison. Dodge had been shite for 40 years
@SirOsisofLiver the skyactiv engines have been rock solid reliable. Only the first 2 years they had some carbon related issues like most DI engines at the time. Other than that, they have been Toyota reliable.
