Good video, I like how they gave you the spec of 2" slack for flat track tractors. Very useful, the factory manual for my D4E is very vague in this procedure!

I looked up the adjustment for a D4E (prefix 28X) and you're right, it is not that helpful. I have seen the same adjustment procedure for other CAT machines where they have you tighten the track all the way tight and make a mark on the roller frame. You then let grease out and loosen the track until it moves back 3/8" (10mm) from the all the way tight position.
That might be fine and good to adjust the track, though it does seem to waste some grease, and it isn't very helpful in doing a quick check of the adjustment without going through the whole adjusting process.

@@JimMackHeavyEquipment yes I spoke with in the meantime a longtime Caterpillar mechanic and he said on the D4Es with double upper rollers to adjust to 1.5” slack from the from roller to the idler. He said he sees no reason to tighten all the way up and then back off to the .5” of slack on the ram. I could see caterpillar specifying their procedure to pull all the slack all the way out of the track and then when loosened the 1/2” it’s to a specific pretension amount. I may try it each way on each side of the track, operate it a short while and see what the slack ends up on each side. He said on a single upper roller track to definitely go for the 2” of slack from the roller to the main front idler. Hopefully my seals are still good, if it loosens back up, I will have to replace my tension cylinder seals. My D4E is a 69X
