  • Worn out tracks on the dozer and no time to stop and replace the undercarriage, which needs to happen soon! So I decided on a temporary fix for now. Hope it helps some of ya'll keep the tracks turning a little longer!

I know it's an old video but behind the zerk there's another small plate with an o-ring underneath it. That oring seals a hole that goes directly to the grease chamber for the tensioner. It that ring blown, it will allow the grease to leak by. Tough part is, it's back behind the grease zerk so you never see it without knowing to look for it. Had the exact same problem you described and that's what it ended up being.

Yeah,.... just let a rock or piece of wood come between the sprocket and the track and you'll be wishing that you had replaced the seals in the adjuster, The recoil spring behind the front idler is in there for a reason, it protects the final drive by allowing some movement of the front idler in the event something solid comes between the track and the sprocket or rollers. Welding will work, but you lose the protection of the final drive that the recoil spring provides, and it's not worth risking thousands of dollars in damage to the final drive when repairing the adjuster is a relatively easy inexpensive repair......I wouldn't take the chance..

Yeah it was a quick fix and worked as intended. Since then all rollers, front idlers, and seals were replaced.

@@r3landservices133 Hello, I'm glad that worked out for you. I've been working on these things for over 30 years and could tell you some horror stories of things that went wrong. I just finished up a 963 loader that had been ran way too long with a bad undercarriage and worn equalizer bar. The pin holes were badly worn in the track frames and center pivot. All had to be line bored and sleeved. Both recoil springs had broken the retainer pins that held them in place which caused them to move forward in the frames and made a mess of everything. The constant jack hammering from worn out sprockets can really do some damage. I'm glad you got yours all replaced before it messed up your machine. Most folks will just run it untill it falls apart. Obviously you are much smarter than most...... Stay safe, keep that blade in the ground and the throttle back! , D.W.

And it wasn’t tensioner seals needing replaced?

The chains on that machine appear to have plenty of life left based on the position of the front idler on the track frame, they will adjust almost all the way to the end of the frame without losing any grease. More than likely his seals are just blown. I repair these all the time and have seen machines heavily damaged by welding a stop on the track frames. Seals are cheap, housings and gears are not. Better to repair the problem than put a bandaid on it.

Na the chain, idlers, and rollers were all wore pretty good. As far as the idler being able to go to the end of the track frame, that’s just not true. The only go so far then grease starts coming out of the bleeder hole. If they went all the way to the end there would barely be any shaft left in the cylinder.
