I have no idea why I'm binge-watching old safety videos, but here we are. Next up, "Getting off on the right foot". See you fellow junkies in the trainyard.
Those two thumbs down were from two of the guys hurt in the video. On the other hand, who else thought that some screams were needed in the soundtrack - you know, to help get the point across? Yeah, I've got a dark sense of humor.
3:51 at least he was tied off. Before safety harness there were safety belts, if the fall didn't get you, the sudden jerk deceleration caused the body to jack knife resulting in injury
The forklift training I got was basically like this. Showed me the controls and observed me for a few minutes, handed me my cert. Luckily I have a fair amount of common sense and already knew about center of gravity, etc, because it was never mentioned once. nor was inspection.
My local operator engineer union allowed operators 2 beers on lunch until 2018 and the mechanic shop I used to work at once you hit ot for the day the beers were broken out also at that shop we contracted with a local hoa to maintain the levi after hours. So 5 guys in 30 year old crawler loaders and a d5 dozer would work on the levi absolutely piss drunk. Best summer job ever oh that summer job was in 2022
Never get under the bucket without having it locked u would be amazed how quit a bucket can fall if a hydraulic line bust there was a guy my dad told about a backhoe bucket falling and he just laughed day or two later he was under it working and didn't have it locked and the hydraulic line broke and the bucket drove him in the ground and killed him
0:53 - 1:00 ... that background music wouldn't happen to have been composed by Ib Glindemann would it? That sounds very similar to a bit he did in his tune "Construction Site," which fun fact ended up later on being used -as the top of the hour sounders for 1010 WINS in New York - at least until the 90, when updated sounders still derived from Construction Site were used.
the scariest danger ive probably ever shaken hands with off the top of my head was work on a platform raised by a forklift that had no working brakes and i almost got my head pancaked between the railing of the platform and the sign i was helping put up. good thing the driver knew how to save me :P
No, 1981 was more like 1970s in feel and appearance. I think 1971 would look more like the 1960s. Surely there are some trucks or cars that can date it? Remember, 1981 would be the release date, so it would be filmed in the late 70s, and much of the equipment would be a few years old, especially the stuff they are crashing and wrecking.
2:29, in all my life, I have never seen a model like this before, with its cab on the drivers side of the frame, not centered.....what dumbass designed that thing?!?!?!?!?!?!? that cab placement itself is dangerous, if it where to roll over on the drivers side, that driver would be dead!! even though it has ROPS, it would've been severely damaged by a rollover on the drivers side.
Does anyone know what the deal is with the very small buckets on some of these loaders is, like the Cat being used as a lift? Or why the Cats are painted Terex green?
If the equipment is tasked with hauling heavy, high density stuff like stone, they will fit a smaller capacity bjucket to make sure operators aren't overloading it. The big buckets are just to make sure you can lift a large amount of low-density material.
Cat 950h and a 972m here at a biomass powerplant it’s not hard for sure but I’ve seen plenty of people including myself fuck it up sometimes but it’s a lot less sketchy then my 91 f250 with a bad steering box
I had a backhoe driver once back right up into someone’s car with the bucket. He did not even get fired and he was aloud to continue to drive the backhoe and this was in 2019. The car was almost completely destroyed. Amazing how people like this still find employment. There is always some idiot trying to get the work done faster always.
New machine operated hitting the side of the dump truck is actually good practice at a certain workplace I'll not mention. I remember it was good if you could get the load In the trucks skip
If they were serious about safety back then why weren't cup holders factory fitted. I'd like to know the statistics of the amount of crashes due to only having one hand free while having to hold your beer in the other hand.
That last operator that was a seasoned operator but just did the dramatics for this video, of all the controls why would he turn the steering wheel backing down the ramp? If he lifted the bucket while driving forward away from the hopper it might be more believable.
When i was maintenance at a metal yard, i was buzzing around the yard in a junk Chevy Venture minivan. An old timer running the CAT 980K thought it'd be funny to snag the rear of my van as he passed me. I moved over further and further but that machine just kept steering closer (hes headed opposite direction, straight for me). I aint no weenie and if he was gonna hit me, i wanted him to maybe get a jolt from it too (machine tht size... yeah right lol) the bucket snagged my rear wheel and just tore the whole rear end outta my van hahahaha scared me half to death. But when i realized he wasnt actually trying to kill me and just playing one hell of a joke, we laughed and he pushed me back to the shop lol
Yep, have done all of these. Noone has died or been hurt though taking my time. Have knocked someone in the head though. Wasnt moving and they turned around to encounter the bucket in their face from not paying attention.
I have to be honest, I never knew the front end loaders were out to get us this badly, what did we ever do to them? One advantage of it though is if you do kill someone like these guys have it’s quick and easy to dig a deep grave and pretend like it never happened…

Does anyone know what the deal is with the very small buckets on some of these loaders is, like the Cat being used as a lift? Or why the Cats are painted Terex green?
the green is just video quality, small buckets on big machines sometimes has to do with the type of load : Heavy load means smaller bucket
If the equipment is tasked with hauling heavy, high density stuff like stone, they will fit a smaller capacity bjucket to make sure operators aren't overloading it. The big buckets are just to make sure you can lift a large amount of low-density material.
