  • I'm playing the violin for exactly 2 years now, so I collected clips from day 1 until today and I made this 2 year progress video.
    I always wanted to play the violin, but I thought I was too old to learn and that you needed to have some special talent to be able to learn this. Well, luckily I found out that's all nonsense. You don't learn this with talent, you learn this through hard work.
    I've had weekly violin lessons ever since the start and I practice about 1-2 hours a day, 4-5 days a week. Besides my daily technical exercises, I tried to play my favorite songs, had a go at making a few music videos, met a pianist friend to play duets with, played on stage during recitals and concerts and I did some collabs with other musicians from around the world. Last but not least, I passsed my "grade A" exams in music (both theoritical and practical). I don't think I've ever learned so much in my entire life!
    I hope this video is insightful and gives you a clear and realistic view on the process of learning to play the violin.

      I also wonder about that... I've played the violin since 7 yrs now and I'll maybe buy an electric violin in the end of this year. For me, it wouldn't have been good for me to buy one at the beginning bc I needed to practise the tunes (I was maybe 8 yrs at that time). About my intonation:
    In these first 2 years, I didn't care too much about intonation. I was so enthusiastic and motivated, I just wanted to play and enjoy it. Not ideal, but not being too picky kept me excited and motivated instead of perfectionist and frustrated. After making this video, I started paying close attention to intonation and it improved drastically. Now, almost 5 years into playing, things are going very well and a 5 year progress video is in the works now. 🙂

    You are doing very well for only being at two years. However, I believe instead of moving on you more complicated songs, you should focus a little bit more on tuning. I understand you are still learning, but it's better to backtrack and be in tune than struggle with it later on.
    I know this from experience. I never bothered to count when I was first learning so I still have issues with rhythm and beats of the notes even if I can play quickly and in tune.

    • @MarijkeViolin
      @MarijkeViolin  5 ปีที่แล้ว +116

      True, I find it hard to play everything in tune. I'm working on it. Funny enough, rythm and counting on the other hand somehow comes way more natural to me.

      vicky robins
      tuning: the G-D-A-E strings should be in tune. To tune your violin, you start from A, then you tune E (with A), then D (with A), then G (with D) - playing them as fifths.
      intonation: your finger should hit the right notes in the fingerboard coz even a millimeter off can make it out of tune
      not a violinist but watching TwoSet makes me understand hehe

    You really need to work on your tuning. Maybe try using tapes. Most kids use it, which help them learn wear to place their fingers.

      True. Only tapes aren't the answer, listening is. Didn't pay too much attention to it in the beginning but now I do and luckily it's getting better.

      @@MarijkeViolin Actually, tapes are definitely the answer, at first. You really need to learn what the notes should sound like first, then you should be able to take off your tapes. Trust me, it will improve your intonation enormously. I would like to say that I am impressed by your improvement and determination.

      @PhantomFan1a 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I have been learning once a week since January 14th this year and never once did I use tapes or stickers as it meant you had to learn without assistance where to place your fingers and I have had no problems learning - every now and again I still don't place my fingers correctly but I am still learning so it is early days yet.

    I have been playing for 7 years now, and I definitely think your progress is amazing. Your bow tone during the first year is much smoother than any beginner I've ever seen. Especially as an adult with much less free time, it's obvious you've put a lot of dedication into it! And another thing that's not mentioned often and that I want to say is that your confidence is very refreshing. I've seen so many beginner students that are very unsure of their playing, and to see someone with the courage to put it out on the internet is amazing.

      Hi, thank you for that kind compliment! Actually, I have lots of free time; I work parttime and I have hardly any obligations besides that, so that gives me plenty of practice time. And thank you! I knew beforehand I was going to mess up, but it's the learning curve that counts. I wanted to make a realistic violin progress channel so I include the mess-ups as well.

