I love watching her eye movements. Sometimes she watches the strings, sometimes not. I can only imagine what goes on in the mind when you play a piece like this. Incredible... on so many levels!
Sustained high complexity mechanical tasks require the mind to completely focus on buffering chunked down segments of the performance, whether consciously or not. The performers actual conscious thoughts are pretty much blacked out in pure flow state bliss. It's a ridiculously fulfilling feeling.
It's actually pretty easy to figure out. Play a rhythm game. Just any of them. Even in the rarified world of virtuoso violinists, her bow technique is extraordinary. She is playing the original bowing used by Paganini when he performed this. Many of the top performers, being afraid to be seen to make mistakes, play this at breakneck speed but with separate bows.....of course the audiences think they are wonderful because to many, speed is everything. But this bowing used here is difficult to control as the intonation and clarity of execution are paramount to the meaning of the music, which can really only be understood by the player.....it is after all a study.

Your skill is so refined and exquisite that it’s abundantly apparent even to a layman such as myself. This is ridiculously great. Michael Rabin's version has always been my favorite, but there are parts of this that even top that. Her phrasing is unique. I've never heard it played that way before. Most violinists just tear through this caprice, but she is able to bring out accents that others don't. That concert hall in Berlin just amplifies the superlative playing. Remarkable!
Her phrasing is not unique, its the original bowing as composed by Paganini. Everyone else (except Markov and a few others) has been playing the piece wrong, or at least not keeping to the score.

I am honestly without words. The display of in my opinion, such a wide spectrum of emotion translated though a single instrument within three minutes is astonishing. The way this woman achieves that through not only her skill and performance, but through the selection of venue with its aesthetics and acoustics, only shows that, not only can she understand music to the greatest degree, but that through her performance, also understands and complements Paganini for his extreme desire and aptitude to communicate such emotion. Brilliant performance.
Well, 11yo prodigy would probably still be unpolished. Even for this piece, I have to say Ray Chen's 19yo version sounds more impressive than her 19yo version to me though.
I’ve listened to other great violinists tackle this piece and thus far Sumina is THE Standard. Itzak Perlman, Shlomo Mintz and others: all do well, ranging from 92% to 98% but this rendition by Miss Studer is a SOLID 100%. Others seem like they’re rushing through the piece or their phrasing and interpretation is either cookie-cutter or too finessed. Also the clarity is mind-blowing. Laury,
I agree.
Look up the appropriate usage/definition for "song" in classical music, it'll give you more credibility.
It's propably from people who think their culture is superior to white culture, who then watch this video and quickly close it in fear, before having to admit to themselves that below european culture there is long nothing while above it there is absolute silence.

At the time of this comment there were 320 thumbs down. That probably means that there are at least 320 aspirant violinists out there who can't play this bowing after hours of practice and who can't stand to see someone dash it off with ease. It probably makes it worse that Sumina's interpretation is so musical. There is a great talent here worth following.
Those 320 do not even know how many hours she has spent to get to her level... The answer is hard work. .

Many of the top performers, being afraid to be seen to make mistakes, play this at breakneck speed but with separate bows.....of course the audiences think they are wonderful because to many, speed is everything. But this bowing used here is difficult to control as the intonation and clarity of execution are paramount to the meaning of the music, which can really only be understood by the player.....it is after all a study.
yeeesssssss
I'm not really familiar with the piece or how it's "supposed" to be, to me this sounds great. I don't think I want it to be played significantly faster than this (a little would be fine).
Person Oisels At 0:32 it’s three notes in a single bouncing downbow, then one note upbow to recover, then three more downs, etc. It’s easier to play just down up down up, every note a separate bow.

Your skill is so refined and exquisite that it’s abundantly apparent even to a layman such as myself. I know nothing about violin pieces and composers except that Paganini is incredibly technically difficult, pushing the violin to the limits in terms of the sounds it can make, you played it so passionately it was thrilling to listen to
i can see the monocle and stashe twirling from LEAGUES away.
Ok perv relax.
The bowing is superb. Clear, even tone, and subtle dynamics. This piece is a bitch to play.

+yifuj "Her phrasing is not unique, its the original bowing as composed by Paganini. Everyone else (except Markov and a few others) has been playing the piece wrong, or at least not keeping to the score."

No one else that I’ve heard can quite match this level or brilliance.

The room and violin are obviously 100%, but this kid plays it.