Violin is one of the instruments I want to learn. I'm currently learning piano and guitar. I had the same multi-instrumentalist impulse at 21. That was about when I picked up violin. Now, 20 years later, I play and teach piano, guitar and violin professionally, so it definitely can be done. Its usually not possible to practice enough to be able to play three instruments at an equally high level of technique though. Definitely the case with myself. The trade off has been worth it though, since I never had any interest in being a technical genius in the first place - I wanted breadth of experience so I could write and orchestrate more effectively. Oh yeah and somewhere in the meantime I discovered the enormous pleasure of playing the viola, which is essentially a slightly bigger violin. In a classical setting it’s my favorite part to play, a way underrated and totally gorgeous instrument.

      Papyrus Senpai guitar makes violin much easier. And learning piano helps with just about everything because the notes are in a set place and you can learn what sharps and flats sound like. I think you’re making perfect choices that will make learning violin much easier.

    All this people telling her to focus on intonation and other stuff. Guys, she DOES know of course the things she has to work on because she has been recording herself! Some of those things you can work and work for years and are going to be just fixing with time. Please if you are going to say something is better to give an exact advice or exercise SOMETHING THAT SHE CAN USE. Saying -Oh, you should work on intonation blah blah- is not an advice. Try to be helpful for others, and do not judge.
    By the way, I admire you, you are doing great and in your music I can see not only effort and hours of hard work but also passion. Something that some people with more than 10 years playing still doesn't have.

      Hi, im a piano player but i think this applies to me too, I don’t know if she is self taught or not, but I think she is for the most part. Being a self taught player means that there isn’t anyone to tell you what you should Improve and/or what you’re struggling with, therefore she might not be aware of that or maybe she didn’t realize how important it is. Of course she did amazing progress no one denied that, but some constructive criticism would really help. In fact, I would love it if I was taught that I have a bad habit when playing. Amazing playing Marijke!

I play for my school and practice almost 2 hours everyday during school and 3 days a week in summer for a couple hours. You’ve made actually incredible progress. Keep working on your intonation. A good tip to train to know when you’re perfect with your first (best place to start) is the A on G will make your A string vibrate, E on D will vibrate the E, D on A, D string. For some reason, the B on your E string will ring, too. ❤️

      Indeed, listening is very important for playing the violin. There are different methods and children learn in a different way. My teacher doesn't use tapes, only with children and very temporary. Playing in tune isn't easy and I'm still learning, but I'll get there.

    • @MarijkeViolin
      @MarijkeViolin  5 ปีที่แล้ว +73

      I'm not sure if you want to be helpful, because I find your comment not helpful at all. You shouldn't blame my teacher for my progress, especially since you don't even have one yourself. It's true I need to pay more attention to intonation, but my teacher is not to blame for that. And there are many teachers who advice against using tapes because students must learn to use their ears. I trust my teacher on this one, so I will continue as I'm doing.

    You're such an inspiration. I used to play the piano when I was 3 until I was 5-6 for free because my kindergarten teacher - who was also a pianist - saw the potential I had the moment I memorized the piece she played for us in just by watching her doing it once... so she would give me private piano lessons. After I started the primary school, I did't have the chance to see my piano teacher anymore,but she offered to give me lessons at my house, but I had to buy a piano. My mother didn't want to invest because it cost much, considering our financial status back then.
    My dream crashed and until now (I am 21) I am afraid of touching the piano, I hate seeing people playing the piano, there's a part of me that can't accept the fact that I can't be a pianist anymore...
    But you kinda motivate me to restart again. If ever I will... you'll be one of the person I'll owe you a favor.

    you are very ambitious, it's great in 2 year . to be honest you can’t play in tune , it’s pity because for a string player it is the more important . You should practice every songs with a tuner and you will hear when you’re not playing in tune .... but for the right hand is good (especially for the piece of Lindsey stirling)

    You’ve progressed really far but I think you should keep working on being in tune rather then skipping straight to Lindsey Stirling. You’ll end up having to backtrack when you reach a certain point and will find there is no hope for progression if you can’t play in tune in 1st position. Amazing ambition but focus on the basics first. They’re called building blocks for a reason - if the foundation level isn’t right and you try to build on it more and more, eventually the tower will collapse xx

      Violin is a very daunting instrument to learn. If a person only endlessly practiced scales as a beginner, they’d give up before they’d finished a year. When I was a beginner, I’d challenge myself to music that was above my skill level just for fun, and to stretch myself a bit and see what I could play. She demonstrated in the beginning of the video her focus on technique. I think it’s important to have fun while learning.

    Darling you are doing a great effort, and that is super admirable.
    Just as an advice, slow down a bit; you can play many songs but your technique is not as good as it can become if you focus on the right things. Tuning (that’s the main one) left hand relaxation (above all the wrist, which looks a bit strange and can get you an injury), your links between up and down bows and tonalisation.
    If you go for those ones with the same passion, you can become a great musician😊

    I know this video is a year old, but for someone who started late in their years i think you are doing quite well. I'm an orchestra teacher and I also give private lessons. My husband does symphony and orchestra teacher too. I hope i don't offend you but I wanted to just offer a few tips.
    For intonation I strongly encourage the tapes. At least for the first three years. I still have the tapes on my violin particularly in the upper positions. You can buy the don't fret tapes where you stick them on the fingerboard. As long as the strings are tuned properly the tapes work. It will help along with using your ear so you know you're hitting the right pitch. After the first year with the tapes you should be able to hit the pitches without having to look at the fingerboard all the time. My husband even had high schoolers he had to put the tapes on their instruments to help with their intonation
    When you're using the bow make sure you bend your pinky, and not keep it straight this will help so your fingers don't get numb.
    When you shift to higher positions try not to make that sound where you hear the sliding. Shifting should be effortless to where the audience doesn't hear.
    I would recommend you use the books Suzuki Violin school. Essential Elements for Strings, Kayser -- Elementary and Progressive Studies, Op. 20 for Violin, and Sevcik -- Shifting the Position and Preparatory Scale Studies, Op. 8 for Violin

      Hey guys, it's awesome to know that you want to learn violin!! But being self-taught isn't the best way to learn sometimes. It's admirable that you (like me) tried to learn on your own, but get an expert. There are small details only a professional will be able to help you out with. The first time I had an actually trained violinist teach me, I was about a year in being self-taught. I had to start from the most basic stuff all over because my elbow was moving too much! There were small tweaks she had to make with me, like posture and intonation. I've been learning for about three years now, and I'm not that far along, actually. I don't have access to a teacher or lessons where I live, and on top of that I'm trying to finish my senior year, so I haven't too much time to practice full-time. Don't be like me, please 😂. Take online lessons, at least. Like a Masterclass, which would be great. Sadly, I don't have that much musical talent either and my fingers are you stiff for this, so I'll probably drop it soon. But I wish you the best of luck!!

      Thanks! My first violin one was a rental. After 3 months, I bought the black electric violin (a Bridge Aquila). After 1 year, I could rent a better violin from my music school and returned the other rental. I switched my electric violin for the same model with 5 strings at the store where I bought it, but returned it after a month or so (I wasn't pleased with having 5 strings. I made a video about this as well, by the way). So in the end, I have played on four violins so far, but I have two: my rental acoustic and my own electric. I prefer an acoustic violin, but an electric is fun for performing and sound effects.

    During the first week the best option is to pluck and work on the way you hold the bow and the way your left hand holds the instrument instead of directly going in with the bow and playing open string notes. I noticed on your 4th week, your bow was constantly moving bow lanes, which would’ve been a good concept to work on in your first one or two weeks. Also, even when you were at the 1-2 year mark, your bow was constantly in the piano lane, even though you were trying to make a forte sound. When you do that, it often makes an airy or even slightly creaky sound.
